isn’t a neutral interjection. You’re dislike was pretty clear, and if you read Shanghai’s post again, I think you’ll find he doesn’t exactly throw a hissy fit or anything.
you threw a hissy fit… but I think you reacted as if HE did…
I didn’t think his post that you took exception too was bad at all… you’re reading into it emotion that may or may not be there… on the internet is best to give people the benefit of the doubt…
I went to a Packers game in Lambeau once. And I will never go back. The fans there were too uptight about the game. Combine that atmosphere with the Packers losing badly, and alcohol….
Fonty is the back-up third baseman, especially with Freel and Miles on the DL. Three infielders, all on the DL at the same time, it’s a valid question.
And if the offense could do anything, we would have won. But we didn’t. And no, if this team continues like this, they won’t. If they’re all healthy, pitching like this, and hitting more at expected average, then we’ll be ok.
Until then, it’s going to be painful
you don’t win 97 games in spite of your shortstop.
Yes, Riot would be better at second. However, while I recognize he has a limited range and a weak arm, he has been able to play shortstop well enough. Certainly, he’s not the problem.
However I do consider Sean Marshall the last Maddux protege on the Cubs.
Bad day for Maddux Cub proteges. Murton got demoted to AAA again but he is hitting well down there in his first game.
Wasn't the guy coming down the 3rd base line running inside the line?
he seemed to be on the same path as when theRiot was called out running out a dribbler down the first base line last year. he clearly had quite a bit of his body inside the foul line on Fonty’s throw. I am surprised the Cubs did not complain about that.
You can bet that drunk from St Louis would have complained about the runner if he lost that way.
Tough one to lose when you give up four unearned runs. Score one in either of the first two innings and you don’t have to worry about it.
I will say this: I think the Cubs are getting a lot of bad luck. I think I’ve seen more diving catches against this team this year than in the past five years combined. Dickerson is having an All-Star weekend with the glove.
Win tomorrow and win the series and all this is forgotten. Get ’er done.
while also watching the Cubs game, and they lit up Wellemeyer like a Roman candle. Carpenter is a stud, but I’m not at all sold on the others, particularly with Lohse now hurt.
because they are actually getting decent starting pitching and excellent relief pitching. I still expect the starters and bullpen to slip but I’d like to see us quit giving away games too!
is that Dave Bush has been outstanding and Trevor Hoffman is pitching like the Hoffman of old, not like an old Hoffman. He’s helped put their bullpen into place.
who are too stupid to get on the internets and join BCB. I’m serious. These are the people who want to put Soriano at second, Hoff in Left and Fox at third, full time.
Who gets the bigger and longer standing O, Wood or DeRosa? And what are the odds of a “Hendry Sucks” chant starting during DeRosa’s at-bat?
Although Reed Johnson did get a standing O last year in Toronto for his first AB. I predict that will be nothing compared to what we’ll see when DeRosa enters the batter’s box at Wrigley.
When he was on his game, he was among the better pitchers in baseball. The first sign we got of how good he could be came in a certain start against Houston in 1998.
is supposed to be that guy. So was Miles. There’s some guys out there, but I don’t know what we give in return without going for someone who is a dreg. Freddie Sanchez might be available, but what do you give the Pirates? They’re going to want good prospects, and we need the ones we have.
We need to keep our prospects, so if we do trade, who will end up going? I can’t really think of anyone, though I don’t keep up with our farm system as much as I should.
Let's get this into extras
and win it!

Didn't Brenly call out Soriano last year too?

Yes.

Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
You got a mite aggressive
Perhaps I responded aggressively too, but the cycle comment was pretty inappropriate.
Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009
it wasn't aggressive at all
it was just an observation. You snapped and I tried to make light. Next thing, I’m some ‘internet tough guy’. It’s a joke.
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
"sheesh"

nothing
said by Pat & Ron.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009

I wish GA Hill was still on the team to deliver it to him.
ballhawk - June 6, 2009
what message
is that?
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Something tells me if Soriano had played better defense tonight (i.e. better positioning, more hustle)
Lou wouldn’t have done the double switch.
ballhawk - June 6, 2009
well
I missed much of the game, so I don’t know. But it seems the double switch theory is pretty good.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
sure, but with one of your best players?
and your top home run hitter?
I don’t imagine Pujols, Beltran, Chipper, et al get double switched that often, if at all.
ballhawk - June 6, 2009
I suppose
but Hoff has the chops to hit, it is his job.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009

It's faster than gameday, too
Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009
thanks...
Sometimes I’ll look through old game threads and it comes in handy to get the context of the comments too… just wondered if there was another reason.
lohroffc - June 6, 2009
Y'know, Santo needs to chill the heck out....
I appreciate his passion , but golly, he calls a game like every hit/walk/pitch is the armageddon on the doorstep! Have some faith, my man!

Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009

drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009

or is he still our 5th starter?
brian custer - June 6, 2009
going to the pen
when Harden comes back, which is, theoretically, in a week or so.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
i guess he's still the 5th
until harden comes back, but with off days we don’t need 5 right now
lohroffc - June 6, 2009
I think Len
just said he has been moved to the pen.
sue369 - June 6, 2009
these are the times when having patton is just stupid
if you don’t use him then why even have him in the pen? Making him sit in your pen is not going to improve your team whatsoever.

Ryanocm1 - June 6, 2009
Quiet for an hour, then back when
The other team has the winning run on 2nd with none out?
Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009
Isn't that their MO?
sue369 - June 6, 2009
Our catchers are not doing so well lately.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
Bunt
Marshall makes the throw to first. No one was covering third, so there was no play there. Bruce to third. One out.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
cue AUGH pic
Cubbie-Tim - June 6, 2009
My Kingdom for a third baseman...
ballhawk - June 6, 2009
how do you not cover third there???
chitownhawkeye - June 6, 2009
When you put your second baseman there, that's when.
Goodie1969 - June 6, 2009
Or how, rather.
Goodie1969 - June 6, 2009
Fontenot sucks at 3rd base...
Jimmyeatworld - June 6, 2009
That's not Fontenot
He needs to charge in for the bunt. It’s the SS to cover third if anyone does — and the coaching staff makes the decision.
Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009
Bob says you are incorrect
and that it is on Mike
Cubbie-Tim - June 6, 2009
No, in that situation Fontenot covers the bag.
Jimmyeatworld - June 6, 2009
fwiw
that’s not what we do when we drill bunts. First and third charge the ball, second covers first, short covers third.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Wait, he was at third?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
Brenely's blaming him, but
I don’t think he could get back there that quickly
Shanghai Badger - June 6, 2009
Agreed
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
If it is bunted toward third, he comes in, if not he covers the bag. Simple.
Fontenot blew it.

that's a tough play

font at 3rd not a good idea
lexmarklover - June 6, 2009
But who can play there?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
that's what I'm thinking
yet, if the defense is gonna stink anyway may as well put Fox over there
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
there are levels
of stinking though.. lol
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - June 6, 2009
Fonty
is a capable, if uninspired third baseman. Fox is… not.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
This seems like an absurd question
to be asking of a major league baseball team.
mic - June 6, 2009
it's a major league baseball team
that’s suffering injuries.
Fonty is the back-up third baseman, especially with Freel and Miles on the DL. Three infielders, all on the DL at the same time, it’s a valid question.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
there isn't a better one
at the moment.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
that one is on him
damn it what a lousy throw
chitownhawkeye - June 6, 2009
We need a real 3B
Fonty is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
salparadise23 - June 6, 2009
Mike Fontenot
cost the cubs all 4 runs
Another terrible loss for the Cubs. So many this season
Ryanocm1 - June 6, 2009
shut up
It wasn’t a “terrible loss”
Quit over reacting!!
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
Yep life is over.
sue369 - June 6, 2009
That final play was not a "gimme..."
… of course you want him to make that play but it was not an easy, sure play.
Go get them tomorrow.
DrCrawdad - June 6, 2009
It was ruled a throwing error...
… kind of surprised by that.
DrCrawdad - June 6, 2009
Actually a tough play
he was behind the runner, had to be a perfect throw.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
Certainly not a gimme play
but should have been made. No excuses for Fontenot’s defensive performance today.
Ryanocm1 - June 6, 2009
This inning was difficult, first inning was really bad.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
We threw 9 straight scoreless tonight
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
Bullpen

All runs were unearned. Pretty ugly.
Doggie Stalker - June 6, 2009
uh huh
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - June 6, 2009
Thank goodness MLB Gameday stopped working.
I missed the end of this game, and we lost. :(
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
i don't want to say it but i'm gonna say it
font is a very big reason the cubs lost today.
lexmarklover - June 6, 2009
true
but maybe he’ll be the reason they win tomorrow.
it’s another day….
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
true
lexmarklover - June 6, 2009
If he plays the throw correct in the first inning,
The Cubs win, 3-2.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
italic or bold?
ballhawk - June 6, 2009
That first inning error cost dearly
much more than his latest bungle.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
Terrible defense this year
Soto should have blocked that pitch.
Fonty offers nothing at 3B. Rather have Scales there.
salparadise23 - June 6, 2009
Prepare for fanposts
not that anything new will be said
chitownhawkeye - June 6, 2009
Well?
The Cubs suck defensively. They have all year. Come on, it’s June already.
Can you see a team like this in the postseason?
salparadise23 - June 6, 2009
I'm not arguing that point
And if the offense could do anything, we would have won. But we didn’t. And no, if this team continues like this, they won’t. If they’re all healthy, pitching like this, and hitting more at expected average, then we’ll be ok.
Until then, it’s going to be painful
chitownhawkeye - June 6, 2009
I actually avoid the fanposts.
Too much negativity.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
i hate this disturbing trend
of jumping around on the field after a victory
VegasCubFan - June 6, 2009
Especially the other team!
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
How's that leg? lol
CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - June 6, 2009
Numb, like the rest of my body.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
After a lameass grounder?
Itchy - June 6, 2009
When any baseball team does it
unless it is the last game of the World Series, I think it is stupid
VegasCubFan - June 6, 2009
I can see it after a dramtic HR but that's it.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
it's an extra inning win in June!
against the 4th place team in the division
cmon, let them enjoy their fun. They earned it.
Did you see LBR jumping around? I kid…….I kid……..
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
If he would've jumped then maybe he could've seen over the runners shoulder.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
Nice.
ha!
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
If they continue to leave men in scoring position and playing these crappy utility guys in 3 out of 4 infield postions,
they’re never getting much over .500 and will continue to waste good pitching.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
Here comes my Debbie Downer moment.....
but that was the same complaint 40 games ago….
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
well, not 3 out of 4 infield positions, but 2 out of 4 ain't bad.
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
Scales and font...
who’s the third??
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
Of the utility guys, not crappy utility guys
Without scales homer we wouldn’t have went to extras
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
And without Fonty's 1st inning boot, we win 2-0 in 9 innings!!!
Scales is ok for a bench guy but thats it.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
Riot
He’s out of position and has no range.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
He's not a utility guy...
And has been good this year…
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
on a good team he plays 2nd or utility.
He’s not a everyday SS, period.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
He has been good this year though...
I like how you say “period” like you just stamped something into factual existence
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
and last year or the year before we didn't have a good team?
thats idiotic!
preachermancubsfan - June 6, 2009
In spite of our weak SS play!
He would be much better at 2nd base.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
um
you don’t win 97 games in spite of your shortstop.
Yes, Riot would be better at second. However, while I recognize he has a limited range and a weak arm, he has been able to play shortstop well enough. Certainly, he’s not the problem.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
so what should they do, then?
Three infielders on the DL. Do you really think Fox would have been even as good as Fontenot?
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Well, Its been long and not the desired result, but tomorrow is another day.
KaliCub - June 6, 2009
Absolutely.
We’ll get them tomorrow and win this series!
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
This is what we get for letting Augie Ojeda go.
Doggie Stalker - June 6, 2009
Augie rhymes with doggie

LAcarl519 - June 6, 2009
That's a stretch even for me
However I do consider Sean Marshall the last Maddux protege on the Cubs.
Bad day for Maddux Cub proteges. Murton got demoted to AAA again but he is hitting well down there in his first game.
Doggie Stalker - June 6, 2009
Well I'm gonna go enjoy the rest of my Sunday
Go get ‘em tomorrow… I think it’s safe to say I won’t be in the game threads tomorrow with the game starting at 3am my time…

CubFanInCanberra (9387milesfromWrigley) - June 6, 2009
Wasn't the guy coming down the 3rd base line running inside the line?
he seemed to be on the same path as when theRiot was called out running out a dribbler down the first base line last year. he clearly had quite a bit of his body inside the foul line on Fonty’s throw. I am surprised the Cubs did not complain about that.
You can bet that drunk from St Louis would have complained about the runner if he lost that way.
LAcarl519 - June 6, 2009
no earned runs today?
doofus cubs guy - June 6, 2009
now I feel better
LAcarl519 - June 6, 2009

KaliCub - June 6, 2009

Go Cubs!!
LAcarl519 - June 6, 2009
Pretty ugly
Tough one to lose when you give up four unearned runs. Score one in either of the first two innings and you don’t have to worry about it.
I will say this: I think the Cubs are getting a lot of bad luck. I think I’ve seen more diving catches against this team this year than in the past five years combined. Dickerson is having an All-Star weekend with the glove.
Win tomorrow and win the series and all this is forgotten. Get ’er done.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Absolutely.
And I agree with you about the luck. At this point, even bad luck would be better than the luck the Cubs have gotten.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I agree about the luck
but you can’t run yourself out of two innings and have to rely on the long ball with this team.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
I agree with
both your statements.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
I completely agree.
The Cubs need to start manufacturing runs, and not just rely on the home run ball.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
how many home runs
have been hit lately? Scales today is one. Other than that? Yesterday’s runs were “manufactured”.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Soto hit a HR today too IIRC.
zevkalman - June 6, 2009
Z hit one yesterday, too
The Cubs probably should have lost yesterday, probably should have won today. All in all, they’re shooting about par.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
dammit
sorry. My mistake. This is what I get for not watching all of every game. o.0
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
It's okay.
I might miss the game tomorrow, depends on whether or not it rains here.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
That being considered,
How do you see them ending the year, what kind of record do you think they will end up with?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I think
that a lot depends on two things:
1) Can Bradley actually get going.
2) What condition does Rami come back in.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Agreed
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
I agree, too.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I agree as long as we're not 10 games out when both hit their stride.
Itchy - June 6, 2009
I don't think that's going to happen
The Cardinals are thudding right now, and I don’t think the Brewers’ pitching can sustain.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
You're right about the Cardinals
The Rockies, not a particularly good team, have gone into St. Louis and are running roughshod over them.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I watched that game tonight
while also watching the Cubs game, and they lit up Wellemeyer like a Roman candle. Carpenter is a stud, but I’m not at all sold on the others, particularly with Lohse now hurt.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
The Brewers are starting to scare me
because they are actually getting decent starting pitching and excellent relief pitching. I still expect the starters and bullpen to slip but I’d like to see us quit giving away games too!
Itchy - June 6, 2009
The biggest thing for the Brewers
is that Dave Bush has been outstanding and Trevor Hoffman is pitching like the Hoffman of old, not like an old Hoffman. He’s helped put their bullpen into place.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Scoring change
Last play was a fielder’s choice. No throwing error. So it’s an earned run, per Marty Brennaman on the WLW postgame show.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
there's a shocker
Although, there is no assumption of making that play so fc is fine. It’s a Reds homegame after all.
Gibbon Jockey - June 6, 2009
Well the official box score still shows unearned
but I am sure it could change.
Doggie Stalker - June 6, 2009
The Cubs need to win some games now!
Aaron Miles will be off the DL soon. :-p
Goodie1969 - June 6, 2009
Soriano is batting .243. That's kinda...kinda...mediocre....
Isn’t he about due for a hot streak? Maybe not.
zevkalman - June 6, 2009
he's been due
for a while, imo.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
I think so too,
He’s going to snap out of this cold streak soon.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I hearby apologize to a lot of you ledge-jumpers
I’m listening to the WGN postgame show, and I haven’t heard a caller who make sense yet. OMG, are they stupid.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
oh, those are the people
who are too stupid to get on the internets and join BCB. I’m serious. These are the people who want to put Soriano at second, Hoff in Left and Fox at third, full time.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Yeah, like that lineup is going to work.
Are there any players who we can trade for? Specifically, an infielder who can play all the positions in the IF until Ramirez comes back?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
No kidding! Those nuts that call in act like Hoff, Scales, & Fox are superstars!
Plus they also want Koyie Hill in there every day and Murton back!!
Itchy - June 6, 2009
And the DeRo obsession here
is nothing compared to the Church of DeRo they’re building on Radio 720.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
For sure!
Itchy - June 6, 2009
That series against the Indians
is going to be darned near unbearable.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Yeah.
Who all are going to be returning to Wrigley? DeRosa, Wood, anyone else we traded to Cleveland?
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
Just those two
but that’s enough.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
I personally think Wood will get the longer standing O
Because of how long he was a Cub. Nothing against DeRosa, but some of Wood’s accomplishments here merit it.
Though, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a “Hendry sucks” chant in DeRo’s at-bats.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I hope so
Wood deserves it.
DeRosa deserves a hand, too, but this out-of-whack love for him might skew that somewhat.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Wood definitely deserves it.
When he was on his game, he was among the better pitchers in baseball. The first sign we got of how good he could be came in a certain start against Houston in 1998.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
Possibly
the most dominating pitching performance in baseball history. Seriously.
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Matt Murton?
Seriously? I can understand wanting DeRosa back, but not him. He tended to tighten up in pressure situations.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
I wouldn't mind seeing...
a Fox start.
Kansas25 - June 6, 2009
Freel
is supposed to be that guy. So was Miles. There’s some guys out there, but I don’t know what we give in return without going for someone who is a dreg. Freddie Sanchez might be available, but what do you give the Pirates? They’re going to want good prospects, and we need the ones we have.
drewishdrewid - June 6, 2009
Do you really think
the Pirates are going to trade Sanchez?
Trading McLouth makes a little sense, because they’re pretty high on McCutchen. Is there anybody in their system who can replace Sanchez?
Not Bruce Froemming - June 6, 2009
Who exactly can we give them?
We need to keep our prospects, so if we do trade, who will end up going? I can’t really think of anyone, though I don’t keep up with our farm system as much as I should.
Vermont Cubs Fan - June 6, 2009
Did I miss the game?
dtpollitt - June 7, 2009
That's a question
only you can answer, isn’t it?
