It's been a busy day for me here with the draft and all, but the minor leagues go on.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs stopped the Round Rock Express, 5-3.
Jeff Samardzija was strong for six innings, allowing only two runs, one of which was unearned. The Shark allowed five hits and didn't walk anyone. He had three strikeouts.
Blake Parker had his seventh save of the year for Iowa. (He had three for the Smokies) Parker pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.
Nate Spears had two doubles in a 2 for 3 afternoon. Spears crossed home once and had two RBI. He also stole a base.
Second baseman Luis Rivas was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Tennessee Smokies
Make that five in a row for the Smokies as they shut down the Chattanooga Lookouts 3-1.
Casey Lambert had an impressive start tonight to even his record on the season to 4-4. Lambert threw 6.2 innings and allowed only one run on a solo home run. He gave up six hits total but most impressively, struck out eight and walked nobody.
John Gaub notched his third save by also throwing a perfect ninth inning and striking out two.
Third baseman Marquez Smith went 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base tonight. Smith had one RBI. Left fielder Ty Wright was also 3 for 4
Shortstop Darwin Barney was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Daytona Cubs were nailed by the Jupiter Hammerheads, 10-2.
Dan McDaniel had his third straight poor start tonight. McDaniel allowed six runs on eleven hits in five innings. McDaniel walked one and fanned four. One of the six runs allowed was unearned.
Catcher Robinson Chirinos hit a solo home run in a 1 for 4 night. Chirinos now has nine homers on the year.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs lost to the Kane County Cougars, 5-4 in the tenth inning.
Alberto Cabrera didn't allow a run in his three inning start. He gave up three hits and walked two. He did not have a strikeout.
Chris Huseby gave up a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the tenth. Before that he was really good, pitching two innings of relief and giving up one hit other than the home run. He struck out five Cougars and walked nobody.
DH Nelson Perez was 2 for 4 with a double and his seventh home run on the year. Perez had two RBI.
Right fielder Drew Rundle went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. He also walked once and scored twice.

Long day, Josh...
Thanks for the great coverage! Really appreciate that I can come to BCB for great stuff at the end of a long day of work. Now GET SOME REST!

Thank you
I’ve been working hard all day long.

It's good to see Gaub get the save.
Every guy we got in the DeRosa trade is looking promising.
Jon Gaub is a 24 year old lefty in AA with very impressive strikeout numbers. His ERA is a solid 3.32. But what stands out is the 13.29 SO/9 ratio. Leftys with that strikeout capabilities don’t come around that often. Hopefully this guy can pan out to be a Matt Thorton type of player.
Jeff Stevens is the closest to the bigs as he is a 25 year old who is pitching well with Iowa Cubs posting a 1.67 ERA. He allowed 14 Hits in 27 IP. He may be able to help us out down the strech.
Chris Archer is the youngest pitcher. He is a 20 year old lengthy righty who is pitching well in LowA. He is posting a 1.76 ERA and 11.63 SO/9. He has only allowed 25 Hits in 41 IP.
As I said, they all look to be pitching well. Hopefully in a few years, the DeRosa trade will look like a steal.

you're going soft on the
“i hate everything to do with the dero trade” movement. we’ll have none of that.
of course, you’re correct, but that’s beside the point.

Thanks for the hard work Josh!
Looked at the Peoria box score. Saw Vitters had a sac fly in an 0-4 night. No Ks.
We faced Jeremy Barfield, Jessie’s younger son… he’s a big, big kid (6’5" 240), and plays OF like his dad. His brother Josh just got recalled again from AAA by the Indians. Though, he plays 2B and is 6’0" 190.

Shark had a triple and an RBI

Hey Josh,
I have a Draft question for ya, if you happen to poke your head back in here today. I’m just trying to figure out how something works. How come last year’s Yankees pick, Gerrit Cole, who opted not to sign with them, instead going to UCLA, is not eligible for the draft again until 2011? Is it once you opt to go to college instead of signing with a Pro team, you are obligated to stay in college for three years or something? If so, why is that? Is that a way to protect the college programs?
DamonBerryhillsMitt - June 10, 2009
Yes
If you go to a four-year college, you can’t be drafted again until after your junior season. Now if you go to a junior college, you can be drafted again the next season. But one you set foot on a four-year, you’re ineligible until after your junior season. Unless you had an injury red-shirt season which goofs up your college class, but it’s three years after entering school.
I would assume this is done to protect the colleges and maybe to give the kids some breathing space at school. College recruiting in baseball is a nightmare—you commit to guys and offer them full or half rides and then two weeks before school starts, the kid tells you that the Mariners just coughed up that extra $100K and he’s not attending. It’s too late to recruit anyone else at that point. I can only guess how bad it would be if the guys already in your program were doing that.
If you don’t want to sign out of high school but don’t want to wait three seasons, the solution is to go to a junior college. A lot of players do that too.

Alrighty, kinda
what I was figuring. Thanks for clarifying that for me, man. Much appreciated!

i think a quirk in that
was exploited by alex fernandez of the chisox back when. he went to “the u” (miami) and had a great season as a freshman. he transferred to a juco the next year (good luck beating him then at a juco) and was eligible the next season. but yeah, josh nailed it.
tim815 - June 10, 2009
I think
that loophole has been closed since then, since I haven’t heard of anyone using it since then.
I don’t know, but I think that’s a good guess.
