Odd coincidence or serendipity?: Mark DeRosa won't be playing this weekend as he's on the DL, while one of the three pitchers acquired from Cleveland in the DeRosa trade last December will make his major league debut sometime over the weekend (presumably) after being recalled this morning to replace Kevin Hart on the roster. Hart is headed to Iowa to get some work before he himself is recalled after the All-Star break to make another start or two before Ryan Dempster returns from the DL himself.
Got all that straight? Good, because the Cubs have some ground to make up this weekend. Starting the weekend 3.5 games behind the first-place Cardinals, it would take a sweep to overtake them. That's unlikely, but winning three of four would put the Cubs 1.5 games behind going into the break, over .500 at 44-42, and in pretty good shape for the second half.
In the meantime, Bruce Miles tells us that the Cubs may indeed have interest in B.J. Ryan:
The 33-year-old Ryan will have to clear waivers, and once that happens, the Cubs likely will explore the possibility of signing him.
Insiders say any team that ends up with the former closer probably will want him to start out at Triple-A. The Blue Jays are on the hook for the approximately $15 million Ryan is owed through next season. The Cubs, or any team that picks up Ryan, will have to pay him only a prorated share of the major-league minimum salary this year and the minimum for 2010.
The idea of sending him to Iowa first ought to calm the fears of those who think he'd just blow games left and right for the Cubs. Try him out in Triple-A first. Sounds good to me. Get it done, Jim. Meanwhile, Jeff Stevens will be recalled today to fill the roster slot vacated by Hart.

Brad Thompson shuttles back and forth between starting and relieving, though he has never started against the Cubs. He has had a couple of decent starts this year and several mediocre ones. The only current Cub to have more than a handful of AB vs. Thompson with any success is Derrek Lee (3-for-6, 2 HR). Aramis Ramirez is 0-for-6 against Thompson; maybe this would be a good day for him to sit.
Rich Harden is 2-1, 3.44 in three career starts vs. St. Louis. On April 26 in St. Louis, he struck out nine in six innings and the Cubs won 10-3. He's even handled Albert Pujols well -- 1-for-6 (a double).
Today's game is nationally available on WGN and on EI and in the St. Louis area via FSN Midwest. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

We need Rich Harden to turn back the clock
to this day
SackMan - July 10, 2009
Carpenter is starting today, not Thompson.
And I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Pujols will hit at least one HR today.
kanderber - July 10, 2009
they should never throw him a competitive pitch.
intentional walk every time. let ludwick beat them. and i expect ludwick to hit 2 homeruns today, but i’d stil rather have that than give pujols a chance.

cubswynn - July 10, 2009

Michael Jordan

gwood - July 10, 2009
Awesome, I love this idea.
dtpollitt - July 10, 2009
did you see Michael Jordan hit?
I’m not so sure he CAN hit better than Bradley.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Can he be any worse?
At least Jordan wouldn’t get booed at Wrigley (I would hope, although he did play for the Sox, so maybe). Jordan would also be a better clubhouse influence.
gwood - July 10, 2009
let him strike out
six or seven times. He’ll get booed.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Yeah but he wouldn't get suspended, have faux injuries, get booed, forget how many outs there are...

I think it was a favor, but had he been able to produce, I’m sure they would have used him.

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Mostly a favor but
I remember one of the coaches saying something to the effect that he would have considered Jordan a decent prospect had he been 18 instead of 30 at the time.

gwood - July 10, 2009
Why would RJ lead off against a RHP?
daver - July 10, 2009
Well I'm all in favor of picking up B.J. Ryan.
There’s not much to lose by signing him, and the Cubs have had pretty good luck with Blue Jays rejects recently (Reed Johnson and Randy Wells).

JFCubFan - July 10, 2009
Weather report anyone?
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
Heaviest rains
are past the Northside of Chicago. Possibility of a short delay, but nothing major at this time
jthack - July 10, 2009
anything coming later.
the best thing for the cubs would be to start on time, then have a lengthy delay in the 2nd or 3rd so that Carpenter couldn’t come back out and would be wasted. Then we could throw marshall.
buckmulligan - July 10, 2009
Barely raining downtown.
cubswynn - July 10, 2009
Yeah, it's down to a drizzle now
chilango2 - July 10, 2009

santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2009
It appears to be raining heaviest to the south of Wrigley.
Vermont Cubs Fan - July 10, 2009
Good. I want a game today!
I think the Cubs are going to take 3 of 4, and look back at this series as the defining moment in the season…

Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
We've had what were supposedley "season defining moments" abot 4 times so far this year...
and none of them have quite defined the suckyness of this season so far.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2009
Nothing worth having ever comes easy, my Californian friend!
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
If that turns out to be true..........
That will be my signture line for a VERY long time. B/c 3 outta 4 from Brew Crew obviosly didn’t do it.
Madison Cub Fan - July 10, 2009
The 3 of 4 from the Brewers was the prelude, to show our boys they can do it...
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
I know everybody sees that Theriot is trying to hit HRs but look at his numbers
last year- 73 BB, 58 K
this year- 23 BB, 51 K
That’s pretty drastic.
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
NO don't look at his numbers! Look at how HARD he plays the game! He hustles! He dives! He brings ENERGY!
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2009
he's
SCRAPPY!! (funny how an essential part of scrappy is crap)
gwood - July 10, 2009
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
It sucks
I knew he wasn’t getting on base as much but I never knew it was that bad! This whole damn team has collapsed under the pressure of high expectations!
Itchy - July 10, 2009
Maybe someone should tell them most of use don't expect them to make the playoffs this year...
that should take the pressure off and get them back to their winning ways.
Then we could let them know that once they’re in the playoffs, we pretty much expect them to dissolve into nothing and get trounced out in the first round. That will relieve any pressure they might feel then too.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2009
They'd still choke and blame it on the lack of fan support just like last year!
Itchy - July 10, 2009
he's on pace for 100 Ks ..... for that type of hitter?
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
I don't understand
how is this Soriano’s fault?
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
soriano?
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
everything is Soriano's fault.
obviously this must be too.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
he's trying to make up for soriano's disappearance.
buckmulligan - July 10, 2009
ah-hah!
there it is!
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
i never said anything about soriano......
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
But youre forgetting:
Its Aaron Miles’ fault that its Soriano’s fault, so in a sense, everything is really Miles’ fault.
Orval Overall - July 10, 2009
did you seem my
cost benefit analysis for Miles? We’re paying him $1million per RBI!
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
If that's his rate, I hope he doesn't get many RBI opportunities the rest of the way
Orval Overall - July 10, 2009
Orval, dontcha know? Everything is Dusty's fault...
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
Well, truthfully
if Don Baylor hadn’t failed so miserably we never would’ve hired Dusty, so….
Orval Overall - July 10, 2009
So Drew at this point of the season
You believe that all the players will come around and back from injury and that in the 2nd half have a second half like last year?
(this isn’t a cut, just a question)
Madison Cub Fan - July 10, 2009
I hope that happens. I believe that they’re CAPABLE of doing it.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
They are capable, and I believe they will do it...
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009
I'm
with you Jimmy, I believe they can and will do it.
gwood - July 10, 2009

Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2009

Orval Overall - July 10, 2009

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Stop clogging up the bases
Ace Venom - July 10, 2009
You know...
For someone who wants to be on the side of “the numbers”, it would help to be a little more transparent about what numbers you are looking at. To clarify, your “drastic” numbers are:
last year (FULL SEASON) – 73BB, 58K
this year (FIRST HALF) – 23 BB, 51K.
I grant you, that doesn’t make it universally better, since his pace on the strikeouts is pretty horrid. I just don’t think you should hold out two completely different numbers without noting what they are.
Orval Overall - July 10, 2009
hey you're right
my b
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
fwiw
I think I understood the difference.
it still means he’s on pace for 3/5 the walks and double the Ks.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
I'm with you, but worth noting (in my mind) because
It just isn’t as “drastic” as the numbers first suggested, for two reasons – (1) even on this pace, the walks are going to be a lot closer than the comparison initially suggested; and (2) lots of guys have very different numbers in one half over the other; Riot, for example, had 60+% of his K’s in the first half last year, but hit .320; the K’s fell in the second half, but so did his average and his walk total.
Orval Overall - July 10, 2009
fair enough
and we’re all hoping that Sori and Bradley etc have big changes to their second half numbers.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Ok...so double the first half numbers.
last year (FULL SEASON) – 73BB, 58K
this year (PROJECTED) – 46 BB, 102K.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2009
I'm going to games 2-4

That brings my jersey total to: Soto (grey away), Sosa (home pinstripes), Maddux (blue batting practice).
dtpollitt - July 10, 2009
Nice collection!
I’ve only got one, Prior (home pinstripes)
Vermont Cubs Fan - July 10, 2009

Ace Venom - July 10, 2009

I want a Lilly
away jersey.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2009
Lilly cannot have a road jersey
Anywhere he is physcally present is home.
jerry morales rules - July 10, 2009
so does it look like this game is gonna start on time?
lexmarklover - July 10, 2009
I hope the Cubs can score a lot of runs today,
And take some of the pressure off Lilly.
To me, it seems that when the Cubs score more runs, the pitchers don’t work nearly as hard, because the margin for error is there. It also seems that when the Cubs score fewer runs, the pitchers have to work harder because they have little, if any, margin for error and any pitching mistakes are magnified.
This does not mean this team is like 2006, when, if the bats didn’t produce, the pitchers were terrible. I just think that the pitchers have to work harder when the Cubs aren’t scoring, because if the bats aren’t there, it’s the pitcher’s job to keep the Cubs in the game.
So I hope to see a blowout of St. Louis today.
Vermont Cubs Fan - July 10, 2009
Oops, sorry, meant Rich Harden.
Got confused by dtpollitt’s Lilly jersey above.
Vermont Cubs Fan - July 10, 2009
Lilly doesn't feel pressure
he applies it.

anyone know if the game will start on time?
buckmulligan - July 10, 2009
No
And it just started pouring again downtown.
chilango2 - July 10, 2009
Not a chance of it starting on time
It is raining right now and will be for a bit longer. However, it does seem that the next group of clouds will go south of Chicago. I’m no meteorologist tho.
