After a horrible swing by Sori on strike one or two, Lou calls time and comes out of the dugout and stands behind Sori and, like our dads did with us when we were little, guides him through a nice, level swing. Right there in front of a national TV audience.
because he incorrectly saw Sori as being that type of player. Too much money for a guy who’s a heckuva nice accessory in the lineup but most definitely NOT an elite superstar.
My god, our offense is atrocious.I’ll tell you, living in DC, as bad as the Nats are, next week is going to be interesting. The Nats lineup is eons better than ours right now with Morgan, Guzman, Willingham, Zimmerman, Johnson all hitting above .280, and then there is Dunn.
On the Gameday feed after the ad break started, Pat moaned and said “Aw, Theriot is … average.”. Sounded like he caught himself before saying what he fully thought.
if Marshall hurts himself out there, I will be done with this season
I will say things to get me banned, have a great time doing it, and not watch a single game the rest of the season. I will serious consider naming my child Ludwick.
Hey, why not have the bullpen guys practice outfield
So they can do righty-lefty switches throughout the late inning without wasting pitchers? Instead of bringing in RJ they could have Heilman play LF while the lefties bat. Etc.
in a game vs the Giants. Kent Tekulve went to LF after getting the 2nd out (a RH hitter), in case the next hitter (LH) got a hit – the on deck hitter was a RH and Tekulve could return to the mound to face him. So the LH hitter of course hits a fly to left and Tekulve snares it to end the game.
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with points of view
Facts don’t do what I want them to
Facts just twist the truth around
Facts are living turned inside out
Facts are getting the best of them
Facts are nothing on the face of things
When I played we swung a balls with two strikes, but it is a different game today, the strike zone expands with 2 strikes, guys today just won’t swing at balls off the plate, they want it over the plate. It’s just a different game.
Thanks Joe, without your insightful analysis we would all be lost.
If you don’t want to umpire baseball games for the entirety, and your way of getting out of it to go home early is calling clear balls strikes, find another job.
He’s not missing these calls – he knows damn well what he’s doing.
the strike zone expands when you have 2 strikes. He wouldn’t even acknowledge that those were bad strike calls. And on that 3rd ball off the plate that wasn’t called a strike was barely any farther off the plate, but he made it sound like it was thrown into the stands.
Milton doesn’t magically start hitting. Geo doesn’t magically lose weight. Derrek’s neck doesn’t magically feel great. Soriano doesn’t magically start hitting like we owe him $90M over the next 5 years.
Satisfied with a split. An organization and many fans alike satisfied with mediocracy. I really think those clowns in the booth have an orgasm when the Cubs lose.
Hold Pujols to 0-4, and you have to like your chances.
But not with this offense.
They had a real chance to make a statement and get within 1.5 games, but they blew it.
Just like pretty much all of the first half.
Blew it? Really? One guy goes out there and kills us on a random Sunday. We played a pretty good series in our division. We have the Nationals on Thursday, and we have 78 games left. We are 3.5 out, not 7.5. That is blowing it. Take your cry baby shit somewhere else.
Breathe, breathe in the air
Dont be afraid to care
Leave but dont leave me
Look around and chose your own ground
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles youll give and tears youll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell.
As awful as the Cubs have looked at times, the fact that we are 3.5 games back at the all star break means it’s not over. If the team FINALLY wakes up and does half of what they did last year, the playoffs are in reach.
i think the cardinals will have a strong second half. their bullpen is solid, starting rotation is solid. they should get either derosa or glaus back, perhaps both, and ludwick looks poised to go on a tear.
the cubs are going to have to have a dominant second half (like 15 games above .500) to win this division in my opinion.
then again, pujols could pull a hamstring or something and they’d look pretty listless. i think soriano is going to come around and hit about .280 or so with 10 homeruns in the second half—nothing amazing, but respectable. his approach has improved somewhat.
i kind of wish ramirez would just pack it up for the year. he looks very fragile.
“what’s up with it vanilla face, me and my homie azamah just parked our slab outside, we’re looking for somewhere to post up our black asses for the night, so ah bang bang skeet skeet n***a, we just a couple of pimps no h**s.
About the 30th time the Cubs need to tip their cap. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as a fan, I’m tired of tipping my cap. In the words of Piniella “Roll up your damn shirts, go out there and kick somebody’s ass.” SWL where’s that picture?
I’ve the cap tipping comment way to many times this year. They had their chances but couldn’t deliver. The 9th inning was the biggest joke of an effort I have ever seen.

The 79 Pirates did this too
in a game vs the Giants.

In Joe Morgan's world
the strike zone expands when you have 2 strikes. He wouldn’t even acknowledge that those were bad strike calls. And on that 3rd ball off the plate that wasn’t called a strike was barely any farther off the plate, but he made it sound like it was thrown into the stands.

As awful as the Cubs have looked at times, the fact that we are 3.5 games back at the all star break means it’s not over. If the team FINALLY wakes up and does half of what they did last year, the playoffs are in reach.

excuse me, I seem to recall that there were TWO games played today
and the Cubs looked pretty darn good in the first against the leaders of the NL Central.
two mistakes by the pitcher and we lost
And your point is, exactly?
cubnational - July 12, 2009
That's the ONLY reason we lost, that's right
If it was just two mistakes by the pitcher, fine, but the offense was completely pathetic again.
Worf - July 12, 2009
wainwright has a nasty curveball and he throws it all day long.
that had a lot to do with it.
buckmulligan - July 12, 2009
main problem was the way we pitched ludwick.
could have easily pitched around him and gone after ankiel. that was a big mistake.
buckmulligan - July 12, 2009
well, they're gonna have to play well.
i think the cardinals will have a strong second half. their bullpen is solid, starting rotation is solid. they should get either derosa or glaus back, perhaps both, and ludwick looks poised to go on a tear.
the cubs are going to have to have a dominant second half (like 15 games above .500) to win this division in my opinion.
buckmulligan - July 12, 2009
and I honestly don't think they have the horses for that
They had a very good chance to take 3 of 4, and blew it.
WanderingWanderer - July 12, 2009
They will never catch St Louis
Aramis isn’t healthy, Soto is gone, Soriano is worthless, and Bradley is middlin at best. We can’t score enough runs to ever be consistently good.
Itchy - July 12, 2009
disagreed ..
i think we’re going to hang in there .. and this division is still wayyyy up for grabs
and may Soriano be glued to the bench for a while
Let Reed start the next month!
cubnational - July 12, 2009
Soriano benching will never happen. Reed is just a backup.
Itchy - July 12, 2009
yeah, i'm not optimistic.
then again, pujols could pull a hamstring or something and they’d look pretty listless. i think soriano is going to come around and hit about .280 or so with 10 homeruns in the second half—nothing amazing, but respectable. his approach has improved somewhat.
i kind of wish ramirez would just pack it up for the year. he looks very fragile.

Vermont Cubs Fan - July 12, 2009
Wow
The Philly road trip kinda scares me a bit, considering our hitting isnt doing much.
But, hopefully we start off on a good track with a sweep at DC. :D

It was a fun first game posting on BCB
Would have loved a win, but the sun will rise tomorrow. Talk to you all after Ted Lilly wins the Cubs home field advantage in the WS.

I only have one thing to say about this game:
I HATE Ryan Ludwick. HATE HATE HATE. Ugly jerk.

NOMINATED: Post of the Night!
SWL, I genuflect…
cubnational - July 12, 2009
So what's that...
About the 30th time the Cubs need to tip their cap. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as a fan, I’m tired of tipping my cap. In the words of Piniella “Roll up your damn shirts, go out there and kick somebody’s ass.” SWL where’s that picture?
cubfanwill - July 12, 2009
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2009
Thanks dude!
cubfanwill - July 12, 2009
LOL
lexmarklover - July 12, 2009
Yep
I’ve the cap tipping comment way to many times this year. They had their chances but couldn’t deliver. The 9th inning was the biggest joke of an effort I have ever seen.
Itchy - July 12, 2009

Azul Cachorro - July 12, 2009

12to23to17 - July 12, 2009
Probably to Fantasy Island.
Azul Cachorro - July 12, 2009
No
I don’t get pissed with every loss because I know enough about baseball to know everyone is going to lose at least 40% of their games…
Mike Martin - July 12, 2009
Oh, only 100% of the time
CaliCub - July 12, 2009
I mean to death
cubfanwill - July 12, 2009
The White Sox are 2 games over .500
We have the same winning percentage as the Astros. The f*cking Astros. The Marlins are better than us. Seattle! Waaaaay better than us.
dtpollitt - July 12, 2009
Please QQ moar.
Mike Martin - July 12, 2009
Yep...
And the Astros always play unbelievably well in the second half.
cubfanwill - July 12, 2009
wow .. that blonde on ESPN getting the foul
what a play
cubnational - July 12, 2009
We gotta stay healthy?
Lou? We aren’t healthy now, so staying healthy would be impossible.
Itchy - July 12, 2009
is this part of his post game presser?
if so…keep us updated
12to23to17 - July 12, 2009
Yes it was.
He said the key to the 2nd half is that we gotta stay healthy(we’re not healthy now) and gotta start hitting. That was all I saw.
Itchy - July 12, 2009

12to23to17 - July 12, 2009
The sad thing is...
The Cubs can split with the Nats, and lots of people here will be satisfied with that. You need AT LEAST 3 out of 4
cubfanwill - July 12, 2009
I will only be satisfied
by a SWEEP.
Azul Cachorro - July 12, 2009
splitting with the Cardinals
is a LOT different then splitting with the Nats. We need 3/4 from the Nats.
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2009
For the road
Enjoy and out!
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 12, 2009
