Bleed Cubbie Blue

The First "Big Series" Of The Summer: Cubs vs. Brewers Preview, Thursday 7/2, 7:05 CT

By this time a year ago, the Brewers had already played two series at Wrigley Field. Instead, in 2009, the Cubs have played two series in Milwaukee -- splitting the six games -- and welcome the visitors from up I-94 to Chicago for the first time in 2009. The Cubs had the best ERA in the NL in June -- 3.18 -- but, for reasons we are all well familiar with, had their second losing month of the year (yesterday, I posted that it was the first losing month since August 2007, but the Cubs went 10-11 in April 2009). If the bats can get turned on and the pitching remains consistent, wins will follow.

And, though I suppose we shouldn't expect the "old" Aramis Ramirez back right away -- even he says he's not 100% -- he's headed for a rehab assignment starting tomorrow, and:

If all goes well, the plan is to bring him back for the start of the series with the Braves on Monday.

That's ten days earlier than I had hoped he'd be back (right after the All-Star break), and the Cubs can use an A-Ram at even 85-90% of efficiency.

Interesting take from Chris DeLuca on the dynamic between Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella. I wasn't in favor of signing Raul Ibanez last off season; apparently Lou was, but Hendry wasn't:

Piniella's preference on the free-agent market for a left-handed bat was Raul Ibanez. And despite a recent poll suggesting many of today's players would rather avoid working for Piniella, Ibanez was not among them. They know each other well from their days together with the Seattle Mariners, and Ibanez told the Sun-Times last winter he loved playing for Piniella and was interested in the Cubs.

But Hendry focused on Bradley right out of the box and struck a handshake deal with the controversial player in December, though a final deal couldn't be completed until Hendry took care of some payroll shuffling.

This is not to suggest Hendry and Piniella have drifted off the same page, but the dynamic seems to have changed.

Seth McClung's numbers this year look decent. And his career numbers vs. the Cubs look very good (17.2 innings in 10 relief appearances, 2.55 ERA). And then you look at his career numbers starting (16-24, 5.71 in 50 career starts) and tonight's chances look much better. It would be another good day to sit Alfonso Soriano, who is 1-for-15 lifetime vs. McClung. Kosuke Fukudome is 4-for-6. McClung has never started against the Cubs and he didn't throw too well in his only start so far this year, five days ago vs. the Giants. (And would someone please give him some smile pills?)

Ryan Dempster has faced the Brewers twice already this year, winning on April 12 and losing on May 9. Lifetime he's 8-2, 2.45 vs. Milwaukee and the only one of the Brewers who really pounds him is, strangely enough, Jason Kendall (16-for-43, .419, 3 doubles, 5 walks).

Let's Do It Cubs!
No tweets yet from TwitterMeyer and I want to see Sam Fuld tonight!
Hopefully they bring their bats

and Dempster pitch’s more like last year.

Fuld is leading off and playing left tonight!

do you have the lineup?
Sam Fuld

Starting again, Soriano benched. Per the Score 670 AM

Soriano, you can't see him.

I see nothing
Okay

I’m gonna have to go Eric Hanna right here:

BEST STICK FIGURE EVER!!!!

wow, that's good.
"resting"
you could have Fuld me!
guh-roan.
I have to stick up for my namesake, I kind of liked the pun.
thanks Kali ;-)
on the bench

Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano, given Wednesday off after going 0 for 7 in the previous two games, is 1 for 15 with six strikeouts against McClung.

tanks for the jump Sue.
you're welcome

but i’m not sue. :-)

D'oh, so sorry.

You know in my experience, women don’t mind being called a different name. j/k

my wife begs to differ
Cmon Cubs! Start this series off the right way!
Oh thank goodness for game thread!

that old one was getting really slow

Aram

Lou had said a few weeks ago on a pregame show with Santo that he wanted him back for the big series before all star break. I just hope he is not rushing because Lou wants him. We’ll find out in a few days.

Let’s start this homestand off right with bats and pitching. Thump ’em!

Big series is right

Cubs need 3 out of 4. Get on a roll for a bit.
Interesting Lou wanted Ibanez, oh well, we got what we got.

Lets have a good strong start tonight Demp.

Wow

30:25 K/BB for McClung?

Carlos Marmol!
so when Milton

walks three times, think people will complain?

Course they will

Its Milton.

I'm sure Al will mention it as a bad thing in the recap too.
you guys need to knock off the Milton Martyrdom Madness....

NOBODY IS COMPLAINING ABOUT HIS WALKS. The point Al was making was that as the “middle of the order left handed bat”….we were expecting more from him than just taking a lot of walks. Hell, if he’s going to walk so much, bat him 2nd and let our real power hitters (Lee/Ramirez/Fox) drive him in.

bat him 2nd and let our real power hitters (Lee/Ramirez/Fox) drive him in.

forgot to put theriot as a power hitter :P

I'll remember to add him to the list when Lou remembers to play him in his natural position.
His job

is to score runs. Whether he does that by walking to get on base or by hitting home runs, whenever he doesn’t make an out, that’s doing his job. We were utterly ga-ga over Dome’s ability to walk last season. Now, when suddenly Milton is one of the few Cubs with the patience to draw a walk, he gets flak for it.

I think the point most are trying to make is.............

walks are good but we paid him $30 million to hit with RISP

we're paying him

about $10 million a year to play baseball. That’s what he’s doing. He’s just not batting as well as anyone — himself included — would like.

exactly my point
uh

not really. But whatever.

What happens when the pitchers don't give you the pitches to do so?

Expand your zone and strike out more?

It's a lost cause, man.

These are the same folk that wished to DFA lee 2 months ago and put Hoff at first (Consider how that debate looks now!), who blasted Z for an injury incurred while legging out a bunt. Logic and forward thinking are not things you’ll get here in many cases.

Not advocating you give up the battle… your glass half full attitude is an inspiration for us koolaid drinkers everywhere. Just sayin’, you are unlikely to get anywhere with anything other than reactionary blather.

:D

I know. But I just can’t quit.

It's not as black and white as you make it out to be.
Michael would argue that it doesn't matter...

but please do elaborate.

♫Ebony and Ivory

been together in perfect harmony♪

As simply put as I can make it...

Bradley’s offensive performance thus far makes him better suited to hit almost anywhere in the lineup other than 3rd or 4th. His ability to get on base would better serve the team if he wasn’t being put in RBI positions. Most of my disappointment with him stems from the fact that our shortstop has shown as much power as Bradley has so far. I LIKE HIS PATIENCE AT THE PLATE….I only wish some of his AB’s could result in more x-tra base hits instead of BB.

I'd like to see

him bat 2nd, actually.

Well, than. We agree.

I was more referring to drew’s will to continue to call out people for hating on Bradley even when he does relatively well. We’d all like him to do BETTER, obviously.

Hopefully we can milk our OBP....Allie!
lol i was reading earlier

what a joke

Very interesting about Ibanez - I'd forgotten he played for Lou..

That does throw a little water on the “Lou has to deal with the players he asked Hendry to get for him” theory.

Ibanez...

…ain’t having too bad a year either.

If Piniella can do anything, it is judge hitters. The fact he played for him would have been pretty good info to go off of.

I hear what you are saying

But i don’t think anyone could have anticipated Ibanez having the start he has had.

It propably wouldn’t have happened in Chi-town.

We'll never know!
I didn't see his start happening

Not at 37 and after not being very remarkable on a really bad M’s team last year.

If the issue...

…was truely getting more “left handed”, both Ibanez and Abreu would have been better choices. Bradley has always had more power and been a better hitter from the right side, and when you add in his injury history………

Abreu would've been alright

I was surprised he didn’t get more of a look.

But I liked the Bradley signing. He’s not a great LH, but he’s a good defender and brings some … swagger. Which is what I thought we needed.

Now if he’d hit… I might even be right.

I agree with you about bradley.
I agree with you about bradley.
me too
I was a big Ibanez fan in terms of getting him

But I don’t think too many people here can say “I told you so” when it comes to Bradley’s performance. Some folks here can certainly claim his attitude concerned them prior to the signing, but few people on this board predicted or could have predicted he would become impotent at the plate.

No one saw this coming, obviously. The dropoff is mind boggling and it is hard to blame Hendry when a guy just falls off statistically for no apparent reason.

Soriano too..

And, actually, Miles for that matter (no… he didn’t always suck – career .300 hitter RISP). It’s been a very strange year for the bats. – Kind of like getting “tails” 10 times in a row.

Agree

I liked his signing, of course knew about his volatile nature, but was persuaded by reports that his teammates never had a problem with him. (before I knew of Al’s friends)

I don’t blame Hendry at all for Bradley struglling, and I still have faith in his signing and making a good difference with this team. He has a good track record of hitting, he has just had a long adjustment period.

I like the Bradley signing too..

I think his talent/capability level is WAY above where he’s at right now. I hope it’s just something adjusting to Wrigley and Cubdom – it’s kind of a fishbowl for even low-key players where you need a thick skin. Not sure if he adjusts to this or not at this point..

23 homers and 110 ribbies

is pretty damn good on a “really bad” team.

damn

i knew i shouldn’t have gone off memory… should’ve looked it up.

I will be in attendance

And the Cubs won the last three games I was at. Plus I’ll be wearing my lucky hat (3-0 in it; not the last three either), and I plan to keep score, and when I do that, they’re 4-0. Needless to say, to quote Homer Simpson, “I like those odds!”

That picture of McClung is classic.
Demp and McClung look like they're having a staring contest.
Let's hope...

…Dempster can find (and keep) a good release point tonight.

I hate watching him when every hitter is 2-0/3-1, and he has 80 pitches by the 4th inning.

Which of our pitchers DO you like to watch when they do that?
None...

…but Dempster drives me crazy with it.

Yeah

I like Demps… but watching his 9th inning high wire act nearly killed me

I even hate when the other team's guy is like that

Games take forever that way

I need a fast game tonight like the last few.

Got plans, but hoping I can see most of the game.

Let's hope he turns it around

Dempster is 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA in two starts versus the Brewers in 2009.

Does anyone have the lineup for tonight?

Thanks in advance

Fuld — LF
Riot — SS
Bradley — RF
Lee — LB
Soto — C
Baker — 3b
Blanco — 2b
Demp — P

idk if thats the order though

oh and fukudome in CF and batting before Baker and after Soto

Are you just guessing?

someone posted it in the baker trade thread

He was joking.

oh

boy do i look stupid

I wasn't joking

but that wasn’t official, either. Just my guess.

Haven't seen the offical one yet

hopefully soon

Geez, is like 5:00 ever going to get here?
well.. it is HERE

how about 7?

The game will be over by then for me. :)
It will only be a 2 hr game?
A guy can hope, can't he?
It's 5 oclock somewhere
The question for Lou & Co is not what if they had Raul it is

what to do now with what they have.

Lou has to take this bull by the horns and establish or re establish they play for him and play to win.

Playing Fuld is a start. Moving things around until things click is another

csn

has Fuld starting in LF

Dome in the lineup then..
have not heard them say the whole lineup

Lou to rest him just like other mgrs have done with struggling players

Any ROH fans here?
Wrestling?
yezzir
I don't follow it, but some a few of my friends really like it.

Seems like from the response there’s not much overlap between ROH and MLB fans around here..

Yeah.

I’m an avid fan, went to the show in Chicago Ridge last Saturday. Guess there isn’t much overlap then. Just putting the word out, if anyone here likes wrestling, not the lame WWE garbage, check out ROH!

Soriano leading off Tomorrow

will start tomorrow

Heard it in Lou's Press Conference
And I have tickets for tomorrow.........

just ruined my day

ruins your day to see one of our best hitters in the lineup?
FYI, Padres/Astros

@ Petco…currently in a ….“bee delay.”

Bees seem to be swarming the field. 2 out, top 9th. 6-1 Astros.

Bee delay?

Yikes.

I thought the Bees had retired for the Astros.
Would have been better 2 weeks ago

when they were playing the..A"s.

ROFL!

I heard there was a 3 ft. column of bees in NYC this week too … what is the world coming to? Cue Hitchcock!

Sterling Hitchcock?
That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.
FYI...

This game is also on the MLB Network tonight

It's a 30 minute delay with those pesky bees, right now in SD
I wonder if they get to count the bees in their attendance totals..
Listening to b-cast...

beekeeper on way to Petco Park.

Are they near the crowd?

no theres apparently a couple thousand in a players jacket

The Candyman plays for the Padres?
It's Heath Bell's Jacket..

The Cubs just offered him and the Pads a “sweet” deal for a trade…

(um… sorry.. that was really bad)

Sorry Honey.
Must have been playing the "B" squad
So did this guy smuggle them into the stadium or what?

Is it Hank White?

all is takes is a fallen queen
A-Ram at 85%

Is probably still the best hitter on the team.

seems to bee....

a group of bees…under a jacket…near the stands……nobody wants to go near it. XX Radio says the Padres have a “beekeper” on speed dial…..and he has asked to come to the park.

Were Ted Lilly in attendance...

…he would eat the bees like popcorn and dropkick their hive into the Pacific.

lillys their beekeeper

If Ramirez, Johnson, and Guzman come off the DL Monday...

Who goes? Hart, Fuld, and… Blanco?Fox? That’s going to be a tough choice between Blanco and Fox.

I sure did love watching the glove work on Blanco for the last month.
Me too...

But I like Fox’s bat more, but he becomes mostly a bench player with Aramis back. I think he goes down to get AB’s.

I just hope Blanco stays

we need a solid glove in the IF

Myabe just Hart...

and someone else goes on the DL?

Hoffpauir?

Based on performance..

You have to wonder. He’s not adjusting to the scouting reports on him. (LBR too)

I'd like to see LBR go...

But again, that’d be Hendry admitting a failure. Probably not gonna happen.

Just win Cubs......just win.
what she said.
He does have quite the tailor,

Al Davis.

Why is Bradley hitting cleanup? Seriously?
Beause Sori is not leading off

and there has to be an easy out near the top of the lineup.

He's not an "easy" out...he just doen't hit the ball well enough right now to warrent being in that spot in the lineup.
Would 5th make you happy?
yes...or 2nd or 6th.

he can get on base…and that’s about it lately.

Easy Out?

yeah…. 380 OBP, easy out.

Umm... 358 actually.

But your point stands.

Lee the best hitter right now..

The goals is to put protection behind him. That said, I think Soto is the best choice based on current success. But, if Bradley can’t produce in an RBI slot in the batting order, we need to find out sooner rather than later. Lou’s still trying to figure out what he’s actually got on this team, and it’s taking a lot longer than he thought (Or maybe it’s not, but I’m too chicken to share my conspiracy theory about that.. for now).

Um...
But, if Bradley can’t produce in an RBI slot in the batting order, we need to find out sooner rather than later.

he can’t

But..

He always has until this year

That’s what’s so strange – and that’s why I think Lou’s giving him more time.

We're chasing 3.5 games and have been without our best hitter...

the past month and a half wasn’t the best time to “give him more time”.

The whole team, except for Lee, has struggled most of the season.
Meh..

I’ll vote for giving him more time. If he still sucks on mid August, I’ll get on the “he was a bust” bandwagon.

he doesn't suck...he's just not a middle of the order bat so far this year.
i agree

sample size, too much pressure, etc etc

it's the only time

we’ve had.

The point isn't that he needs more time

The point is that there’s scant evidence that batting #4 in the order negatively affects Bradley’s game. You say “he can’t” hit in the cleanup spot and bring 48 plate appearances as your evidence?

If you want to argue that his skills, as expressed this season, don’t line up well with the duties of a cleanup hitter then I agree fully. He should probably be hitting either ahead of Lee or down in the order until he hits the ball with authority for a few straight games. But don’t use meaningless stats in meaningless quantities.

nice way to throw the baby out with the bathwater...

just label all evidence as meaningless and you win I guess.

his OPS with RISP this season is .816

his career OPS with RISP is .816

Uh oh, here comes the OBP argument.
how much is O, how much is S

Do you have a breakdown somewhere?

i used discubbobulated's link above

check it out

now if we could only have most of that number be from slugging instead of obp....

walks don’t drive in runners unless the bases are loaded.

dusty? dat you?
you know what I mean...
yeah but

i dopnt really care if its O or S, how many RBIs someone has, etc. just keep getting on base and we will score

Thank you, I agree too

We can get RBIs from anywhere in the lineup, not just 3-4-5.

I can't tell whether or with whom you're being agreeable/disagreeable..

You know what really stood out on that statline.. He only has 39 ABs with RISP this year. all year! That might to a little to explain the RBI problems. What the HELL have we been doing with the 1-2 hole all year???

i defn fall on your side of the arg more than SWL's

he needs more time and he has always been a fairly productive hitter

theres not that much about bradley atm that should frighten any pitcher

Really glad Fuld got another start.
let us welcome him into the Fuld
I really hope Font could breakout of this slump tonight..Please
I predict

a Fontenot home run tonight.

I hope your right..getting Font going would be a big lift for this offense
that is

darn close to what I posted.

I don't even want to imagine

how bad Ibanez would have been in RF here.

the don't

he doesn’t play for us.

I wonder if Lou will anger tempchad and bunt in the first inning again.
oh no, please not that again.

It’s like he hasn’t been watching this team at all this year.

I'm thinkin' tempchad took his meds today and will feel better.
don't count on it.
Lou is a clown
with a big red nose!
Off to see Fuld

Uh I mean the game. Al says he is waiting to watch me stare at him but figured when he was first called up I would have to sneak over to CF for a better look but as he is in LF I don’t have to. Ok no game threads for me for the next days sinceI will at all the games.

Go Cubs.

have fun

bring back a win for us!

Game resumes in SD

1-Hour bee delay.

OT - Just wondering

you think it means anything when a girl you want to get to know turns out to be a Cubs fan, and you had no Earthly idea she was even into baseball?

probably not
It means she wants you

or that you’re not very observant. My guess is the latter.

You're Probably Right

I dated a girl a while back that was nuts about the Cubs, but was also a die-hard Michigan fan. So that ended up pretty much a wash, but it was nice during baseball season.

Marry her!
Because.........

she’ll surely stay with you through thick and thin

I'd say you'd have better chance of getting lucky........

if she were a Sox fan

You would also have a better chance of getting stabbed.

wow

you truly are an asshole

uh oh...sorry

is that actually her?

That was bound to happen sooner or later, small world.
I hope the Cubs are as "ON".......

tonight as you are

You're humor wasn't appreciated
ZOMG!

THIS IS THE BEST CHANCE YOU WILL HAVE WITH HER DUDE! I SAY TO TOTALLY GO FOR IT AND GET YOUR MACK ON! MY BEST FRIEND ERIC HAD LIKE THE EXACT SAME SITUATION AND HE GOT TO 2ND BASE WITH THE GIRL AND THEY TOTALLY WERE BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND FOR OVER A MONTH! I GOTTA GO UPDATE MY MYSPACE PAGE NOW! L8TR!

is this necessary?

if you have a problem with my passing thought you don’t have to be an asshole about it

He's joking, dude
CubsFan87........

doesn’t know of Eric

It's even better reading this while looking at Britney's picture and imagining her talking.
LOL

too true

she can talk?
btw I am still hot for SWL's user pic
And appaerntly she has a friend named Eric...
That's cool

For my money, it probably doesn’t mean anything…but I’m also the most cynical person in the world when it comes to women…

Good luck!

good god

stop asking questions, and ask her OUT!

My public apology to CubsFan87

Dude, I give everyone a hard time here…it’s not personal. My ZOMG comment was a parody of an incredibly funny fanpost here. The knife-girl pic was making fun of Clutche’s White Sox comment. Sorry if I’ve destroyed our friendship.

TOO LATE

I think he already hung himself

Just keep changing names

EricHanna
tempchad
CubsFan87

Eric and tempchad

are polar opposites. One can’t use capitalization, one can’t not use it.

naw

its fine, my apologies for overreacting

Whew..........

hang in there

umm

yeah… i’ll do that

bad choice of words

this a fun place despite the abuse at time.

That's OK.. I told someone to piss off earlier..

I soaid “sorry dude” .. Now we’re best buds.. Right DiMarco?. We were totally talking about wrestling earlier. It’s cool.. No big deal. Kum ba ya.

you know it.

anybody who knows ROH is good in my book

Kum ba ya

Ronnie?

I think thats..

(sigh).. Aw Jeez! Why?Why?Why?Why?
“Ron.. that was just ball one”

He was singing Kum-ba-ya...

On the air the other day.

That was close..........

thought he jumped for a minute

No one posted a jump, did we miss it?
don't think so
just a question

do you have a thing for suicides?

no I avoid them, you?
its just

that you mention hanging and jumping… but anyways i avoid them as well

just joking with you
i know

as i was with you

You guys should get a room or a radio show...i'm not sure which.
that just creeps me out
SWL. .. you are off the chain boss
You work for SWL?

Does he post funny pictures all over the office?

Well this site is all about him, dont you know?
allow me to fumigate my wisdom on you...

“off the chain” is slang for “really neato” and “boss” is slang for “swell”.

i think

“boss” is more like “the man” or “the dude”

boss=Springsteen

BBM...

The good ol’ days.

How did he ever lose?

He had all that security guard stuff (baton, cuffs) – I’m still amazed Big Boss Man didn’t win more belts.

I'm the boss of you

Bill Clinton sure has lost his appeal after the presidency ended.
On the chain would be "really bad"?

I’m kidding about all of this btw.

let's just say SWL have mutual commercial interests

that's a gas

BTW, I put my money on 5 every time.. the breakfast of champions

Is that a Tom Hanks trash receptacle? Classic.
Come up with something for ERIC
besides his jr high yearbook photo?

Excellent work
i'll try

I SUPPOSE ERIC CAN WALK ON WATER
He has the look of a guy that just got to 2nd base with the whole cheerleading squad.
pinky ring says it all.......

sorry if I offended the Italian fans

but no italian horn?
Members Only jacket

he looks like little pete without the freckles

If Pete had a son, wouldn't his name be RePete?
and his son has a son = ThreePete
Doesn't Pete Carroll own the rights to that?

Or Pat Riley?

the texas pinky ring is a real turn on
haven't seen it
If the Cubs win today.. NL Central 1-5 standings

will be withing three games of each other.

Within.. I can't type for sh!t today..
It'll be cool when 1-5 are the same with games back and total games back.
I can just see the headline..

Cubs lose series finale to Milwaukee, fall below .500 to fifth in the division. 1/2 game out of first.

Wrong.........

Cubs win 3 out of 4 to pull within 1.5 games of Brewers

Damn.. I noticed that too... Was hoping you'd all let it slide..
would be cool, but it's not possible

for the cubs to end this series a half game out.

They can be: .5 ahead, 1.5 behind, 3.5 behind, 5.5 behind, or 7.5 behind

I said 1.5 out
If you understand how the reply feature works,

you can see I was replying to DisCUBbobulated, not you.

oooooh, door number 1 please.
Holy sh!t... Almost game time.. biggest series of the year..

I don’t know wether to cheer, or just start drinking heavily just in case..

I'm already...
