The I-Cubs lost the Albuquerque Isotopes, 4-2.
Esmailin Caridad kept the ball in the park, but allowed six doubles on the way to allowing four runs in five innings. Cardiad gave up eight hits total. He walked three and struck out three. Caridad saw his record fall to 5-10.
Catcher Chris Robinson was 2 for 4 and scored once. Second baseman Aaron Miles was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs blacklisted the Sarasota Reds, 3-1.
Starter Chris Carpenter pitched tonight after having his last start bumped back two days and allowed only one unearned run over four innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three.
Jose Pina threw a perfect seventh inning to get the win. He didn't strike out anyone.
David Cales pitched the final two innings without allowing a run for his 12th save. Cales allowed one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out two.
Center fielder Tony Campana hit a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning to account for all of Daytona's scoring. Campana was 1 for 4.
The Chiefs skinned the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 12-5.
Aaron Shafer started and got the win with five innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits. Shafer walked one and struck out three.
First baseman Rebel Ridling hit his 11th home run today in the first inning. Ridling was 1 for 2 with three walks this afternoon. Ridling scored three times and had two RBI off of the HR.
Third baseman Jovan Rosa hit a grand slam in the third inning. It was his second home run in the Midwest League. Rosa was 2 for 5 with a double and six RBI total. He also scored twice.
Right fielder Kyler Burke went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Burke scored twice and had one RBI.
Center fielder David Macias was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. Macias scored once.
Boise Hawks
The Boise Hawks expelled the Eugene Emeralds, 7-4
Jeff Antigua earned the win today with an impressive relief outing. Antigua pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits. That's pretty good, but the impressive part was that he struck out eleven. Antigua walked two.
Ryan Sontag pitched a scoreless ninth and got his second save. He gave up one hit and struck out one.
Shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and right fielder Jose Valdez both were 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Valdez also had a steal.
Center fielder Brett Jackson was only 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI, but that was good enough to extend his streak of reaching base to 22 games. He has a seven-game hitting streak.
AZL Cubs
DJ LeMahieu was 3 for 5.

Josh...
I noticed that the starting pitchers in the minors usually get pulled after five innings. Is there any reason why they can’t go seven or eight if they are pitching well?

I think a good part of it
is because in the minors they have to get everybody their innings. Also minor league pitchers are usually kept on pretty strict pitch counts/inning counts so that they don’t throw out their arms before they reach the majors.
I forget what level it was last year, I want to say Peoria or Boise the starters usually didn’t even go as many as 5 because they had too many arms that needed to throw

What you said
especially in Boise and Arizona, they are trying to get everyone a chance to pitch. That lessens as you go up the ladder. There’s also the issue of keeping young arms healthy, as you note.

He is left handed which is good
since the cubs seem to be lacking good LHPs currently. I think he got shelled in his first appearance of the year but has been really good since then.
AZ Phil had pegged him as one of the better pitchers going to Boise. I am not sure why they don’t have him starting since even when he doesn’t he usually goes ~4 innings.

Antigua
Antigua’s first outing wasn’t bad (4 IP, 2 ER). It was his July 15 outing where he gave up 4 in 4 that has his ERA up at 2.30 (yes, up).

Made his pro debut in the DSL at age 17 and was in the AZL last year.
Low 90s sinking FB, good change and an ok curve. Looks like the sink is all but gone this season given his GO-AO numbers.

gaub's ERA in Iowa
is below one. is he worth a callup, or only if bj ryan isn’t worth the effort?
we’re at 36+2 on the 40 man. cotts and chad fox can be moved to the 60-day, if needed. that takes them off the 40 man. any more than 40 means someone has to get DFA’d. and we still need another catcher.

He just came back from injury and has not pitched much at AA or even AAA
so they probably want to give him some more time. I look for him to be the Cubs LOOGY soon though.

Depends on how you evaluate things
Castro is more advanced. Lee is farther away and is riskier, but probably has more upside (although it’s not like Castro has a low ceiling.)

He’s listed as a 3B… but he’s in Daytona with Vitters. Yesterday, he played LF. Is he a Chone Figgins-type (25 SBs on the year)?

Well he definitely doesn't have the power
to stick at the hot corner. If I recall correctly his best defensive position is 2nd but he can play 2nd, 3rd, and all OF spots. To me he seems like a Chone Figgins type but I’ll leave that analysis to the pros(Josh, toonster, outshined)

Brooks Raley, Chad Taylor, Keenyn Walker, or Barrett Dail? And I have no idea on them, other than their names, and when they were drafted.
Outside of those four (by my info), they only have four more to sign in their top 29. It would be nice to see this class as productive as 2008 has been.
