Bleed Cubbie Blue

Iowa... Er, Chicago Cubs Shut Out Astros 12-0

On Opening Day, if I had told you that sometime in midsummer, I would see Randy Wells and Mitch Atkins combine on a shutout at Wrigley Field, you probably would have assumed I was talking about the "Road to Wrigley" game that's going to take place on August 9 between Iowa and Las Vegas (note on that page it still says Jake Fox is a "rising star" playing for Iowa -- maybe that needs to be updated).

Instead, Wells, who is making a strong case for NL Rookie of the Year, threw eight shutout innings, allowing just six singles and not permitting a runner past first base until the eighth inning, and Atkins, in his major league debut, threw a scoreless ninth to finish off a 12-0 shutout of the Astros, the Cubs' biggest shutout victory in more than four years, since they blanked the Marlins 14-0 on June 14, 2005, behind a five-hit shutout by Sergio Mitre. 19 outs today were recorded on ground balls and the Cubs turned four double plays behind Wells and Atkins.

I was kind of hoping Wells could keep his pitch count down in the 7th and 8th innings so he could have a shot at a CG shutout -- you don't see many of those any more, and the Cubs' only CG this year is by Sean Marshall in a five-inning, rain-shortened win over the Pirates on May 26. But with Wells at 110 pitches through eight innings and a fresh arm in Atkins in the pen, it was probably wise to get Wells out of there and rest him up for his next start. Wells' ERA, now 2.85, would rank eighth in the league if he had enough innings to qualify. His eight innings today give him 95; the Cubs have played 99 games, so he'd need to throw a CG to qualify after his next start. More likely, it'll take two starts to get him there, but Wells, who with his seventh win now has more than any Cub rookie pitcher in a season since Kerry Wood's 13 in 1998, has been just about the most consistent pitcher the Cubs have had since his recall. He has gone at least six innings in 12 of his 15 starts and has, arguably, had only one really bad start among the 15.

In addition to Wells, the offense came out smoking in the first inning and never stopped.

Star-divide

The Cubs pounded Mike Hampton for five hits and two walks in the first inning; along with a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, the big blow was Alfonso Soriano's three-run homer (I guess Soriano's back on track now, wouldn't you say?) and though Hampton probably would have been yanked early in most circumstances, the Astros' beleaguered bullpen status meant that Hampton had to slog through three more innings, taking one for the team, before he was removed for a pinch-hitter. All told he took 79 pitches to get 12 outs, allowed four walks, eight hits, and nine earned runs, including a second homer by Aramis Ramirez. You know by now if you follow me or ballhawk on Twitter that Ballhawk Ken caught A-Ram's HR on the fly, right near the corner of Waveland & Kenmore. He said "the ball caught me, rather than me catching it", but he is being too modest. I watched the ball all the way into Ken's glove and it was a solid catch, very impressive. He said after the game that he caught one from Khalil Greene last year, but can't remember the last Cub HR he caught on the fly. Just got another tweet from Ken thanking Ballhawk Jeff for tracking down A-Ram's car and getting Aramis to sign the ball for him.

By the middle innings Lou had started to empty his bench; the first to sit was Reed Johnson, who left after fouling a ball off his foot in the first inning. Late radio reports indicate that Johnson has a fractured bone in his foot and may be out a month -- calling Sam Fuld, I suppose, yet another Iowa recall.

After the seventh inning, the bench totally emptied out and more players who spent much time at Iowa wound up in the game, including Jake Fox, who drove in a pair of runs with a sac fly and a single, and Andres Blanco, who hit his first major league home run off the RF foul pole in the 8th. Congratulations to him, and props to the Cubs, who can win this series tomorrow and, if the Dodgers can cooperate by beating the Cardinals tonight, take over first place again later this evening.

Final shout-out to a young couple originally from England, now living in Chicago, who are "just getting into baseball", attending the game with one of their dads (sorry, I never did find out which!) -- welcome to Chicago and the Cubs, you sure saw a special game today.

First? Yeowza!
Beuller?...Beuller?...Beuller?
Great game by Wells
not permitting a runner past first base until the second inning

How is this a great accomplishment though?

Should be 8th inning....
Ok

I didn’t watch the game, and didn’t realized he limited them until his last inning.

Crap.

It WAS the 8th inning. I mistyped. I’ll fix the post.

Gee. I dunno. I've seen some Cubs' pitching staffs over the years where that WOULD have been quite an accomplishment...
Heilman, Shark, and last year's Howry to name a few!
I named no names, sir!

But if the glove fits, you must acquit…

The injuries...oh, the injuries....

Let’s hope Saint Fuld keeps up his magic….

Does that mean Kosuke is full time CF?

I suppose

if Fuld is called up to replace Reed, he’ll take Reed’s spot. But… FULD IS A LEFTY! Utto…

the more the merrier, right?
Eh

Won’t see a LHP in either FLA or CIN series… hopefully it won’t really be an issue.

I expect Fuld will get about two starts per week

rotating between LF and CF and come A LOT in the 9th as a defensive replacement.

I'm fine with that!
We're talking Lou here remember.
Actually that is largely how Lou did use him

but yes only 3 starts in I think 20 games so maybe one start a week but Lou got over the " not replacing Sori he is a superstar" thing. He used Fuld often in the 9th for both Sori and Bradley. Heck in one of the one run games he had Fuld in left, RJ in center
and Dome in RF in the 9th. It was a thing of beauty, your heart did not pound 200 beats a minute on any fly ball.

True...

That outfield was great for the 9th. You wonder with Sori coming around at the plate if he’ll be as quick to replace him.

In a ONE run game I think he will do it

( assuming of course the Cubs are LEADING by that run)

You know he's half-Jewish

right?

Yes

but he just got married in Catholic church so I don’t think he would take offense.

that's ok.

wasn’t his mother’s side anyway ;-)

This Game couldn't have come at a better time.

Hats off to Wells. Awesome job. Pen is rested, should be go to go for a series win tomorrow!

great win!

my coworker is a houston fan, i showed him the score in the 8th, noting it was “a close one”…. wow, what a display of great offense and great pitching/defense!!

How far away is Wells from becoming eligible for the ERA title?

What’s the required IP’s again?

Innings Pitched has to equal team games played

I think.

So probably in 2 games

Possibly 3

95 IP after today

Cubs have played 99 games. He should be eligible after next start.

Not quite.

Next start will be in game 104. He’d have to throw nine innings. Probably two more starts.

YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!

My bad.

Thanks, Al

Way to go Wells!

I had to miss an hour to sit in a dentist’s chair. It was sweet to come out and hear he was still shutting them out.

Was your appointment at 2:30?
yes
Ba-da-BUM. CHING!
What is the difference between Yankee fans and dentists?

One roots for the yanks, and the other yanks for the roots.

thats a cute one!

i’ll have to remember that

Here's another...

Why did the coach kick Cinderella off the baseball team?

Because she ran away from the ball.

:-)

That’s cute too.

I thought I was the only one that made that joke.

Guess not. Makes me feel good that I’m not the only one amused by it.

Ranks right up there with: Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Because 7 8 9.

(seven ate nine for those not familiar with this oldy but goodie).

Or why did the elephant wear tennies?
Because nine-ies were too small...
and elevensies were too big...

Give that man a cigar!

Why did the elephant stand on the marshmallow?
Why?
So he wouldn't fall into the hot chocolate.

Bet you wish you didn’t ask.

I've never heard that one before

:-)

Why did the elephant paint his toe nails red ?

So he could hide himself in the cherry tree.

anybody outside of the organization who the Cubs could grab

to play center against lefties until Reed gets back? Just a thought …

what anout

So Taguchi

No kidding -

How did we all forget Taguchi?

No thank you
Is Taguchi on the 40-man?

IIRC it’s almost full… management might prefer someone that’s already on it.

ROY talk for Wells?

Sorry if this has been discussed to death, but does Wells have a legitimate shot at ROY honors once he qualifies for the ERA title? I’d like to think he would at least be in the discussion.

I think it's between him and Rasmus at this point...

It’s sad to say, but it’ll probably come down to how many wins Wells has.

is JA eligable?
JA happ i mean
Will be by the end of the year.
Happ

Someone will know for sure, but he may have exceeded innings last year out of the bullpen.

I was glad to see that the Phils didn’t trade J.A. away for Halladay, or include him in the Lee deal. IMHO it will prove to be a wise decision.

J.A. Happ

The pride of Peru, Ill. Was a heck of a basketball player at St. Bede Academy.

NBF

Are you from the IL. Valley?

Peoria

But have spent many a night eating/drinking my way through Spring Valley, Ladd, LaSalle and Peru. Great area. U from there?

Spring Valley

Born and raised. Graduate of Hall High School.

One could make a career out of eating/drinking their way through IL. Valley.

Good friends with the Happ family. (I am closer in age to his two older sisters.)

I remember seeing Happ play

in the Tri-County tournament. Seems like last week. Hall had some great bkb teams back in the day, too — Shawn Jeppson, et al.

Which do you prefer, RIp’s or Lanuti’s?

Ross Kenseth attends

St. Bede Academy as well.

That’s a nice name for the “famous alumni” collection…kid is going places too.

Jeppson's

one of my good buddies. I played on those teams “back in the day.” You’re making me feel really old, haha.

Have to go with Rip’s. Lanuti’s has great pasta though.

only had 31 2/3 innings last year

according to bbref.com

So you are saying Fuld wont get enough at bats ?

As always I kid , I kid

Makes those early ND tough to take.
Jordan Zimmerman(n)

Would he be in the ROY consideration?

they probably say he is

but probably not….just because he plays for the Nationals….they tend to look at guys that help out a good team first right?

Zimm

Not sure if he would qualify or not, but I tend to agree with HFH. The Cubs and Cards are going to finish with a better record than the Nats regardless of if either make the post season. Can’t see the ROY going to a guy on the worst team in MLB if there are two candidates on winning teams.

Unless the guy on the bad team...

… is having such a monster year, I’d guess the voters would choose a ROY who helps out a winning team.

Zimmermann might have been in contention before going on the DL

He’s probably not going to start many more games before the end of the year.

Back in the Day

If I recall correctly, Billy Willaims and Kenny Hubbs were consecutive ROYs on some really bad Cubs teams in ’61 & ’62. Both were good and deserving, but neither had what would be considered “monster years.”

Is Clayton Kershaw not a rookie?
Dont think so

107 innings last year.

thanks, right after posting it i looked it up

he made 20 starts so he’s no longer eligible.

Postgame interview w/ Koyie Hill...

definately makes me want to root for the guy.

Happy to be there. Happy to be playing. Told Randy Bush, “The way I’m hitting, I’m certainly solidifying my ‘back up catcher’ reputation” and then laughed. Didn’t really care what the team’s record was when he was behind the plate (it’s like 34-19 or something)—gave all the credit to the pitching staff.

Certainly humble and seems like a truly nice guy.

I think the pitching staff should give credit to Hill.

From everything I’ve heard he calls a great game, plus plays outstanding defense. We can live with the .200 average right now because everyone else is hitting.

There are few catchers that have a bat worth caring about.

All I want out of my catcher is good defense, calling a good game, and the ability to sing Z a song when he gets in one of his moods.

Can Hill sing to Z in Spanish?
How about Lemon Tree? It's a nice song. Trini Lopez as I remember.

That should calm him down.

Tippy-toe! Tippy-toe!

Uh, Lemon Tree…

Most of what a good catcher...

…does in invisible to most fans, and I agree Hill should get some kudos.

I'm starting to think of Soto as the "backup catcher".
hmm

I don’t know if we could go that far… :P

Len and Bob call him

Iron Man.

Is his wife's name Pepper?
I'm really starting to like Randy Wells. He is solid as a rock

every time out and he seems to have that knack of missing the sweet spot of the opponent’s bat. He has that nice smooth motion that seems to be easy on the arm and yet he can throw his fastball consistently in the low to mid 90’s. He is clearly the most consistent pitcher on the staff right now.

i agree

and Randy said it best when he first came up. he knew he didn’t have the overpowering, nasty stuff so he learned how to pitch with subpar stuff, and clearly, so far, it’s working.

2 straight ROY's for cubs???
If so

hopefully Randy has a more successful sophomore campaign than Geo has so far.

Hopefully Wells has...

…a different off-season workout plan than Geo.

Just lay off

the weed.

and the pizzas
Mmmmmmm. Pizza...............
Hey,

it didn’t seem to hurt Fergie Jenkins too badly!

Hmmmm...

maybe the Cub’s farm system ain’t so bad as everyone makes it out to be.

No you are only allowed to bring up the busts of the system..

not the successes.

It's not and as someone who watched many of these guys play as Lugnuts, it's a bad rap.
Internet was down during game

But I watched and liked what I saw. We need more of this!

Today was my second (and presumably last) game of the season

and I’ve seen 2 great ones…the 13 inning win vs Cleveland on June 20, and today’s rout.

Consider yourself very

lucky. I was there last night – picked the wrong game. In fact I think I am like 2-8 so far after going 17-3 last year.

UGH!

Remember: your WORST day at the ballpark beats your BEST day at work...
I can think of some days in October the past 6 years

where that wouldn’t be true.

Hmm. Well, I was at one in 2003. Gotta say, it tests that theory, but I still wouldn't have given up being there for that game for anything.
I'm 0-1

I picked the stupid game where Lou decided to give up because Lincecum was pitching.

im 0 - 2

i have yet to sing gocubsgo

I'm 0-2

as well thanks to the Twins.

was the 13 inning vs indians the come back game or woodys wild pitch
The 13-inning game was won on Wood's wild pitch.
i was stunned when aaron miles contributed to the win
That was the only time.
We can

Stop worrying about Wells now.

If he was tipping his pitches, Houston obviously didn't get the memo.
Happy for the big win

angry that my wisdom teeth (or where they were) are killin me!

Pudding is your friend.
I must have been lucky

I was eating solid food the next day without any meds. Having none impacted clearly helped.

Yeah, beer IS a non-solid...
I still have my wisdom teeth

And I have no complaints.

Took me five days of non-solid food.

I was not very happy about it, either.

Ouch

makes my dental visit today seem like a walk in the park

Haha ya I'm not complaining about the ice cream

But appelsauce is getting a little old

Ouch.

I know what you’re going through, I had surgery to remove mine at age 14.

hopefully they gave you a nice healthy vicoden scrip

By the next day they didn’t bother me as long as I stayed reasonably doped up.

How interesting

to see Wells today (again I happened to be there at his Sunday night pre-ASG loss), and see what crap our $45MM pitcher gave us last night.

Jeez, Hendry got lucky with this converted catcher! lol

Terrific ass-whooping.

I hope we can do the same to the Cards this year.

Crap? He was coming off an injury. Obviously he was wild in the strike

zone last night but I would think you would at least give him a pass for one start.

+1. Ryan's earned it. Just stay off the fence young man!
How has he earned it?

He hasn’t had control for more than 2 starts this whole season.

Last year my friend.

WAY above expectations. And with all the issues surrounding his baby, he gets slack this year in my book

Ah so we should give him a break

because he got in the best shape of his life for a contract year and had an outlier season. Everybody knew he would return to a control issue pitcher that walked too many this season.

So is your issue with Dempster or Hendry?
Hendry's fault for the deal

But that doesn’t mean I have to like Dempster. Same reason why half this plate curses Soriano’s and Bradley’s names.

I cures their NUMBERS.
and I'm cursing Dempster's numbers
That's NUM3ERS...
That show

sucks, and so do Dempster’s numbers this season. Last year could have been a fluke.

Really? Everybody knew this?

You sound like an ass.

So you expected Dempster to repeat his performance from last season?
You mean did I expect him to win 18 games? No.

But I also didn’t expect him to break his toe jumping over a railing.

But even healthy he hasn't been close to the same pitcher

and I don’t really think it was reasonable to think he could.

might have had to do with his daughter

but idk i could be wrong

Derrek Lee didn't let his issues interfere with his play

Listen I feel awful about Dempster’s personal situation, and certainly its unfair to expect him to pitch like a Cy Young winner while he is going through that crap.

Still, and this lies with Jim Hendry more than Dempster, shelling out $56 million for a guy who has been mediocre throughout his career because he had one good season isn’t smart.

How many times do GMs have to see a guy magically do better in his contract season and then fall off after cashing in before they wake up? Now we get to watch Dempster go 3-2 on every batter and walk himself into a jam every inning for the next 3.5 years.

Sounds to me like

Milton Bradley.

Now you're talking about being reasonable?
Not that Atkins

Didn’t look good, but I don’t see why he was called up over Caridad, Mathes, or even Ascanio.

Caridad and Mathes aren't on the 40-man roster.

Atkins is probably here only for a cuppa coffee.

Ascanio?

He looked good when he was up here before, and I never understood why he was sent down in the first place.

Ascanio could come back for Samardzija any time.
Another question

If someone on the 40 man gets hurt (ie: Patton, Waddell) can you replace them with someone else for the time they’re on the DL?

Did Ascanio get into Lou's doghouse when he was up?

With all the moves in the bullpen the last few days, I was surprised he wasn’t one of them.

Or gaub

Gaub has only pitched a handful of games at AAA.

I doubt he’s ready.

Great win

and great to see Randy Wells not go to the zoo for any batters today. Perfect day of baseball

Great win

riding bike at the gym saw the bottom line post the 6 spot in the first, wonderful.
Need to get the win tomorrow, hopefully Hart can gets us a good 6 innings.
Johnson getting hurt stinks. Hendry will make a move within the next 48 hours for a player or two. I would be surprise if Jimbo doesn’t pull something.

You must ride the bike every game from first pitch to last from here on out.

No excuses! Get going!

As long as I get

Nacho’s and Old Style between innings

Is your exercise bike in the can? It'll need to be...
ROY Question

Is Happ from Phillies a rookie? If so, hands down he deserves it more than Wells. If not, he’s making a really strong point. In fact, had he been on the team since April, we would be saying:
1) He’s the best pitcher on the staff
2) He could be in CY Young running.

He was until about 3 hours ago

Cliff Lee is on board, along with Cole Hamels

Cole is not Cy Young material this year

And Cliff Lee could be in that debate that CC was in last year. Plus Cliff Lee is not as dominate as he was last year.

that is just so wrong

Cliff Lee has only had one start (since his first two) that is not a quality start and LH batters only have one HR off him. His stuff is stiff nasty. He just has a crappy bullpen behind him—a bunch of Heilmans can make any Cy Young turn into Cy Old. I believe his ERA (after the first two games) is under 2.90, and that is in the AL. Pretty impressive—not 3 loss stuff, but on any other team, this guy would be in the Cy Young conversation.

Phillies

With addition of Lee and Pedro the Phillies are going to have a rotation decision to make. Even though J.A. has put up crazy numbers this year, I would guess that he goes into the ’pen based on his success there last year.

Hamels hasn't been his last year self

But Lee is certainly better.

And Randy Wells

Would be the best pitcher on the Phillies staff too. Randy Wells could be in the Cy Young running too.

Agree with this

No reason why Happ deserves it over Wells hands down. Wells had a better ERA over his first 12 starts (which is where Happ sits now). He would have had more wins if the Phillies lineup was batting instead of the Cubs.

Or if...

This Cubs offense showed up earlier in the year.

Right

Wells should have about 3 more wins if the Cubs offense and bullpen hadn’t thwarted some of his early wins.

it isnt that hard to be the best pitcher for the 09 phillies
True

But he’s also very good.

Randy Wells

Is very good too.

You might even make comparisons with Randy Wells
I will

But I think he’s slightly better. Wells is awesome though and I can never take that away from him.

How about we let the rest of the season play out

and then give out the awards? :)

Fair enough
Well, with the offense

they have you can afford to give up a 5 spot and get the win. They are still the team to beat

A 10-5 lead felt too close
F. Sanchez is a Giant.
Crap
Whatever

We don’t need him at that price. If they were taking him for Miles, that’d be a different story . . .

It was for Tim Alderson straight up

He’s no better than Cashner.

$$$

This team doesn’t have a lot of those to spend

He's not that tall.
Well

I didn’t expect him. I wanted him, but didn’t expect him.

Can you imagine being

a Pirates fan? Really, every freaking year.

Do the Pirates

have anyone left on their roster with significant major league experience? They’ve traded away their 4 best players.

Looks like he hasn't passed the physical yet

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4364832

Yeah, I don't see anywhere this has been confirmed yet.
And Cliff Lee to the Phiillies ....

I don’t think it’s that great of a deal. The Phillies give up their 2, 3, 4, and 10 prospects for a pitcher that very well could get rocked at CBP. Sure he had a great year last year, I just don’t think he’s an ace pitcher.

Maybe preseason rankings

but the Phils did not give up the guys they wanted to keep in Drabek, Brown and Taylor. It was Drabek that apparently held up the Halladay deal.

This one is going to drive Sori haters nuts.

Post game quote.

‘’If you’re hot and hit a leadoff homer, it’s only one run,‘’ he said. ’’But being hot like now … first at-bat, first pitch, I hit a three-run homer.

’’I’m very comfortable. I don’t have pressure to get on base. Just see the ball and hit it. I like to score a lot of runs, but now I can get a lot of RBIs.’’

I’m terrible at the quote box feature, so here’s the link.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=290729116

+1

Me and you can make a Fonzi fan club.

Me and you and a dog named Boo...
Great....

now that song is in my head….thanks alot.

Travellin' and livin' off the land...
I'm in the Fonzi fan club.

Although he doesn’t make it very easy on me sometimes….

No kidding

When he’s hot you wonder how he ever goes cold… and when he’s cold you wonder how he ever hit a ball on a line in his life. LOL

He's the microfridge!

Hot – cold – hot – cold – hot – cold

All in one compact package!

Sounds like menopause to me...
Better late than never

Thanks Sori for finally realizing something everyone but you and Lou knew for years.

Really, only Lou's

He’s the one who draws up the lineup every day. Sori wouldn’t have gone on strike.

Please find one qoute where Soriano said he had to bat leadoff

He preferred it, so what. This thinking that Soriano dictated anything is BS.

thank you.

+1 rec’d. Sheesh.

This is probably the most obvious thing I've seen I the last 20 years

that others including Lou and Sori didn’t. What a shame it took so long to get to this point, but at least we are moving forward with a lineup that can actually do some serious damage.

It's all part of Lou's master plan to just barely win the Central Division title and go into the playoffs on a roll

Doesn’t want to risk winning it too early and having a letdown.

He’s genius, I tell you. Pure genius!!!

lou also invented the vaccine for swine flu

hes a saint

Yeah winning with a week to play didn't work out so...

Hey Demp why don’t you hop over that fence right there, I dare you.

This quote will also drive the Sori defenders nuts.

Especially the ones who said he’s only comfortable in the leadoff spot, so we should just leave him there, because we won 97 games with Sori batting leadoff.

You all know who you are.

And they were all sure of themselves too.

Like the sun sets in the west kind of sure. Goes to show you.

Good point. I bought into that whole notion.

Consider me foolish. It should have been obvious coming from the same guy who put up a stink about moving to the outfield. Then moving from centerfield. Sorry Sori, I love ya, but your instincts are wrong.

He is now officially on the Costanza plan.

“Do the opposite.”

Why did it all...

…turn out like this for me? I had so much promise. I was personable, I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but … I was perceptive. I always know when someone’s uncomfortable at a party. It became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I’ve ever made, in my entire life, has been wrong. My life is the opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every of life, be it something to wear, something to eat … It’s all been wrong.

I'm just hoping he doesn't

drape himself in velvet.

And this will feed the Sori haters

who consistently make up the story that he said he needed to bat leadoff. This in spite of the fact that he always said he would do want Piniella wanted. Lou wanted him there.

these quotes

Of course Soriano is going to say he likes batting 6th now. He probably has old quotes saying he loved batting leadoff.

When teams are winning players will say that whatever is going on at that point is the greatest thing ever.

I understand your point

Saying he prefers leadoff is natural. I bet DLee prefers #3 too. There were also people complaining before last season when DeRosa commented that he preferred a single position but would do whatever Piniella wanted. Personal preference isn’t necessarily bad.

I’m not defendng Soriano in terms of his overall game. Yes, he has holes, big holes. He’s also paid way too much. I just don’t like the constant comments about his selfishness and that he cares for his stats more than the team. He has never shown that. It reminds me of the people that said Jacque Jones was lazy and just wanted his paycheck.

I'm guilty.
Soriano would have come out of the slump just the same

If he was batting leadoff. Its over now, he’s down the lineup and we are winning.

The numbers

were pretty specific. But like I said. As long as it works. It’s not like I’m going to stop being a fan of Soriano because he’s hitting sixth. :D

as long as it works.
Rich Hill to the DL for Baltimore

Here’s the link. Whom are we going to get for Hill now?

A bag with one less ball in it...
Oh come on

We acted in good faith . The least they can give us is some crab cakes.

A used infield rake is about all we're gonna get.
And some "Old Bay" to sprinkle on them...
the crab cakes, not the rakes...

NOTHING makes rakes taste good…

a bat donut
Mmmmmm. Donuts......
A slice of

Felix Pie

Randy Wells is my hero.

That is all.

You think...

We’ll browse the scrap heap for a right-handed CF’er? Not sure how Fuld fairs against lefties.

Doesn’t matter now, but I wonder if we would’ve gone after Brian Anderson if he didn’t get traded yesterday.

Possibly.

Don’t know who, if anyone, is still out there.

We have little enough to trade

so lets work on lefty for the bullpen.

Well, he's more of a LFer...

…but I heard Moises was at Wrigley for today’s game. Maybe Lou will move Soriano to center and we can go with the all slugger outfield again like we did back in Sammy’s day… ;-)

I'm guessing Moises can still hit, but would rather tend to his stable of race horses at this stage...
Keep the pee-free clubhouse.
I know he's not RH...

…but give Jimmy Ballgame a call just for old times sakes?

Is Dome that bad against LHP lifetime?

I am biased as a big Fukudome fan, but hasn’t he been performing well enough in CF and lead-off to be our everyday guy while Reed is out?

It seems like...

The platoon has worked out well for Dome, and he’s been hitting pretty good off lefties. I don’t think they want to expose him again and risk another slump. I’m a Dome fan too though, so I wouldn’t mind seeing if he can handle it.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=fukudko01&year=&t=b#plato
.179 off LHP, thats TERRIBLE

Sorry...

I meant off righties. They wouldn’t want to expose him again off lefties.

Last year....

…he actually hit lefties better than righties. This year he’s been pretty awful, although it’s a pretty small sample size.

Play Milton

in CF and Jake Fox in RF

will there be a

cards – dodgers thread tonight?

That would be cool. I don't expect the Cards to win three in a row over the Dodgers...
I didn't expect the Brewers to get their asses kicked by the Nationals.

This did not, however, limit my enjoyment of it in any way.

is the suds nat series a 3 game set or 4 games?
4 games.

2 more opportunities to be utterly humiliated.

if the nats win the series (sweep or not)

i will not be held accountable for my actions

Brewers are falling apart quickly...

I am enjoying every loss by the Suds, as i hate them with a passion.

Ned Yost must be sleeping well these days.
i love when the brewers

FAIL.

He doesn't have to listen to Braun run his mouth anymore...

Maybe Braun should learn to actually play defense, and keep his mouth shut.

That would

certainly make the starting pitchers they already have look a whole lot better

Those losses don't count though.

The nats, after all, aren’t a real team. Right?

Alumni news

Eric Patterson is tenth in the pcl in ops.

He's up with the big club now....

…since the Holliday trade.

color me unimpressed

He seems to be pretty streaky and hasn’t done much in the majors yet.

Has there ever been a playoff team with a platoon leadoff?
I'm not going to look it up

But Weaver’s Orioles used platoon everything.

Anyway, to think I was a little worried about facing Mike Hampton today? Why I don’t know.

Tomorrow’s task looks alot easier though facing Ortiz, just have to get something decent from Hart.

Offense is FINALLY hitting. Its great to see. Cubs/Cardinals also sneaking up on the Giants/Rockies for the wild card, my guess is that we won’t have to necessarily win the division to make the playoffs.

ok I looked it up

the 83 Orioles did indeed have a leadoff platoon of John Shelby and Al Bumbry.

Thanks, I thought it would be rare.

I’m not opposed to it as the rest of the lineup is now stabilized. (sans soto)

Weaver gets pissed

Best YouTube melt down ever!

Really good game

from what I got to see.

I’d like a repeat tomorrow. :-)

lets go dodgers!
Fun game to watch today.

Wells was fantastic and the hitting was great. Hope they save some runs for tomorrow.

Soriano can do whatever he wants when running the bases after he hits a homerum. Nice to see him hitting again.

Dodgers up on Cards

1-0 in the 6th.

manny just robbed brendan ryan of a 3 run homer

i have gained a small amount of respect for manny

Anyone watching this Cards game

lmao- Manny caught a ball that the announcers thought was a 2 run homer. He then threw it into the stands to start the confusion… Long story short, Dodgers still up 1-0 thanks to an awesome catch by Manny

"You know I used to hate Parkman when he was with the A's...

it’s amazing how a new uniform can change your attitude about a guy…He’s still a dick!"

What movie?

Major league 2
Very good!

I love that line!

I hear

he threw a ball at his kid during a father-son game.

He's got so much nose hair that when

he sneezes it looks like a party favor.

Two items I think are of most importance from baseball today:.

First, our bench was cleared and performed very, very well. This, I think, is critical to our future success and possible playoff run. Lou has shown quite the penchlant to play the old veterans when it is quite clear they need to be given a blow for a few. Our young guys’ successes provide confidence to Lou that they can get the job done.

Second, Cliff Lee to the Phillies. Lee is good. He’s no CC from last year, hell, I don’t even think he’s an ace (I’ll link to his BR-barely above ERA+ 100 numbers when I’m back at the computer), but he makes the World Champs even better, in a divison that totally sucks this year.

Dan

That was the least stressful Cubs game I've ever attended in my entire life

In a luxury suite no less….

You didn't really have to worry today.

The game was essentially over after the first inning.

broxton blows the save
On a broken bat, 2-strike single
to colby "i cant grow a mustache" rasmus no less
but martin guns him down stealing

stop choking dodgers

Yeah, those porno mustaches are . . . not good

Looks like a team full of Jason “Chesty” LaRue

hard to blame that on Broxton. I agree, the WP was the bigger problem.

that stolen base looked like a bad call…too bad

I don't blame Broxton

It was bad luck.

The WP was indeed his own fault.

wild pitch

came back to bite him

Blown save for Broxton.

Game tied.

God fn damn it
I see THEY can hit with RISP

;-)

yeah. LOL.

We were a lowly 2-9 last night BTW. But, we did so much other crap wrong, that I couldn’t harp on it.

Yeah, I was at that one.

First one I’ve seen them lose in several outings.

If you look back at it, it’s amazing that they were still in the game through 7.

Yeah. All he needed was one out
DANGGGGGG ITTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!
This is what happens when you have to rely on others to do your dirty work
Huh?

I thought the Cubs won today.

Absolutely

Even though the Cubs are much improved post-ASG, it’s their own fault that they aren’t 6 games up.

We are still ahead in the loss column.

Just sayin.

Crap I just Kernshaw on my fantasy tean

8 shut out innings and now no win.

sounds like the cubs and dodgers have switched roles atm
If they hadn't loaded the bases, Kershaw might have been able to finish the job
The Dodgers in the top 9th, that is
he was at 110 pitches and served up a meatball to brendan freaking ryan
Paging Carmen Fanzone . . . .

Hi, Jessica.

LOL
Holy crap! It worked!
Bat signal coming up!

Ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne,
BATMAN!

did anyone see Furcal's play on Poo-holes in the 9th?
Really?

2 outs nobody on. I hate that damn team

The end of the White Sox game...

was very amusing. Altough it would be more amusing if that damn red team with those stupid mustaches would stop winning all the time.

did the Sux lose?
Yes...

2nd and 3rd, two out. Kotsay hit an absolute missile to the right fielder. Game over!

sweet.

do they still play in Chicago?

Well,

they’ve won two in a row, but they’ve also won three of their last eight. I wouldn’t call that “winning all the time.”

Perspective, please.

That's true...

But come on Bruce. Two outs, nobody on. That frustrates the heck out of me. And to top it off, it was a broken bat floater for Pete sake!

Yeah, it stinks

But the game isn’t over, and the Cubs have won a few games like that this season, too. Relax.

But the Cardinals have . . . wait for it . . .

DeRosa!

In all seriousness, it was a little disappointing

Even though the season doesn’t hinge on tonight.

and matt holliday!
And they hocked a Lugo
Well maybe...

It will go 65 innings with the Dodgers winning 2-1 and Manny gets the save.

Sounds like

the perfect scenario to me. :)

I so can't cheer for the Dodgers...

I’m just cheering against the DeadBirds.

This is such a dilemma for me, sitting in LA, as a true-blue Cub fan who can’t stand Dodger fans.

Amen brother!

Dodger fans – ‘scuse me, Dodger Stadium attendees – are some of the scummiest around. Brain dead, cheer when they’re told to, zero knowledge of the game and other team, and Hawk-like in their overall obnoxiousness.

they have total venom for Bonds, now treat Manny and his female whore-moans

like the second coming. It is just hard to stomach these clowns

They're not all bad, but you make good points

about the music and the cues as to when to cheer. But the real thing is to stay away from the top deck, the higher the seats means the lower the IQ.

Arrrrrgh come on Dodgers
if we keep playing the way we are capable of

the wildcard is a REAL possibility

why the wild card
safety net****
...for the DeadBirds
Leadoff walk...

Ughhhhh

channelling Heilman
And yes...

I scoreboard watch in July. I do it in April as well.

one more!
left 90 feet away
to the 11th we go
In play out(s)

That nanosecond when you see the thing become blue on gameday does a nice job to raise the tension.

blue always makes my heart skip a beat
Oh, I can help.

Watching on EI

In play no out

for Casey Blake!

Loney singles, Blake to 3rd
1st and 3rd

nobody out…

Come on Dodgers
In play no out

for Loney!!!

Come on L.A.

Remember last year, game 3 at St. Louis. Cubs up by one and Wood gets Pujols to pop out with runners on 1st and 2nd? I was so happy that day. Kerry Wood will always be my favorite player!

Blake lines out to Ryan

1 out

how many times has brendan ryan done that this game
you guys get these runners in.

I need to run to the drug store for my wife. true love. :-)

Martin lines out

still 1st and 3rd…

If you aren't going to read others posting it already

What makes you think we’re reading yours?

Just kidding. I’m tired.

Seems like Blake and Loney are the only ones who can hit
Maybe Franklin can throw one away
Martin is having a bad night
Josh Johnson pitched great today and hit 3 run homer

Why should we care because it means he will NOT face the Cubs in the upcoming series but we do get to face
Ricky Nolesco.

2-1

Dodgerss…barely

Yep, better throw gets him
In play run(s)

Yeah kemp!

Pujols will be coming up in the 11th though :(

On a side note...

During the MLB extra innings free preview I had the pleasure of listening to Vin Scully. Boy, he is outstanding!

how did you get the free preview

i remember last year, comcast showed a whole week of EI for free

It was right after the all-star break

We have Comcast digital cable.

ahhhhh

must have missed it. darn.

he makes watching dodger games bareable
Now just get three outs without allowing a run to cross home
DeRosa, Pujols, Holliday due
2 saviors in the inning?

dodgers are screwed

I'll try to lighten the tension...

The best movies of the 80’s

1) Raiders of the Lost Ark

2) Die Hard

3) Ghostbusters

In the 80's...

There was only one Return and it was not of the King. It was of the Jedi.

wish i could have lived through the 80's
Oh man...

How could I forget Back to the Future? Shame on me.

Marty McFly would like a word with you
And the real Transformers movie

Not this Michael Bay garbage

I love the Die Hard movies
And the batteries are great, too

Who knew a movie spinoff could be so useful

Did you see Die Hard?

Do you remember that part where Bruce Willis walked across glass? That was cool.

That’s twice in one day that I post a Chris Farley SNL moment.

My turn

1) Zelig

3) The Fly

The Empire Strikes Back

kicked off the decade rather nicely as well.

Empire Strikes Back, my friend...
uh oh de ro
I do not like this
Would you like it on a train?

Would you like it on a plane?

i would like it to end
You don't want late rally trend?
i dont have any nails left
I would like it in the Cardinals lose column
That's gonna be tough to rhyme
said Smeagol - no wait, I think it was Gollum
Pujols with a 2-1 count

HUGE swing at the 2-0

line out third

1 out

whhhheeewww
In play out(s)

Please 6-4-3 Holliday.

Holliday with 0-1 count
2-1 count
2-2

just foul down 3B line

3-2

will DeRo be in motion?

foul ball

if he was running, they didn’t say anything

2 outs

you’d think he would be

another foul

Not running

single to left

1st and 3rd

lets go RAMON!!
You realize how pathetic we are ?

Pitch by pitch of a Cardinals game in July ?

Oh what the hell. GO DODGERS.

hell, this goes on in April
We are pathetic

But who cares?

True

but… its baseball and we’re all apparently bored.

Interested.

We’re INTERESTED.

Eh

you can go for interested… i am bored.

Ramon isn't fooling anyone

Soon we’ll just all be sleeping.

ramon backwards is

NOMAR

Isn't that how Nomar got his name?

IIRC, his dad was named Roman and Nomar was a riff on that.

THE SAVIORS ARE GETTING IT DONE, AM I RIGHT
they're all used up, though

luddy can ground into 2

no derosa will steal home

its in his holy blood

time for a dp ludwick i need some sleep
Can the Dodgers ever put them away?
Ludwick singles

Tie game, 1st and 2nd

is this on MLB TV you're all watching it?
I'm watching on Extra Innings (cable)
God

will the cardinals NEVER go away!?!

Sure they will. They are migratory birds, aren't they?
Don't know

but they definitely do more in Oct than we have in … a generation or so.

And they never let us hear the end of it
in the end, it will be the Cubs who will have to teach them good manners

MLB trade rumors says Dodgers going hard for Sherrill

Too late to help them tonight.

shoot, I think I'm gonna say the heck with my budget and subscribe
Wow

Tied again.

Torre

Must have NO confidence in anyone else in the bullpen, batting Troncoso

He pulled the

same move against the Cubs this year too…

They can't put this lineup away

They should have walked the bases loaded.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES

of them tying the game against broxton AND tronosxo. unbelievable

I know

Torre should have let Kershaw try for the CG. They couldn’t solve him.

not a good time for the dodgers to come back down to earth
Nice visual on ESPN today shows all the ex-Pirate players

they’ve traded away who’ve lived long and prospered elsewhere .. from McLouth to ARam .. honestly, is there a franchise in Pittsburgh??

Sure there is

Discount shopping for all the other franchises.

With a beautiful ball park.

One of my friends (a Dodgers fan) went to St. Louis for this series

I have to tell him that he’s bad luck.

uuuugh

come on dodgers…

Inning over
Yah der, eh! Molina almost blooped one in

But Eithier dove and caught it

I swear if Yadier throws the bat and claps his hands agains

I’ll lose my mind.

dont worry, ted lillys here!

that was one of the proudest moments I have ever had as a Cubs fan

it puts a big lump in my throat remembering how completely owned Molina was.

Lord, I love baseball.

it WAS a cool moment

bad it made me miss football. lol

And running up the damn score?
(referring to the Tiller comment someone else made)
and Molina was so shook up by it

that was unbelievable

It was the one game I got to attend last year

and I about lost my mind. He was out but I couldn’t stop proudly proclaiming, “That’s our pitcher!” Plus, during that same game, Fonzie threw a frozen rope to tag out Pujols I believe. Fun game.

Did you actually shout "italic ASCII code!"?

;-)

And my walking Ludwick strategy to load the bases would have won the game

Nice going, Torre.

Maybe Torre will get the message and walk Ludwick next time
Where's Ted Lilly...

When you need him?

Time to pull up gameday

second hand pxp isn’t enough!

now i’m interested, ugh!

I'll take that as a compliment ;-)

How was today, btw?

It was good

Went up and visited the hospital, brought him some tuna cassaroel. :-) He’s moving to the rehab center tomorrow.

excellent

I’ll bet the visits meant a lot

he was happy

and he’s looking good. :-)

The cards mustaches look like knock offs

Joe tiller in his finest days

the cards dodgers game

just went into the 12th inning

Furcal to start the 12th

We may need an overflow

I'm calling

Solo shot for the womens fertility drug user

hope

yer right i called soriano’s grand slam, even though i was just jokin

well.....

@ least of hte cards win the cubs will be tied for the wild card

The Dodgers need to clone Ludwick and put him in their lineup
Henley Ramierz

just made the play Riot tried to make today… on target throws from a SS! Want!

Theriot made a good one last night, though

Solid throw and all

erm...who was running down the line though?
Pudge?
need I say more?
well, he's fast for a catcher ...?

Actually, that had nothing to do with the throw. It was good.

And I"m no Riot apologist.

I'm just poking at the Riot

He’s still my guy.

Blind squirrel and all that

Theriot has gotten much better… but I still don’t like him.

I'm not a big fan, either

and no blind jokes! that’s insensitive! ;-)

don't make me trip you with my cane

lol

get off my lawn!

wait, what?

i trip people

who piss me off.

usually on the bus. although i did it a few times while at the Taste of Chicago last year.

Sometimes the white cane is awesome.

you were serious?

cool.

I am occassionally serious!

don’t act so shocked!

how about appalled?
psst - sarcasm
Please

the first time I suspect you AREN’T sarcastic will be the first.

Somebody tell L.A.

They’re playing the Cubs in the playoffs. In that case, Manny will hit a homer to left on a ball two feet outside.

SLAP IT IN, SON

This is horrible .. rooting for a DODGER

Better dodgers than the mets

i don’t think i could pull that one off.

er .. uh .. you got me there ..
YES YOU COULD

if it meant the Cubs making the playoffs, young lady!

Maybe

but i’d feel dirty the whole time!

Galvan would like that
I don't think he's figured

out who I am or used to be. LOL

Uncle Slappy?

That’s Casey Blake’s new nick. It’s official

Someone sign the Dodgers up for the unclutch award
what?

what did uncle slappy do?

They will have to pick it up at Wrigley

It is left over from June.

How close was the play?
not very
due up are

ryan a pinch hitter and lugo

Ah

I’ll read about the Cards winning tomorrow. I’m tired of watching this.

manny should have pulled a ted lilly
well

if he’d get his over-sized gut into it, he’d pry the ball loose

what they need is Joe Torre Power

is he a mook

or WHAT?

Lou Ferrigno's younger brother?
TORRE SMASH!
you wouldn't like him

when he’s angry

oh man

a guy i used to play trivia with would use “lou ferrigno” as his answer ANY time he got stuck. It was hilarious.

A buddy of mine always used "George C Scott"

until this one time, when the answer was, “George C Scott”

He'd go quiet for a second and then

bust out “LOOOU FERRIGNO!”

Even at the 1000x it was still funny.

Not as funny as George.

I was practically bursting waiting for him to get it wrong. I knew he would.
Dork.

ha!

that is awesome.

i miss trivia night.

What two states . . .

oh, never mind

how much

power does a 60 year old man have?

oh, it's powerful alright ..
Wow

That’s all I can say about that picture.

Why doesn't anyone put on a hit on the catcher anymore?

Make Yadi earn that gold glove.

There was no chance.
How's that?
Molina was so low, all Manny would have done was flip over
Then you get low and put your shoulder into his face.

Hitting catchers is a lost art.

He was practically lying down

he had no chance

he could have

flipped up and dropped the elbow. POW!

Needs more Batman
BIFF! BAM!

Holy dreadlocks, Batman! What a hairy situation!

and that ladies & gentlemen is why the All-Star Game pretty much blows ptooeys these days.

Cardinal fans think of Thurston has their Heilman/Miles/Hoff

And it just got worse for him.

Somewhere Marv Throneberry is laughing
Nope!!

HILAROUS!

Anybody got a copy(tape\dvd\whatever) of of today's game?

I’d love to have one!

O.o

what exactly makes people think he’s any good?

wait penny or hampton
hampton has to be good

he’s LH!

I actually forgot I hated Hampton

Nothing personal but the F(&%^%%%er kept Maddux from getting NINETEEN STRAIGHT GOLD GLOVES. He deserved to go down in flames. How could I ever have let him on one of my fantasy teams.

no idea

Slappy McPopup grounds out to 2B
Darn Fuld is not in the Iowa line up tonight.

I wonder why that could be. I ALWAYS check his in game stats. No fun.

coming up to the majors?
I assume he keeps a bag backed

and a print out of United Express flights from Des Moines to O’Hare handy

Maybe he's on his way up for tomorrow?
You think ?

Yes I have a pretty good idea why he was not in the line up. Hope he stays for a while as my next game at Wrigley is not till Aug 25 .

Weaver on for LA
