On Opening Day, if I had told you that sometime in midsummer, I would see Randy Wells and Mitch Atkins combine on a shutout at Wrigley Field, you probably would have assumed I was talking about the "Road to Wrigley" game that's going to take place on August 9 between Iowa and Las Vegas (note on that page it still says Jake Fox is a "rising star" playing for Iowa -- maybe that needs to be updated).
Instead, Wells, who is making a strong case for NL Rookie of the Year, threw eight shutout innings, allowing just six singles and not permitting a runner past first base until the eighth inning, and Atkins, in his major league debut, threw a scoreless ninth to finish off a 12-0 shutout of the Astros, the Cubs' biggest shutout victory in more than four years, since they blanked the Marlins 14-0 on June 14, 2005, behind a five-hit shutout by Sergio Mitre. 19 outs today were recorded on ground balls and the Cubs turned four double plays behind Wells and Atkins.
I was kind of hoping Wells could keep his pitch count down in the 7th and 8th innings so he could have a shot at a CG shutout -- you don't see many of those any more, and the Cubs' only CG this year is by Sean Marshall in a five-inning, rain-shortened win over the Pirates on May 26. But with Wells at 110 pitches through eight innings and a fresh arm in Atkins in the pen, it was probably wise to get Wells out of there and rest him up for his next start. Wells' ERA, now 2.85, would rank eighth in the league if he had enough innings to qualify. His eight innings today give him 95; the Cubs have played 99 games, so he'd need to throw a CG to qualify after his next start. More likely, it'll take two starts to get him there, but Wells, who with his seventh win now has more than any Cub rookie pitcher in a season since Kerry Wood's 13 in 1998, has been just about the most consistent pitcher the Cubs have had since his recall. He has gone at least six innings in 12 of his 15 starts and has, arguably, had only one really bad start among the 15.
In addition to Wells, the offense came out smoking in the first inning and never stopped.

The Cubs pounded Mike Hampton for five hits and two walks in the first inning; along with a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, the big blow was Alfonso Soriano's three-run homer (I guess Soriano's back on track now, wouldn't you say?) and though Hampton probably would have been yanked early in most circumstances, the Astros' beleaguered bullpen status meant that Hampton had to slog through three more innings, taking one for the team, before he was removed for a pinch-hitter. All told he took 79 pitches to get 12 outs, allowed four walks, eight hits, and nine earned runs, including a second homer by Aramis Ramirez. You know by now if you follow me or ballhawk on Twitter that Ballhawk Ken caught A-Ram's HR on the fly, right near the corner of Waveland & Kenmore. He said "the ball caught me, rather than me catching it", but he is being too modest. I watched the ball all the way into Ken's glove and it was a solid catch, very impressive. He said after the game that he caught one from Khalil Greene last year, but can't remember the last Cub HR he caught on the fly. Just got another tweet from Ken thanking Ballhawk Jeff for tracking down A-Ram's car and getting Aramis to sign the ball for him.
By the middle innings Lou had started to empty his bench; the first to sit was Reed Johnson, who left after fouling a ball off his foot in the first inning. Late radio reports indicate that Johnson has a fractured bone in his foot and may be out a month -- calling Sam Fuld, I suppose, yet another Iowa recall.
After the seventh inning, the bench totally emptied out and more players who spent much time at Iowa wound up in the game, including Jake Fox, who drove in a pair of runs with a sac fly and a single, and Andres Blanco, who hit his first major league home run off the RF foul pole in the 8th. Congratulations to him, and props to the Cubs, who can win this series tomorrow and, if the Dodgers can cooperate by beating the Cardinals tonight, take over first place again later this evening.
Final shout-out to a young couple originally from England, now living in Chicago, who are "just getting into baseball", attending the game with one of their dads (sorry, I never did find out which!) -- welcome to Chicago and the Cubs, you sure saw a special game today.0 recs | 828 comments

Beuller?...Beuller?...Beuller?
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Great game by Wells
How is this a great accomplishment though?
propheteer - July 29, 2009
Should be 8th inning....
carmen_fanzone - July 29, 2009
Ok
I didn’t watch the game, and didn’t realized he limited them until his last inning.
propheteer - July 29, 2009
Crap.
It WAS the 8th inning. I mistyped. I’ll fix the post.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
Gee. I dunno. I've seen some Cubs' pitching staffs over the years where that WOULD have been quite an accomplishment...
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Heilman, Shark, and last year's Howry to name a few!
propheteer - July 29, 2009
I named no names, sir!
But if the glove fits, you must acquit…
Zeke - July 29, 2009
The injuries...oh, the injuries....
Let’s hope Saint Fuld keeps up his magic….
Does that mean Kosuke is full time CF?
carmen_fanzone - July 29, 2009
I suppose
if Fuld is called up to replace Reed, he’ll take Reed’s spot. But… FULD IS A LEFTY! Utto…
drewishdrewid - July 29, 2009
the more the merrier, right?
jesus christos - July 29, 2009
Eh
Won’t see a LHP in either FLA or CIN series… hopefully it won’t really be an issue.
Allie - July 29, 2009
I expect Fuld will get about two starts per week
rotating between LF and CF and come A LOT in the 9th as a defensive replacement.
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009
I'm fine with that!
Zeke - July 29, 2009
We're talking Lou here remember.
Fishbone2 - July 29, 2009
Actually that is largely how Lou did use him
but yes only 3 starts in I think 20 games so maybe one start a week but Lou got over the " not replacing Sori he is a superstar" thing. He used Fuld often in the 9th for both Sori and Bradley. Heck in one of the one run games he had Fuld in left, RJ in center
and Dome in RF in the 9th. It was a thing of beauty, your heart did not pound 200 beats a minute on any fly ball.
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009
True...
That outfield was great for the 9th. You wonder with Sori coming around at the plate if he’ll be as quick to replace him.
Fishbone2 - July 29, 2009
In a ONE run game I think he will do it
( assuming of course the Cubs are LEADING by that run)
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009
You know he's half-Jewish
right?
northernsails - July 29, 2009
Yes
but he just got married in Catholic church so I don’t think he would take offense.
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009
that's ok.
wasn’t his mother’s side anyway ;-)
northernsails - July 29, 2009
This Game couldn't have come at a better time.
Hats off to Wells. Awesome job. Pen is rested, should be go to go for a series win tomorrow!
Fishbone2 - July 29, 2009
great win!
my coworker is a houston fan, i showed him the score in the 8th, noting it was “a close one”…. wow, what a display of great offense and great pitching/defense!!
cubbiefanTN - July 29, 2009
How far away is Wells from becoming eligible for the ERA title?
What’s the required IP’s again?
kanderber - July 29, 2009
Innings Pitched has to equal team games played
I think.
Curtain Jerker - July 29, 2009
So probably in 2 games
Possibly 3
madcow256 - July 29, 2009
95 IP after today
Cubs have played 99 games. He should be eligible after next start.
CubFaninNY - July 29, 2009
Not quite.
Next start will be in game 104. He’d have to throw nine innings. Probably two more starts.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!
My bad.
Thanks, Al
CubFaninNY - July 29, 2009
Way to go Wells!
I had to miss an hour to sit in a dentist’s chair. It was sweet to come out and hear he was still shutting them out.
katie casey - July 29, 2009
Was your appointment at 2:30?
Zeke - July 29, 2009
yes
katie casey - July 29, 2009
Ba-da-BUM. CHING!

What is the difference between Yankee fans and dentists?
One roots for the yanks, and the other yanks for the roots.
katie casey - July 29, 2009
Good one.
Zeke - July 29, 2009
thats a cute one!
i’ll have to remember that
Allie - July 29, 2009
Here's another...
Why did the coach kick Cinderella off the baseball team?
Because she ran away from the ball.
katie casey - July 29, 2009
:-)
That’s cute too.
Allie - July 29, 2009
I thought I was the only one that made that joke.
Guess not. Makes me feel good that I’m not the only one amused by it.
Julio Zuleta's Voodoo - July 29, 2009

Because 7 8 9.
(seven ate nine for those not familiar with this oldy but goodie).
Julio Zuleta's Voodoo - July 29, 2009

Why did the elephant stand on the marshmallow?
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Why?
Allie - July 29, 2009
So he wouldn't fall into the hot chocolate.
Bet you wish you didn’t ask.
katie casey - July 29, 2009
I've never heard that one before

Why did the elephant paint his toe nails red ?
So he could hide himself in the cherry tree.
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009
anybody outside of the organization who the Cubs could grab

IIRC it’s almost full… management might prefer someone that’s already on it.

ROY talk for Wells?
Sorry if this has been discussed to death, but does Wells have a legitimate shot at ROY honors once he qualifies for the ERA title? I’d like to think he would at least be in the discussion.
Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009
I think it's between him and Rasmus at this point...
It’s sad to say, but it’ll probably come down to how many wins Wells has.
kanderber - July 29, 2009
is JA eligable?
jesus christos - July 29, 2009
JA happ i mean
jesus christos - July 29, 2009
Will be by the end of the year.
Fishbone2 - July 29, 2009
Happ
Someone will know for sure, but he may have exceeded innings last year out of the bullpen.
I was glad to see that the Phils didn’t trade J.A. away for Halladay, or include him in the Lee deal. IMHO it will prove to be a wise decision.

Born and raised. Graduate of Hall High School.
One could make a career out of eating/drinking their way through IL. Valley.
Good friends with the Happ family. (I am closer in age to his two older sisters.)
Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009
I remember seeing Happ play
in the Tri-County tournament. Seems like last week. Hall had some great bkb teams back in the day, too — Shawn Jeppson, et al.
Which do you prefer, RIp’s or Lanuti’s?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 29, 2009
Ross Kenseth attends
St. Bede Academy as well.
That’s a nice name for the “famous alumni” collection…kid is going places too.
cubs2k8isnxtyear - July 30, 2009
Jeppson's
one of my good buddies. I played on those teams “back in the day.” You’re making me feel really old, haha.
Have to go with Rip’s. Lanuti’s has great pasta though.
Tangled Up In Blue - July 30, 2009

according to bbref.com

As always I kid , I kid
Doggie Stalker - July 29, 2009

Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009
Jordan Zimmerman(n)
Would he be in the ROY consideration?
Azul Cachorro - July 29, 2009
they probably say he is
but probably not….just because he plays for the Nationals….they tend to look at guys that help out a good team first right?
HardForharden - July 29, 2009
Zimm
Not sure if he would qualify or not, but I tend to agree with HFH. The Cubs and Cards are going to finish with a better record than the Nats regardless of if either make the post season. Can’t see the ROY going to a guy on the worst team in MLB if there are two candidates on winning teams.
Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009
Unless the guy on the bad team...
… is having such a monster year, I’d guess the voters would choose a ROY who helps out a winning team.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
Zimmermann might have been in contention before going on the DL
He’s probably not going to start many more games before the end of the year.
madcow256 - July 29, 2009
Back in the Day
If I recall correctly, Billy Willaims and Kenny Hubbs were consecutive ROYs on some really bad Cubs teams in ’61 & ’62. Both were good and deserving, but neither had what would be considered “monster years.”
sweetswinger - July 29, 2009
Is Clayton Kershaw not a rookie?
burncruisin - July 29, 2009
Dont think so
107 innings last year.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
thanks, right after posting it i looked it up
he made 20 starts so he’s no longer eligible.
burncruisin - July 29, 2009
Postgame interview w/ Koyie Hill...
definately makes me want to root for the guy.
Happy to be there. Happy to be playing. Told Randy Bush, “The way I’m hitting, I’m certainly solidifying my ‘back up catcher’ reputation” and then laughed. Didn’t really care what the team’s record was when he was behind the plate (it’s like 34-19 or something)—gave all the credit to the pitching staff.
Certainly humble and seems like a truly nice guy.
carmen_fanzone - July 29, 2009
I think the pitching staff should give credit to Hill.
From everything I’ve heard he calls a great game, plus plays outstanding defense. We can live with the .200 average right now because everyone else is hitting.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
There are few catchers that have a bat worth caring about.
All I want out of my catcher is good defense, calling a good game, and the ability to sing Z a song when he gets in one of his moods.
cubswynn - July 29, 2009
Can Hill sing to Z in Spanish?
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
How about Lemon Tree? It's a nice song. Trini Lopez as I remember.
That should calm him down.
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Tippy-toe! Tippy-toe!
Uh, Lemon Tree…
Goodie1969 - July 29, 2009
Most of what a good catcher...
…does in invisible to most fans, and I agree Hill should get some kudos.
MPH73 - July 30, 2009
I'm starting to think of Soto as the "backup catcher".
katie casey - July 29, 2009
hmm
I don’t know if we could go that far… :P
HardForharden - July 29, 2009
Len and Bob call him
Iron Man.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
Is his wife's name Pepper?
Zeke - July 29, 2009
I'm really starting to like Randy Wells. He is solid as a rock
every time out and he seems to have that knack of missing the sweet spot of the opponent’s bat. He has that nice smooth motion that seems to be easy on the arm and yet he can throw his fastball consistently in the low to mid 90’s. He is clearly the most consistent pitcher on the staff right now.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 29, 2009
i agree
and Randy said it best when he first came up. he knew he didn’t have the overpowering, nasty stuff so he learned how to pitch with subpar stuff, and clearly, so far, it’s working.
burncruisin - July 29, 2009
2 straight ROY's for cubs???

How interesting
to see Wells today (again I happened to be there at his Sunday night pre-ASG loss), and see what crap our $45MM pitcher gave us last night.
Jeez, Hendry got lucky with this converted catcher! lol
Terrific ass-whooping.
I hope we can do the same to the Cards this year.
The E-Man - July 29, 2009

+1. Ryan's earned it. Just stay off the fence young man!
Zeke - July 29, 2009
How has he earned it?
He hasn’t had control for more than 2 starts this whole season.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
Last year my friend.
WAY above expectations. And with all the issues surrounding his baby, he gets slack this year in my book
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Ah so we should give him a break
because he got in the best shape of his life for a contract year and had an outlier season. Everybody knew he would return to a control issue pitcher that walked too many this season.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
So is your issue with Dempster or Hendry?
Zeke - July 29, 2009
Hendry's fault for the deal
But that doesn’t mean I have to like Dempster. Same reason why half this plate curses Soriano’s and Bradley’s names.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
I cures their NUMBERS.
santoswoodenlegs - July 29, 2009
and I'm cursing Dempster's numbers
nji232 - July 29, 2009
That's NUM3ERS...
Zeke - July 29, 2009
That show
sucks, and so do Dempster’s numbers this season. Last year could have been a fluke.
tripdenten - July 30, 2009
Really? Everybody knew this?
You sound like an ass.
santoswoodenlegs - July 29, 2009
Sounds like?
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 29, 2009
So you expected Dempster to repeat his performance from last season?
nji232 - July 29, 2009
You mean did I expect him to win 18 games? No.
But I also didn’t expect him to break his toe jumping over a railing.
santoswoodenlegs - July 29, 2009
But even healthy he hasn't been close to the same pitcher
and I don’t really think it was reasonable to think he could.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
might have had to do with his daughter
but idk i could be wrong
jesus christos - July 29, 2009
Derrek Lee didn't let his issues interfere with his play
Listen I feel awful about Dempster’s personal situation, and certainly its unfair to expect him to pitch like a Cy Young winner while he is going through that crap.
Still, and this lies with Jim Hendry more than Dempster, shelling out $56 million for a guy who has been mediocre throughout his career because he had one good season isn’t smart.
How many times do GMs have to see a guy magically do better in his contract season and then fall off after cashing in before they wake up? Now we get to watch Dempster go 3-2 on every batter and walk himself into a jam every inning for the next 3.5 years.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
Sounds to me like
Milton Bradley.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
Now you're talking about being reasonable?
santoswoodenlegs - July 29, 2009
Not that Atkins
Didn’t look good, but I don’t see why he was called up over Caridad, Mathes, or even Ascanio.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
Caridad and Mathes aren't on the 40-man roster.
Atkins is probably here only for a cuppa coffee.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
Ascanio?
He looked good when he was up here before, and I never understood why he was sent down in the first place.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
Ascanio could come back for Samardzija any time.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
Another question
If someone on the 40 man gets hurt (ie: Patton, Waddell) can you replace them with someone else for the time they’re on the DL?
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
No.
Al Yellon - July 29, 2009
Did Ascanio get into Lou's doghouse when he was up?
With all the moves in the bullpen the last few days, I was surprised he wasn’t one of them.
Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009

ROY Question
Is Happ from Phillies a rookie? If so, hands down he deserves it more than Wells. If not, he’s making a really strong point. In fact, had he been on the team since April, we would be saying:
1) He’s the best pitcher on the staff
2) He could be in CY Young running.
ak123 - July 29, 2009
He was until about 3 hours ago
Cliff Lee is on board, along with Cole Hamels
Grockcubs - July 29, 2009
Cole is not Cy Young material this year
And Cliff Lee could be in that debate that CC was in last year. Plus Cliff Lee is not as dominate as he was last year.
ak123 - July 29, 2009
that is just so wrong
Cliff Lee has only had one start (since his first two) that is not a quality start and LH batters only have one HR off him. His stuff is stiff nasty. He just has a crappy bullpen behind him—a bunch of Heilmans can make any Cy Young turn into Cy Old. I believe his ERA (after the first two games) is under 2.90, and that is in the AL. Pretty impressive—not 3 loss stuff, but on any other team, this guy would be in the Cy Young conversation.
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
Phillies
With addition of Lee and Pedro the Phillies are going to have a rotation decision to make. Even though J.A. has put up crazy numbers this year, I would guess that he goes into the ’pen based on his success there last year.
Tangled Up In Blue - July 29, 2009
Hamels hasn't been his last year self
But Lee is certainly better.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
And Randy Wells
Would be the best pitcher on the Phillies staff too. Randy Wells could be in the Cy Young running too.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 29, 2009
Agree with this
No reason why Happ deserves it over Wells hands down. Wells had a better ERA over his first 12 starts (which is where Happ sits now). He would have had more wins if the Phillies lineup was batting instead of the Cubs.
madcow256 - July 29, 2009
Or if...
This Cubs offense showed up earlier in the year.
CubsBullsBears - July 29, 2009 via mobile
Right
Wells should have about 3 more wins if the Cubs offense and bullpen hadn’t thwarted some of his early wins.

One of the Jr Ballhawks (Jeff) ran after ARam as he drove down Waveland
Actually, we both ran after him, but I only made it as far as Murphy’s ;-). I handed the ball off to Jeff and he continued the chase. With all the charter buses and other traffic, Jeff caught up with him a few blocks later. Worked out for the best because I’m guessing the odds are better on a kid getting him to sign than a wheezing, gasping old fart…
I did catch up to his car eventually just to thank him, but he was on the phone. I showed him the ball, pointed to him and pantomimed swinging a bat, then pointed to myself and made like I was catching it. He nodded and laughed.

daver - July 30, 2009
And Cliff Lee to the Phiillies ....
I don’t think it’s that great of a deal. The Phillies give up their 2, 3, 4, and 10 prospects for a pitcher that very well could get rocked at CBP. Sure he had a great year last year, I just don’t think he’s an ace pitcher.
lexmarklover - July 29, 2009
Maybe preseason rankings
but the Phils did not give up the guys they wanted to keep in Drabek, Brown and Taylor. It was Drabek that apparently held up the Halladay deal.

This one is going to drive Sori haters nuts.
Post game quote.
‘’If you’re hot and hit a leadoff homer, it’s only one run,‘’ he said. ’’But being hot like now … first at-bat, first pitch, I hit a three-run homer.
’’I’m very comfortable. I don’t have pressure to get on base. Just see the ball and hit it. I like to score a lot of runs, but now I can get a lot of RBIs.’’

madcow256 - July 29, 2009

This is probably the most obvious thing I've seen I the last 20 years
that others including Lou and Sori didn’t. What a shame it took so long to get to this point, but at least we are moving forward with a lineup that can actually do some serious damage.
KaliCub - July 29, 2009
It's all part of Lou's master plan to just barely win the Central Division title and go into the playoffs on a roll
Doesn’t want to risk winning it too early and having a letdown.

KaliCub - July 29, 2009
This quote will also drive the Sori defenders nuts.
Especially the ones who said he’s only comfortable in the leadoff spot, so we should just leave him there, because we won 97 games with Sori batting leadoff.
You all know who you are.
Goodie1969 - July 29, 2009
And they were all sure of themselves too.

KaliCub - July 29, 2009
Good point. I bought into that whole notion.
Consider me foolish. It should have been obvious coming from the same guy who put up a stink about moving to the outfield. Then moving from centerfield. Sorry Sori, I love ya, but your instincts are wrong.
cubswynn - July 29, 2009
He is now officially on the Costanza plan.
“Do the opposite.”
Goodie1969 - July 29, 2009
Why did it all...
…turn out like this for me? I had so much promise. I was personable, I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but … I was perceptive. I always know when someone’s uncomfortable at a party. It became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I’ve ever made, in my entire life, has been wrong. My life is the opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every of life, be it something to wear, something to eat … It’s all been wrong.
cubswynn - July 29, 2009
I'm just hoping he doesn't

Goodie1969 - July 29, 2009
Ha!
Allie - July 29, 2009
And this will feed the Sori haters
who consistently make up the story that he said he needed to bat leadoff. This in spite of the fact that he always said he would do want Piniella wanted. Lou wanted him there.
rlpete - July 29, 2009
these quotes
Of course Soriano is going to say he likes batting 6th now. He probably has old quotes saying he loved batting leadoff.
When teams are winning players will say that whatever is going on at that point is the greatest thing ever.
jeff_pico - July 29, 2009
I understand your point
Saying he prefers leadoff is natural. I bet DLee prefers #3 too. There were also people complaining before last season when DeRosa commented that he preferred a single position but would do whatever Piniella wanted. Personal preference isn’t necessarily bad.
I’m not defendng Soriano in terms of his overall game. Yes, he has holes, big holes. He’s also paid way too much. I just don’t like the constant comments about his selfishness and that he cares for his stats more than the team. He has never shown that. It reminds me of the people that said Jacque Jones was lazy and just wanted his paycheck.
rlpete - July 29, 2009
I'm guilty.
sue369 - July 29, 2009
Soriano would have come out of the slump just the same
If he was batting leadoff. Its over now, he’s down the lineup and we are winning.
nji232 - July 29, 2009
The numbers
were pretty specific. But like I said. As long as it works. It’s not like I’m going to stop being a fan of Soriano because he’s hitting sixth. :D

But Weaver’s Orioles used platoon everything.
Anyway, to think I was a little worried about facing Mike Hampton today? Why I don’t know.
Tomorrow’s task looks alot easier though facing Ortiz, just have to get something decent from Hart.
Offense is FINALLY hitting. Its great to see. Cubs/Cardinals also sneaking up on the Giants/Rockies for the wild card, my guess is that we won’t have to necessarily win the division to make the playoffs.

Two items I think are of most importance from baseball today:.
First, our bench was cleared and performed very, very well. This, I think, is critical to our future success and possible playoff run. Lou has shown quite the penchlant to play the old veterans when it is quite clear they need to be given a blow for a few. Our young guys’ successes provide confidence to Lou that they can get the job done.
Second, Cliff Lee to the Phillies. Lee is good. He’s no CC from last year, hell, I don’t even think he’s an ace (I’ll link to his BR-barely above ERA+ 100 numbers when I’m back at the computer), but he makes the World Champs even better, in a divison that totally sucks this year.

Zeke - July 30, 2009
did anyone see Furcal's play on Poo-holes in the 9th?
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
Really?
2 outs nobody on. I hate that damn team
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
The end of the White Sox game...
was very amusing. Altough it would be more amusing if that damn red team with those stupid mustaches would stop winning all the time.
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
did the Sux lose?
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
Yes...
2nd and 3rd, two out. Kotsay hit an absolute missile to the right fielder. Game over!
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
sweet.
do they still play in Chicago?
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
oh SNAP
CaliCub - July 29, 2009
Well,
they’ve won two in a row, but they’ve also won three of their last eight. I wouldn’t call that “winning all the time.”
Perspective, please.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 29, 2009
That's true...
But come on Bruce. Two outs, nobody on. That frustrates the heck out of me. And to top it off, it was a broken bat floater for Pete sake!
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
luddy was on
jesus christos - July 29, 2009
Yeah, it stinks
But the game isn’t over, and the Cubs have won a few games like that this season, too. Relax.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 29, 2009
But the Cardinals have . . . wait for it . . .
DeRosa!
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
In all seriousness, it was a little disappointing
Even though the season doesn’t hinge on tonight.

Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009

Not Bruce Froemming - July 29, 2009
Well maybe...
It will go 65 innings with the Dodgers winning 2-1 and Manny gets the save.
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
Sounds like
the perfect scenario to me. :)
Not Bruce Froemming - July 29, 2009
Yes sir!
cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
I so can't cheer for the Dodgers...
I’m just cheering against the DeadBirds.
This is such a dilemma for me, sitting in LA, as a true-blue Cub fan who can’t stand Dodger fans.
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
Amen brother!
Dodger fans – ‘scuse me, Dodger Stadium attendees – are some of the scummiest around. Brain dead, cheer when they’re told to, zero knowledge of the game and other team, and Hawk-like in their overall obnoxiousness.
CaliCub - July 29, 2009
they have total venom for Bonds, now treat Manny and his female whore-moans
like the second coming. It is just hard to stomach these clowns
LAcarl519 - July 29, 2009
They're not all bad, but you make good points
about the music and the cues as to when to cheer. But the real thing is to stay away from the top deck, the higher the seats means the lower the IQ.

Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009

jesus christos - July 29, 2009

if he’d get his over-sized gut into it, he’d pry the ball loose
nutdrinkingamp12 - July 29, 2009

ballhawk - July 29, 2009
TORRE SMASH!
drewishdrewid - July 29, 2009
you wouldn't like him
when he’s angry
northernsails - July 29, 2009
oh man
a guy i used to play trivia with would use “lou ferrigno” as his answer ANY time he got stuck. It was hilarious.
Allie - July 29, 2009
A buddy of mine always used "George C Scott"
until this one time, when the answer was, “George C Scott”
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
He'd go quiet for a second and then
bust out “LOOOU FERRIGNO!”
Even at the 1000x it was still funny.
Allie - July 29, 2009
Not as funny as George.
I was practically bursting waiting for him to get it wrong. I knew he would.
Dork.
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009

cubfanwill - July 29, 2009
Why doesn't anyone put on a hit on the catcher anymore?
Make Yadi earn that gold glove.
Mike Martin - July 29, 2009
There was no chance.
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
How's that?
Mike Martin - July 29, 2009
Molina was so low, all Manny would have done was flip over
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
Then you get low and put your shoulder into his face.
Hitting catchers is a lost art.
Mike Martin - July 29, 2009
He was practically lying down
he had no chance
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
he could have
flipped up and dropped the elbow. POW!
drewishdrewid - July 29, 2009
Exactly!
Mike Martin - July 29, 2009
Needs more Batman
Shanghai Badger - July 29, 2009
