I did not know this until I started looking up info on the Marlins for this series, but about three months ago, Dolphin Stadium, where the Marlins play, was renamed "Land Shark Stadium":
Miami, FL – Friday, May 8, 2009: Owner and Managing General Partner of The Miami Dolphins, Stephen M. Ross, and celebrated singer songwriter Jimmy Buffett have today announced that Dolphin Stadium will be renamed Land Shark Stadium. This unique branding will bring Buffett’s Margaritaville and Land Shark themes to enhance the game-day experience for Dolphans.
Today Jimmy will unveil the new lyrics to his iconic song "FINS", written expressly for the team and all Dolphin fans in South Florida. In addition, in recognition of this unprecedented relationship, the stadium will be renamed Land Shark Stadium.
Note, there is not a single mention of the Marlins in that entire press release. I'll bet the Marlins ownership is extremely happy that they will be, at last, getting their own new stadium in 2012. Joe Robbie Pro Player Dolphin Land Shark Stadium is, hands down, the worst stadium for baseball I have ever been to.
That said, let's win this series. The Cubs won two of three in south Florida last year; a repeat would be very welcome.
For those of you who complain about the state of the Cubs' farm system, note that there have been no fewer than seven pitchers who have pitched for the Cubs this year who started the season at Iowa: Randy Wells, Jose Ascanio, Kevin Hart, Jeff Samardzija, Jason Waddell, Jeff Stevens and Mitch Atkins. Most of those pitchers, particularly Wells and the just-traded Hart, have made significant positive contributions. Add to that list position players Jake Fox, Sam Fuld, Andres Blanco and Bobby Scales, and that makes 11 Cub minor leaguers who have helped the major league team win this year. Most of them aren't going to be superstars or even everyday players -- but I don't think you could name another team that's gotten as much help from its minor league system as the Cubs have in 2009.
Lineup via Twittermyer, who also notes that Soriano is just getting a day off because he is hitless vs. Volstad:
Fukudome, cf; Theriot, ss; Lee, 1b; Ramirez, 3b; Bradley, rf; Fox, lf; Fontenot, 3b; Hill, c; Harden, p

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chris Volstad has pitched well in three career starts vs. the Cubs (2.84 ERA) but has three no-decisions to show for them. His last outing vs. the Cubs was April 30 at Wrigley Field, a boxscore you probably don't want to look at. Mike Fontenot is the Cub who has hit him best -- 4-for-8, a HR.
Since the All-Star break Rich Harden has been the guy we got last year -- 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA, 21 strikeouts and two walks in 19 innings. Keep up the good work! Harden also has three starts vs. tonight's opponent, though with a 4.40 ERA; he pitched poorly against the Marlins at Wrigley Field on May 1. Only two Marlins have homered off him: Dan Uggla and Jeremy Hermida.
The Cubs are back to cable-only today, CSN Chicago and FSN Florida. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

interesting
that Fox is suddenly not ineligible to play even though he’s the backup catcher.
Let me get it out of the way — I hate this stadium just like I hate that aircraft hanger in Arizona. Now. Let’s get the Win!
drewishdrewid - July 31, 2009
Never been there
Why does Landshark Stadium suck (other than the dumb name)?
JFCubFan - July 31, 2009
because
it’s ugly and huge and they never fill it up. And, you know. Marlins.
drewishdrewid - July 31, 2009
a whole host of reasons.
1. It’s nowhere near anything and takes forever to get to and from.
2. The weather.
3. It’s a converted football stadium, creating odd seat arrangements.
4. Bright orange seats.
5. The Marlins, for some reason, find it necessary to actively try and insult Cubs fans during their 1 trip there each year.
Bill Potter - July 31, 2009
they show
replays of the Bartman video on their ginormotron, don’t they? The fans have to be told when to cheer, it’s ugly, it’s huge… and, you know. Marlins.
drewishdrewid - July 31, 2009
If I remember someone's post from last year
Every Cubs graphic on the Jumbotron was accompanied by a goat or something like that.
Bill Potter - July 31, 2009
Yep.
Worst place to play baseball in the major leagues. Hope Cub fans drown out the Marlins fans tonight, and all weekend.
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
I don't think it will take much for that to happen.
Bill Potter - July 31, 2009
that was me
same stuff again tonight
in fact they had a fan trivia question where they supposedly “chose” a Cubs fan, he got the question right and his prize was a goat….. a live freaking goat….
DartmouthCubsFan - July 31, 2009
Greetings from BP
Despite living in FLA for most of my life, this is my first time here. Tried to get here for two series in the past, both ended up hurricane-affected.
This place is weird…
Chris Dobbertean - July 31, 2009 via mobile
Anyone there?
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
The ticket seller said this was a "busy" game,
so I couldn’t leave tickets for my friends at will call.
However, the reality is that no one is here and most of those in attendance are in blue.
Chris Dobbertean - July 31, 2009 via mobile
I hate that stadium
its so huge that even when they announce a big crowd you’d swear there was maybe 400 people there.
Allie - July 31, 2009
The weird thing is,
When I walked onto field level to watch BP, it felt smaller than I thought it would. We’ll see how the seats upstairs are.
Chris Dobbertean - July 31, 2009 via mobile
The upper deck is actually open?
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
That is weird, poor, customer service.
I’ve never heard of a stadium not allowing you to drop off tickets at will call for friends.
false cognate - July 31, 2009
And...
In my short time here, I’ve yet to see any of the place’s namesake beer.
Chris Dobbertean - July 31, 2009 via mobile
its a football stadium
not a baseball one by any means
dariot2 - July 31, 2009
TURQUOISE AND ORANGE
are gross
ndcubs - July 31, 2009
True, and a pretty good place to watch a football game at that...
The Blögmeister and I will never agree on this, but I’d put LandShark as third worst, behind the Metrodome and Oakland. ( I haven’t been to the Trop yet for comparison.)
The Metrodome is just goofy, and it sucks the life right out of you. Oakland has the same crummy sightlines as in Miami, but it’s mostly decrepit and gross, while at least Miami is modern.
Somewhere, I have a picture of my (then) 5 year old son in Oakland having to stand on a bucket just to pee—because every single potty a kid could use, was cordoned off with police tape, flooded, or filled with puke. Of course, it was one of the buckets they were using to catch overflow from the leaky sinks, so that created a new set of issues.
bison - July 31, 2009
The Coliseum is pretty bad.
It’s so crappy that it almost has it’s own charm (and at least it’s cheap for tickets). I still had a good time though.
As for sight-lines…Last time I was there, I couldn’t see either the centerfielder or the left fielder unless they were making a play in the shallows.
CubsWin!Oregon - July 31, 2009
I was under the impression they named it that for Landshark Beer...
Based in Tampa. Is that wrong or am I thinking of another stadium?
Sandberg's evil twin - July 31, 2009
Ya..
Land Shark Beer is Jimmy Buffett’s lager. Interestingly though, the deal doesn’t include calling it ‘Land Shark Stadium’ for the Super Bowl, which is in Miami next season. News story link
dtc0405 - July 31, 2009
Thanks dtc...Didn't know it was his beer.
I always liked Landshark, it’s tasty (though expensive) once in awhile. Pretty cool to read that link, appreciate you posting it.
Sandberg's evil twin - July 31, 2009
However, Jimmy Buffett
is a Cubs fan…but business is business…..
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 31, 2009
I am not sure what I would do if they renamed Wrigley,
Land Shark Stadium
dtc0405 - July 31, 2009
If it got us a World Series
I’m sure I’d accept it.
Allie - July 31, 2009
and that big convention center in Wisconsin.
ballhawk - July 31, 2009
What's wrong with Miller Park?
It’s OK by me.
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
When the roof is closed, it's like being in a freakin' convention center
the acoustics are all wrong, the lighting is weird, and there’s this white noise buzz. I go out in the concourse and I’m expecting someone to demo some software or show me a new car. Or at least give me a free t-shirt…
ballhawk - July 31, 2009
Yeah, but that stuff goes on in every new park.
When the roof is open it’s quite nice. And at least you know when you’re going there that they’ll play and you won’t freeze to death.
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
I enjoy Miller Park
I was there on April evening for a Cubs/Brewersw game a few years ago, where I was incredibly happy for the roof.
Madison Cub Fan - July 31, 2009
+1.
Was there Easter night and was VERY happy the roof was closed for the ESPN Sunday night game (just prior to the home opener).
Zeke - July 31, 2009
Ozzie?
tony412 - July 31, 2009
pfff
we don’t need Fox in the lineup anyway.
Your words

I am shocked.

I would like to have seen him in there too.

He's hot as well.
lexmarklover - July 31, 2009
he doesnt have a hit against volstad
jesus christos - July 31, 2009
Fox is playing.
lexmarklover - July 31, 2009
He was passed over?
KaliCub - July 31, 2009

WanderingWanderer - July 31, 2009
Start this road trip on the right foot.
Bill Potter - July 31, 2009
darnit
now, I was going to start on the left foot, but then you said right foot, so I tried to stutter step and I tripped and oh, the humanity…
drewishdrewid - July 31, 2009
who starts on the left foot?
there’s your first problem.
Bill Potter - July 31, 2009
Left footers
Lou’s demanding more of them… …gosh darn the trade deadline.

Nothing breeds excitement
for the fans like naming your stadium after an old (admittedly somewhat funny) Saturday Night Live bit.

carmen_fanzone - July 31, 2009
So is Michael Wuertz.
Al Yellon - July 31, 2009
What About Eckersley?
He’s a HoF’er who wore 43 for the Cubs. Uh, okay, he was better known as a starter for the Red Sox and a closer with the A’s. I really don’t think Eck cares about #43 for the Cubs.
memphiscub - July 31, 2009
Maybe Grabow wanted a fresh start
kinda like what Fisk did when he changed Sox (27 —> 72).
Or maybe he knows about BCB and decided to ONEDEC himself before we did
ballhawk - July 31, 2009
Or maybe he was told he couldn't have 34.
We’ll probably never know.

Madison Cub Fan - July 31, 2009
Indeed
Who does he think he is marrying his HS girlfriend, who was a star college athlete and now likely makes more money than he does working in finance when I was available ?
Ok I kid but I do really like him AS A PLAYER. Stuff like great defense and great patience at the plate is not valued as highly as it should be especially on the Cubs.
Doggie Stalker - July 31, 2009
The fact that you know all this about him........
might scare the wife a bit :)
Madison Cub Fan - July 31, 2009
Oh just general stuff on the web
Weird thing is I stumbled on one place where you kind out with they registered for the wedding gifts ( not details though). Honestly I don’t do the really silly stuff but I find his academic background very refreshing for a baseball player. Anyway I never tried to meet Maddux so I certainly would never bother Fuld. I knew some actual groupies years ago and it is just really scary and sick to me. If Sam can keep his average over .300 , steal some bases and flash the leather I will ogle from afar.

Theriot, if one is to understand the great game, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the scrappy. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the game. Be careful of singles, Theriot. Only through me can you achieve power greater than any Cubby. Learn to hit the ball for power to the other side of the park and you will be able to save your career from certain death.

kinda OT: Gorzelanny expected to start Tuesday
According to muskat blog, here is linky

That link says...
… he “could” start Tuesday, not “expected” to.
However, I think she’s right. They’ll keep Stevens or Samardzija around till then for an extra arm, then recall Gorzelanny.

8yr deal he signed with the Cards in before '03
so his contract is only through 2010.
dtc0405 - July 31, 2009

Encarnacion was getting like 7.5 million a year and he wasn’t playing well.

Goodie1969 - July 31, 2009
Is she lefty?
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
but nothing this year
so it’s more like getting him for 7.5million a year.
shake n bake - July 31, 2009
That's $11M Canadian
Zeke - July 31, 2009
That's FAR from mammoth...
Rolen is having a very good season. If he continues this production, 11M will be a pretty good deal for the Reds.
kanderber - July 31, 2009
But why do they need him?
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
It is bizaare...I thought they would be rebuilding for next season for sure.
I read the SBNation Reds blog during the games they lost to us last series and most of the fans there had already given up on the team. I saw a lot of posts saying BLOW IT UP!…never would have expected them to pay for an expensive veteran with not much left…that’s for a team that is wanting to improve their chances in the playoffs, not trying to get there. Very odd. They sure are a lot more optimistic than other clubs to pay him 11 mill next year. I don’t like seeing anyone injured, but I think they will regret this move for sure. Even healthy I can’t see him performing worth anything close to that. That’s our move Cincy…didn’t you know?

It sure was funny, reading all these blockbuster trades, some very good players there...
Then reading the Yankees got Hairston. I had to check it twice…can’t understand what exactly they needed to want him. At least it gave me a good laugh, I needed it after seeing all the talent going to the other contenders. I don’t know that any of these trades could have been made by the Cubs, if we would want to give up Vitters and other players to get them, but it sure makes me sick seeing so many teams in a better position now.

I haven't had a good day
I puked in the car, and have a terrible headache. A win can fix it all. Go Cubs!!
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
hope you feel better soon
katie casey - July 31, 2009
Thanks
I feel a lot better now. Cleaning up the car wasn’t fun though.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
Oh no!
feel better… and stay out of my car!
Allie - July 31, 2009
This made me laugh, not only did it sound funny with him puking...
Seemed pretty ironic seeing the dog picture talking to the man…stay out of my car boy! no more puking ….I told you not to eat that grass I don’t care how your tummy felt…
Sandberg's evil twin - July 31, 2009
LOL
Ginger wouldn’t be worried about the car.. she’d just be going “i’ve got a ball… would that help you?”
Allie - July 31, 2009
That's cute...a nice gesture...
by the way, does Ginger ever sit with you while you watch the Cubbies?
Sandberg's evil twin - July 31, 2009
Sometimes
She loves to sleep under my feet while I’m at the computer.
She’s a blast.
Allie - July 31, 2009
Random pukage?
Hmmm…better make an appointment with your friendly neighborhood OB-GYN.
CaliCub - July 31, 2009
Why are guys like Fox and Cotts
Who are likely done for the year still on the 40 man roster?
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
You don't have to move guys to the 60 day
DL until the 40 man is full.
Why not leave them there until you have to make a decision?
Allie - July 31, 2009
The White Sox got Jake Peavy.
They just announced it on CTL.
sue369 - July 31, 2009
Thought Peavy didn't want to play for the WS
JFCubFan - July 31, 2009
He apparently felt that since the Cubs and Dodgers wouldn't trade for him
he would give it a go on the Southside, just to get out of San Diego, I would guess.
dtc0405 - July 31, 2009
Never mind.
I just saw the fan shot about it.
sue369 - July 31, 2009
Stupid trade in my opinion
His road ERA has been discussed here enough, I shouldn’t need to say it. Plus he won’t be pitching for awhile, and their rotation stinks for that while since Richard is gone. They also lost their no. 2 prospect.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
I don't think it will put them over the top or perhaps change this season much.
But I’d take him any day, depending on what you give up for him. I’d like him pitching for me next year or any year, whatever his road ERA is. I don’t know much about his health though…that would be my only concern.
Sandberg's evil twin - July 31, 2009
That's what hurts
It weakens the Sox rotation until Peavy comes back, plus they lose their no 2 prospect.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
Eh
I’m just glad PV finally got traded and that he’s not in the NL anymore.
That helps us, I think.
Allie - July 31, 2009
Al, thanks for sticking up for the Cubs farm system and ex-Lugnuts everywhere in the majors...
…and upper minors…
Well, you didn’t really but I think the farm system gets a bad rap.
Zeke - July 31, 2009
LOL
Tommarow is Victor Martinez bobblehead night in cleveland.
wrigleyrocker12 - July 31, 2009
It's a GREAT bobblehead. I want one!
Zeke - July 31, 2009
This is wierd
Curtis Granderson is listed in the Tigers pitching stats , yet it says he hasn’t faced a batter.
