Rich Hill was horrible that day and got down 5-0 early. Cubs chipped away and were down 5-3 going into the 9th. After a run off of Cordero, Aramis Ramirez jacked a hanging slider for the walkoff 6-5 win.
you have to figure Harden could fetch a decent return, even with his struggles. I bet someone would overpay for him. Marshall can fill in in the rotation adequately.
Had absolutely no intent to try and score. He dogged it the entire time. He dogged it out the box on the error as well. Had he even tried running halfheartedly out of the box, he would have been standing at third.
but when you’re trying to win ballgames, keep above .500, knock a division rival down a peg, and advance closer to first place, you manage to win, not placate your superstars.
Soriano gets his money regardless, and I have no doubt he’ll eventually help us win games again with his bat. But he has been really really bad as of late, the team did great with Fuld leading off, Fuld’s a far superior defender, and was getting on base.
It’s a no-brainer, Fuld should be in the starting lineup today. Period.
You can also make the argument that his knee is still bothering him.
Or the argument that letting him play when he’s in this prolonged of a slump may hurt his mental state more than giving him a few days off to sit on the bench and clear his head. I’m not sure what the answer is…but in the mean time, I’d rather be winning.
Lou was playing him after the reports came out of his knee hurting, we could see him limping while rounding bases and in the field. So that debunks—for me—the thought of Lout not playing him if he had some nagging injury, however mild it might be.
He sat for two days, came back, looked poor, and is playing again. Maybe it’s not enough time on the bench, or something to that effect. Either way, losing isn’t going to help team morale, or his morale, unless he’s a selfish player. By all accounts, he’s not selfish.
It won’t happen; I’d just prefer Lou to have played the “hot hand” in Fuld.
Can't wait for Drew to spin another Soriano failure
He loves Soriano. That’s what happens when a guy is going bad – the big AB just find you. If I were Hendry and Pinella I think its time to cut losses with Harden and stick Marshall in his spot. It’s basically the all star break and Harden’s ERA is over 5. That won’t cut it.
but the brewers have some impressive individuals – fielder, braun, gallardo and good complementary offensive players. and their bullpen, for once, doesn’t suck
the brewers’ lineup is much better than the cardinals. this might be the best lineup in the league. the cardinals have pujols, rasmus, and then a bunch of mediocre players. cards have a better staff, but it seems really rickety as well.
I was thinking about this the other day. Let’s say you combined the Cards and the Brewers into one team. We’ll call them the “St. Louis Suds”. You’d pretty much have the perfect team. Consider:
OF: Braun, Cameron, Colby Rasums
3B: Pujols (he has to move, and I think he’s more athletic than Fielder)
SS: Hardy
2B: Schumaker
1B: Fielder
C: Molina
I think Cameron nails him. He charged the ball and has a good arm. Plus, you don’t expect your #2 hitter to hit into a DP do you? Gee, thanks Riot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not wasting my time watching this atrocity any more – different day, same song. The last two pitchers yesterday and today for the Brewers are horrible and we’ve got 2 runs in 12 innings. Absolutely pathetic. Quade should be fired for that hold, he knows this team can’t hit for crap with RISP
was catchable. He missed it by a foot, but was tripping over his feet and misjudging it the whole way. 95% of left fielders get that one (Sori and Manny being the exceptions)
made a nice attempt on a ball at the wall. He didn’t come up with it, but it would have been a highlight reel catch if he did. Soriano just looked ridiculous.
Soriano missed the play. I’ve said it three or four times now. that’s ONE run. Harden gave up HOME RUNS. You gonna blame Soriano for not catching a ball up in the bleachers?
that the anger is at the PATTERN of suckitude that is Soriano. People are obviously mad at Harden, but Soriano is an absolute mess right now. Just freaking admit it.
going back to last inning (bottom 2nd) I'd really like to see a squeeze
and/or double steal attempt once in a while, in such games, just to make opposing teams
guess once in a while and besides it couldnt turn out much worse than it does now w/RISP, could it?
why are the cubs sacrificing so much to keep this guy? not being snarky, i just don’t know. is he such a good prospect that they will essentially play with a 24 man roster all eyar in win-now mode just to keep him.

why else was he only on 2nd on the error, and standing at third on an obvious two out hit
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
Could be
but didnt look like it though. Really tough inning there.
Ryanocm1 - July 4, 2009

Goodie1969 - July 4, 2009
not helping sori case to stay in the lineup or on the team.....
that has to be one of the worst contacts ever signed
deployedcubfan - July 4, 2009
THE worst player in MLB right now
plenz - July 4, 2009
well, he's given us to pretty solid years.
they might not be superstar years or quite worth the money, but still he’s been pretty good. for the last two months or so, he’s completely vanished.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
mr problem with him is
that he has performed under his contract during those 2 halfway decent seasons……..he’s abysmal this year and what in the hell happens over the next 5?
IMO……3 years from now he is completely out of baseball
plenz - July 4, 2009
Soriano
was exactly the kind of player Cubs fans were screaming for. Without him, we don’t contend in 2007 or 2008.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Yea he is plain terrible now tho..I sure hope he is not the next Andrew Jones
cubbiepride - July 4, 2009
For Looper
21 pitches, just 9 strikes. I don’t even want to see how many harden threw
cubsforever - July 4, 2009
But the sooner he's out, the sooner we get to see Patton...
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
I hope they let him throw two or three innings. Lou always wastes the pen with his one-inning relief stints.
cubsforever - July 4, 2009
How difficult would it have been to put Fuld in CF hitting lead-off and Fukudome in RF for Bradley?
Or Fuld in LF for Soriano?
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
Look, Lou has all the confidence in the world in Soriano. What can he do?
LOL
cubsforever - July 4, 2009
soriano is getting paid too much money to not be put in the lineup when healthy
aznsensation - July 4, 2009
What's worse
Paying Soriano to suck and lose games?
Paying Soriano to sit on a bench and potentially win games?
The money argument gets old after a while.
Danwood - July 4, 2009
That makes sense in theory
but when you’re trying to win ballgames, keep above .500, knock a division rival down a peg, and advance closer to first place, you manage to win, not placate your superstars.
Period.
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
except
benching Soriano doesn’t help him hit, if, in fact, he is healthy.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
You can make that argument
You can also make the argument that his knee is still bothering him.
Or the argument that letting him play when he’s in this prolonged of a slump may hurt his mental state more than giving him a few days off to sit on the bench and clear his head. I’m not sure what the answer is…but in the mean time, I’d rather be winning.
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
as I've said before
I have to believe that he’s healthy, or Lou wouldn’t be playing him.
He had a few days off to sit the bench. He has to play to hit.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Disagree
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
does it really matter you can pretty much find anyone in the league
to play lf and bat .225. and play marginal left field
deployedcubfan - July 4, 2009
True
Which is why I’d rather get a look at one of our better ML-ready OF prospects…especially when he was doing his job

Cubz24 - July 4, 2009
Can't wait for Drew to spin another Soriano failure
He loves Soriano. That’s what happens when a guy is going bad – the big AB just find you. If I were Hendry and Pinella I think its time to cut losses with Harden and stick Marshall in his spot. It’s basically the all star break and Harden’s ERA is over 5. That won’t cut it.
BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009
there is absolutely NO defense for Soriano right now

Of course the game was sunk when Pinella trotted out that ridiculous lineup.
BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009

Time to get him out of rotation and put in someone that can actually not destroy our bullpen every time. Calling Sean Marshall.

They’ll throw Patten… then he’ll get “hurt” and have to go on the DL for two months, thus solving one of the major problems with the roster.

Pattons aproblem?
maybe……..but isn’t having a bum in LF for 5………..countem……..5 more years a HUGE long term roster problem??
plenz - July 4, 2009

Question
Do you burn out the bullpen, or let Harden just take one for the team regardless of score?
cubfred - July 4, 2009
it's already a blowout.
you let him pitch.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
Unless
the Cubs start scoring runs
Hilary Lee - July 4, 2009
Harden is almost at 50 pitches
At that rate, he’ll get pulled in the 4th as it is, so this one is on the bullpen no matter what.
Danwood - July 4, 2009
What's sad is that there is nothing particularly impressive about the Brewers
Other than Fielder. The Cardinals are far more formidable. Losing this division to the Brewers would be a joke
BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009
by cardinals you mean pujols and 24 other guys right

propheteer - July 4, 2009
hoffman is good

BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009
i disagree.
the brewers’ lineup is much better than the cardinals. this might be the best lineup in the league. the cardinals have pujols, rasmus, and then a bunch of mediocre players. cards have a better staff, but it seems really rickety as well.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
best lineup in the league?
Counsell, McGahee, Cameron, Kendall. Are you for real. The lineup is terrible
BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009
You know
I was thinking about this the other day.
1B: Fielder
C: Molina
SP: Gallardo, Carpenter, Lohse, Wainwright, Bush
RP: Hoffman, Franklin, Motte, Coffee….
Hilary Lee - July 4, 2009
And that doesn't even touch on the bench you'd have
w/ Ludwick, Ankiel, McGehee, Counsell, Gamel…

carmen_fanzone - July 4, 2009
Thanks for the great effort, Richie!
Itchy - July 4, 2009
Anyone know what his ERA is up to now?
Danwood - July 4, 2009
above 5
cubsforever - July 4, 2009
well lets go for the series win tomorrow!
jesus christos - July 4, 2009
Bradley
made a nice attempt on a ball at the wall. He didn’t come up with it, but it would have been a highlight reel catch if he did. Soriano just looked ridiculous.
tomas21 - July 4, 2009
Soriano will
out of baseball in 2-3 years
plenz - July 4, 2009
I hope and pray that is true
Itchy - July 4, 2009
Dream on
Nobody will ever eat that contract with 3-4 years left on it by then.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
Not even at the halfway point on his contract.
propheteer - July 4, 2009
hw will become SO bad
that he will be DFA’s at some point and the Cubs will pay him to sit in the Dominican republic and laugh all the way to the bank
plenz - July 4, 2009
ridiculous.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
he's already close to that bad.....why is that ridiculous
plenz - July 4, 2009
because it's a lot of money.
miles will be out of baseball in short order; soriano will be what we call an albatross.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
An albatross with an elephant on its back
propheteer - July 4, 2009
yeah right,
he’ll be killing us long after that.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
The Cubs are spitting on the flag!
by playing this way on July 4
Worf - July 4, 2009
That's what we get for starting a Canadian today...
Harden should have started on July 1, Canada day. Today’s starter obviously should have been all-American boy Ted Lilly.
Ross - July 4, 2009
his defense makes up for...
check that.
can you imagine how the crowd will greet Fonzi next time up? the man is in a total funk.
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
Drew, you seem awfully quiet about Soriano
You’ve done nothing but sunshine pump his arse for a month.
BeltwayCubsFan - July 4, 2009
He's blaming Harden
obviously, it’s the pitchers fault that Soriano can’t bunny-hop on every catch
Worf - July 4, 2009
Thought you were leaving?
carmen_fanzone - July 4, 2009
I thought
you were leaving?
Soriano missed the play. I’ve said it three or four times now. that’s ONE run. Harden gave up HOME RUNS. You gonna blame Soriano for not catching a ball up in the bleachers?
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
you either don't understand, or refuse to admit
that the anger is at the PATTERN of suckitude that is Soriano. People are obviously mad at Harden, but Soriano is an absolute mess right now. Just freaking admit it.
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
I've said
several times he’s not playing to potential.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Bottom Line
Today was a chance to really make a statement and set up a potential sweep.
The team is playing to form. .500.
Ryanocm1 - July 4, 2009
well, we're just about done.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
Cameron
out at third on a ball hit in front of him.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Dumb play
by Cameron. Never go to third on a ball hit like that.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
with a 7 run lead, why not?
JFCubFan - July 4, 2009
Because you can have an 8-run lead.
Watching enough games at Wrigley, no lead is safe. Never take your foot off the gas.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
Wow, so we aren't the only team that makes horribly stupid baserunning plays like that?
Cameron out 6-5
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
Well
we can still take 3 out of 4. And Soriano has looked ridiculous enough that maybe he’ll sit for another couple days or go on a short DL stint.
tomas21 - July 4, 2009
Over? Nothing is over until we decide it is.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Rich Harden?
ChipSet - July 4, 2009
some heads up defense + bone head running = moJo changing
I’m looking for anything
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
Hopefully Looper continues to look shaky
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Runner goes
tapper back to the mound. Two outs, Hart safe at second.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Grounder up the middle
three outs. 7-0 Suds, 1 LOB.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Patton and Theriot pick up the pieces
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Sigh
Why do I have to be in Wisconsin while watching this? I feel dirty.
Hilary Lee - July 4, 2009
Can we continue to afford running
Rich Harden out there?
How is it that a guy who has dominated when healthy suddenly comes to us and it takes less than 20 starts fo him to suck thoroughly and completly.
Ryanocm1 - July 4, 2009
he dominated his last start
so yes
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
Cause the Cubs are truly cursed
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Post of the Year
LT - July 4, 2009
I know it's lame but no other explanation
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Harden
has to be out there……this team has way more problems than him
plenz - July 4, 2009
He's like 24...right?
I wouldn’t call him a veteran
preachermancubsfan - July 4, 2009
ask milton bradley.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
i will say this,
if harden continues to suck this bad, his free agent price has to go way down. i wonder if we sign him.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
going back to last inning (bottom 2nd) I'd really like to see a squeeze
and/or double steal attempt once in a while, in such games, just to make opposing teams
guess once in a while and besides it couldnt turn out much worse than it does now w/RISP, could it?
CubfaninRaleigh(869milestoWrigley) - July 4, 2009
let's hope the first three guys get on again so Fonzi can
come up with the bases loaded again.
even before his slump he had horrible production in that situation in his career
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
And David Patton makes them look like little leaguers...
3 very quick grounders…
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
you dont mess with the general
jesus christos - July 4, 2009
maybe it was meant to get Patton a win on July 4th
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
Let's strand 3 more!
All The Way - July 4, 2009
Is Erik Estrada...
going to try to sell us all timeshares on Monday night?
Chris Dobbertean - July 4, 2009
I believe it is swampland zoned for timeshares
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
Rain?????????
Oh please. How about a monsoon? The game is not official yet.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
Lee
cracks a base-hit to center. Leadoff single.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
+ 1
plenz - July 4, 2009
This is a key inning
Looper can be hit…If the team can put up 2+ in this inning, I’ll be confident that they have a chance. If not, not so much
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
lead off single
we are hitting Looper just cant get the job done…again.
Ryanocm1 - July 4, 2009
There are no outs.
What do you mean “again”?
Goodie1969 - July 4, 2009
Let's go Milton
Pre - July 4, 2009
three more singles and we score
Clutche - July 4, 2009
+1
Ryanocm1 - July 4, 2009
Provided no one hits into a double play first.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
How about a walk to Bradley
and HR for Fox
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
Time for some clutch hitting
Looper can be had
LT - July 4, 2009
MB
must have heard me
LT - July 4, 2009
hr
plenz - July 4, 2009
drives one
HOME RUN MILTON BRADLEY! CLUTCH HITTING RIGHT THERE, BABY!
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
GAMEBOARD!
carmen_fanzone - July 4, 2009
Nice Bradley!
It’s only been like two months.
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Seriously??
Cheer him…he just hit a hr…
Gomer
preachermancubsfan - July 4, 2009
Gomer?
I did, but until his numbers reach a decent level, he’s glutton for punishment.
propheteer - July 4, 2009
I feel sorry for the guy...
He’s actually trying…he wants to do good
preachermancubsfan - July 4, 2009
I like him too
but he needs to continue to do what he just did and not worry about what’s out of his control. I.e. umps, fans, etc.
propheteer - July 4, 2009
WOO from the left side!
All The Way - July 4, 2009
MILTON!
Pre - July 4, 2009
MB puts us ON THE BOARD
Emelie - July 4, 2009
MB!!!!!
HR!!!!
As a lefty no less…
Chris Dobbertean - July 4, 2009
only took bradley a month and then some for a home run
woooo
jesus christos - July 4, 2009
That Soriano guy
has been sitting on 14hrs for god knows how long hah
All The Way - July 4, 2009
CHEERS FOR MILTY!!!!!!!!
CubfaninRaleigh(869milestoWrigley) - July 4, 2009
closing in on 20 RBIs!
I predict he will do it by the end of
a) this series
b) this homestand
c) this month
d) this season
LAcarl519 - July 4, 2009
i wouldn't call that clutch
I’d call it, “ABOUT TIME”
VegasCubFan - July 4, 2009
Crushed that one....
carmen_fanzone - July 4, 2009
Fox
to the plate. pops it up left side, Fielder can’t make the play.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
foul ball
by the way. :D
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Bradley
is the best player on the Cubs. Keep him in the cleanup spot
LT - July 4, 2009
huh?
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
makes about as much sense as the
get rid of MB posts huh
LT - July 4, 2009
except that the get rid of MB posts
are based on two+ months of bad baseball, while you’re basing yours on one at-bat
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
actually
I am basing mine on his whole career. My sample size is bigger than yours.
LT - July 4, 2009
MB to his doubters:
Suck on that!
Goodie1969 - July 4, 2009
Less than 20 RBIs on July 4th
suck on that!
propheteer - July 4, 2009
I'll check back in at season's end for his totals.
In the meantime, he just plated two runs and you’re complaining about him. At least he’s not an automatic out like our LF.
Goodie1969 - July 4, 2009
Agreed
I’m just poking a little fun at him. We’re allowed to do that as fans, right?
propheteer - July 4, 2009
Now if Soriano can get one everything will be sunshine and puppies
shake n bake - July 4, 2009
and rainbows & butterflies.
VegasCubFan - July 4, 2009
one homerun won't change my opinion
Clutche - July 4, 2009
no, of course not.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
why would it?
you are one of the guys who screams “small sample size” more than anyone else.
WanderingWanderer - July 4, 2009
so reaching on an error won't do it?
shake n bake - July 4, 2009
BRADLEY BRAD
All The Way - July 4, 2009
Fielder Running
makes me laugh
ccav23 - July 4, 2009
Cut him some slack
He just got back from the hotdog eating contest on Coney Island
Danwood - July 4, 2009
Well,
That’s some progress
Hilary Lee - July 4, 2009
Fox
bounces it to short. One out.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
nice.
buckmulligan - July 4, 2009
Soriano
to the plate.
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
We need to put at least 1 more on the board
not gonna happen that way. fox out 6-3
Ryjo - July 4, 2009
lol: Len & Bob "The gatorade machine resting comfortably in Maui...
serving pina coladas and margaritas.
Emelie - July 4, 2009
He was
Traded for two jugs and a stack of cups. Tsk tsk. I think they could have gotten more. Maybe a cooler?
Hilary Lee - July 4, 2009
not one of Hendry's better deals.
VegasCubFan - July 4, 2009
Bob: "he's a free swinger who'll occasionally swing as some bad pitches"
Oh Bob, so politically correct…
Danwood - July 4, 2009
I believe that is called
“sugar-coating”
VegasCubFan - July 4, 2009
Pat noted after 1st inning that the "good thing"
About being down so much early, is that you have lots of time to get back in the game. :P
CubfaninRaleigh(869milestoWrigley) - July 4, 2009
Soriano
grounds to third. The throw is high off the glove of Fielder! Soriano is safe!
drewishdrewid - July 4, 2009
Soriano's biggest contribution in about 10 days, sadly
elgato - July 4, 2009
soriano grounds to 3rd but fielder cant make the catch
jesus christos - July 4, 2009
Oh darn..
McGehee made an error…
Chris Dobbertean - July 4, 2009
McGeeeeeehheeeee with another error

All The Way - July 4, 2009
Fielder
really makes you appreciate Derek Lee at first. Rule #1 for a firstbasemen, catch the ball.
cubfred - July 4, 2009
another GIDP
JFCubFan - July 4, 2009
why was theriot in
with first base open?
tomas21 - July 4, 2009
question about patton
why are the cubs sacrificing so much to keep this guy? not being snarky, i just don’t know. is he such a good prospect that they will essentially play with a 24 man roster all eyar in win-now mode just to keep him.
