Forgive me if this is a dumb question...

…but why would the Royals trade for Freel when they could’ve just claimed him off waivers when the Cubs DFA’d him? Or am I missing some quirk in the rules here?

Apparently they wanted to make sure they were the ones to get him. But don’t they realize: Freel is more of a National Leaguer! At least according to him.

When a player goes through waivers

the right to claim the player goes worst record to best record IN YOUR LEAGUE, followed by worst to best in the other league. So the Royals would not have been able to get Freel unless ALL NL teams passed on him, then would have been after SEA, BAL, and DET.

So they were probably just wanting to make sure that they got him since they would have been 20th in line out of 30 teams.

I think that I screwed that up a little. It is current record during the year I believe, not last year’s record. So KC would have been after all NL teams and behind CLE and OAK as well. Sorry for the mix-up. I was still thinking off-season wavier positions…

either way (although you should know the basic player movement rules), this is a foot note on the season

PTBNL is generally used to postpone a trade’s final terms, more often than not done for 2 reasons: A) The team receiving the PTBNL might not be certain which position they want to fill, OR B) More time to scout available talent of the other team. Usually there is some agreement on a list of 5-10 players, meaning minor league prospects, often deeper in the system.

There are rules to a PTBNL transaction, two in fact: 1) The deal must close within a six-month time frame and 2) the player must change leagues. Once a player named Harry Chiti was traded for himself in return. There are a few notable players who were PTBNL: Ortiz, Schmidt, Moises Alou, Bonderman, Podsednik, and Coco Crisp just to name a few.

The current article on cubs.com says Lou wants to roll with 11 pitchers till the ASB, so that means 2 pitchers will go down and one bench player. I am guessing

Fuld does appear to be more useful than Hoff right now… however Hoff gives us a key LH bat off the bench… ReJo can do everything Fuld can and had proven himself at the major league level… should be interesting.

I'd say it's possible Soriano could be DL'd.

After all, he’s gone on the DL for the last two seasons and it hasn’t impeded the Cubs from making the playoffs. Why not? And look for the roster moves to be announced right before game time – 5ish.

I'm guessing it'll be Hart, Fuld, and Hoffpauir/Shark

Unless my math is really bad, the Cubs now have 38 guys on the 40 man roster and

25 on the 25 man roster—before the three guys are put back on the roster tonight. More trades coming?

Assuming no trades, my guess is the Shark, Hart & Hoff go down today, with the Shark getting a start in Iowa, so that he may get called back up for a start in the DH on Sunday. At that point, LBR or Hart may go down to get more work (assuming no more DL action).

Why would that signal more trades coming?

The three guys on the DL are currently on the 40-man roster. They’ll move to the 25-man roster and three guys will go from the 25-man roster to the 40-man roster.

I think it has been like this for some time. I can’t recall the last time the Cubs were up to 40.

It was actually a lot less earlier this year...

I think at one point we were at 34. That was before Blanco, Scales and Waddell were added to the roster and Baker was acquired. You’re right though – we’ve typically had less than 40 guys on the 40-man roster.

…they’re going to try and bury Patton on the DL for the rest of the season. IIRC, there’s a wrinkle in the Rule 5 rules that says a team can put a player on the 60-day DL after a certain amount of time.

rehab him in the minors. get him some innings like the buccos did with donald veal. he’s allowed 30 days on the dl. he’ll use that time between now and the end of august and probably come up when someone else gets hurt.

he may get all of his service time in. or he may have to stay in the bigs for a few days at the start of 2010 before getting farmed out.

the question will be…. will we have 40 other guys more worthy of a 40 man roster spot come december?

For the record the only current Jewish player who probably qualifies as "practicing " is Marquis but there are a dozen or more Jewish players on MLB rosters. I kind of like the Stanford economics degree though. Unlike a lot of other players he would probably be making MORE if he had not stayed in baseball.
