I went to the Boise Hawks game tonight. I'll say more in a fan post tomorrow. The Hawks didn't look very good, but if you want some good news to hold you over until tomorrow, I'll just tell you that there is no need to worry about Hak-Ju Lee staying at shortstop. He's a helluva defensive shortstop. The best I've ever seen playing for the Hawks.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were run off the rails by the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-1.
Casey Fossum took the loss, going five innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He was impressive in that he struck out seven and didn't walk anyone.
Right fielder So Taguchi lead-off the game with his second home run of the season. Taguchi was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were sunk by the Carolina Mudcats, 6-0.
Jay Jackson had a rough start tonight. Jackson allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. Jackson only struck out two.
Left fielder Ty Wright was 2 for 3 with a walk. Second baseman Tony Thomas (there's a name we haven't heard from in a while) was 2 for 4.
Daytona Cubs
The Daytona Cubs were done in by the Dunedin Blue Jays, 5-1.
Chris Carpenter continues the Cub system's bad starts tonight. Carpenter allowed five runs on five hits and four walks in only four innings. The silver lining was that only three of the runs Carpenter allowed were earned and he did strike out eight.
Center fielder Tony Campana was 2 for 3 with a walk and the lone D-Cub run.
Peoria Chiefs
Hey, Hey! The Peoria Chiefs thrashed the Beloit Snappers, 7-3.
Starter Chris Archer allowed only four hits and one run over 4.1 innings. The bad news on Archer was that he did walk four. The good news was that he struck out five (as well as only allowing one run, of course.)
Alberto Cabrera also pitched 4.1 innings and got the win because of the stupid "starter must go five" rule. Cabrera gave up two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Third baseman David Macias was 3 for 4 and scored twice.
Shortstop Ryan Flaherty was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Second baseman Junior Lake had a double in a 2 for 3 game. He scored once and had one RBI.
Catcher Mario Mercedes was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks were blanked by the Eugene Emeralds, 6-0.

AZL Cubs
The Cubs outslugged the Brewers, 10-7.

Hak-Ju Lee
I have watched quite a few of the Boise Hawks games on their website and in every game Lee always seems to be involved in everything; whether taking a walk, stealing a base you name it. I look forward to seeing him move up through the system. I am also interested to see what you thought of Jae-Hoon Ha and Brett Jackson . Hope you took some pictures while at the Hawks game.

This angers me.
At that point, Chris Carpenter had pitched 2.1 innings. As you can tell from the box score, he went back out and continued pitching after a 45 minute rain delay.
For those of you who don’t know Carpenter or his history very well, the guy had a number of injury problems over the course of his amateur career, which was a large part of the reason why the Cubs were able to get him in the third round despite his talent.
I read the results earlier today and I’m still stunned. Who in their right mind thought sending Carpenter back out after a 45 minute rain delay was a good idea? What conceivable good could come from it? His injury history alone should have made the Cubs play it on the safe side. I hate second guessing the front office and management, especially when it comes to things like prospect development, but that is just completely and utterly moronic. That is how pitchers get hurt. I really, really, really hope nothing comes from this.

I'm a little confused as to why...
…the Cubs are stretching out Fossum as a starter. Wouldn’t he be well-suited to plug into the bullpen as a LOOGY so Marshall could go to the rotation while Demp is out? Maybe I’m oversimplifying.

Fossum is here to be in our bullpen. I think he’s in Iowa to soak up innings.
Sometimes you need guys in the minors who are just there to be teammates to the guys you expect to actually go into the majors.
Now that’s not to say the situation couldn’t change in the future. Scales and Blanco were just signed to be bodies in Iowa and they played well enough there to contribute to the major league team.
