Because of the June 4 rainout in Atlanta that was made up on June 22, today is the Cubs' first off-day since June 15, twenty-five days ago. I'm sure they appreciate it, and so do I -- it's been pretty busy around here. Not just with a game a day, but also with various big-news items such as Ryan Dempster's toe-jam jump and Tom Ricketts finishing the deal to buy the team -- sort of.
So today, I present to you a collection of miscellaneous random links from around the Cubs and baseball. Discuss away.
First, from Carrie Muskat's blog, this astonishingly detailed description from new hitting coach Von Joshua as to why some of the Cubs aren't hitting. Specifically, Milton Bradley:Joshua thought Bradley had made progress during the Cubs' series in Detroit, especially from the left side. But he sees the switch-hitter reverting back to bad habits. What Bradley is doing is starting off open with the lower half of his body, but he's closed with his upper half. That doesn't work.
"What happens is he dives with his foot toward the plate, and his upper body continues to turn even more," Joshua said. "You can read his whole name on his back before he starts his rotation. You can't hit like that."
And yes, Joshua and others have pointed it out to Bradley and he is aware of it.
"What I'm trying to do is get him to either match his upper half to his lower half, or match his lower half to his upper half and have everything work as one unit," Joshua said. "What's happening now, is when he dives with his lower half and closes with his upper half, he can't see the pitch."
Switch-hitters can't match their left side swing with their right. They're two different swings, Joshua said.
"If you notice, he's a lot slower and doesn't jump at the ball as much from his right side," Joshua said. "He thinks he's going to be late maybe [from the left side] but, in essence, that slows you up even more. That's what he's fighting right now."
Geez. If Bradley's trying to process all that, no wonder he's not hitting.

That ought to keep you busy on this off-day. Enjoy. (And go Brewers again tonight. Ugh. I feel dirty saying that.)

hansman1982 - July 9, 2009
I can't imagine that Von Joshua is doing anything very differently than Gerald Perry.
SackMan - July 9, 2009
Well, exactly.
The firing of Perry was a move to “do something”, not that it mattered.
Joshua himself was fired as White Sox batting coach under similar conditions in 2001, so he should understand very well.
Al Yellon - July 9, 2009
Maybe Bradley should go down to the minors during the all star break and work on his swing?
Itchy - July 9, 2009
this is the same in golf
He is all screwed up and needs to sit for a while. Making this public is part of that.
Play Fox and Hoffpauir until he is got his swing back.
Ivy Walls - July 9, 2009
why on earth
would sitting and not seeing live pitching help Bradley?
drewishdrewid - July 9, 2009
I guess the days of "see ball, hit ball"
Don’t apply to some players. More than likely, throwing so much information at some playeres is sensory overload.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 9, 2009
It very well could...
…if it clears his head.
Some hitters produce a dominoe effect when they keep pressing and then they build bad habits/mechanics. If you step away for a couple of days, it can help you start again fresh and without so many negative thoughts.
I would guess, Bradley is suffering from some; paralysis from analysis and that is death for a hitter.
MPH73 - July 9, 2009
Or maybe, Bradley should just bat right-handed all the time, even against right handed pitchers

but a lot of those situations are up to the interpretation of the umpire… I actually had that situation where a runner scored in the midst of a double play but unfortunately we had stubborn umpires and no access to instant replay so we lost the game

ChiTown2ShineIn'09 - July 9, 2009
TWSS
daver - July 9, 2009
True, it is not clear as described
But it seems to be implied by the choices and answer that the ball could be headed out, and if you swat it foul, it’s a double, which seems nuts. No mention is made of any judgment by the ump of where the ball is headed, only of where it was touched and ends up.
cubmudgeon - July 9, 2009
True dat
which does take out some of the subjective ruling…
hansman1982 - July 9, 2009
I managed 6 out of 10
Not because I know the rules so well, but because I avoided some answers I thought were correct and chose answers I couldn’t ever foresee happening. Like the Umpires going and notofying everyone that the game was actually won 3-2 by the home team in regulation instead of losing 4-2 in 12.
That will probably happen to the Cubs this year.
Tim M - July 9, 2009
oh yeah
i definitely got that one wrong. 5/10 total. do you think every umpire actually knows all of the details to these rules off the top of their heads?

funny line from Washington Post story today
Realize this is off topic but you rarely see this type of sarcasm from a beat reporter, yet here is how the Nats beat reporter wrote about yet another Nationals drubbing yesterday. “On a day when several veterans received the day off, bench players seized the opportunities to showcase absolutely nothing.”
That is one of the most amusing lines I’ve ever seen by a beat writer. BTW, while the Nats have given us fits in DC the past few years, if the Cubs don’t go in there and obliterate this god-awful team I’ll be at a complete loss.
BeltwayCubsFan - July 9, 2009
That's an outstanding line.
The Nats are on pace to lose 115 games and are 15-26 at home. You’re right, if the Cubs don’t win 3 of 4 — and preferably sweep — in DC, it’ll be a disaster.
Al Yellon - July 9, 2009
I still like Ralph Nader's line
He asked the Post why they were not covering his campaign and they responded that they did not think it newsworthy or a good use of their resources to cover a canditate who had no chance of winning to which he responded " then why do you cover the
Washington Nationals ? "
Doggie Stalker - July 9, 2009
BTW...
as a Cubs fan who has given up on “next” year…we will get swept in DC

From the Washingtonian, I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. The comments are rough, particular the Syracuse-bashing (grrr).
Another take from Washington City Paper.
Chris Dobbertean - July 9, 2009
Three of the questions in that quiz have only quasi-answers...
Stuff like “well, the correct answer should have been ‘a’, but we think the umpires would rule ‘b’, so we say ‘b’ is correct.” Or, "it’s up to the discretion of the umpire and it could be ‘b’ or ‘c’, so we think the answer should be “b.”
I got credit for 5 of 10, with 3 of my “incorrect” answers being debatable (based on the description of the correct answers provided in the quiz). I legitimately missed two.

hansman1982 - July 9, 2009
If Bradley is having so much problems from the left side.....
…why can’t he bat only righty from now on?
ronsanto10 - July 9, 2009
Bradley's career #s as a LH suggest he'll turn it around.
vs RHP as LH = .265 | 73 HR | 280 RBI
vs LHP as RH = .306 | 36 HR | 138 RBI
link
SackMan - July 9, 2009
He's always been much better as a RH batter than as a LH batter...
Note that in your stats, he’s had nearly 3 times as many AB as a LH batter vs RHP than as a RH batter vs LHP.
His career OPS is 100 points higher from the right side. He should be doing better than he has this year from the left side, but he’s still only slightly above average from the left side for his career.
SouthernCub - July 9, 2009
I'm waiting for a reporter to work up the moxie to ask him this question.
Actually, come to think of it, Judd Sirrott asked him about his struggles from the left side on the pregame the other day, and I think Milton just gave a typical ballplayer’s non-answer. I do wonder whether, if things continue to go south this month, Bradley would consider hitting only from the right side the rest of the way out. Probably not.
daver - July 9, 2009
Better yet, a reporter should ask the GM if he's happy with his LH power outfielders
he’s acquired the past two seasons.
N Oakley - July 9, 2009
Maybe the third time's a charm?
daver - July 9, 2009
Ask the lions that same question

hansman1982 - July 9, 2009
You'd think I'd learn.
Excited about Soriano acquisition, tricked by fantasy baseball and media into believing he’s a 4.5 tool player.
Excited about Fukudome acquisition, tricked by media into believing he’s a superstar cross between Godzilla and Ichiro.
Excited about Bradley acquisition, tricked by media and sabermagicians into believing his bat is valued at twice the price.
All I’ve realized is that I’m naive and gullible.
Not that any of these guys are horrible by themselves, it’s the aggregate of their talent multiplied by their contracts that has me going all Blou over them.
N Oakley - July 10, 2009
I suspect
he’ll do what Lou & Von tell him to do.
drewishdrewid - July 9, 2009
You think if they told him to quit hitting from the left side he'd do it?
I’m not so sure – he’s been a switch-hitter his entire career (I think). That would be like giving up. Then again, I wonder whether he’d consider it if they told him, “Just give it up for this season and we’ll work on it during the off-season.”
daver - July 9, 2009
I think that
if Lou said “don’t swing from the left side” he wouldn’t do it.
However, I think it’s the other way around. He’s struggling with batting LH, and they’re telling him to keep at it.
drewishdrewid - July 9, 2009

Only a +1 on the KOWZR. If he repeated the header in the first line of the he would be +5.
N Oakley - July 10, 2009
Half the season is gone and Bradley is trying to make adjustments now??
just bat righty the rest of the way….
ronsanto10 - July 9, 2009
players make adjustments
all the time.
drewishdrewid - July 9, 2009
obviously the ones he's tried thus far have failed, so........
maybe batting righty wouldn’t be a bad idea
Clutche - July 9, 2009
I think it would be really interesting
if 40,000 people stood over you while you did your work and screamed “don’t do it that way! I have no knowledge that’s relevant, but that’s wrong!” for 2.5-4 hours every day you worked.
drewishdrewid - July 9, 2009
I also think it would be really interesting
if I were to receive upwards of $18M a year for the next several years while 40,000 people stood over me and screamed at me while I did my work for 2.5-4 hours a day.
I’d probably buy a really nice set of earplugs. Oh, I’d smile and wave a lot, too.
ballhawk - July 9, 2009
whoops - just realized I was channeling Soriano here instead of Bradley
so I amend my above response to receive on average only $10M a year for three years.
I’d still buy some earplugs, but maybe I wouldn’t be able to afford the really nice ones now. Oh, and I’d still smile and wave a lot.
ballhawk - July 9, 2009
I'm not sure what this has to do with him batting righty

Sorry, but this would apply to Bradley as well........
not the sharpest knives in the drawer. I understand Ozzie interviews better than these two geniuses.

Actually, Bradley seems like a pretty smart guy to me.
And Soriano speaks several languages and is reportedly pretty bright as well.

it’s that extra 10% effort that makes one a winner.
Clutche - July 10, 2009
I know, but it's still a silly comment.
If you feel you’re giving 110%, then you must usually only give 80-90%.
N Oakley - July 10, 2009
I didn't coin the phrase.....
it’s purpose, of course, is simply to make the point that some athletes exert more time and effort into their craft than others
Clutche - July 10, 2009
I understand, but it is a throwaway line,
both because it’s innacurate and frequently used by players to call out others.
I don’t believe MJ is an all knowing sage, but whether a fan or not, he gave all he had. That he always used this line is/was a big pet peeve.
N Oakley - July 10, 2009
What I don't like about is,
Why not 115%? 200%?
Obviously, it’s hyperbole, but I’m with you…it’s silly.
Shanghai Badger - July 10, 2009
You convinced me to never, ever.......
use it again.
Clutche - July 10, 2009
Agreed. Always thought a teammate stating that
another was not giving 100% was much clearer and very critical. Not giving 110% is too passive.
Don’t want a Seinfeldian rant, but if the complaint is a player is not giving 110%, are they being complemented for giving 100%? To say a guy is only giving 70% is calling the guy out as lazy and not earning his contract. A more direct angle and less passive.
N Oakley - July 10, 2009

You're not calling anyone out? Oh please.
I was very critical of Lee’s performance and I ADMITTED I WAS WRONG. I never criticized him for not hustling and giving less than 100%, just that I thought he was on a downward spiral.
I criticize Soriano for his lack of focus, hustle and performance. Quite a difference wouldn’t you agree?

I will be at the games on Friday and the night game on Sunday. Sadly at this point I would rather see Wells pitch than Z cause Wells has been so consistently good. I wish I knew where the tickets were for either game but my family forgets every time I ask. If any are in the bleachers Ill try to stop by your group in right Al.

More likely to see Z in the night game
I figure they want to give him as much rest as possible.
Doggie Stalker - July 9, 2009
Also, Z loves the spotlight
and usually the veteran has the choice of which game he wants to start. I’d guess Z would prefer to start on national TV on ESPN.

True
But I would still rather watch Wells at this point. But I guess we will see. Probably not gonna know till I get to the park sunday, or a tweet from gordo as I will only have my phone all weekend and no internet.

Not only that
but if Wells struggles in the first game, I trust Z more to gut out a deep game and do something to save the ’pen.

DudeVf11 - July 9, 2009
Doesn't seem that complicated to me
He just needs to pick one thing to think about as he’s preparing for the pitch: either rotate his upper body out more in his stance, or step more straight at CF rather than toward third. Either one aligns his upper half with his bottom half in a way that he can see the ball.
By the way, it seems to me this is just what you would expect to see from someone trying too hard. He is tensing up and trying to get big torque on every swing. That’s why his upper body gets too closed.
Sort of like that golfer who just can’t get rid of his slice, no matter how HARD he swings at the ball. (The harder he swings, the more his club face wants to rotate out.) Pretty simple, really.

Heyward is the next crime dog - July 9, 2009
I guessed on 2 using elimination

Fukudometer - July 9, 2009
I had no idea on number 4 either
Heyward is the next crime dog - July 9, 2009
I'm too embarassed to divulge my quiz results.
Let’s just say I have another reason to hate umpires – because they’re smarter than me!
daver - July 9, 2009
I got 3 out of 10. Not much to brag about.
Vermont Cubs Fan - July 9, 2009

Fukudometer - July 9, 2009
I just heard Hawk say:
“Martinez on deck. Choo in the hole”
That sounded funny.
Mapmaker - July 9, 2009
Shame on you for listening to Hawk...
Tsk tsk…
chilango2 - July 9, 2009

Hurtful
Mapmaker - July 9, 2009
Has he said "Hell yeah!" during one of his home run calls?
He seems to have added that after Konerko’s three-dinger day.

Works for me.
Al Yellon - July 9, 2009
Cards win , Piniero goes the whole game
They don’t even use the BP , darn. However it is not clear who they will start in game 2 Sunday.
Doggie Stalker - July 9, 2009
Got 4 of 10 on the quiz Al.
Got 1, 3, 8 & 9 correct. 40%. :P
But based on yesterday’s call at 2nd base on Dome, I guess I have bright future as a major league umpire.
Now I know what I can do in my retirement years… :)
Zeke - July 9, 2009
4 out of 10...
immessedup17 - July 9, 2009

CubfaninRaleigh(869milestoWrigley) - July 9, 2009
Fire Von Joshua
We threw Gerald Perry under the bus for no reason. Might as well cut to the chase and do the same with Joshua. It can’t POSSIBLY be the fault of Soriano, Kosuke and Bradley that they cannot fucking hit better. PUKE.
BLou - July 9, 2009
tonight i dream of a sweep of the cardinals.
this is our best opportunity to essentially turn the season around in 4 games, 4 little games boys. take them apart. all 4, and don’t look back.
buckmulligan - July 9, 2009
Other than this comment....
…I took the day off from Cubs baseball to head down to the UC to select my new season ticket location for 2009-10.
My comment will for the time being will continue to be my signature line.
blackhawk24 - July 9, 2009
And where are your new seats?
will you be able to snag an errant puck or two?
ballhawk - July 9, 2009
a fledgling puckhawk?
Emelie - July 9, 2009
Section 115...
… a few rows up in the corner. I can eye the benches, see each corner of the rink and not have the netting in my view (it drives me nuts). I’ve never been down this low on ST’s so it’ll be interesting. And they’re actually cheaper than the 200-level tix I had last season.
Snagging a puck will still be tough since I’m not on an aisle and the netting does go overhead somewhat.
