In case you have not yet heard, Justin Berg has been returned to Iowa to make room for Ted Lilly's activation from the DL today.
The Padres are the only outside-the-NL-Central team that the Cubs will have three series with this year. This will be the second trip for the Cubs to Petco -- they got swept by a Padres team that got off to a reasonably good start back in May. In fact, after that sweep, the Cubs and Padres were both at .500 (Cubs, 21-21; Padres, 22-22). Since then, the Cubs are 39-34 and the Padres are 27-48. The May sweep occurred during a time right after Aramis Ramirez went down with the shoulder injury and the Cubs were refusing to score runs (they scored only three runs in that series and only five on the first six games of that trip).
That was then, this is now. The Padres made a major trade last month, getting four pitchers from the White Sox for Jake Peavy, and have several other players on their roster who weren't there in May; they are clearly retooling for next year. Let's take advantage of that. They still have Adrian Gonzalez, who would be a MVP candidate if he were on a better team, but that's really about it for their offense. They've lost four in a row and are 15-28 since July 1.
Some of you might see tonight's Cardinals/Dodgers pitching matchup -- Chris Carpenter vs. Charlie Haeger -- as a mismatch. What you are forgetting is that Haeger is a knuckleballer, nearly a lost art in the major leagues today. There's only one other knuckleballer around -- Tim Wakefield -- and the Cardinals last faced Wakefield on June 20, 2008. If a knuckleball pitcher is on, he can be nearly unhittable. Or totally hittable. This may not be as much of a mismatch as you think.

| Today's Starting Pitchers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kevin Correia -- who looks like he didn't want to have his picture taken -- has no record, but a 9.90 ERA in two starts he made vs. the Cubs last year as a member of the Giants. The last one was a nine-hit, seven-run pounding in 3.2 innings on July 12, 2008 at Wrigley Field. Current Cubs are hitting .349 (17-for-49) against Correia; Jeff Baker and Milton Bradley have homered off him.
Ted Lilly returns from the DL to face a team he has fared well against in the past -- 5-2, 3.55 in eight career appearances (seven starts). Adrian Gonzalez has hit him well, but Adrian Gonzalez hits everyone well, so that's no surprise (4-for-14, a double, a triple, a HR). Ted is 1-1 vs. San Diego this year, the loss coming in the Cubs' last trip west, on May 24. That game might have been winnable if Aaron Heilman hadn't come in and blown a 4-2 deficit into a 7-2 deficit.
Today's game should be on EI via TV4 San Diego. However, you may be out of luck in the blackout areas -- games on WCIU can be weird that way. "Check local listings". For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

sue369 - August 17, 2009
it is on EI, via 733-1 (HD), right?
at least for those outside of Chicago
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2009
Could be if you have EI

Mondays are the fiances day at class
…..I had a housewarming/engagement party this Saturday on our roof for the Air Show and someone brought me a bottle of J/W. I am enjoying it…..damn West Coast games – Ill never make it.
I normally wake up in the middle of the night to check the score too so I will know who won at about 3am.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
I rushed home...mowed the yard
had a red bull so I could stay up…then realized game not on tv
cozmotaylor123 - August 17, 2009
Technically, Correia is the staff ace.
Unless the kid from AA, Mat Latos who is 4-2, qualifies already.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 17, 2009
Ted Lilly counted to infinity...
TWICE
cubfanwill - August 17, 2009
...ask him
…if he can cure my puppies gnawing issue.
If so……Ill order the wax figure.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
Gnawing on what?
Allie - August 17, 2009
that's the issue!
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2009
Well
if its gnawing on furniture, you catch it in the act and give it something it CAN chew on (a bone, a toy, whatever).
If its chewing on you, you move your arms and ignore it until it stops and does something good (sit, down, goes and plays with a toy, whatever) because talking to him/petting will only encourage the behavior.
Allie - August 17, 2009
Ha - its not a baby
but my she keeps ending things with “thats what the book says”
Apparently when I was hoo humming around watcihing baseball she bought a puppy book.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
Well
tell her “thats what a trainer said”. :-)
Allie - August 17, 2009
gnawing on puppies?
eeew
tim815 - August 17, 2009
Only Ted Lilly could do that
Since infinity is by definition infinite therefore you can’t ever finish once….

Good evening, ladies and chaps
What’s the good word? Did Miles get sucked down by his hotel room toilet yet?
Lineup, via King of the Hoebags:
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
Fu?
Is that Fuld or Dome?
Allie - August 17, 2009
Looks like a winner....
….and then I saw Miles was batting in front the hacker Teddy.
Lets get 6 good innings from Ted and we got this.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
My guess is Fukudome
If I were this [expletive deleted] editor, he would’ve been fired years ago.
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
That was my guess as well
but with Sullivan its impossible to use logic.
Allie - August 17, 2009
And twittermyer agrees
Same lineup, different time zone: fuky, milt, lee, rami, fox (7), font, soto, miles (6), lilly.
Allie - August 17, 2009
It is Fukudome, per Wittenmyer
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
Well...
8 out of 9 ain’t bad. I like the lineup until Miles. If we can keep the first four in the lineup the rest of the year good things should happen.
cubbiefanTN - August 17, 2009 via mobile
Where is
Blanco? stilon dl? sheesh!
plenz - August 17, 2009
allowed to come off tomorrow
but the word on the street is he’ll be given a rehab assignment until the roster expands.

Sorry Sue and Alli, but
that is the bullshit of all bullshits.
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
totally agree
sue369 - August 17, 2009
Why we signed Miles
at all, I’ll never understand.
Allie - August 17, 2009
The second year...
Is what I’ll never, ever, understand.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
to be
the poor man’s DeRosa — he was supposed to bring flexibility to the infield. At the time, it made some amount of sense. The problem is, he’s lost his ability, or something. Baker now brings that flexibility, to a point.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2009
The only problem with that...
Is DeRo could also play the corner OF positions, 1B and 3rd. Miles is serviceable at 2nd, and pretty bad at SS.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
For a "poor man's DeRosa"....
He’s going to wind up costing exactly the same amount of money.
D98 - August 17, 2009 via mobile
I know.
I didn’t say that it’s not terrible in hindsight.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2009

Goodie1969 - August 17, 2009
Hopefully Theriot
is better tomorrow and this is the last time we see Miles in the lineup………EVER.
sue369 - August 17, 2009
twittermyer agrees
Theriot (flu) stayed back in Chi monday. Saw doc again. Expected in SD tuesday.
Allie - August 17, 2009

he should come running out of whichever house is his, and weakly ground the ball back to you.

CAPTION: "Hey, it's Enrico Palazzo"
Referring to the umpire, of course…
DKT - August 17, 2009
Great reference...
…..gotta tell you Mike Reilly to me is top 5 terribly bad umpire in the league. He doesnt draw attention but to be honest is sucks.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
I hope Miles can draw a walk at least
or get hit by a pitch so he can get on base once.
mrcubsfan - August 17, 2009
Hit by pitch
get on base.
go back on DL
chitownhawkeye - August 17, 2009
yes, yes, yes
sue369 - August 17, 2009
This plan
is full of WIN!
Goodie1969 - August 17, 2009
How does taht happen
….when he swings at the first pitch always.
Hammer - August 17, 2009
I'm just hoping he doesn't get chances to do any more damage than a single out
He makes an out 77.4% of the time, and only 12.2% of that is by strikeout. So that’s a 65.2% chance of a ball in play (outs). I don’t want him coming up with runners on.
shake n bake - August 17, 2009
That's a new and very interesting way of focusing on my hatred towards him
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
forgot to account for it being a RHP
He makes an out 78.1% of the time vs RHP, and only 11.1% of that is by strikeout. So that’s a 65.2% chance of a ball in play (outs). So that’s a 67% chance of a ball in play (outs).
shake n bake - August 17, 2009
That stumpy little creep...
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
Does getting HBP count as a pitch seen per AB?
Cuz I think Miles is trying to break the record for fewest ever.
Allie - August 17, 2009
Blanco is the only hitter on the roster with a lower Pit/PA
Lilly has a higher Pit/PA meaning Miles’ is the lowest of the lineup.
shake n bake - August 17, 2009
More likely...
Ground out to the SS.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
Such silence...
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
Saving my
energy to bitch about Miles when the game starts. :D
sue369 - August 17, 2009
F***ing moving
I hate f***ing moving, and this is the second time in less than 3 weeks.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
What happened? Where are you now?
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
First move was all of my crap to Fargo
Now it’s all of my GF’s crap (and mine) to a place she doesn’t hate.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
Oh, OK
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
Why is Baker not starting?
These games count!
Itchy - August 17, 2009
now I really don't know
now that he’s had a day off, after going a week straight.
shake n bake - August 17, 2009
good question
sue369 - August 17, 2009
The umpire in that photo
reminds me of the crazy old caretaker who was always trying to scare off Scooby and the Gang.
Goodie1969 - August 17, 2009
quick question
Does anyone know if the games on WCIU are in HD?
xene - August 17, 2009
They are on Comcast.
DirecTV I’m not sure about.
Goodie1969 - August 17, 2009
Yeah i have direct tv
And i got my hd receiver today.
xene - August 17, 2009
ESPN2 The Deuce
has Redbirds v. Trolley Dodgers at 9 also.
The “Previous Channel” button on my remote is going to get a workout tonight.
Goodie1969 - August 17, 2009
You know what
They left me out of espn2. I had it with my previous receiver
xene - August 17, 2009
Si. Todo esta en HD
Pero tienes que hablar a que te activen el servicio, por modicos $9.95 al mes. Ojetes…
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
does that say that Bud Selig sucks?
LT - August 17, 2009
Hola chilango
Si tengo todo listo para ver a los cubs en hd.
Una pregunta,
Miles == el chapulin colorado?
SWL make it happen.
xene - August 17, 2009
No mamesssss, respeta al Chapulín!
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
nunca contamos con su astucia
xene - August 17, 2009
El Chapulín es lo mas ruín que puede haber en la tele, pero
no lo compares con el puto cochino de Miles.
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
"dale Miles, la concha de tu madre. Pone huevos pedazo de puto"
xene - August 17, 2009
I remember just enough Spanish
To grin at a few of those words up there. And nod vigorously.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
It's funny
I always pronounce chilango in my head as Chie-lango (long ‘i’), but the moment I saw ‘Hola’ in front of it, my head pronounced it Chee-lango.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
They are...
But the audio on WCIU sucks for some reason.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
OK, we had rain yesterday
to keep Miles out of the lineup. What do you think God does this time?
I’m saying those dolphins and whales at Sea World attack.
Won’t be here tonight. Game not on TV in the downstate hinterlands.
Worf - August 17, 2009
Maybe Miles...
Accidentally wanders into Tijuana to mysteriously miss tonight’s game? It could happen…
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
"Aaron... c'mon, we're getting beers and tequila!"
“OK, guys, thanks for inviting me. I didn’t think you liked me that much.”
“Nah, man, you’re cool. Hey listen, just throw that passport in the bag. We’re all keeping them together… you’ll get it back.
“Honest.
Worf - August 17, 2009

Just sayin’, ahem… Theriotifyou’rereadingthis…
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
well theriot obviously can't handle the tequila.
xene - August 17, 2009
Tonight's Game Is Also Televised Via...
…the MLB At Bat App for the iPhone. It’s one of the two daily free games for those who have the iPhone and the application.
it’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing.
wrigley_boy - August 17, 2009
Do they still have those ridiculous blackout restrictions?
Urbanfury - August 17, 2009
Yup.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
Oddly enough
The blackouts on the iPhone are only if you’re in the geographic area. No Saturday day games are blacked out (unless you’re in the geographic area).
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
It's the same with the games on a P.C
If you connect to MLB.TV through a network that’s not in the blackout zone for a particular team, then you can watch the games (that’s exactly how you can fool the servers with a proxy)
cubsnlinux - August 17, 2009
Never worked that way for me
MLB.TV on the PC has always blacked out every Saturday day game. MLB.TV + At-Bat App blacks out only the local Staurday day game, AFAICT.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
I don't condone any type of pirating
but this could be helpful to those of you outside Chicago.
chilango2 - August 17, 2009
blackout based on the GPS in your iPhone
so put the “pedal to the metal” and drive as far from the WCIU range as you can!!
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2009
I thought WCIU's broadcast radius was about 4 blocks
I’m 600 miles away, anyway…
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
I guess the blackout is based on what WCIU's salespeople
say is their broadcast range when they are selling ad time
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2009
Yes.
In fact, the app uses the phone’s GPS to determine if you’re within a blackout zone.
This is just an alternative for those people who can’t get tonight’s game on EI.
wrigley_boy - August 17, 2009
Look, I think the cards have the division BUT
the cubs have the easiest schedule compared to it’s wild card competition and that is well within reach regardless of the cardinals play. that’s what keeps me going.
ballstitch - August 17, 2009
3.5 games out...
With CO, SF, and FL ahead of us. I think the Division is still attainable because we play St. Louis 4 more times.
CubsBullsBears - August 17, 2009
3 times actually
Doggie Stalker - August 17, 2009
Here at petco
After last four games at wrigley. How is baker not in lineup? I swear Lou hates me and just does this kinda stuff to drive me buts.
paulucla - August 17, 2009 via mobile
Oops
I mean nuts. Darn mobile posting.
paulucla - August 17, 2009 via mobile
I agree with you about Baker, especially the second day in a row he hasn't put Baker in the line up.
Better watch your butts though just to be on the safe side.
Sandberg's evil twin - August 17, 2009
I like Baker too...
… but you do have to give your bench players a start every now & then. Tonight is probably a good day to start Fontenot.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2009
Don't forget
Padres were on a 10-game winning streak when they swept us. It won’t happen again.
ak123 - August 17, 2009
Haeger may be knuckleballer
but he has shown no sign that he is remotely good. I suspect the Dodgers figured with Kurada out and the fact they were facing Carpenter they just said WTF we aren’t going to win anyway so lets have some fun watching the Cardinals try to hit him and lets have even MORE fun watching Martin (or Ausmus) try to catch him.
Doggie Stalker - August 17, 2009
Dodgets cant afford to lose games either
They have a lot of games left with SF and CO. I think they’re going to avenge STL from their 4 game set and take this series.
ak123 - August 17, 2009
Not on Extra Innings
Despite what Al said the game doesn’t seem to be scheduled on here at least on Cablevision.
But I get two feeds of STL/Dodgers and the ESPN telecast to choose from :(
ak123 - August 17, 2009
Not even the Padres feed?
Sucks. I was planning on hauling another couple of loads and then going to get a beer at a bar that has EI.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2009
The game was posted on EI's web site
from InDemand:

San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 18, 2009
Correct me if I'm wrong
But isn’t R.A. Dickey a knuckleballer as well?
zam - August 17, 2009
Dickey, I believe, was either just released or sent down.
So he’s not around any more.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2009
back to Miles...
is it true that he is so short that when he sits on the porcelain, his feet do not touch the floor?
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2009
His car was specially ordered
From Fisher-Price
They still have to put blocks on the pedals so he can reach them
