Wisconsin sports are going to be very bad this year.
If it gets real real bad, I wonder if Barry would consider firing Bret and coming back at coach. Bielema was one of the hottest young minds in the game three years ago, now we’re talking about firing him before the damn season even starts.
It’ll be fun b/c I live here and get to gether w/ friends. I don’t think he’d come back and coach……….. but Bret has turned out to be a huge disappointment last year. I hope he can keep focus this year
what did Harden limit the Phils to his last time out – 3 hits and 4 runs? He limited the Pads to 1 hit and 0 runs? It’s not the Cubs necessarily it’s the competition.
but I’m also saying that the Cubs pushed around a couple of nobodies tonite and got pushed over the other two. The Phils saw good pitching and crap pitching and spanked the Cubs every nite. That’s the difference between the two clubs.
He scored from 2nd on a fielders choice once. He is a machine. Martin has cost them at least 3 runs this series. I stopped watching Cubs games and watch only Cards vs. Whoever. Martin has gone down hill for months now
But, as the Cubs find ways to drop games to the Padres — The Friars find a way to an “L” against the Cardinals. It’s been at least 5 years of utter domination by St. Loo.
is overstatement. They are struggling in close games and their closer is burnt out. Watch for Sherrill to close against Cubs and Dodgers to right the ship against the struggling Cubs.
LA was unbeatable the first half. Now, they can’t wrap up a game against the D-backs. I call this a very, very bad slump — which they can certainly pull out of.
I’ve watched this team a lot. They just don’t look the same at all. All of the key hits in crucial situations have dried up.
I have a good feeling about this upcoming series. Complete opposite of the night sweats that happen when the Cubs are in SD.
as I do, then you know they are in every game. Yes, Broxton is struggling and it has hurt them a lot lately. But, they have a contingency plan, which looks pretty darn good right not. Fix the closer situation and they will start winning again. I wouldnt place too much significance on losing 2 out of 3 to the Cardinals – the Cardinals OWN the Dodgers. 28-11 against them the last three years. Cubs are a whole different story. Dodgers have won 5 of last 7, including the NLDS last year.
Yeah, lately the Cubs have had problems with the Dodgers. However, as is well known the all-time series is seperated by — is it 1 game?
Chavez Ravine/Los Angeles has never really been the black hole that San Diego has been for the last 20+ years. Maybe in the early years of the park, when the Cubs sucked and Sandy Koufax was pitching, but over the last 15-20 years, playing in L-A…games are not automatic “L’s” as seems to be the case in San Diego.
have had losing records against the Dodgers in LA 4 of the last 6 years, including the last 2 years. Not sure how that equates to confidence that they will play well there this year, especially when they go in having lost 7 out of last 10.
Well I hope so but I wish it were not THIS weekend.
He is on my fantasy team where holds are not a stat and has been virtually worthless since the trade. Leave it to the Dodgers
to let Broxton screw up saves Vs the Cardinals and wait till the Cubs come to town to use Sherrill.
the pressure is intense to move Sherrill into the closer’s role in LA right now. I predict it will happen this weekend.
When I was at the Dodgers-D’Backs game saturday night, when Kurouda got drilled by a line drive, Dodgers fans sitting behind me said “Too bad it wasn’t Broxton”.
He needs to prove he can do it. It’s that simple. He had a crappy spring, ruined by the WBC. Gregg coasted through the Cactus League with 9 saves against AAA players who were in the game by the time he stepped in.
His AZ record decieved everybody, perhaps even Lou. Marmol never got his act together. I think he thought he’d have a shot to close, and management was apparently unhappy he chose the WBC over Mesa.
Had there been REAL competition — who knows? He’s young. A guess — but I think his confidence was shattered. It then spread into the season, and mushroomed.
…on the WBC being the cross Marmol has had to bear. Maybe, but I don’t think it’s the entirety of the problem; while I still think that there’s some funk left over from the “100-years of Suck”, Marmol needs some work on mechanics.
If he can find his control, he’s definitely the go to guy. Perhaps a veteran closer could be brought in to help him out? I would’ve pursued Trevor Hoff like gangbusters last off season.
Oh hai
A win thread!

Apparently we are winning.
Which is odd.

I might go to the Minnesota game @ Minny.
I’d rather go to a Camp Randall game, but I think the game at the new stadium could be fun. And I’d love to spoil it for the Gophers.
dtpollitt - August 19, 2009
I didn't get any tickets
but I figure I’ll be able to pick some up on Craiglist during the season if I want. Purdue plays UW on Halloween. That should be an interesting game

I think this team should be named "The 2009 Jekyll & Hyde Cubs".
We play like this and wow, we are shut-down good. Timely hits, excellent starting pitching. Other days, not so much. Talk about a roller coaster.
dtpollitt - August 19, 2009
Respectfully, I disagree...
what did Harden limit the Phils to his last time out – 3 hits and 4 runs? He limited the Pads to 1 hit and 0 runs? It’s not the Cubs necessarily it’s the competition.
Gibbon Jockey - August 20, 2009
We didn't play HORRIBLY during the Phillies series.
Gregg blew the first game, and we started Shark in the second game. I’m hard-pressed to find anybody that thought Jeff has starter-quality stuff.
dtpollitt - August 20, 2009
I see what you're saying

LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
I'm not trying to be a jerk although it probably sounds like it....
but who cares about players anymore? Not to sound like Seinfeld, but isn’t it about laundry at this point with players going back and forth?
The days of Banks or Sandberg are long gone, so what’s with the crushes?
Gibbon Jockey - August 20, 2009
Good question.
But if a players has a really strong tie to an organization, then yes. Tony Gwynn for example, Kerry Wood is another.
Otherwise it’s very much a mercenary trade.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
That's why I can understand the Kerry Wood thing
but Mark DeRosa? Gimme a break.

LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Both teams looked...

Luckily
Neither team looked as incredibly beatable as the Cubs did versus the Pads :)

Absolutely.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009

LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
I'm talking about the season as a whole.
Gibbon Jockey - August 20, 2009
You won't have much of an argument...
…from me on that point. It says something though, that the Cubs are still technically in it.
Pads have been playing like monsters lately, and it’ll be interesting when the Cards go to PetCo.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Yes, the Pads have played well
However, they have played well v. every team BUT the Cardinals. I don’t have much faith in the Friars against the Cards, who OWN them
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
That last game...
…the two played in New Bush was pretty competitive. It goes the other way if the Pads are at PetCo I believe.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
The Pads were competitive
But, as the Cubs find ways to drop games to the Padres — The Friars find a way to an “L” against the Cardinals. It’s been at least 5 years of utter domination by St. Loo.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009

Or, at least, get him to work one-on-one with Fonzi?
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Cardinals are hitting on all cylinders right now
the Padres are….well, the Padres. you don’t get to 20 games under .500 by accident/

If the Dodgers can’t pull it together, SF will take the division.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
The Dodgers, as I have said earlier
are floundering, and have been since the beginning of the 2nd half.
Broxton — you saw a glimpse of how bad he has been lately. He’s been Gregg-eqsue, blowing (I believe) 7 saves in 3 weeks.
The Cubs could/might have a good series in front of them.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
Broxton/Gregg
Difference is, Dodgers have Sherrill who can close. Dude is lights out.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
They are very fortunate to have Sherill.
However, the team is in a massive slump. We know how that looks.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
Massive Slump
is overstatement. They are struggling in close games and their closer is burnt out. Watch for Sherrill to close against Cubs and Dodgers to right the ship against the struggling Cubs.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Sorry,
LA was unbeatable the first half. Now, they can’t wrap up a game against the D-backs. I call this a very, very bad slump — which they can certainly pull out of.
I’ve watched this team a lot. They just don’t look the same at all. All of the key hits in crucial situations have dried up.

as I do, then you know they are in every game. Dodgers have won 5 of last 7, including the NLDS last year.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
I don't consider post-season records at all.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
Cubs
have had losing records against the Dodgers in LA 4 of the last 6 years, including the last 2 years. Not sure how that equates to confidence that they will play well there this year, especially when they go in having lost 7 out of last 10.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Except they don't use him to close
Doggie Stalker - August 20, 2009
See if they don't
starting this weekend. This is exactly why they picked him up – as insurance in case Broxton struggled.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Well I hope so but I wish it were not THIS weekend.
He is on my fantasy team where holds are not a stat and has been virtually worthless since the trade. Leave it to the Dodgers
to let Broxton screw up saves Vs the Cardinals and wait till the Cubs come to town to use Sherrill.
Doggie Stalker - August 20, 2009
TLR & Torre...
…have a deal. If we can screw the Cubs every way possible, we can make this a two-way competition.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
I am listening
to the Dodgers post game fan call in show right now, and topic #1 is Sherrill replacing Broxton as closer. As you might expect.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Not really surprising if he's blown...
…that many saves this year. 7-blown saves, are seven more games they could be up on the Rockies.
I’m researching this idea for bringing in Hoff to assist Marmol.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Actually
he’s only blown 5 saves. But three of them have been in the last 3 weeks.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
From what I've seen...
…everybody out of the pen could feasibly close.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
No.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
But Sherrill *has* closed
He had 31 saves last year on a bad ballclub
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
My "No" was to the rest of the LA Bullpen as 'closers.'
Sherill has most certainly closed, and I can see him taking the role from Broxton.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
I know
the pressure is intense to move Sherrill into the closer’s role in LA right now. I predict it will happen this weekend.
When I was at the Dodgers-D’Backs game saturday night, when Kurouda got drilled by a line drive, Dodgers fans sitting behind me said “Too bad it wasn’t Broxton”.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Sherrill...
…has closed, but everybody else throughout the series has been pretty damn efficient.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Dodgers have a nice bullpen
but Sherrill has closed and he will take over for Broxton soon.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
The first half, yes.
Not now.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
Not true
Sherrill, Bellisario, Troncoso, Mota, Kuo and McDonald have all been pitching well lately.
azjazzman - August 20, 2009
Too bad he's...
…under control through 2011.
Hendry better be looking high and low throughout the offseason.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
Putting Marmol in the slot is the right move
He needs to prove he can do it. It’s that simple. He had a crappy spring, ruined by the WBC. Gregg coasted through the Cactus League with 9 saves against AAA players who were in the game by the time he stepped in.
His AZ record decieved everybody, perhaps even Lou. Marmol never got his act together. I think he thought he’d have a shot to close, and management was apparently unhappy he chose the WBC over Mesa.
Had there been REAL competition — who knows? He’s young. A guess — but I think his confidence was shattered. It then spread into the season, and mushroomed.
This could be a great change.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
I'm not sold...
Did the Brewers sew him up for multiple years?
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
I don't believe so.
No more old closers. Develop Marmol.
Gotta go!
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
It looks like the Brew Crew
…gave Hoff a 1-year contract. So what about bringing the all-time saves leader into the organization to close out some games, and teach/train Marmol?
The Cubs may be the closest Hoff will ever get to a WS these days.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
And, Manny hasn't been Manny since his return to Mannywood.
Nothing is working very well in the Ravine.
See you there Saturday.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
I'll be there...
…on Saturday if they have walk-up availability.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
They will have tix.
Day games don’t draw as well as night games. There will 45K, but seats will be available.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
I may have to try it.
Drive from Oakland is going to be a pain in the ass, though.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
ooh
Go on line first. I didn’t realize you were driving that far.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - August 20, 2009
I'm supposed to visit family in SD,
so I thought about stopping in on the way down. I may just try and get there on Sunday instead.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
and I'll be there Friday nite & Sunday afternoon
look for an old guy in a BCB tee!
JFCubFan - August 20, 2009
Going tomorrow night!
Look for someone with a blue t-shirt with a big “Cubs” logo on the front, with a former traveling road Cubs cap (red brim, blue cap, red “C”).
Vermont Cubs Fan - August 20, 2009
You were there tonight right ?
You deserved to see a win after the first two.
Doggie Stalker - August 20, 2009
No, I only went to the first game.
Check the other threads to see my comments regarding the first game of this series.
Vermont Cubs Fan - August 20, 2009
I saw them but for some reason thought you were going to all the West Coast games.
Doggie Stalker - August 20, 2009
That was my initial plan.
Can’t spare the cash, though. Times are tight, y’know.
LeSaboteur - August 20, 2009
I had thoughts about going to tonight's game,
But by the time the game started, I was on I-5 north of San Diego in Camp Pendleton.
Couldn’t make it.
I only went to the first game in the San Diego series.
