Last year, the Cubs played a mid-August series at Florida in which the Sunday game had a blast-furnace starting time of 1:35 Eastern time.
This year, the Marlins appear to have come to their senses, starting most of their Sunday games (until September) at 5:05 Eastern time, including today. Given the typical south Florida weather forecast for this time of year:
Today: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 101. East wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 10%.
Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 82. East wind between 6 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 10%.
... that's probably a good idea. (A "low" of 82? It's hardly gotten above 82 in Chicago all summer!)
Tom Gorzelanny, scheduled to start Tuesday vs. the Reds in Cincinnati, is on something of a short leash:
After that, All-Star Ted Lilly is due to return from the disabled list, and unless Carlos Zambrano's stiff lower back is a lingering problem, that would seem to leave no room for Gorzelanny in the rotation.
"We'll see," manager Lou Piniella said. "Right now we've got him scheduled for three starts, and we'll go from there."
For his part, Gorzelanny, who grew up a White Sox fan in the south suburbs, is leaving that all behind:
"But now I'm a diehard Cubs fan," he said. "Everybody [in the family] is. Everybody was extremely excited to hear about it. To come back home and play for the Cubs, it's a good feeling."
Gorzelanny, who will wear No. 22, threw a bullpen session and is slated to make his Cubs debut Tuesday in Cincinnati.
Kevin Hart left the Cubs on an up note wearing that uniform number. Let's hope Gorzelanny does it proud.

Ricky Nolasco's first nine starts this year -- after having what looked like a breakout year in 2008 -- were horrendous. He had a 9.07 ERA and had given up eight runs in consecutive starts without getting out of the fourth inning in either one. The Marlins sent him to Triple-A for two weeks and he appears to have straightened things out; since his return he is 5-2, 2.71 in 10 starts with 73 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 66.1 innings. One of his early-season losses was to the Cubs May 3 at Wrigley Field; Mike Fontenot and Derrek Lee homered off him in that game.
Ryan Dempster is a long-ago Marlin, though he left there in a trade seven years ago. He is 2-1, 2.57 vs. the Marlins in his career, though only two of those appearances are starts, both of them in 2008; in his last appearance at Whatever-It's-Called-Now Stadium on August 17, 2008, he struck out 10 Marlins in 6.1 innings and the Cubs breezed to a 9-2 win. The only current Marlin who has homered off Dempster is Nick Johnson.
TV is cable-only again today, CSN Chicago and FSN Florida. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

im ashamed to admit i laughed at that
burncruisin - August 2, 2009
is it any cooler at 5PM then 1PM
in Florida in August?
brian custer - August 2, 2009
no but
the sun angle is lower… and look out, warm weather back to the chicao next weekend.
ballstitch - August 2, 2009
does the uniform still
come with instructions on the towel toss?
tim815 - August 2, 2009
Yuck lineup
cst_cubs No Rami, no Fuky, no Bradley. Lineup vs. Nolasco: fuld, riot, lee, fox, hoffp, sori, font, hill, demp.
Allie - August 2, 2009
what's yucky about that lineup?
The only thing i hate about it is hoffpauir.
lexmarklover - August 2, 2009
its lou's "i give up"
lineup.
Allie - August 2, 2009
I don't know
A long game in the heat – sit your regulars and give them a breather.
false cognate - August 2, 2009
I'd agree
Plus it’s basically a night game, with travel right afterward. I have no problem with giving these guys a break.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 2, 2009
Agree
Add to that 2 off days this month. He’s gotta rest ’em sometime and after a four hour game with more humidity tonight to deal with, seems to me what he needed to do.
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
Perhaps Lou is "in heat"...
Zeke - August 2, 2009
In that humidity, given his arm was hit and he already is recovering from his shoulder separation,
They needed to give Rami the day off. I’m not quite sure why Bradley and Dome were, you’d always like to give your regs days off with the humidity there though. Let’s hope Fuld and Fox make the most of it! Could be Fuld’s speed gets him to some flyballs Dome wouldn’t as well. I’d sure like seeing Hoff make the most of a rare start for him as well, he hasn’t seemed to deal with the lack of playing time well.
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009

ndcubs - August 2, 2009
Any word on the status of Rami?
I’m sure he’s day to day, but there was still a lot of confusion as to why he came out last night… I will say that bruise on his arm looked pretty bad in HD… hopefully it’s just sore and there isn’t any subdermal damage.
lswaidz - August 2, 2009
I didn't see any bruise
chilango2 - August 2, 2009
Looked pretty pronounced on my TV
Must be that 1080p working over time ;-)
lswaidz - August 2, 2009
i was more worried with how out of it he looked
burncruisin - August 2, 2009
Any updates on Aramis?
Looks like he’s out of the lineup, hopefully it’s just a precautionary day off.
CubsBullsBears - August 2, 2009
+1
After a 4 hour game in that humidity and getting hit coming back from the shoulder separation he needed it. Got my fingers crossed that’s all it is.

No Extra Innings
Apparently us out of market folks don’t get to watch this one due to the silly start time overlapping with ESPN’s black out rights. Does starting it at 5 instead of 4 really make that big a difference? Now I can’t watch my Cubbies! Bleh! :p
WiscCubsFan - August 2, 2009
I'm pissed too, the cutoff to protect ESPN's games is way too early.
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
Yep
Same with the early blackout of noon games for a 3pm Fox start….. I guess they use a cutoff of any game starting w/in 3 hours….
ankeith15 - August 2, 2009
I'd like a win
in 9 innings tonight please. Demp, bring your “A” game.
sue369 - August 2, 2009
After using 7 pitchers last night
I think not only the fans but the pen and Lou are praying for that too…
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
How about a win in 5 innings?
Zeke - August 2, 2009
Prior wore #22 as well, didn't he?
I was actually looking at his game logs from ‘03 earlier today. It’s insane how good he was that year.
kanderber - August 2, 2009

now if he can just get the cards lord and savior
ndcubs - August 2, 2009
I'd consider walking Holliday...Pujols is in a slump but Holliday's on fire.
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
0-2 on Holliday
make that a strike out
mrtobby - August 2, 2009
Holliday behind 0-2 and norris strikes him out on 3 pitches.

tim815 - August 2, 2009
Well Fox is at 3rd...
So Lou really has no choice, unless Baker started at 3rd.
CubsBullsBears - August 2, 2009
Baker looked alright at 3rd last night
Maybe that happens later when Fox gets moved to Catcher for Hill to get an inning or two off…

Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
in peoria's game
DJ LeMahieu rips a two run triple, then gets singled in. chiefs lead 3-1.
tim815 - August 2, 2009
looks like a pretty good draft class this year.
lexmarklover - August 2, 2009
I can't wait for LeMahieu.
If he hits like I think he can, it would be nice to have him at short and put Theriot at 2nd.
Devin B - August 2, 2009
i like that we will soon have options.
i hope we know which ones to keep and which ones to deal.
tim815 - August 2, 2009

El Hombre is slumping...
.195/.313/.244/.556 in his last 10 games, and (I believe) he’s 0-2 today, both at bats with runners on base.
Unfortunately, Holliday has a 1700 (!!!) OPS during that same timeframe.
kanderber - August 2, 2009
thats jesus for you
jesus christos - August 2, 2009
1.700.
thats rediculous.
I want a 1700 ops hitter.
Devin B - August 2, 2009
It's insane.
His SLG during that timeframe is higher than any of our player’s OPS.
Oh, and of course Julio Lugo has an OPS over 1000 since putting on the Cardinals uniform.
kanderber - August 2, 2009
Yep.
Definately can’t keep up that pace.
Devin B - August 2, 2009
His BAbip over the last 7 days is .714.
I don’t think that’s gonna last.
dtpollitt - August 2, 2009
Thirsty Thurston is up
lexmarklover - August 2, 2009

And not for sentimental reasons. We need a great utility guy.
slcathena - August 2, 2009
true
with all due respect to soto, i just like molina more
burncruisin - August 2, 2009
There's no crime in that, Yadi's the best defensive catcher there is in my opinion.
I’m not sold on his offense being as good as it has been this year, but he’s a great player to have regardless. Wonder how he’d react catching Theodore? LOL
Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
somebody else said theodore would run him over in the parking lot
so we’d have to have him stay home every 5 days and have theodore in the park only on days he’s starting
burncruisin - August 2, 2009

tim815 - August 2, 2009
Not a good idea
Ted Lilly would run over him in the parking lot.

I would really love for them to eat their words.

They always do.
Hrabosky is worse…thankfully he didn’t broadcast today but Horton is a complete idiot. It’s always a complete smoochfest listening to these clowns…objective? what’s that?

Sandberg's evil twin - August 2, 2009
why is DirecTV saying the Cubs/marlins is blacked out on CSN (665-HD)?
LAcarl519 - August 2, 2009

Yep

Hey, if anyone was on the game threads last night and noticed the double posting of my flag,
I will post it only once today, when we win!
P.S.: That was possibly my most embarrassing moment on this blog (when it posted the first time). I was a darker shade of red than a ripe tomato, I saw my reflection in a mirror.

you know it's bad luck to load that thing up before the game is final....
LT - August 2, 2009
I know.
I also have trouble putting it together when we win, and everyone here is saying “Cubs win!”

I noticed that ...can understand why you got hesitant though.
No worries Vermont, it turned out fine and it was an honest mistake. Sure was nice seeing you post Milton later

Thanks.
I believe The Riot just tripled. Let’s head on over to the first pitch thread!
See you there!
