Bleed Cubbie Blue

Take A Siesta, Then Watch The Game Today: Cubs vs. Marlins Preview, Sunday 8/2, 4:05 CT

Last year, the Cubs played a mid-August series at Florida in which the Sunday game had a blast-furnace starting time of 1:35 Eastern time.

This year, the Marlins appear to have come to their senses, starting most of their Sunday games (until September) at 5:05 Eastern time, including today. Given the typical south Florida weather forecast for this time of year:

Today: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 101. East wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 10%.

Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 82. East wind between 6 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 10%.

... that's probably a good idea. (A "low" of 82? It's hardly gotten above 82 in Chicago all summer!)

Tom Gorzelanny, scheduled to start Tuesday vs. the Reds in Cincinnati, is on something of a short leash:

After that, All-Star Ted Lilly is due to return from the disabled list, and unless Carlos Zambrano's stiff lower back is a lingering problem, that would seem to leave no room for Gorzelanny in the rotation.

"We'll see," manager Lou Piniella said. "Right now we've got him scheduled for three starts, and we'll go from there."

For his part, Gorzelanny, who grew up a White Sox fan in the south suburbs, is leaving that all behind:

"But now I'm a diehard Cubs fan," he said. "Everybody [in the family] is. Everybody was extremely excited to hear about it. To come back home and play for the Cubs, it's a good feeling."

Gorzelanny, who will wear No. 22, threw a bullpen session and is slated to make his Cubs debut Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Kevin Hart left the Cubs on an up note wearing that uniform number. Let's hope Gorzelanny does it proud.

Ricky Nolasco's first nine starts this year -- after having what looked like a breakout year in 2008 -- were horrendous. He had a 9.07 ERA and had given up eight runs in consecutive starts without getting out of the fourth inning in either one. The Marlins sent him to Triple-A for two weeks and he appears to have straightened things out; since his return he is 5-2, 2.71 in 10 starts with 73 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 66.1 innings. One of his early-season losses was to the Cubs May 3 at Wrigley Field; Mike Fontenot and Derrek Lee homered off him in that game.

Ryan Dempster is a long-ago Marlin, though he left there in a trade seven years ago. He is 2-1, 2.57 vs. the Marlins in his career, though only two of those appearances are starts, both of them in 2008; in his last appearance at Whatever-It's-Called-Now Stadium on August 17, 2008, he struck out 10 Marlins in 6.1 innings and the Cubs breezed to a 9-2 win. The only current Marlin who has homered off Dempster is Nick Johnson.

TV is cable-only again today, CSN Chicago and FSN Florida. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

CALL YOUR NEIGHBORS, CALL YOUR KIDS, CALL YOUR PARENTS, CALL YOUR TEACHERS, CALL YOUR PETS

Astros up 1-0!!!!!

Shhh. Don't wake them up!
After 6 it's still 1 to nuthin'
im ashamed to admit i laughed at that
is it any cooler at 5PM then 1PM

in Florida in August?

no but

the sun angle is lower… and look out, warm weather back to the chicao next weekend.

does the uniform still

come with instructions on the towel toss?

Yuck lineup

cst_cubs No Rami, no Fuky, no Bradley. Lineup vs. Nolasco: fuld, riot, lee, fox, hoffp, sori, font, hill, demp.

what's yucky about that lineup?

The only thing i hate about it is hoffpauir.

its lou's "i give up"

lineup.

I don't know

A long game in the heat – sit your regulars and give them a breather.

I'd agree

Plus it’s basically a night game, with travel right afterward. I have no problem with giving these guys a break.

Agree

Add to that 2 off days this month. He’s gotta rest ’em sometime and after a four hour game with more humidity tonight to deal with, seems to me what he needed to do.

Perhaps Lou is "in heat"...
In that humidity, given his arm was hit and he already is recovering from his shoulder separation,

They needed to give Rami the day off. I’m not quite sure why Bradley and Dome were, you’d always like to give your regs days off with the humidity there though. Let’s hope Fuld and Fox make the most of it! Could be Fuld’s speed gets him to some flyballs Dome wouldn’t as well. I’d sure like seeing Hoff make the most of a rare start for him as well, he hasn’t seemed to deal with the lack of playing time well.

reds 3 rockies 3

nix 3r hr

Any word on the status of Rami?

I’m sure he’s day to day, but there was still a lot of confusion as to why he came out last night… I will say that bruise on his arm looked pretty bad in HD… hopefully it’s just sore and there isn’t any subdermal damage.

I didn't see any bruise
Looked pretty pronounced on my TV

Must be that 1080p working over time ;-)

i was more worried with how out of it he looked
Any updates on Aramis?

Looks like he’s out of the lineup, hopefully it’s just a precautionary day off.

+1

After a 4 hour game in that humidity and getting hit coming back from the shoulder separation he needed it. Got my fingers crossed that’s all it is.

Bud Norris, steppin up!!!!
the cards dont have very many hits
interesting
way to go bud!

1-0 to the 6th

not many = 0
didnt want to jynx it
soz

=0 is a face like :)

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
"I'm only sleeping..."

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

No Extra Innings

Apparently us out of market folks don’t get to watch this one due to the silly start time overlapping with ESPN’s black out rights. Does starting it at 5 instead of 4 really make that big a difference? Now I can’t watch my Cubbies! Bleh! :p

I'm pissed too, the cutoff to protect ESPN's games is way too early.
Yep

Same with the early blackout of noon games for a 3pm Fox start….. I guess they use a cutoff of any game starting w/in 3 hours….

I'd like a win

in 9 innings tonight please. Demp, bring your “A” game.

After using 7 pitchers last night

I think not only the fans but the pen and Lou are praying for that too…

How about a win in 5 innings?
Prior wore #22 as well, didn't he?

I was actually looking at his game logs from ‘03 earlier today. It’s insane how good he was that year.

dusty, dusty, dusty, you ruined a good thing.
Marquis

has the potential of becoming the first NL pitcher to get 13 wins f the Rockies hold on.

james shields has a no no going
so does bud not buddy.
14-6 red sox

in the 4th

a scrimage in pads? how did Brady do?
blum you hit the cubs so you better hit those cards.
booooo

strike out

stains
Where are y'all watching this game? Is it on free TV?
i'm gamecasting it.
ditto
Thanks. I just did bunch of "channel not purchased" messages looking for it.
if your cable provider has KWKB

the StL WB channel, they have all of the cardinals’ sunday games.

no no gone
God broken up by the pitcher!

Crazy game sometimes, Volstad and now this…

Ricky Nolasco scares me naut.

He’s a career average pitcher.

Then again, so is Ryan Dempster.

Bud's no no is gone as well
wainright with a hit
he ruins all the fun, doesnt he
Least Schu flied out after
great. a walk to rasmus

now alberts up

i wonder

how many people are at the pirates nationals game at pnc today

that is a game in need of a promotion: Ronny Cedeno slide stopper?
Norris in trouble after walking rasmus. first n second one out and Albert Pujols up.
welcome to the big leauges kid have fun. and if your lucky enough to get alber out. Holliday is on deck.
Damn walked Rasmus, how bout a nice ground ball right at someone here...
come on buddy. rack him up right here.
pujols pops out the 2-0 pitch. two outs. man that is a pitch albert normally kills.
Pujols pops out to the pitcher's mound, 2 down.
On a fastball right down the middle...
Pujois Pops Up
not out of woods yet. Holliday has been better hitter since trade.
now if he can just get the cards lord and savior
I'd consider walking Holliday...Pujols is in a slump but Holliday's on fire.
0-2 on Holliday

make that a strike out

Holliday behind 0-2 and norris strikes him out on 3 pitches.
With the no-no gone maybe it will help Norris relax.
hopefully ......
whatever happens

he’s done a better job than the rest of the Astros staff combined

Pudge gets on in infield single. come on stros get your pitcher some runs.
how bout some insurance here
4 of the astros 7 hits have been infield singles
Bottom of the order, getting some runs here would be sweet
Where exactly is the line up today

I don’t see it listed yet ?

look up at allie's comment
Up posted by Allie...

fuld, riot, lee, fox, hoffp, sori, font, hill, demp

Resting Dome, Rammy, and Bradley after the 4 hour game.
Great Fuld gets a start AND I CAN'T SEE IT.
ESPN are clowns...I'm sure pissed, the cutoff is wayyyy too early.
hill starting

what a shock

Well Fox is at 3rd...

So Lou really has no choice, unless Baker started at 3rd.

Baker looked alright at 3rd last night

Maybe that happens later when Fox gets moved to Catcher for Hill to get an inning or two off…

2-0 Astros a little two out rbi magic by michael bourn.
RBI single: 2-0 Astros
Go Astros (for a change)
love those guys

valverde, pence, oswalt.

but for today only.

Bud Norris is my favorite pticher today.
Don't get too excited

These things have not ended well lately.

So far...

…let’s hope Demp makes a case for that honor

meh Matsui swings at a low pitch and pops it up
Bottom of the order insurance run was nice though.
in peoria's game

DJ LeMahieu rips a two run triple, then gets singled in. chiefs lead 3-1.

looks like a pretty good draft class this year.
I can't wait for LeMahieu.

If he hits like I think he can, it would be nice to have him at short and put Theriot at 2nd.

i like that we will soon have options.

i hope we know which ones to keep and which ones to deal.

Norris with 73 pitches so far in the 7th...love it today at least.
DP right here.
or a strike out 0-2
Dammit, after walking DeRo Yadi hits a single ..1st and 3rd one out.
K

one more buddy

El Hombre is slumping...

.195/.313/.244/.556 in his last 10 games, and (I believe) he’s 0-2 today, both at bats with runners on base.

Unfortunately, Holliday has a 1700 (!!!) OPS during that same timeframe.

Unfortunately, Holliday has a 1700 (!!!) OPS during that same timeframe.

thats jesus for you

1.700.

thats rediculous.

I want a 1700 ops hitter.

It's insane.

His SLG during that timeframe is higher than any of our player’s OPS.

Oh, and of course Julio Lugo has an OPS over 1000 since putting on the Cardinals uniform.

Yep.

Definately can’t keep up that pace.

His BAbip over the last 7 days is .714.

I don’t think that’s gonna last.

Thirsty Thurston is up
Lol

Tony chose Thurston over Ludwick.

Wow they pulled Waino for a ph...at least he's out of the game now.
Brett Jackson hit really well at Boise.
Geez 3 pitches well outside

Doesn’t he know how bad Thurston is?

another ump with an ego
K!
that bad 3-0 call seemed to make him chase everything low
how bout more insurance

with the cards big bats comin up next

Stay Thirsty my friend Thursty..
Cardinals behind bars...

not the kind of bar TLR had in mind
Oh come on...he was just tired :)

They played the tape of him being pulled over in st. louis, was hilarious hearing him slur his words obviously drunk.

catch up guys later! GO CUBS!
tejada gets drilled
in the hand

looks painful!!

ASTROS SHOULD RETALIATE
Don't do that with my mouth full!

How bout drilling Holliday?

YOU CANT HURT JESUS CHRIST
Blum the Cub killer up
not a cardinal killer unfortunately
Yep, Lee hit a weak fly ball like nothing at Wrigley too.
wow look at wesley rights picture on gameday
drew sutton blows
one down

kaLIL flies out

uh oh

sampson is pitching

Rockies are winning now.

2 out rbi triple.

Followed by a

2 out rbi single. 6-4 rockies.

man the reds suck
strike 'em out, throw 'em out,

nice work pujols! going to the ninth in the stl

pujols fans, strike em out throw em out
pujols goes down

swinging!

3 more outs!
Woo HOO! Strike em out, throw em out! SIDDOWN Fat Albert!

Just missed drilling him after Tejada was hit…we need revenge! (good they didnt there though with Holliday on deck)

lots of runs in baltimore

16-9 in the 6th

yeah bud norris!
rockies 6 reds 4

final

and i have a feeling

rockies and giants scores will end up being more important

That's an entirely reasonable feeling.
but one i dont think will come true

this team still has not played its best baseball yet.

come on jose valverde!
Somebody must have bought the Astros this...

lol joe morgan
in play out(s)
uh oh

hgh walks…you know who batting

DP pretty pretty please
cardinals announcers just said this was

norris’ first career start. that makes it quite a bit more impressive.

in play out(s)!
please be 2
fly out to center for DeRo
if the cubs could have any cardinal except for pujols

i would take yadi molina in a heartbeat

more than holiday?
or dero
DeRo for me.

And not for sentimental reasons. We need a great utility guy.

true

with all due respect to soto, i just like molina more

There's no crime in that, Yadi's the best defensive catcher there is in my opinion.

I’m not sold on his offense being as good as it has been this year, but he’s a great player to have regardless. Wonder how he’d react catching Theodore? LOL

somebody else said theodore would run him over in the parking lot

so we’d have to have him stay home every 5 days and have theodore in the park only on days he’s starting

or carpenter?
Not a good idea

Ted Lilly would run over him in the parking lot.

nice.

i forgot about that.

The cards announcers are going on and on about how "everything is going perfect"

I would really love for them to eat their words.

They always do.

Hrabosky is worse…thankfully he didn’t broadcast today but Horton is a complete idiot. It’s always a complete smoochfest listening to these clowns…objective? what’s that?

yes

hes a young, stud catcher

sorry, reply to ndcubs
in play out(s)!!!!!!!!!
Red birds lose!
Cards Lose!
Good - MLB-TV hasn't caught up yet...
this Bud's for lose!

now we need Dempster to have his A game today

i'd settle for a B+ game

i think

FIRST PLACE chicago cubs

for the time being

bud norris

if you want about thirty free beers tonight, visit wrigleyville

i love it when the cardinals lose.
It was also good to see Yadi ground out weakly there ...

After taking 5 hours out of the box trying to throw off Valverde’s concentration…waving his arms around like an injured goose…wonder if "the best fans in baseball "saw norris coming?

why is DirecTV saying the Cubs/marlins is blacked out on CSN (665-HD)?
The starting time is too late

runs into ESPN’s exclusive Sunday night window I believe.

that is BS...thanks Selig
Yep

we pay lots for EI and get way too many blackouts….

I'll say it completely

That’s bullshit.

Hey, if anyone was on the game threads last night and noticed the double posting of my flag,

I will post it only once today, when we win!

P.S.: That was possibly my most embarrassing moment on this blog (when it posted the first time). I was a darker shade of red than a ripe tomato, I saw my reflection in a mirror.

you know it's bad luck to load that thing up before the game is final....
I know.

I also have trouble putting it together when we win, and everyone here is saying “Cubs win!”

I noticed that ...can understand why you got hesitant though.

No worries Vermont, it turned out fine and it was an honest mistake. Sure was nice seeing you post Milton later

Thanks.

I believe The Riot just tripled. Let’s head on over to the first pitch thread!

See you there!
