I cannot imagine Dusty Baker, who signed a three-year contract to manage the Reds before 2008, will finish out the last year of that deal in 2010. The Reds have appeared to regress since last year -- they are currently on pace to lose 92 games -- and the game seems to have passed Dusty by, even more so than it did during his last year as Cubs manager. There have been rumors that Tony LaRussa will leave the Cardinals after this year and join his former GM, Walt Jocketty, who is now in charge of the Reds.
Many people blame Dusty for the troubles Kerry Wood and Mark Prior had during his tenure. There's something to that, though other factors were involved, too. But Dusty's overuse of Aaron Harang -- who has thrown 110 or more pitches 19 times since Baker began managing the Reds -- is unconscionable.
Meanwhile, Lou might have a new relief pitcher in this series:
The positive news the Cubs received Sunday on the two key players who left Saturday's game with minor injuries could pay quick dividends this week in Cincinnati, including the intriguing -- if remote -- possibility that Carlos Zambrano could pitch out of the bullpen for the first time in seven years.
Even if Zambrano didn't exactly embrace the idea.
Manager Lou Piniella raised that possibility for the second consecutive night after another rough finish for a bullpen that has been worked hard lately -- in large part because of Zambrano's early exit Saturday because of lower- back stiffness.
"He's got till Friday," Piniella said of Zambrano's anticipated fitness for his next scheduled start, "unless we put him in the bullpen for a couple of days. We might need him there in Cincinnati."
Said Zambrano, when told of Piniella's comments: "I'm not a reliever."
Oh, come on, Z. Take one for the team. For one thing... how about being a closer for a day? Tonight?
Lineup via Twittermyer:
Fukudome, cf; Theriot, ss; Lee, 1b; Ramirez, 3b; Bradley, rf; Soriano, lf; Fontenot, 2b; Hill, c; Wells, p
This will be Koyie Hill's 24th consecutive start. He has caught all but six innings in those 24 games. I checked the 1968 game logs for Randy Hundley, who caught 160 games (156 starts) of the 163 (one tie) played that year. He started the first 26 games, then got a day off. Then he started 40 in a row (and appeared in the game he didn't start). Following ten more in a row, Hundley sat for a game -- the second game of a doubleheader, so he didn't get the entire day off. Then he made 50 more consecutive starts, before getting another second-game-of-a DH off -- and he appeared in that game. It was 16 more starts before he finally got another day off, but he also appeared in that game, but for only one inning -- most of a day off. Then he caught the final 17 games of the season, all but five innings. Why not those five innings? He was ejected for arguing a call.
So if you think Hill can't handle this, just look back 41 years. (No wonder Hundley's knees went.)

| Today's Starting Pitchers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Today's game is a pitching rematch from July 24, ten days ago at Wrigley Field. Both starters pitched reasonably well, but Dusty left Harang in for 119 pitches and the Cubs eventually put the game away vs. the Cincinnati bullpen. (Don't look at Kevin Gregg's line from that game, it will just raise your blood pressure.)
Aramis Ramirez and Mike Fontenot homered off Harang on July 24; A-Ram is the Cubs' best hitter against him, lifetime .326/.347/.652 with 4 HR in 46 AB, and he is expected to play tonight. Derrek Lee has also homered 5 times off Harang in 52 career AB.
Randy Wells threw six good innings against the Reds on July 24; his only real mistake was giving up a three-run homer to Harang, a career .090 hitter. I trust that won't happen again. This is the Cubs' 104th game and Wells has thrown 95 innings; if Wells throws a complete game (unlikely, of course), he will then show up in the qualified league leaders list for ERA. More likely, he'll show up there after his next start.
It's your lucky day, outside-of-Chicago Cubs fans. Normally, you wouldn't get to see WCIU games -- but ESPN has picked up tonight's game for national coverage. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I will say this, it's GREAT to be back
Been gone since the 24th because the wedding was on the 25th, but everything went perfect. There were some fears about me using Go Cubs Go for my wedding party’s entrance, but the Cubs took care of business, won their game, and so us coming into the reception to Go Cubs Go worked out perfectly. Most of the people were singing it. I’ve kept up here and there while on the honeymoon, but it’s going to be cool to actually get to watch a game and be a part of a chat again.
Craig in South Bend - August 3, 2009
congratulations!

Congrats!
Did you happen to watch the video of the dancing wedding party on You Tube? Any chance you’ll post your entrance?
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
Funny, I know people in that video.
N Oakley - August 3, 2009
it was like the scene out
of Hitch….
cozmotaylor123 - August 3, 2009
I still have yet to see this
but a lot of the people that attended mentioned it. Pictures ran late, so the wife and myself arrive to the reception late, and I was handed a glass of beer, and she was given a glass a wine, and then we were ushered in to Go Cubs Go. Our videographer may not have been there for that (he did some professional work for our ceremony, but had to split before the reception, or just after)…but someone may have captured it on their digital camera. If I can get a hold of it, I’ll probably throw it up on youtube. Honestly, it was really, really cool to hear everyone singing that, and it was such an awesome, small part of a tremendous day. If it was all on video, it would be may favorite movie ever.

Congrats Craig!

Does anyone have a link
to Brandon Philips saying how the Reds are a better team top to bottom than the Cubs this year? It looks like the Cinci paper took that article down, but maybe I just can’t find it.
DGU - August 3, 2009
Dunno if this is exactly
what you are referring to or not. But near the end of the article Phillips is quoted as saying the Reds are a better team.
DamonBerryhillsMitt - August 3, 2009
My respect for Koyie Hill grew over the weekend
with the way he handled the situation with the over-excited closer of the Marlins. Koyie handled himself with total professionalism by leaving everything on the field and not escalating things in the paper.
The Marlins (including their marketing staff) could learn a few things from Koyie.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
I think Hill comes out miles ahead in the class dept. in that situation.
Now, what did I miss about the Florida Marlins’ marketing staff? Were they taking pot-shots?
Blue W - August 3, 2009
They apparently
trotted a goat on to the field between innings.

Let's get em boys!
Colorado Cubbies Fan - August 3, 2009
Add Edison Volques
to Dusty’s pitcher graveyard. The kid with an incredible arm is supposed to miss a year after having Tommy John surgery yesterday,
DC Cubbie - August 3, 2009
sorry its actually Edinson Volquez
DC Cubbie - August 3, 2009
Even worse
Allie - August 3, 2009
Guess that trade isn't looking good this year for either team,
Both Hamilton and Volquez have been hurt for much of the year.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
yikes...well he should be doing towel drills within a year
DC Cubbie - August 3, 2009
Another Baker pitcher bites the Dust[y]
DTJchris - August 3, 2009
Volquez through 110 or more pitches
15 times since Dusty (if my count is correct..it may be more)
Neifi Puppy - August 3, 2009
And the Reds have had a pretty good bullpen
the last couple of years so Dusty can’t use that as an excuse.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
I had him on my fantasy team but gave up on him ever coming back about a month ago.

Of course Z
couldn’t just say, “if they need me to pitch from the pen, not a problem.” He gets old.
I hadn’t heard that LaRussa rumor, can’t we get him out of this division? Wells is quickly becoming one of my favorite Cubs to watch pitch. Him and the bulldog, Ted Lilly
slocs55 - August 3, 2009
I almost created a fan shot about this just to give the Zambrano apologists something to do this afternoon
Shanghai Badger - August 3, 2009
IIRC I think Mssr. Al said that we would be in trouble if Koyie Hill started more than 40 games
Al do you recall saying this before the year began?
Ivy Walls - August 3, 2009
You usually are in trouble if
you lose your all star catcher for a significant stretch of time.
Allie - August 3, 2009
It also isn't good when your all star catcher finally came around
right before he went on the DL.
Craig in South Bend - August 3, 2009
Haven't we been in trouble this year anyway?
Most of us thought we’d be up by 5 games by now . . .
madcow256 - August 3, 2009
Maybe.
Apparently, I was wrong. Hill has done a good job behind the plate and it appears we can live with his .200 average.
Al Yellon - August 3, 2009
Of course Z said he wasn't a reliever
He’s too busy practicing his swings.

drewishdrewid - August 3, 2009
If a tree fell in the woods but there was no-one there...
chilango2 - August 3, 2009
Maybe he could pinch-hit, then stay in to pitch.
Al Yellon - August 3, 2009
The last time I saw this was in the NLDS in 2004
during the 18 inning game the Astros and Braves played. Roger Clemens pinch hit before he came in to pitch.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
here's hoping they can get things going tonight.
with the cardinals sitting at home this is one of those “we can make up ground without them doing anything” nights.
mjk83 - August 3, 2009
might be a stupid question
but i thought i heard soto was going to be back first week of august? any word?
BelieveinBlue2314 - August 3, 2009
He's rehabbing in TN
hopefully back soon.

aw, man, you had to say Soto was rehabbin.
N Oakley - August 3, 2009
They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said "no, no, no"!
Blue W - August 3, 2009
He's starting a rehab with AA Tennessee today.
Soto is scheduled to re-join the Cubs Friday in Colorado.

Perhaps I’d be more sympathetic if he wasn’t tremendously out of shape and sucking it up big time this season. Sadly, he’s both, and it’s nobody’s fault but his own.
ZachenFoot - August 3, 2009
agree
Cubz24 - August 3, 2009
...
I think he was insulting cowsarecool. I think the appropriate response is actually under “actions” though.
Craig in South Bend - August 3, 2009
I saw it
as more of a comment towards Soto. And if it was toward’s Soto then I think it’s bloody hilarious.
ZachenFoot - August 3, 2009
Considering he asked cows if he "struck a nerve"

And you could be right
I could’ve just misunderstood, and if I did, then all I can say is “my bad.”

Soto's song:
I don’t smoke marihuana, I don’t take LSD,
‘Cos I’m a country boy from Nashville, with my boots up to my knees
I like to sit around and be lazy,
I like to drink a lot of beer
‘Cos I’m a country boy from Nashville,
with my hair cut to my ears
I’d like to cut the balls of a long-haired hippy, and tie them up to a tree
‘Cos I’m a country boy from Nashville, that’s Nashville, Tennessee
Well I’m a country boy from Nashville, Tennessee,
don’t f**k with me
chilango2 - August 3, 2009

Don't give a rip
When a person starts seeking adoration on an anonymous message board then it is time to check in for professional help and answer the “get a life” ads in the newspaper.
The majority take this blog as if it were life and death and the debate centered on a cure for cancer.
BLou - August 3, 2009
Will you by my friend, BLou?
DamonBerryhillsMitt - August 3, 2009
No
I don’t seek friendships via a message board. Rather I engage in a full and enriched life that includes wife, daughter, family, friends, stimulating physical activity, cultural endeavor, etc. Too many of you seemingly try to carve out a life on BCB. That’s sad. I feel badly for you and hope that someday you see the light, both literally and figuratively. Put down the 128 ounce package of sour creme potato chips, lift your ass out of the computer chair and go outside and get some sun. Heck, you might even have some human contact !!!

cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
Eye roll
don’t wrench your shoulder patting yourself on the back there bud… the DL is full.
Allie - August 3, 2009
This is quite funny coming from someone
who has been kicked off this message board, not once, but twice and still feels the need to come back. I think you lead a sad, lonely, miserable life and you come on here to try and make other people feel the same way you do. Its almost like you need to come here, hence being kicked off twice and still coming back.
It’s quite sad really.
DTJchris - August 3, 2009
More than twice, actually.
It’d be nice if he’d treat everyone here the way he claims he treats his family. Odd that he can do that in real life, but not here.
Al Yellon - August 3, 2009
So, Blou posts here and has enriched life, but the rest of us don't by definition?
Good logic.

cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
Zambrano...
…really frustrates the hell out of me, and he has since he was given that contract in August of 2007.
He’s probably my least favorite pitcher on the staff. Too inconsistent for $18 mil. a year, doesn’t travel with the team, gets hurt swinging the bat which we all know he’s NOT getting paid to do, and can’t control himself despite being 28 years old now (which should be a player’s prime, and he seems to be past it already). Now he won’t take one for the team and pitch out of the bullpen if we need him to (and we very well might)?
Get over yourself, Z. It’s not funny anymore. In the end though, Lou calls the shots, and I hope he decides to throw Z out there in the pen if he really needs an extra guy. That’s such BS on Z’s part.
ZachenFoot - August 3, 2009
+10 Yeah I too am getting sick and tired of his childish act...hes def not worth the money were paying him to be the ace of the staff

Allie - August 3, 2009
Phil Rogers would like to hire you STAT!
chilango2 - August 3, 2009
What are you, a BLou impersonator?
Speaking the unvarnished truth in such nature will get you labeled a member of my flock. Careful now. All the fat guys who are offended by my Geovany Soto schtick will start attacking you.
Zambrano is a gifted pitcher with a 10 cent head. He is who we think he is in the parlance of Dennis Green. Our ace is Rich Harden.
BLou - August 3, 2009
Our ace has a 5 ERA and two pitches?
No wonder we’re only going to win 79 games!
Allie - August 3, 2009
BLou impersonators?
Worf - August 3, 2009
Hey now
Your damned close. You’re act is more Worf the insult dog, but I give you credit for not wearing rose-colored glasses and pissing all over the Luvable Loser mentality that so many embrace on this blog.

Well, then i HOPE he isn't.

AndrewJStone - August 3, 2009
Here's what I don't get about your posts:
What is the purpose of your posts?
Are you trying to persuade people to your point of view or are you just making the most provocative and outrageous posts you can think of?
Hint: Insulting people is not the best way to persuade people to your point of view.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
If Rich Harden is our ace
this team really is screwed
nji232 - August 3, 2009
Haha, nah.
I just get tired of the guy sometimes. I always feel that everything in baseball is said for a reason and is never REALLY in jest. I’m just of the upbringing of Cub fans where you expect the best out of who’s labelled “the best,” and if we’re not getting that as I don’t think we are with Zambrano (the guy always labelled as our “ace”), then why should I give the guy the benefit of the doubt?
Ever since Z made the comment about fans booing him after that Labor Day game against LA two seasons ago, and also recent antics and things that have come out of his mouth throughout 2009, I have a hard time viewing his comment as a joke.
ZachenFoot - August 3, 2009
All right.
You don’t speak the unvarnished truth, BLou. You spout opinions and label them facts. Then you insult and demean anyone who dares to disagree.
Enough with the martyred visionary act. It’s beneath you.

Shanghai Badger - August 3, 2009
You're right, somewhat.
I think it’s a little bit much to get too worked up over a relatively offhand remark by Lou and an even more offhand response by Big Z.
Z is consistently good but not great, so you’re right in that he probably doesn’t deserve the 18 mil/year, but if you need to feel good about him being on the team, check out the roll he was on for the last two months.
mykalmorgan - August 3, 2009
When Soto returns
I hope our Lou considers this batting order: Fukudome, Bradley, Lee, ARam, Soto, Soriano, Fontenot, Theriot, P.
CaliCub - August 3, 2009
He probably wouldn't consider that
on days when Milton is hitting from the left side.
madcow256 - August 3, 2009
I've thought about that too
but I’ve come to agree with Lou on Bradley hitting behind lee and Aram. It does break up the 4 RH in a row.
KaliCub - August 3, 2009
The LH/RH stuff strikes me as a bit irrelevant
IMO it’s more important to put your highest OBP guys in front of your highest OPS guys than to worry about making sure the lineup isn’t “too righty”.
CaliCub - August 3, 2009
How to tell its been 2 rough games in a row
there is Blou everywhere on the board with lineup talk and how much Zambrano needs a shrink.
Ugh!
Allie - August 3, 2009
And you guys thought I was so negative...
Cubz24 - August 3, 2009
It's kind of BLOU's claim to fame on BCB.
cowsarecool220 - August 3, 2009
yeah seems to be
Cubz24 - August 3, 2009
So right Allie - here's a question I guarantee BLou won't respond to:
Why does BLou only post when the Cubs stumble, and never posts when they are playing well? The world wonders…
BleedsbluinMI - August 3, 2009
the silence is deafening
BleedsbluinMI - August 3, 2009
Ahh, the other magic of a W flag.
The silence.

Blue W - August 3, 2009
yeah
can’t figure out what is more annoying those complaining about ESPN’s coverage… or ESPN’s coverage?
I think the complaining is worse. They really aren’t that bad.
Allie - August 3, 2009
They really aren't
that bad. Except for Joe Morgan. Great player, terrible analyst.
mykalmorgan - August 3, 2009
Even Morgan hasn't been that horrible lately
He and Phillips had a good discussion on the mechanics of hitting. And it was actually interesting.
Allie - August 3, 2009
He does know about hitting.
And consistency. That’s the thing about baseball. You need to be consistent in order to win games consistently. But at the end of the game, all that really matters is which team scored more runs. Consistency.
mykalmorgan - August 3, 2009
I think Morgan does know what he's talking about sometimes
The problem is he thinks he knows what he’s talking about ALL the time.
BleedsbluinMI - August 3, 2009
Eh
True.
He’s not a very good announcer, but he’s doesn’t warn all the hand wringing, IMO.
Allie - August 3, 2009
I'd think he'd do much better in the studio....
carmen_fanzone - August 3, 2009

DamonBerryhillsMitt - August 3, 2009
Was it not Randy Wells that pitched are last nationally televised game on ESPN?
If I recall correctly, he didn’t pitch that well. Here’s to hoping we pick up a win tonight.
aznsensation - August 3, 2009
While it may be fashionable to blame Dusty for all the ills of the world, I
did a little research. Al mentioned that Dusty was abusing Harang with the number of 110 pitch outings. i decided to compare a few starting pitchers in the league and see how this stat compared. I also checked last year’s pitches/start to see if Dusty’s guys were staying in games much longer than the other starters. Here are the results.
Pitcher———110-pitch outings 2009——pitches/start 2008
D. Haren——————-9———————————————101.1
Lincicome—————11——————————————-111.5
Cain—————————7———————————————-109.2
Billingsly——————11——————————————-103.8
Santana———————6———————————————105.8
Sabathia——————10———————————————108.9
Burnett———————-10——————————————-107.3
Harang———————-8———————————————-101.5
Arroyo————————-7———————————————-101
Cueto————————-4————————————————97.9
Owings———————-0————————————————97.3
Volquez———————-1————————————————105.8
Lest you feel these numbers are cherry-picked, they are not. I just picked pitchers that I knew of and looked at their stats.
I realize that Dusty’s mistreatment of pitchers is the stuff of urban legend, but these numbers tell a different story. I am not saying that he doesn’t overuse his pitchers, only that the talk on this blog seems to be a bit overblown. Bend the numbers any way you want, but facts are facts.
willie mays hayes' gloves - August 3, 2009
Oh man...
…what are you trying to say, Dusty Baker isn’t the devil reincarnated?!
cubswynn - August 3, 2009
I think problems with Arroyo and Harang come from before the time of Dusty
and at least with Owings he hasn’t been good enough to throw 100 pitches. I know you want to defend Dusty, and that’s, well, not commendable exactly, but it sure is a challenge. The facts are this: Dusty has said a few colosally stupid things while managing the Cubs and has shown a propensity to fall in love with players who don’t necessarily warrant his continued devotion (Corey Patterson? Jerry Hairston Jr.?). There’s evidence on both sides of the pitch count debate with him, and, from where I sit and from what I’ve read, he’s probably more guilty than most managers of pitcher abuse.
mykalmorgan - August 3, 2009
Pitch Count
is also a factor of how well someone pitches. Its no coincidence most guys on your comparison list are aces who pitch deep into games because that provides their team the best chance of winning. Its not surprising Haren, Lincicome, Santana and Cain (arguably the four best, healthy pitchers in the NL this year) all average 100+ or even 110+.
Of the Reds you listed, only Volquez is in the same league, and — surprise — he’s struggled this year with arm injuries and is about to go down for Tommie John surgery.
Orval Overall - August 3, 2009
Of course it is. A pitchers that stinks is not going to be around long enough
to throw 110 pitches. My only point is that if Dusty were as guilty as he has been made out to be on this blog, his pitchers numbers would be way out of line with others. Volquez has been pitching in major league basball since 2005. 105 pitches per game avaerage is not abuse based on others with the same amount of win totals. It hard to believe that one year at that pitch total would cause an injury to the point of needing TJS. I uspect abuse prior to last year. Linicome is in his third year and is averaging 111 pitches per start. Is that abuse. My only point is that the numbers don’t suggest treatment way out of line with the rest of the league.
willie mays hayes' gloves - August 3, 2009
You're missing the point
The Reds are TERRIBLE. They are going to finish way out of the running this year. Nevertheless, Dusty somehow has all five of his starters averaging at or near 100 pitches per game. How is that possible?
Are you telling me this awful team actually has 5 really good starters that are pitching late into games because they’re just that good, and somehow just not getting wins? Or you think perhaps he’s got his 3, 4 and 5 starters pitching their arms off when an equally effective reliever could come in to do the same thing?
Orval Overall - August 3, 2009
Have you looked at the stats from the rest of the league or are you making
this point because you feel that strongly about Dusty? Every team in the league has stats very close to the Reds. Practically every team’s top 3 starting pitchers average about 97 pitches per start. EVERY TEAM. So your argument is that 3 or 4 pitches per start is enough to ruin his pitchers? Even the lowly Padres with their inept offense have 3 pitchers that average 97+ pitches per start. It doesn’t matter how bad the team is, this stat is consistent.
willie mays hayes' gloves - August 3, 2009
Right. And he has 5.
On a team that is lousy, he uses all 5 starters like they were aces.
Orval Overall - August 4, 2009
Joe Girardi has a hand in some of that
Which I mentioned earlier as another person of interest in the pitcher abuse game.
nji232 - August 3, 2009
You also should
list the corresponding whip counts. 110 pitches in 5 innings is much different than say 8 innings.

Seeing Game in Memphis
Fox Sports South will pick up the feed from FSN Ohio for the game. It will be on Comcast digital channel 25 or basic cable channel 40 in Memphis. All Reds games are blacked out on Extra Innings in Tennessee.

Game Blacked Out On ESPN in Memphis
Because Memphis is technically in Reds territory, the game won’t be able to seen on ESPN in Tennessee. For Memphis viewers, Fox Sports South and SportSouth try to pick up the feeds from Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports Ohio for Cardinals and Reds games. The only way to see the game here on Comcast will be to watch Fox Sports South picking up the feed from Fox Sports Ohio.

Ben Gordon is on the score and ripping on Bulls management.
dakoose - August 3, 2009
what's he saying?
That they disrespected him by offering only 9M per season for the last three offseasons?
Orval Overall - August 3, 2009
Bernstein quoted
Reinsdorf as saying “Ben would have to fight for playing time with Jannero Pargo and be the fourth guard” so Ben started laughing and then went on to say that he didn’t appreciate how they handled his situation the last year or so, in which they lied to the fans about signing him being a top priority. He also didn’t understand why they waited till now to see him leave if they never wanted to resign him in the first place, as they should have gotten something in return for him. I agree with everything he said in the interview.
dakoose - August 3, 2009
Sounds like his true character is coming out.
I suspect this is why the Bulls didn’t go above and beyond to sign him. He isn’t that great of a talent to put up with this.
Apparently he never learned to be the bigger person and just move on.

Isn't it funny that one of the best lefty power hitting outfielders in the league last year
wasn’t an option for a team in dire need of a good left handed power hitting outfielder. I realize he probably wouldn’t be as good this year but his glove would be well above average in right field and his hitting would be more than adequate. It’s nuts to think he had a .937 OPS last year for us.
