Bleed Cubbie Blue

There Is, Apparently, Life After The Cubs: Cubs vs. Rockies Preview, Saturday 8/8, 7:10 CT

The Jason Marquis trade was controversial at the time it was made. Many here disliked Marquis for providing fifth-starter performance for more than fifth-starter money. There's something to that, but especially last year, Marquis did as he was asked. The deal wound up being a bad one, in my opinion, because it was made for salary reasons (in part, to afford Milton Bradley's deal) and the player acquired -- Luis Vizcaino -- turned out to be useless and was released.

Marquis, who somehow always pitched well in Coors Field, has prospered there, making the All-Star team and keeping his ERA under 4.00. He's even pitched well after the All-Star break, something he has never done before in his career. His sinker works in Denver; this is something other breaking-ball pitchers have gone to Coors with and failed.

It's time to pay back Marquis -- and the Rockies -- for this deal.

Speaking of deals, will the Cubs acquire anyone via a waiver deal this month? Jim Hendry says "maybe":

"It's hard to say," general manager Jim Hendry said of whether the Cubs will be able to add another player. "We're not in the upper echelons, but our record's good enough where we don't get first cracks at some guys. We'll see. If we find something that makes us better, we'll try."

Right now, I don't see anyone out there who would be available by waiver deal -- and who wouldn't cost a lot in terms of players or money -- who could really help the Cubs. I don't want John Smoltz -- I think he's done -- and with Ted Lilly due to return in 10 days or so, the Cubs are going to be OK for starting pitching even with Carlos Zambrano going on the disabled list, given the apparent revival of Tom Gorzelanny. Fortunately, Z's DL move is retroactive to August 2, so he will be eligible to return on the 17th, and Lilly should be back by then as well.

Jason Marquis... well, what can you say. He was the guy many here loved to hate, but he's been rejuvenated as a Rockie. He handcuffed the Cubs on April 15 at Wrigley Field and has a 3.79 ERA in nine starts at Coors Field this year. However, several Cubs used to light him up as a Cardinal -- maybe they can pick that up tonight. Derrek Lee (16-for-33, 2 doubles, 4 HR) and Aramis Ramirez (9-for-21, 2 HR) lead the hit parade.

Ryan Dempster threw very well in his last start last Sunday in Miami -- that's what we need from him tonight, the guy who pitched so well last year. He has not had much success in Coors Field -- a 15.23 ERA in seven appearances (three starts, 13 total IP), but most of that came from two horrific starts he made in 2001 and 2003, comprising six of those innings and 16 of the 22 earned runs allowed. Against players currently on the Rockies he's done much better -- a .211 BAA. Only Todd Helton has hit him well -- .389 (7-for-18) with 3 HR.

TV tonight is, for the third game in a row, cable-only, CSN Chicago and FSN Rocky Mountain. If you are outside of Bud's Idiotic Blackout Zones, you should be able to see the game on the MLB Network. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Vincent Padilla is available

Also I think Ponson
( now ducking)

A resounding "no" to Sir Sidney

Let him beat up people on Caribbean beaches for the rest of his life.

Padilla?

Attitude problems, from what I hear. Oh, and a 4.92 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. No thanks.

Don't look at me

Anyone who can’t get along with and take advise from a Maddux does not deserve to pitch in the MLB let alone for the Cubs.
Just pointing out what is out there.

CC's no-no no more

Elsbury got a hit.

Good luck Ryan.

I hope the Cubs bats are on fire tonight.

wow

is it quiet in here…

echo

echo…

yeah

slowest game thread ever?

weird.

Saturday game threads are always pretty slow
true

but yeesh.

We'll get our quota of ledge-jumpers and sunshine-pumpers

Once the game actually starts. Probably.

true

and i’ll go find dinner instead when that happens (leaning toward turkey pot pie!)…

its starting to pick up finally, though.

I had brats

Mmm…brats.

I'm having chicken
I had deep fried pork from the Mexi-hood.

To. Die. For.

I'm gonna miss Mexican food even more

Up here in the frozen North.

You're back in the frozen north?
Yup

For good this time, or something approximating it…

Good thing or bad thing?
Good thing

Until November, anyway – we’ll see how I feel then…

Well thats good

winter isn’t that bad!

Fargo?
Indeed

“Authentic Mexican” here means Taco Johns. Oh, the humanity!

BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHA

The horror. Their tater tots, or “Potato Olés” are yummy though. However, not a single cuisine in Mexico has fried potatoes…

It’s easy to fake a Mexican meal with ingredients found anywhere. If you’re interested in some ideas, let me know.

Went to high school 30 miles from the border :D

I can whip up my own stuff, it’s just that all the ingredients are canned. Canned green chile sucks dead gophers through McDonald’s soda straws.

At least Atlanta had a big enough Mexican population to support a lot of markets (and taquerias). Fargo – not so much…

Paradiso, baby!

Had an excellent meal there while in Bismarck last month. Mexican Village is another choice.

Paradiso looks like its always packed out

I may check it out on a Sunday afternoon. Kinda doubt they’ll have menudo, though.

Yuck
True story

During high school, I worked in a kitchen with a little old Mexican grandmother. She was counting the days until she could get her Social Security, but she could still crank out the food. But if you got Carmen mad, even just a little, she’d grab the biggest knife she could find, point it at your belly, and say, “I’ll take your menudo out!”

Funny every single time…

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

I never thought of “it” that way. Very clever.

This is the slowest game thread

I’ve ever been in. I’ve been in my fair share too. I look in a lot also. Very slow. It is getting better though.

Only 1:15 to game time!

And I think a lot of people are tired from all that typing in the Recap thread

I'm still shellshocked from last night

The vitriol was a bit much.

Wasn't that bad when I joined

but that wasn’t until overflow 2…

I said something like

“This is a pivotal series. I have this feeling in my stomach…” and got jumped. I’m in a frail state of mind.

I'm sorry you got jumped

that sucks.

Thanks

Super Troopers was on TV, so I watched that.

Wow, lucky I went to bed when I did.

Sounds like things got ugly in here again.

I'm glad I wasn't in here

Heck, I barely watched the game. I watched 2 innings, and got frustrated.

I couldn't watch the game

(stupid csn) so i checked gameday and saw z hadn’t started… so i logged in here.

by the time I got here, it was close enough of “over” no one was really upset anymore.

Had to work this morning at 7 AM.

Another morning shift tomorrow, so again, I won’t be on here much.

I've had the same feeling though

Especially before we left for FLA, this stretch is tough.

After this and the Philly series

We only have 10 more games against winning teams.

Unless Milwaukee and/or Houston go over .500 again.
11, actually.

3 @ St. Louis
4 @ LA Dodgers
4 @ San Francisco

And how many of the other teams

are within a game or two of .500?

12 actually

we still have that one game with the White Sox to make up at some point. Although I don’t believe a date has been set so we may not have to play it.

I agree you got jumped

and I did defend you. I hope it doesn’t happen tonight.

I <3 you sue

Thanks!

I got your back.

You’re a good guy.

Yep

we like jose! :-)

Thank you girls
I apologize

for leading the jump. If Sue says you’re a good guy, that’s good enough for me.

A victory tonight will make things at least a bit less edgy around here.

Interesting stat

Stats_MLB: The #Rockies lead #MLB with 68 quality starts this season. Four different Rockie starters have at least 12 quality starts this year.

Cubs are 2nd with 67, in fewer games.
Thanks!

I wondered where we were on the list… but wasn’t quite sure how to figure that one out.

Hopefully this doesn’t pull us into a “quality start is a bogus stat” discussion. Again.

Quality Start is a Bogus Stat is a bogus argument?
After the game...

Cubs and rocks will be tied.

We need to win today

If we can split this series and pull out 2 of 3 against Philly, I will feel good about this team.

Splitting this series

is exactly what I wanted going into it. Of course, winning the next three would be great, but winning two games in any four-game series is realistic.

Two out of three against the Phils would be nice, and it’s realistic because the Cubs are playing at home, where they’ve been exceptionally tough. I thought the Cubs-Phils series in Philly was pretty even. Phils blow out Cubs one game, Cubs do the same another game, and the third went 14 innings (or was it 15?).

I thought

13

13 it was

Good recollection.

......

Heilman and Miles for him

G ETI TDO NEJ IM

NO NOT MILES
SORRY HE'S TO VALUABLE

SORIANO DOES NOTHING, TRADE HIM!!!

omg

his face exudes confidence.

He can have whatever look on his face he wants

if he keeps hitting .310/.346/.495 while playing average defense at 2nd

I guarentee a win, and I'll tell you why.

I just moved into a new apartment, and just a few hours ago I hung my W flag in the living room.

PUT IT ON THE BOAAAAARRRDDDDDD

PUT IT ON THE BOAAAAARRRDDDDDD

never say that again

nah man, he's channeling his inner hawk. Everybody has an inner hawk.
i dont
search deep inside and you will find it. STRETCH!
Oh hell no.

That’s just wrong.

the only inner Hawk I have

finds its way into the porcelain pool every morning.

bombs away!!

....

Aw you are forgiven. :D
Why aren't

Bradley and Miles on waivers? This could be addition by subtraction

Bradley is useful in the 2 spot and great against LHP

Miles knows where Hendry buried the bodies

They probably were both on waivers.

And not claimed.

Really? Isn't that made public and we would've found out?
no they don't make it public.
at least not on purpose.
10-4

Thanks good buddy.

waiving your two big offseason acquisitions

while you’re tied for first?

GITITDONE, JIMBO!

hr to game times..... let's go! let's go! let's go!
Watching this Yankee/BoSox series

is fascinating… earlier in the year Boston was on fire and looked awesome. Now, they look like hot garbage.

thats what happens when your RF, DH, and catcher players are offensive blackholes
VMart?

Is a black hole?

varitek
I know

But catcher isn’t a black hole anymore.

true

but its hard to integrate a catcher into a staff midseason. Varitek still calls a really good game.

Brandon Backe is available
not that he's good or anything..... actually he's terrible
If the Astros cut a pitcher

You know he ain’t good…

Am I the only one who reads his name as

Back’ne?

Like this:

Woah

Just… woah.

yeah

that would be the stuff.

Oh, look!

It’s a sailboat!

holy hell
Sorry for the nightmares...

scarred me for life …. lol

anyone got a lineup yet?
yep... and you aren't gonna like it

theriot
bradley
lee
rami
fukudome
soriano
soto
miles
dempster

really?
yep

gameday says.

i really really wish i could tell a story that horrible.

what the hell is lou smoking?
Steroids?
He calls it "the reefer."
I don't know, but I think I'll pass on it.
I'm kinda hoping for you to say

August fools or something

Aaron Miles

might be the worst Jim Hendry signing ever.

I liked it when it first happened

He was always a 300+ hitter. Now, it’s terrible. Plus the fact that Lou keeps running him out there.

.300 hitter with on OBP, Power or defense
no OBP, Power or defense
He's had

A decent OBP

just from the average

a .300 hitter with no power, sub par D and didn’t walk much.

better?

hated it when it happened. continue to hate it.
hmm.

this is his career line:

.284/.324/.358/.682

Season:

.197/.233/.252/.485

The only quarrel I had with the Miles signing

was that it was for two years, not one.

At the time, me too

but now I see even the first year was a big mistake. The fact that Fontenot has stunk most of the year has only opened the door for Miles to play more.

i wish

truly i do.

this may be my least favorite lineup ever. dome was doing awesome in leadoff… riot leading off means he’s going to try to steal the second he gets on base, miles is playing…

ugh, lou. just UGH!

How long until Blanco is "healed", again?
Miles is at 2nd right?

why not Baker or even Fonte?

apparently lou felt that fukudomes .300+ BA and .400+ OBP wasnt enough for a leadoff man
well sadly he also has the 4th best SLG and ISO of the regulars (Lee, Rami, Sori)

so they could kinda use him in the middle of the order.

why mess with something thats working?
I said above it's not what I would do

but it is justifiable, unlike Miles’ being allowed to play anything but bat boy.

unlike Miles’ being allowed to play anything but bat boy.

i agree

no kidding

dome and bradley were the only ones doing anything last night… and now they’re all shuffled.

i’ve defended lou for lots of things (except his bullpen habits)… but this is stupid.

Lou makes me want to cry.
bright side?

this is just crazy/stupid enough to work?

yeah. i got nuthin.

exactly

even though i despise the bradley signing and his lack of anything that resembles a big bat, if hes playing like a leadoff man or #2 guy, put him there. if fukudomes playing like a leadoff guy or #2 guy, put him there, no need to put them in spots they arent capable of playing

eeww Miles

besides that I guess I’m ok with it.

Dome
Bradley
Lee
Rami
Sori
Soto
any other 2nd baseman
Demps

would be my preference

I'm bad at writing full lineups

Dome
Bradley
Lee
Rami
Sori
Soto
Riot
any other 2nd baseman
Demps

ahhhhhh

dome not lead off?
miles playing?

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmer

Someone needs to

take Lou’s pencil away from him. Why can’t Dome be in the leadoff?

And

why is Miles still playing on this team.

He'd be pretty good...

on the Pirates.

Any high school baseball team named the Pirates that is.

Drew's son's team should sign him!!!!
These guys are pretty sharp, IIRC

Lotta great football

in Galena.

Yeah, they wiped the floor with everyone in sight when I lived in Dubuque and kept up with that stuff
wow, i was shocked to see Galena Pirates

I’m also from Dubuque. I’ve covered Galena athletics for the Telegraph Herald. They indeed have a great football program, but they lost some key guys to graduation so I wouldn’t expect as much out of them this year, but Ed Freed is a pretty good coach so I wouldn’t out it past them.

wouldn't put it past them, I mean.
he resembles a backup SS
That seems to be

the million dollar question. I wish I could answer it for you.

o.0

seriously? Ew.

omgggggggggggggg
Oh boy Lou panicked

I knew either Dome or Bradley were going to the five hole eventually. Lou’s desire for the lefty in the five spot to produce runs isn’t going away.

Loved your frustrated Tweet last night.
so Miles walked in on Lou watching Spanktravision at the hotel, right?

what else explains his ability to get back into the starting line up?

Before condemning the lineup

why don’t we wait to see how it produces? How’s that for an original thought?

If it works

great.

but its not one i want to see ever again.

You're not going to believe this..But I agree

I did like Dome leading off, though. Theriot has been good there at times, so let’s see.

Well maybe ;-)

I really do like Dome in the leadoff spot though but Miles should never be in the lineup. IMO

I was hoping if I just ignored the Miles thing, it would just go away.

Really, I was hoping after the injury the stint in the minors would get him going even a little bit. I think he takes a little too much flak, but he really hasn’t contributed much in any way. Make me eat my words tonigt, Aaron!

You're not going to believe this ... but I agree

on all counts.

Gettin scary.

I’m out, bring home a win. Marquis is due for a cruddy outing.

I want all the

players to do well when they play but it seems some guys get more chances than they should and some who do well when given the chance don’t get another chance. I don’t always understand Lou’s logic.

alright but

can you give me a good reason Fukudome is hitting fifth when he hits .325 with an obp of .436 in the leadoff spot? Isn’t that what a good leadoff hitter should do?

Lou would rather have his top 4 SLG/ISO guys hitting 3-6

that’s my best guess.

sadly, you're probably right.
i just don't get it

when soriano was tearing it up in leadoff, lou refused to move him down.

when fukudome is tearing up in leadoff, he finds the first opportunity to move him down.

Allie, Allie, Allie

There you go with the logic and Lou’s lineups…=)

Some things can be condemmed on theory alone

Even if Theriot goes 3-for-4 tonight, putting him in the leadoff spot because Fontenot is sitting (which has to be why Fukodome is going to the 5 spot) is just poor tactically.

It’s like Dusty starting Jose Macias because, well, he was on the 25-man roster so Dusty felt like he should start some games.

I never mind people commenting before the game.

usually the more they hate the lineup the better it does (except for Miles, he usually lives up to expectations)

cards threatening .... and pujols grounds out to third
call the world .... wainwright has a no hitter through 3
ronny's up! Let's go Ronny!
uh oh

Why don’t we just give the game to the Cards.

CALL YOUR SONS CALL YOUR DAUGHTERS CALL YOUR FRIENDS CALL YOUR NEIGHBORS

ADAM WAINRIGHT HAS A NO HITTER GOING INTO THE 4TH

pujols grounds out to third, there were no survivors.

FTFY

Going to miss most of the game, maybe catch evryone in the this game is boring b/c we are winning by 10 runs thread
You'll be missed.
thanks, Sue! Go Cubs!!
I won't be able to chat with you.

Gotta work again tomorrow morning, will be here for some of the game.

Miles starting again.

What the hell, man? I mean, seriously, what kind of logic does Lou give for this? Chicago is a big ass city; surely one of the reporters has asked him this by now. And if not, they are all failing at their jobs.

Just the sight of his name in the lineup alone really pisses me off.

neifi gave miles his personal blackmail on hendry
Damnit, Rockies announcers again...

It’s been forever since I’ve heard Len and Bob. The Reds crew were all three games, and now the Rockies for the first two. WTF??

Is the comment box

Kinda messed up for anyone else too?

marquis

yes this was a bad trade. obviously marquis would not have won 12 games the way the cubs have played but he still pitched some good games for us. hendry basically gutted this team to pick up bradley and now everyone is paying for it. imagine if we still had wood, marquis, and derosa instead of bradley. i would be thinking playoffs in oct instead of a golf date.
