The Jason Marquis trade was controversial at the time it was made. Many here disliked Marquis for providing fifth-starter performance for more than fifth-starter money. There's something to that, but especially last year, Marquis did as he was asked. The deal wound up being a bad one, in my opinion, because it was made for salary reasons (in part, to afford Milton Bradley's deal) and the player acquired -- Luis Vizcaino -- turned out to be useless and was released.
Marquis, who somehow always pitched well in Coors Field, has prospered there, making the All-Star team and keeping his ERA under 4.00. He's even pitched well after the All-Star break, something he has never done before in his career. His sinker works in Denver; this is something other breaking-ball pitchers have gone to Coors with and failed.
It's time to pay back Marquis -- and the Rockies -- for this deal.
Speaking of deals, will the Cubs acquire anyone via a waiver deal this month? Jim Hendry says "maybe":
"It's hard to say," general manager Jim Hendry said of whether the Cubs will be able to add another player. "We're not in the upper echelons, but our record's good enough where we don't get first cracks at some guys. We'll see. If we find something that makes us better, we'll try."
Right now, I don't see anyone out there who would be available by waiver deal -- and who wouldn't cost a lot in terms of players or money -- who could really help the Cubs. I don't want John Smoltz -- I think he's done -- and with Ted Lilly due to return in 10 days or so, the Cubs are going to be OK for starting pitching even with Carlos Zambrano going on the disabled list, given the apparent revival of Tom Gorzelanny. Fortunately, Z's DL move is retroactive to August 2, so he will be eligible to return on the 17th, and Lilly should be back by then as well.

Jason Marquis... well, what can you say. He was the guy many here loved to hate, but he's been rejuvenated as a Rockie. He handcuffed the Cubs on April 15 at Wrigley Field and has a 3.79 ERA in nine starts at Coors Field this year. However, several Cubs used to light him up as a Cardinal -- maybe they can pick that up tonight. Derrek Lee (16-for-33, 2 doubles, 4 HR) and Aramis Ramirez (9-for-21, 2 HR) lead the hit parade.
Ryan Dempster threw very well in his last start last Sunday in Miami -- that's what we need from him tonight, the guy who pitched so well last year. He has not had much success in Coors Field -- a 15.23 ERA in seven appearances (three starts, 13 total IP), but most of that came from two horrific starts he made in 2001 and 2003, comprising six of those innings and 16 of the 22 earned runs allowed. Against players currently on the Rockies he's done much better -- a .211 BAA. Only Todd Helton has hit him well -- .389 (7-for-18) with 3 HR.
TV tonight is, for the third game in a row, cable-only, CSN Chicago and FSN Rocky Mountain. If you are outside of Bud's Idiotic Blackout Zones, you should be able to see the game on the MLB Network. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

A resounding "no" to Sir Sidney
Let him beat up people on Caribbean beaches for the rest of his life.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009
Padilla?
Attitude problems, from what I hear. Oh, and a 4.92 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. No thanks.
Al Yellon - August 8, 2009
Don't look at me
Anyone who can’t get along with and take advise from a Maddux does not deserve to pitch in the MLB let alone for the Cubs.
Just pointing out what is out there.
Doggie Stalker - August 8, 2009

Allie - August 8, 2009
Saturday game threads are always pretty slow
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009
true
but yeesh.
Allie - August 8, 2009
We'll get our quota of ledge-jumpers and sunshine-pumpers
Once the game actually starts. Probably.
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009
true
and i’ll go find dinner instead when that happens (leaning toward turkey pot pie!)…
its starting to pick up finally, though.

Fargo?
chilango2 - August 8, 2009
Indeed
“Authentic Mexican” here means Taco Johns. Oh, the humanity!
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009
BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHA
The horror. Their tater tots, or “Potato Olés” are yummy though. However, not a single cuisine in Mexico has fried potatoes…
It’s easy to fake a Mexican meal with ingredients found anywhere. If you’re interested in some ideas, let me know.
chilango2 - August 8, 2009
Went to high school 30 miles from the border :D
I can whip up my own stuff, it’s just that all the ingredients are canned. Canned green chile sucks dead gophers through McDonald’s soda straws.
At least Atlanta had a big enough Mexican population to support a lot of markets (and taquerias). Fargo – not so much…
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009
Paradiso, baby!
Had an excellent meal there while in Bismarck last month. Mexican Village is another choice.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009
Paradiso looks like its always packed out
I may check it out on a Sunday afternoon. Kinda doubt they’ll have menudo, though.
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009

chilango2 - August 8, 2009
True story
During high school, I worked in a kitchen with a little old Mexican grandmother. She was counting the days until she could get her Social Security, but she could still crank out the food. But if you got Carmen mad, even just a little, she’d grab the biggest knife she could find, point it at your belly, and say, “I’ll take your menudo out!”
Funny every single time…
Clutch16 - August 8, 2009
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
I never thought of “it” that way. Very clever.

Another morning shift tomorrow, so again, I won’t be on here much.
Vermont Cubs Fan - August 8, 2009
I've had the same feeling though
Especially before we left for FLA, this stretch is tough.
Allie - August 8, 2009
After this and the Philly series
We only have 10 more games against winning teams.
wrigleyrocker12 - August 8, 2009
Unless Milwaukee and/or Houston go over .500 again.
Al Yellon - August 8, 2009
11, actually.
3 @ St. Louis
4 @ LA Dodgers
4 @ San Francisco
Vermont Cubs Fan - August 8, 2009
And how many of the other teams
are within a game or two of .500?
Allie - August 8, 2009
12 actually
we still have that one game with the White Sox to make up at some point. Although I don’t believe a date has been set so we may not have to play it.
burncruisin - August 9, 2009

A victory tonight will make things at least a bit less edgy around here.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009
Interesting stat
Stats_MLB: The #Rockies lead #MLB with 68 quality starts this season. Four different Rockie starters have at least 12 quality starts this year.
Allie - August 8, 2009
Cubs are 2nd with 67, in fewer games.
Al Yellon - August 8, 2009
Thanks!
I wondered where we were on the list… but wasn’t quite sure how to figure that one out.
Hopefully this doesn’t pull us into a “quality start is a bogus stat” discussion. Again.
Allie - August 8, 2009
Quality Start is a Bogus Stat is a bogus argument?

oh HELL NAH!
lexmarklover - August 8, 2009
We need to win today
If we can split this series and pull out 2 of 3 against Philly, I will feel good about this team.
wrigleyrocker12 - August 8, 2009
Splitting this series
is exactly what I wanted going into it. Of course, winning the next three would be great, but winning two games in any four-game series is realistic.
Two out of three against the Phils would be nice, and it’s realistic because the Cubs are playing at home, where they’ve been exceptionally tough. I thought the Cubs-Phils series in Philly was pretty even. Phils blow out Cubs one game, Cubs do the same another game, and the third went 14 innings (or was it 15?).

Aaron Miles

He was always a 300+ hitter. Now, it’s terrible. Plus the fact that Lou keeps running him out there.

The only quarrel I had with the Miles signing
was that it was for two years, not one.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009
At the time, me too
but now I see even the first year was a big mistake. The fact that Fontenot has stunk most of the year has only opened the door for Miles to play more.
Harry Pavlidis - August 8, 2009
i wish
truly i do.
this may be my least favorite lineup ever. dome was doing awesome in leadoff… riot leading off means he’s going to try to steal the second he gets on base, miles is playing…
ugh, lou. just UGH!

chilango2 - August 8, 2009
Miles is at 2nd right?
why not Baker or even Fonte?
shake n bake - August 8, 2009
apparently lou felt that fukudomes .300+ BA and .400+ OBP wasnt enough for a leadoff man
jesus christos - August 8, 2009
well sadly he also has the 4th best SLG and ISO of the regulars (Lee, Rami, Sori)
so they could kinda use him in the middle of the order.
shake n bake - August 8, 2009
why mess with something thats working?
jesus christos - August 8, 2009
I said above it's not what I would do
but it is justifiable, unlike Miles’ being allowed to play anything but bat boy.

jesus christos - August 8, 2009
no kidding
dome and bradley were the only ones doing anything last night… and now they’re all shuffled.
i’ve defended lou for lots of things (except his bullpen habits)… but this is stupid.

Lou makes me want to cry.
sue369 - August 8, 2009
bright side?
this is just crazy/stupid enough to work?
yeah. i got nuthin.
Allie - August 8, 2009
exactly
even though i despise the bradley signing and his lack of anything that resembles a big bat, if hes playing like a leadoff man or #2 guy, put him there. if fukudomes playing like a leadoff guy or #2 guy, put him there, no need to put them in spots they arent capable of playing
jesus christos - August 8, 2009
eeww Miles
besides that I guess I’m ok with it.

I’m also from Dubuque. I’ve covered Galena athletics for the Telegraph Herald. They indeed have a great football program, but they lost some key guys to graduation so I wouldn’t expect as much out of them this year, but Ed Freed is a pretty good coach so I wouldn’t out it past them.

LAcarl519 - August 8, 2009
Before condemning the lineup
why don’t we wait to see how it produces? How’s that for an original thought?
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009

but its not one i want to see ever again.
Allie - August 8, 2009
You're not going to believe this..But I agree
I did like Dome leading off, though. Theriot has been good there at times, so let’s see.
BleedsbluinMI - August 8, 2009
Well maybe ;-)
I really do like Dome in the leadoff spot though but Miles should never be in the lineup. IMO
sue369 - August 8, 2009
I was hoping if I just ignored the Miles thing, it would just go away.
Really, I was hoping after the injury the stint in the minors would get him going even a little bit. I think he takes a little too much flak, but he really hasn’t contributed much in any way. Make me eat my words tonigt, Aaron!
BleedsbluinMI - August 8, 2009
You're not going to believe this ... but I agree
on all counts.
Not Bruce Froemming - August 8, 2009
Gettin scary.
I’m out, bring home a win. Marquis is due for a cruddy outing.
BleedsbluinMI - August 8, 2009
I want all the
players to do well when they play but it seems some guys get more chances than they should and some who do well when given the chance don’t get another chance. I don’t always understand Lou’s logic.
sue369 - August 8, 2009
alright but
can you give me a good reason Fukudome is hitting fifth when he hits .325 with an obp of .436 in the leadoff spot? Isn’t that what a good leadoff hitter should do?
lexmarklover - August 8, 2009
Lou would rather have his top 4 SLG/ISO guys hitting 3-6
that’s my best guess.
shake n bake - August 8, 2009
sadly, you're probably right.
lexmarklover - August 8, 2009
i just don't get it
when soriano was tearing it up in leadoff, lou refused to move him down.
when fukudome is tearing up in leadoff, he finds the first opportunity to move him down.
Allie - August 8, 2009
Allie, Allie, Allie
There you go with the logic and Lou’s lineups…=)
BleedsbluinMI - August 8, 2009
sorry!
lol
Allie - August 8, 2009
Some things can be condemmed on theory alone
Even if Theriot goes 3-for-4 tonight, putting him in the leadoff spot because Fontenot is sitting (which has to be why Fukodome is going to the 5 spot) is just poor tactically.
It’s like Dusty starting Jose Macias because, well, he was on the 25-man roster so Dusty felt like he should start some games.
Invalid User - August 8, 2009
I never mind people commenting before the game.
usually the more they hate the lineup the better it does (except for Miles, he usually lives up to expectations)

Miles starting again.
What the hell, man? I mean, seriously, what kind of logic does Lou give for this? Chicago is a big ass city; surely one of the reporters has asked him this by now. And if not, they are all failing at their jobs.
Just the sight of his name in the lineup alone really pisses me off.

Damnit, Rockies announcers again...
It’s been forever since I’ve heard Len and Bob. The Reds crew were all three games, and now the Rockies for the first two. WTF??

marquis
yes this was a bad trade. obviously marquis would not have won 12 games the way the cubs have played but he still pitched some good games for us. hendry basically gutted this team to pick up bradley and now everyone is paying for it. imagine if we still had wood, marquis, and derosa instead of bradley. i would be thinking playoffs in oct instead of a golf date.
