The Cubs have, along with all other MLB teams, released their tentative 2010 schedule this afternoon. Pity. It was kind of fun the last few years to fill out the acrostic-type puzzle that was created when some teams would release their schedule, and others (including the Cubs under the MacPhail regime) would treat it as a CIA secret.
In any case, MLB has made a good decision by releasing the schedule early so people can get an idea about next year, get excited about it, and make plans for road trips. Our interleague opponents in 2010 will be the AL West; visits to Wrigley by the Angels and A's, and road trips to Texas and Seattle.
Complete schedule after the jump. I'll post game times here when I have them. All times CDT.

Finally!
The Angels make their first trip ever to Wrigley.
Josh Timmers - September 15, 2009
Typical bizarre schedule.
The Cubs don’t make their first trip to St. Louis until August, and play the Cardinals only one series before the All-Star break.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Which is exactly why I wrote my post earlier this year...
asking MLB to balance the schedules. We play the Cardinals 15 times, 9 at home which is good. I think you should play your division foes 18 times each, 3 home series and 3 away series.
I also don’t like 2 off days within our first 9 games.
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
How many early off days a team has
is usually determined by how many home openers a team plays in.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
plus due to weather
it gives a little more room to get games in early
Cubbie-Tim - September 15, 2009
Agree...
… the early days off both allow for rescheduled games if the weather is anything like it was early this year, and allows for less games that may be postponed due to that early season nasty weather.
AndrewJStone - September 15, 2009
Exactly.
This year was unusual since the Cubs opened the first week playing in retractable roof stadiums (Houston and Milwaukee). Therefore, the team didn’t have as many early off days.
The 2010 schedule is much more typical.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
I see what everyone is saying
but you put it after game 1 of each series, so you are predicting game 1 is going to be PPD. Why not put it at the end of the series?
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
It's because of the value of the tickets for the opener.
Fans go to great lengths to get tickets for opening day but not for the rest of the games in the series. Teams also charge premium prices for opening day and they couldn’t get people to pay for them if they weren’t certain they would get to see opening day.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
So does baseball want to avoid postponed games or make premium money?
It sounds like to me premium money.
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
Of course, it's always about the money.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
Yes I know,
I was being sarcastic!
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
postponed games can = loss of $$$
might not be made up, people who flew into town for that series are no longer in town, maybe the teams are eliminated when they make it up and no one goes. $$$$$$ is the driving factor for both
Cubbie-Tim - September 15, 2009
Which is why when the wife
and I come to Chicago I always try to catch the games on the first part of the trip to make sure I catch a game at least.
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
Last few years we've played more in STL than Chicago
But you’re right, it should be 18 games.
Mike Martin - September 15, 2009
I'm saving my pennies to go to Seattle and see that stadium
I really want to visit that town, catch a show and a game.
I’m taking contributions. Anybody?
chilango2 - September 15, 2009
Get. To. The. Showbox.
One of my favorite venues in the country.
http://www.showboxonline.com/market/
AndrewJStone - September 15, 2009
No contributions
but i’d love to go, too! I’ve always wanted to visit Safeco
ambrosiadreams - September 15, 2009
YES!
I’m from SE Alaska. A weekend jaunt to Seattle to see my first Cubs game live!
cubs0505 - September 15, 2009
Sucks for interleague
Come on, seriously? One entire road trip outside of White Sox? I’m happy they’re going to Seattle but seriously, there are a lot of Cub fans nation-wide. They should have played a game in California against Angels or A’s.
Plus the east coast trips is just as bad! All games are during the week (screws any weekend vacation plans) Playing in NY in April is going to be cold and only two games in Philly during the week! Granted Philly should be good so 2 games instead of 3 or 4 is OK but still.
Really a crappy road schedule thus far.
ak123 - September 15, 2009
There's still a chance you can see a Cub in Anaheim in 2010
Sure, it’s the All-Star Game, but you’re guaranteed to see a Cub there.
Bill Potter - September 15, 2009
But the Cubs will have 12 All Stars in 2010
and they don’t have to travel far, as the previous series is in LA.
chilango2 - September 15, 2009
Thank goodness they won't have to travel far
We wouldn’t want jet-lagged Cubs trying to win an All-Star game, after all.
Bill Potter - September 15, 2009
Yeah -
after all, IT MATTERS
:-)
CaughtInTheVines - September 15, 2009
you did see...
at Texas in May? Not Memorial Day weekend, but it is a weekend.
Seattle is nice, recommended to everyone out there.
bison - September 15, 2009
And before it gets to be 100 degrees there.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Totally missed the May trip
But didn’t they go to Texas only 2 years ago? Sosa got the HR? Maybe it was at Wrigley but I don’t think so.
I actually am considering the Seattle trip. I’ve heard great things about the park.
ak123 - September 15, 2009
Yes, that was two years ago (2007) in Texas.
Weird. I was sure they’d go to Oakland in 2010, and have Texas at Wrigley.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
See if they're going to do interleague
They need to do it right.
If Cubs don’t go to Fenway in 2011, I think as a Cubs fan on the East Coast I have the right to be extremely pissed.
ak123 - September 15, 2009
I'll be at Seattle for sure
I live in Portland, so only three hours for a game is much nicer than 9 to San Francisco. Plus Seattle does have a great park. Well worth the trip.
portlandcubfan - September 15, 2009
Arlington
Great ballpark… I highly recommend it. Its out in the middle of nowhere, but I think its one of the really underrated ballparks.
dmlichte - September 15, 2009
ARE THERE SHUTTLE SERVICE'S
That run from Dallas to the ball park ?? Thinking about that road trip……
cubs north - September 15, 2009
This is just stupid.
May 14-16: PITTSBURGH (3)
May 17-18: COLORADO (2)
May 19-20: at Philadelphia (2)
May 21-23: at Texas (3)
santoswoodenlegs - September 15, 2009
And they have 12 games in a 52-game span vs. the Pirates in May and June.
Granted, that could be real good for the team record, but still.
Also, only five games vs. Colorado. At least seven vs. all the other NL West teams.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
well the way we played Colorado this year
I don’t know if this is a bad thing lol
heine41 - September 15, 2009
Also,
What is with two series in Cincinnati by May 10? Reminds me of our series in Houston and Milwaukee to start this year.
Vermont Cubs Fan - September 15, 2009
That's a bit early for
that many games against Pitt. The fire sale doesn’t usually get REALLY cranked up until late June and July.
The Pirates might have 4 or 5 bona fide major leaguers still on the roster in May!
fsuapollo - September 15, 2009
Random...
Four game trip to San Diego at the end of the year? Couldn’t have just stopped in there during another west coast swing?
I like that we play the division a lot in September. Two series against the Cards, two against Houston and one against Milwaukee.
kanderber - September 15, 2009
Sucks for me...
santoswoodenlegs - September 15, 2009
Same as this years SF trip.
bison - September 15, 2009
What's up with...
…off days in the middle of series outside of the first one of the year? Specifically 4/13…either start the series on the 13th or play four! Sheesh.
Tater01 - September 15, 2009
There's always an off day for the home opening series incase of weather.
santoswoodenlegs - September 15, 2009
Let's hope Aaron Miles
does not need this schedule.
mrcubsfan - September 15, 2009
Only as a visiting player.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
I wouldn't even wish his crapiness on teams I hate
ak123 - September 15, 2009
Oh, I would.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Compared the cubs and sox schedules.
looks like MLB managed make it so only one team is in town at a time next year, thus making the northside – southside double header impossible.
mjk83 - September 15, 2009
That's really unusual and hard to do.
Generally, there are at least one or two overlaps.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
TWSS
santoswoodenlegs - September 15, 2009
yeah
I was counting on one of those. I figured if I scheduled ahead I could do it this upcoming year…oh well.
mjk83 - September 15, 2009
playing Pittsburgh and cincinnati
only 15 games each but the Brewers 18 games – did I calculate that right?
Ihatethecards - September 15, 2009
Yeah, there is usually one Central team we play more than the others.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Look at what this dingleberry wrote:
chilango2 - September 15, 2009
Just wait til next year!
DTJchris - September 15, 2009
Sigh.
It’s bad enough the schedule formula is so unbalanced these days, and the road trips make no sense either. Bud Selig has done it again.
cubsforever - September 15, 2009
And we STILL...
have never played in Oakland. Not that it’s any great venue, but jeez—throw us Bay Area Cubs fans a bone every decade or so.
bison - September 15, 2009
I was sure the Cubs would go to Oakland in 2010...
… considering they went to Texas the last time we played the AL West. Oh, well.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Again official opening day is away...damn!
cubswynn - September 15, 2009
It's not a bad thing...
the weather can really suck that early in April.
santoswoodenlegs - September 15, 2009
They do open at home against the Brewers.
That should be fun. Seems like games with the Brew Crew are pretty entertaining. I like playing a rival for the home opener, better than playing the Rockies like this year.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
Agreed.
I think Dome should re-enact his Opening Day heroics from ’08 – with one more man on base!
daver - September 15, 2009
True.
I learned that the hard way this year.
cubswynn - September 15, 2009
Do you think 2 Cubs/Sox series are necessary every year?
Personally, I think this cross town rivals should limit to one series per season. They can alternate between parks. For one thing, it hurts revenue for both teams. The games would sell out regardless in Chicago.
I thought the point of interleague was for fans to see teams play each other in rare series. I still can’t get over that in 2008 Cubs didn’t even play Yankees or Red Sox.
ak123 - September 15, 2009
Reinsdorf lobbied his buddy Selig for this
Because the Sox don’t always sell out.
Shanghai Badger - September 15, 2009
Interleague
I’d prefer they do away with the series… but knowing thats not going to happen, I wonder if they could do a 4-game series with 2 games at Wrigley then 2 games at US Cellular. They could do this in NY and the Bay area, too.
dmlichte - September 15, 2009
That would never happen...
… the teams would never agree to a split like that.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
They'll be lucky to win 83 games with that schedule
Where IS BLou anyway?
Worf - September 15, 2009
No one is complaining....
ak123 - September 15, 2009
He and Sue
are having a secret rendezvous. Oops, I guess it’s not secret anymore!
azjazzman - September 15, 2009
Hopefully, no sharp objects will be involved.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
16 of last 19 on the road stinks
gocubsgo22 - September 15, 2009
woops. misread a series
gocubsgo22 - September 15, 2009
Pity about Northeast visits
After having the road games vs. the Mets on a holiday weekend this year, the Cubs are put in the opposite situation with April weekday games in 2010. More inconvenient, but at least the ticket price tier should be lower. Also, only two weekday games in Philly in May makes a long drive by me less attractive. Oh well, I’ll just have to hope for a Red Sox or Yankee visit in 2011 to compensate.
Qixotl - September 15, 2009
I'm guessing the Cubs will go to Boston in 2011
and the Yankees will come to Wrigley. It seems the rotation of interleague play would march up the AL East with the NL Central for 2011.
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
I hope you're right -
I’d love to see the Cubs and Red Sox at Fenway (I think I’d trot out my Billy WIlliams jersey for the occasion!).
CaughtInTheVines - September 15, 2009
That would make sense.
Cubs haven’t been to NYC for a Yankee series since 2005. It’d be cool to see them in the new Yankee Stadium.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Idk
It didn’t work out so well when we opened the stadium.
nji232 - September 15, 2009
THAT WOULD BE A GREAT SERIES.....
Wonder just how hard it would be to obtain tickets ?? No chance unless you knew a ticket broker ….
cubs north - September 15, 2009
I know the feeling
no weekend games in Houston in 2009 sucked.
Cubbie-Tim - September 15, 2009
My First Child is Due on Opening Day!
Sweet!
Actually, what’s up with starting a week into April and bleeding into October again? I thought it was just because of the WBC?
Bradsbeard - September 15, 2009
Congrats!
cowsarecool220 - September 15, 2009
congrats!
Cubbie-Tim - September 15, 2009
No, it's because...
… they don’t want to open up on March 28.
Congrats on the baby.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
Opening day in Atlanta works for me :)
Devin B - September 15, 2009
Why do the Yankees and Red Sox
get to play to begin and end the year? They play each other 18 times.
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
Only 18 times?
I thought they played each other every day.
Al Yellon - September 15, 2009
They usually do, must be a scheduling flaw.
Cubsfan Waveland - September 15, 2009
Still trying to get to Pittsburgh
My friend and I come into Chicago every year for a weekend series. We also like to catch a road trip if possible. With all the times we play Pittsburgh, could they just once have a visit that on a weekend that isn’t a holiday weekend, mother’s or father’s day or Easter? Next year? Two mid-week visits in early May and late May/early June.
I really scratch my head about these schedule makers. I remember there used to be a husband and wife who put the schedules together on there kitchen table. MLB stopped using them. Too bad. I think they did a much better job. It can’t be that difficult to put together a balanced schedule, i.e., play divisional foes throughout the season, instead of twelve times before or after the ASG.
cubfred - September 15, 2009
3 of last 5 series against non-division teams
including a trip to FLA on Sep 17th…yuck.
LAcarl519 - September 15, 2009
Still waiting...
…for the Cubs to come to Kansas City.
ryan89 - September 15, 2009
Well I intend to make my second trip out to Chicago next summer
I’m going to most likely catch one of the Cubs-White Sox games at Comiskey then go to a couple Pittsburgh games at Wrigley. I’m excited. Three years away from Chicago is three years too many!
