The Jacksonville Suns won the Southern League Championship tonight as they blinded our Tennessee Smokies, 7-3.
Today's game got off to a good start, as the Smokies scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a double by second baseman Tony Thomas.
But Smokies starter Andrew Cashner couldn't hold the lead. Cashner gave up one run in the top of the third, which Tennessee promptly got back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by left fielder Ty Wright. But Cashner got into real trouble in the fourth inning. He walked two men and then allowed a three-run home run to the opposing pitcher to give Jacksonville a 4-3 lead that they would never relinquish.
For the evening, Cashner threw four innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out only one.
After the fourth inning, the Smokies offense couldn't do anything. They never even got a man as far as second base again before the ninth inning. Meanwhile, the Smokies defense made three errors in the sixth inning which led to two runs. Shortstop Starlin Castro muffed a ground ball and pitcher Jayson Ruhlman moved the runner to second base on a wild pickoff throw. The next batter bunted, and Castro made a throwing error which allowed the original runner to score. That runner would eventually score later in the inning.
The Suns tacked on their seventh run in the seventh inning off of reliever Alex Maestri.
The Smokies did mount a threat in the ninth when the first two batters reached on a single and a walk. But after right fielder Tyler Colvin grounded into a force out, he then inexplicably got picked off first base with a man on second and one out.
Wright was the big bat for the Smokies tonight--he went 3 for 4 with the home run. Catcher Welington Castillo was 2 for 3.
It was a disappointing finish to the season, but congratulations anyway to Ryne Sandberg and the Smokies as they had a very successful season.

And Minor League Wrap
is officially on hiatus until April. Thanks for reading all season. I’m sure I’ll do some season wrap ups in the next few weeks.

What no Arizona Fall League reports ?
No Winter Ball ?
What will we do without you ?
Thanks for everything Josh. At least we had a couple of teams in the post season. It sounds like the Cubs will move up
the charts in the assesment of their minor league system which was pretty dismal at the start of this year.

Heh
I may actually write up something on the AFL, but if I do, I’ll do it as a fanpost. And I sure as heck am not going to do it every day.
The Cubs minor league system had a better year. No one is going to rank them as a top ten system, but they’ve moved out of the bottom this year. Last year it was a struggle to find 20 prospects, this year I’m going to have trouble excluding people, even if the number of players with true star ceilings is still small.

If you want to do an AFL post...
… from time to time and put it on the front page, that’s cool with me.

Did you know?
That Soriano and Derrek Lee are in the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame?
Did you know there even was an Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame? Because I didn’t.
You’d think the induction ceremonies would be on ESPN Classic or the MLB network. Everyone sitting around on a hot day in October in Mesa thanking all the Farm Directors who assigned them to play in the AFL.
Josh Timmers - September 20, 2009
I knew that.
D-Lee was inducted two years ago; they had a nice ceremony and he came to accept the award.
Maybe it will be on the MLB Network this year — that network didn’t exist when last year’s ceremony occurred.

I remain very curious to see how Gaub does in a hitters league.
Doggie Stalker - September 20, 2009
The PCL is a hitter's league
although not as much for the Eastern teams like Iowa.
Still, I don’t know how much Gaub is going to pitch in the AFL. They really tend to limit innings of pitchers in the AFL, which is a big reason why it’s such a hitter’s league. The guys who throw a lot of innings tend to be the less names or guys who are trying to build up arm strength after an injury.

Thanks as always for all your work on the minor league wraps.

Kudos to Josh

Thanks, Josh!
I look forward to your prospect lists later this Winter.

Another thanks, Josh!
Nice job!

Great work this season Josh
with the major league team being so sorry this season, I was able to take a great interest in the minor leagues and you are a major part of that.

Thank you

Good to See Smokies Win Division Title
The 2009 Smokies were the Cubs’ best AA team since the 2005 West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Winning games is a big part of player development.
memphiscub - September 21, 2009
If I had to choose
any franchise in the minors to have a successful, winning season, I’d choose the AA franchise every time.
