NEW YORK -- There wasn't any traffic coming into NYC -- everyone's leaving for the holiday weekend, and even Manhattan traffic wasn't bad. I'll report from Citi Field on tonight's game tomorrow morning, but let's hope the Cubs have as easy a time with the Mets as I did getting here this afternoon. They'll need to start a winning streak rightfreakingnow if they want to continue to have any shot at the NL Wild Card.
As first posted in drodd's FanShot, the Cubs have claimed pitcher Thomas Diamond on waivers from the Rangers. Diamond is a 2004 #1 draft coming off Tommy John surgery. At one time he and John Danks were considered the two top pitching prospects for the Rangers; you know what Danks has done, and the Cubs are trying to catch the proverbial lightning in a bottle with Diamond. He'll be added to the 40-man roster (which now stands at 39 players) and get a chance to compete for a spot in spring training next year.
Sad baseball news: also originally posted in a FanShot by N Oakley, legendary Detroit Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell, now 91 years old and retired, has inoperable cancer. I wish him well; if you never heard Ernie call a game, google around. There are recordings of him available and every baseball fan should hear Ernie call a game at least once.
And if you think Cubs games are slow, be glad you're not Jonathan Papelbon -- he's been fined for slowing down games. I thought every time I turned on a Red Sox game it seemed like it was taking forever.

The Cubs beat up on Bobby Parnell last Saturday at Wrigley Field. He gave up nine hits including a grand slam to Jake Fox. Let's hope for more of the same. Incidentally, Parnell is the grandson of Mel Parnell, who pitched for the Red Sox in the 1940's and 1950's and later became a baseball radio broadcaster.
The Mets beat up on Carlos Zambrano last Sunday at Wrigley Field. He gave up 11 hits in less than four innings, including a triple to Anderson Hernandez. I don't know anything about Z's grandfather, but I'm sure he is a very nice man.
Today's game is cable-only in New York (SNY) and Chicago (CSN). For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

cozmotaylor123 - September 4, 2009
Please win tonight
and act like you want to be there and want to win.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
a little effort goes a long way
ABH
always be hustling
cozmotaylor123 - September 4, 2009
Couldn't resist
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Try #2
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
For Santo, please beat the Mets.
Since Santo made the effort to go to New York, let’s hope the Cubs can keep a modicum of respect and grab the first game of this series. Let’s start this one with a good taste in our mouths.
Do it Z and do it Cubs!! Please finish strong.
…and I hope Soriano begins his winter vacation today.
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
Good god Santo decided to go???
Damnit. Now we HAVE TO win.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
It would be so nice if they announced they were shutting down Soriano for the year.
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
For what reason?
If his knee is OK, he should play. If it isn’t, then he shouldn’t. I don’t think either one of us knows the answer to that question.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
Yes, let's do this for Ronnie. Pleeease!
katie casey - September 4, 2009
Fox had the slam last week
Wonder if he will even be in the line-up?
Got to play Soriano, you know……
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
Let's throw Miles in the leadoff spot and see what he can do.
Actually, I think he’d have a better chance of getting a base hit if he wore a blindfold.
DKT - September 4, 2009
I wish they would throw him off the team.
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
bringing back the Eddie Gaedel strategy?
no thanks. Miles can fetch water for Zambrano between innings
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
Maybe he'd meet the same demise as the gatoraid cooler.
AndrewJStone - September 4, 2009
Blinfold and a bat?
Why don’t we spin him around and point him in the direction of the piƱata tied to Mike Quade?
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Just teach him to lean into pitches
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
I think we're missing a therapeutic marketing opportunity
AARON MILES BOBBLEHEAD DOLL DAY! The Cubs have been so frustrating to watch this season, can you imagine 40,000+ fans at Wrigley simultaneously ripping little Aaron’s head off in disgust?
DKT - September 4, 2009
LIFE-SIZED AARON MILES BOBBLEHEAD DOLL DAY!
There – fixed that for you…
ballhawk - September 4, 2009
4 groundouts to 2B
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
That's Miles' version of the cycle!
tommy veryzer - September 4, 2009
The Stationary Bike version.
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
but the cycle is supposed to be challenging to accomplish...
a cycle for aaron miles is getting the ball out of the infield 4 times
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
How about a cycle of
5-3, 6-3, 4-3, 3 Unassisted, and 1-3?
ChipSet - September 4, 2009
We'll just call that
a Golden Miles
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
i call it miles starting
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
It's like a golden shower
With none of the joy or excitement.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Good afternoon. Look at this:
chilango2 - September 4, 2009
...
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
I'm giddy with excitement, seriously.
BleedsbluinMI - September 4, 2009
IT'S HAPPENING!!!
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
I don't care either way
but if he’s hurt, he shouldn’t play.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
shouldn't have been playing
you mean
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
If he's hurt
he shouldn’t play.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
FINALLY!!!!!!
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
I'm getting my
beer to celebrate. About time Lou.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Also, see this:
I wonder how they’ll work the logistics of that out.
chilango2 - September 4, 2009
they'll send in one of his clones
katie casey - September 4, 2009
you dont know?
dlee can fly
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
DLee is a damned teleporter!
That’s how he gets to Riot’s “throws”.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Please, D Lee
No — pretty please, find a way.
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
Uh, wat.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
Hoff is playing !st base
It would have been nice for Fox to stay in the line-up. But I guess his bad play at 1st irritated Lou.
TJ11 - September 4, 2009
Since when does a player's bad play irritate Lou enough for him to pull them out of the lineup?
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
Rec'd
chilango2 - September 4, 2009
Oh sure
now they’re worried about defense
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
This is going to be a horseshit lineup, I can feel it.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
I may need preemptive rum
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
If you don't stop drinking its never pre-emptive.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
Cubs Lineup
Fukudome, CF
Theriot, SS
Bradley, RF
Ramirez, 3B
Hoffpauir, 1B
Baker, 2B
Soto, C
Fuld, LF
Zambrano, P
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
Pre-emptive rum it is!
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
God, I wish I wasn't working tonight's Indianapolis-Louisville game.
Some Effen and pineapple sounds about right for this lineup.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
I said some “effen” stuff when I saw that lineup.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
Indeed.
Reminds of the lineups Lou ran out in New York last September.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
Except our post-season fate was already known by then
Ohhhhh…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
oh to be in that position again.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
That's What She Said.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
No, no
this will be fine.
Wait. That could be the cold medicine speaking. What day is it again?
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
Fish
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
yo ho ho
katie casey - September 4, 2009
lou
keep bradley in the 2 hole
thank you
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
But Riot's soooo productive in the top part of the order
Don’cha know?
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
lefty, righty, lefty, righty
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Wouldn't it be nice to have a manager who plays the numbers?
Instead of playing his “gut.” Although in Lou’s defense he’s got a lot of gut.
Curtain Jerker - September 4, 2009
ted lilly wants you to vote for him
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fan_forum/moy09_award/ballot.jsp?partnerId=rss_chc
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
Lilly's competition is LaToya?
This is a joke, right?
chilango2 - September 4, 2009
A contest for the guy with the shortest arms?
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
I will be eating wings and drinking beer
Kinda of a last hurrah before fatherhood. Will drink one for all of you.
Worf - September 4, 2009
Be better if you drank one for each of us
More personal…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Yeah, screw that, Worf.
Drink one or all of the following in honor of me:
—A PBR
—Three fingers of Jameson
—A Manhattan
Also, congrats.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
Thanks bud
When’s she due?
chilango2 - September 4, 2009
Any time after Sept. 13
Worf - September 4, 2009
Thank God...
Soriano can sit. I believe he’s hurt. He can rest and come back in 2010.
This team is better with a healthy Soriano. Learn to love it.
Worf - September 4, 2009
You can do anything.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Bars near Citi Field?
Anyone know of a good bar close to Citi Field? I am going to the Saturday game and was hoping to catch some of the U of I game immediately after. Thanks
jlovallo - September 4, 2009
Totally isolated. Nothing within walking distance
Doggie Stalker - September 4, 2009
OT: Jessica: did you watch "A Dog Year" on HBO last night?
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
It would appear
That this is also our First Pitch Thread. Don’t go slowing it down by posting hi-res pictures of scantily-clad women, now.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
ok. Oh, Clutch, I got you something
to go with your rum
BleedsbluinMI - September 4, 2009
Already got some of that
Mixed with the rum, of course…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
I haven't gotten any of that...
BleedsbluinMI - September 4, 2009
Ok then
it’ll do.
How about some scoring early today, Cubs?
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
Try and stop me!
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
Ow!
Lego!
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Jesus.
The internet really does have EVERYTHING.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
I'm starting to wonder where your loyalties lie...
…especially given the Mets starting catcher tonight. Hmm…
ballhawk - September 4, 2009
Still plenty of good seats available!
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Fukudome just took one :-(
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
haven't been around (school and FB season heating up) so....
BP puts the Cubs playoff odds at 2.4% too high? too low? just right?
same question for 83.2 projected wins.
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Too high and probably just right.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
yeah, unfortunately they're both about right.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
Everyone knows
It’s 79-83 wins
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
at this point I would celebrate an 84th win like it's a playoff berth
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Damn you, Warren Buffett!
I’m sick of your goddam GEICO ads!
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
so theriot lasted 2 pitches--more patience
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
THERIOTS SUCH A GREAT TOP OF THE ORDER GUY
HE CAN SOMETIMES STEAL BASES
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
Castillo GO 4-3
Baker to Hoffpauir – just what we thought we’d see in April
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
David Wright is no longer Dark Helmet
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Len said he didn't like the fit
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
Nice work Z.
Now let’s get some runs!!
sue369 - September 4, 2009

In a row?
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
is that legal?
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
sure - as long as it's not a double-tap...
ballhawk - September 4, 2009
Geo with a nice hit.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
starting up the fan club again?
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009

sue369 - September 4, 2009
I'm eating
red licorice. Want some?
sue369 - September 4, 2009
yummmmm...
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
eww Soto isn't playing regularly?
I’m guessing Lou isn’t familiar with BABIP
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
How is BABIP formed??????
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
rec'ed
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
I see you digg.
dtpollitt - September 4, 2009
BB
Slugger to the plate.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
a single will do just fine Z
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Don't try to
kill the ball Z. Just hit it.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Or walk
It’s as good as a hit…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
why yes it is.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
The Cubs do have a 4-series streak vs. the Mets with a grand slam.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
*3 series-streak.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
Walk is okay, too
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
Z K
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
crap
sue369 - September 4, 2009
z gets too rampedup at the plate
he should’ve made farmer bob pitch to him; parnell sux
brian custer - September 4, 2009
Following on Gamecast
Did Z get his cuts in?
It looked like two of three of his swings were at strikes.
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
he was trying to put it in the upper deck
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Well
I don’t know if he has any other swing than that.
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
let's hope Z has another quick inning.
I think the bats will come alive next inning.
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
I hope they do.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Pretty quiet in here tonight.
I suppose high school sports take some of the posters away.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
chess teams where its at yadig
jesus christos - September 4, 2009
lots of Rooks of the Year candidates there...
ballhawk - September 4, 2009
Yeah
That’s me in a few weeks. My daughter is in the band, and we help set up for the halftime show.
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
1-0 Mets
Blah
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
shoot 1-0 Mets
sue369 - September 4, 2009
well, at least the bases were empty
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
gotta score 1 to win anyways.
might as well get 2 tonight.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
true
sue369 - September 4, 2009
though with this offense sometimes...
you worry about 1 run.
Bill Potter - September 4, 2009
I know. I do have
a feeling tonight they’ll do ok.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
let's go Cubbies
Dome, Riot, Bradley, Aram, Hoff
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
and hopefully more!
LAcarl519 - September 4, 2009
almost a bunt single for Dome
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Sure, AJ "accidentally" kicked Riot...
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
AJ is a puke.
I can’t stand the sight of him.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
I would trade Soto for him.
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
He wore out his welcome here in SF very quickly
Considering the high price that they paid for him
vonde6 - September 4, 2009
Bradley
2 out single
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Good job Milt!
sue369 - September 4, 2009
The Cubs are only allowed to hit with 2 outs tonight
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Sullivan
That was his first home run since Sept 12, 2007 and only the second left handed batter (Prince Fielder being the other) to homer off Zambrano this season.
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
Waited for his pitch and got it
It happens sometimes…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
bobby parnell
no runs through 3. What has happened to our team.
Ryanocm1 - September 4, 2009
Our offense's heart and soul
Is hanging out with his wife and newborn
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
parnell is the pits
we really need to crush the mail-it-in-mutts
brian custer - September 4, 2009
Anybody listening on the radio?
What’s Ronnie gotta say about the new home of the Mets?
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
The Mets are in my home market
can I still listen on MLB Audio? I know I’m blacked out from MLB TV
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
I think you can always listen to the audio broadcasts
No radio blackouts, AFAIK
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
I usually switch to the audio
after the game to listen to the postgame because MLB TV cuts out right after
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
Len & Bob
suggesting names for Derrek’s new son. Obvious Lee, Hopeful Lee. They really play off each other well.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Bob's suggestion, of course
“Bren”
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
I actually like that name.
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Desperate Lee
would sum up the Cubs need for a win tonight
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
yes it would
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Cut fastball?
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Stay in that box, Castillo
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
come on Z, get out of this
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Wright's protecting
Does Z have a slider?
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Slider missed
High-and-away fastball got a swing, tho.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
WHERE IS YOUR COMFORTABLE HELMET NOW WRIGHT?!!?
shake n bake - September 4, 2009
Not really "comfortable"
Just more comfortable when you take a 95 MPH fastball to the noggin.
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Dear Cubs,
Please score this inning.
Thanks!
sue369 - September 4, 2009
Let's get some runs
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
Wow
This game thread actually is pretty nice.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
We be slow
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
It's OK...it needz moar Cub runs though.
santoswoodenlegs - September 4, 2009
That would be an improvement
chitownhawkeye - September 4, 2009
Yes, that would help
At least nobody’s declared the game over.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
i am looking forward
to heilman’s appearance. he did well against his ex-teammates last saturday
brian custer - September 4, 2009
Trivia answer
Polo Grounds, no? The Giants sure as hell weren’t using it…
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
Yes, Polo Grounds
It was razed after Shea opened in ’64.
Not Bruce Froemming - September 4, 2009
MM BB
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
He's hitting .312 with the Cubs
Not bad for a career .265 hitter
jabber811 - September 4, 2009
And if you wanna
JUMP!
Clutch16 - September 4, 2009
wait, a hit with just one out?
