Good news! The ALCS is over and we don't have to listen to Buck and McCarver again until Wednesday!
Bad news! When we do have to listen to them again, either the Cardinals or Brewers will be in the World Series.
Good news! Cubs fans can now root for the Rangers for the next two weeks. Go Rangers!
Bad news! Either the Cardinals or Brewers could actually win the World Series. (Let's hope not.)
No more news. Except this: the roof will be closed at Miller Park tonight because temperatures in Milwaukee are going to be in the 40s. You're probably not watching this game anyway, because the Bears are playing tonight. After the jump, there's info on tonight's game anyway.

Game time for Brewers/Cardinals: 7:05 pm. CDT. Cardinals lead series 3-2. TV: TBS. Announcers: Brian Anderson (play-by-play), Ron Darling (analyst), John Smoltz (analyst), Craig Sager (reporter).

Did you happen to catch Buck & McCarver's "Bartman" reference last night?
These guys are such hypocrites. They’re the ones who keep the Bartman story going, not the fans. We’ve moved on. Isn’t it time that they did?
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
Absolutely.
But just wait until the next postseason game at Wrigley Field when a ball goes anywhere near that spot. We’ll never hear the end of it.
Al Yellon - October 16, 2011
Please...
they wouldn’t even need a foul ball to mention it, it would be in the opening monologue.
CubFan81 - October 16, 2011
I'm still peeved that they played "The Night Chicago Died" during the Cubs/Mets game in Sep 2004 when LaTroy Hawkins blew a save.
I thought it was very unprofessional and beneath even them to do.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
It was the game where Victor Diaz hit a game-tying homerun.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
one of the worst weekends to be a Cub fan
Hammer - October 17, 2011
Best thing for the Cubs to do when they get back there is to ignore the naysayers & forget about the past.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
How about McCarver's line about Ian Kinsler turning a double play, and where he wants the ball tossed from Elvis Andrus?
“He’ll take it anywhere, but he likes it on the chest”
cubs0505 - October 16, 2011
Marcum can't pitch in the postseason
Cubbiegoon - October 16, 2011
He lasted a whole inning.
jpeters407 - October 16, 2011
That's what you get for managing from your gut.
And I like Ron Roenicke, but the stats were there and they showed that he is terrible against St. Louis.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
He has been terrible since
September…Narveson did not look much better but I wonder if he would have been better had he been preparing for a start. STL struggles against left handed pitching…
TheRiot Police - October 17, 2011
So awful
This is what I get for cheering for the Brewers. Never again.
Go Texas.
AussieCub - October 16, 2011
I'm not cheering either team. I will cheer for the Rangers in the World Series.
And I hope it’s a 4 game sweep without any rain or snow delays so this season can finally come to an end.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
No rain delay or a snow delay
But one game’ll be postponed for a seiche warning!
Yeah, hoping for a 4 game sweep by the Rangers. Cardinals are half-pint Yankees, Rangers deserve at least 1 World Series trophy.
ddoubleheader - October 16, 2011
Man, this sucks. I feel bad for the Brewers. I really do.
I have friends that are Brewer fans. I’m from Wisconsin. I’ve been conflicted the whole postseason. I knew I would be.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I expect better from you.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Why, exactly?
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I'm a Badger, you're a Badger.
But our Cubdom comes above any sort of Wisconsin-ism for the Brewers.
THEY’RE THE BREWERS, MAN, COM’ON.
I wanted the Brewers to win, because my disdain for the Brewers is much, much less than that for the Cardinals, but now we’re forced to cheer for the Rangers.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Yeah, I thought you were pulling for the Brewers
I know, it shouldn’t matter. And if Marmol does his job three weeks ago, this situation doesn’t happen!
6 in BCS. Not surprising, but I don’t like it. If they win out, they are guaranteed to move up at least 2, but will need some help to get higher.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
Remember, OU & OSU play each other, as do LSU & UA.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Those are the two I was thinking of
Still need help in two other games.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I think we can get a little bump,
considering Michigan State, Penn State, and Illinois are all ranked in the top 25.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Plus, computers are only 1/3. Humans are 2/3 and the humans love us in the polls.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Yeah, but the computers hate us
I agree that wins against those 3 will help (assuming they stay ranked). OSU winning games against other teams won’t hurt, either.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I think the Big 12 is the best conference this year.
I don’t see Oklahoma or Oklahoma State getting out of the conference unscathed.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Here's to K-State...
at 11 (IIRC) in the BCS.
Kansas25 - October 16, 2011
I went to the Baylor game.
My girlfriend’s entire family went to Kansas State. The game was enjoyable, but your quarterback fucking sucks. His motion is atrocious, and he leads all his passes. Even so, it’s a good story, and I hope they beat both OU and OSU.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Snyder is amazing.
There is so little talent on the offensive side of the ball.
After a trip to Lawrence, we go OU, OSU, A&M, and Texas. If we win two of those four, I"ll be elated. But yeah, it’s a nice story thus far.
Kansas25 - October 16, 2011
See, any of those teams can beat anybody on a bad day:
Baylor has one of the best players in the country, Kansas State’s defense is suffocating, A&M is a toss-up, Texas?, and even Missouri could beat OU or OSU. It’s a really deep conference this year.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
I think Auburn and LSU could lose, too. Other than head to head.
We’re probably getting ahead of ourselves. Saturday is a big game and will be a test.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
No shit.
Cousins is veteran enough to tear our secondary apart. And we almost always lose at East Lansing like it’s a state law or something.
That said, I don’t think anybody can stop our offense. All we need our defense to do is get 1-3 stops a game and the offense can take care of the rest.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
I think they'll be fired up about last year
And I think UW wins by 10.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
MSU's defense is great.
But they can’t score. They’ve only put up 38 in B1G play.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Did you know
Russell is #1 in the country in passer efficiency and Ball leads the country in TDs?
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
And we're the #1 scoring team in the country?
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
And White says he throws better than Ball!
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
Great idea to open that up this week.
Now next time we run a screen with White or Ball there’s going to have to be a flanker keeping an eye on Wilson, which just opens up a gap for the RB.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Agreed. I think that was brilliant to give others something else to think about.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
Classy of you two to check in at Evil BCB
But I’d expect no less from a fellow Badger.
Go Rangers!
Mapmaker - October 16, 2011 via mobile
Thanks
Ambivalence with a capital A for this series.
I can talk big about the vocal minority of militant Brewers fans, but I am friends with decent ones.
There are decent ones that come here, too.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
Badgers? Badgers? We don't need no stinkin' badgers?
(anybody know the movie reference?)
ddoubleheader - October 16, 2011
UHF, of course
Shanghai Badger - October 17, 2011
Woohoo!
Another UHF man. Great movie and greatly underappreciated movie. It’s like a less popular version of Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, only funnier.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
UHF *fan*, not man!
(grumble. Perfect spelling on every other forum, but here I spell like a 1st grader)

Took me many seasons of Seinfeld before I didn’t see Michael Richards and immediately think of Stanley Spadowski.

Yep
Supplies! is full of win. Ah, Engrish…
I loved Conan the Librarian. Gandhi II has some humor you might miss initially (like Gandhi asking for a steak, medium rare). The Rambo skit was pretty good (made funnier because the school gym teacher looked like that, same glasses, same moustache, same hair only cut shorter and with some gray in it, same mean “I can kill someone with my bare hands” attitude). Kevin McCarthy made for a great villain. UHF is part of my McCarthy trifecta (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, “Long Live Walter Jameson”, UHF).

This series has reminded me of my disdain for the Cardinals.
cubsfaninatl - October 16, 2011
That disdain should never waver. Hate them all the time - it's more fun.
scottsdalecubs - October 16, 2011
I saw Theriot going 8 fo 10 against the Phillies in the NLDS at one point and thinking, "Where was this guy in 2008?"
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
The Cardinals are so damn lucky and I think that's what annoys me.
They seem to always be able to find guys who can’t do diddly squat on other teams and yet they go to St. Louis and become solid ballplayers.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
But then
we get guys that perform elsewhere and cant do squat in a Cub uniform.
imacubman - October 17, 2011
Ron Roenicke is not big time manager
he looks Mike Quade to me but just with better players. What a horrible decision to start Marcum who was clearly done, their fundamentals stunk and all they did was talk all year. He’s been destroyed by LaRussa. This was your chance Brewers and you guys stunk, they’ll never have a better chance to make a world series.
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
Had they started Gallardo tonight, who pitches Monday?
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
you cannot bring back Marcum
can’t do it, he was done.
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
Then who? LaTroy Hawkins? Pete Vukovich? Jerry Augustine?
Someone other than Gallardo had to pitch one of two games. It’s pretty easy to say Marcum stinks, but you can’t pitch Gallardo twice. And Greinke’s been awful, too.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
i would have started narveson
and made it a bullpen game, he gave his team no chance tio win by starting marcum
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
I can see Narveson
Although he didn’t exactly light it up, did he?
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
not but you cannot start marcum
when it was obvious he was finished. that’s my point.
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
I understand
I just don’t know that there were any other options.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I think Narveson would have been better
Had he had a chance to prepare for the start….STL has trouble with lefties for some reason.
Another option is that he could have started Gallerdo on short rest and started Wolf on short rest in Game 7 and had Greinke ready just in case. Not ideal but I think it was a better option than Marcum or Narverson.
TheRiot Police - October 17, 2011
Roenicke was clearly outmanaged
jerry morales rules - October 16, 2011
I hope the Cardinals send Marmol his national league championship ring
he deserves it, the implosion on Sep 24th that would have left the Cards three back with four to go.
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
The Braves want theirs too.
cubsfaninatl - October 16, 2011
that loss really bothers me
and it would have basically knocked the cardinals out.
MikeJW - October 16, 2011
Yep.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
While that is true.
The fact of the matter is the braves didn’t handle their business. Because of that I don’t let it bother me.
cubsfaninatl - October 16, 2011
But you'll notice that no one has said anything about the Braves' collapse. It's all about the Red Sox.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
And also
when the Braves went to Philly in late august they could have pulled within like 2 games, but got swept, and it all went downhill from there.
imacubman - October 17, 2011
Oh yeah, I forgot....
Marmol was the 10th man on the Cardinals lineup for a few Cubs-Cards games this season. They couldn’t have made the postseason without him. If there’s issues, then maybe a diamond-studded championship onion ring perhaps?
ddoubleheader - October 16, 2011
remember how the brewers traded lawrie for marcum?
ha ha ha

jeffstorm2 - October 16, 2011
I wish baseball had replay.
Braun was safe and every out is huge for them now.
cubsfaninatl - October 16, 2011
So Texas is going to manhandle the Cardinals.
Tony LaRussa’s stupid micromanging isn’t going to work against their stacked lineup.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Waaay beyond hoping you're right...
now praying you’re right!!! Texas in 5?
jeffstorm2 - October 16, 2011
Ok. Too optimistic...
For sure in 6 (or less???)
jeffstorm2 - October 16, 2011
Cardinals’ offense was #1 in the NL.
Rangers were #3 in AL, but that was still nearly 100 runs more than the Cardinals.
Cardinas’ ERA+ was below league average.
Rangers’ were 3rd in all of baseball.
I like the Rangers because Cruz is on a tear, their shutdown 8-9 guys, and their starters. Since NL has home field, I’ll take Rangers in 6.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Thanks.
I don’t follow AL much (Except for AL Central). I hope you’re right! G’nite
jeffstorm2 - October 16, 2011
But how hot were the Cardinals?
Besides the usual specious muscle power, how strong was their overall lineup. I didn’t see the NLCS, but I saw the ALCS. The Rangers were like a buzzsaw attached to a locomotive. They mowed through the Tigers bullpen and their batters in most innings. I hear the pieces are being shipped back to Detroit. The last time I saw a team move like that well of a well-oiled machine, it was the 2007 Red Sox (though I see more roids in St. Louis than I do in Dallas. Might be an exposure issue, being in the Central Division).
I favor the Rangers in the WS and based on what I’ve seen, the Rangers seem incredbly strong. I rooted for the Rockies in Rocktober, and the way the Roid Sox dismembered the Rockies then reminds me of the way the Rangers defanged & declawed the Tigers now.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
I understand your frustration, but I'm looking ahead to 2012.
Incidentally, I don’t know if this has been posted anywhere else but there was one report that the Red Sox and Cubs have agreed to compensation with Jay Jackson, Ryan Flaherty and cash going to Boston for Theo. And Theo is reportedly taking 1 member of his Boston staff with him.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
I can live with that.
Let’s hope we hear tomorrow.
jpeters407 - October 16, 2011
Let's hope!
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
I will name my first born Nolan
if Texas can just win this World Series.
AussieCub - October 16, 2011
Twins are in my family & if my future wife has two boys I'm naming them Ryne and Robert. Our own "daily double."
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
Nolan backwards
is Nalon. It’s kinda close.
Nolan does have some kinda magic. Rangers sucked when W owned them, Rangers sucked when whoever the previous guy was owned them (though that guy forced the team to court, at least he was no McCourt. Of course had he been, I suspect someone would have taken some Texas Justice on him. Though if the team were in Albuquerque, the owner might be a McCloud), and Nolan Ryan buys them. Boom! Instant magic! World Series #1, World Series #2, perhaps even a trophy or two.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
My oh my Ryan Theriot is going to play in a World Series. That upsets me more than anything.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
It ain't over yet. I still wouldn't count the Brew Crew out.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011

jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
So close, yet so far...
At least Wisconsin will always have the Packers. Defeat never tasted so… cheesy.
Damn Miller Park. It’s not fortified enough. If only they battled the Cardinals from the Mars Cheese Castle…
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
i dont know what angers me more
the idea of theriot playing in a WS or the idea of braun, fielder, AND nyjer “tony danza” morgan playing in a WS
jesus christos - October 16, 2011
I have to admit I'm going to get a perverse joy of watching the Brewers & their fans look like they've just got a shot of novocaine.

Really? Because that was us a LOT
I take no joy in it.
Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
Good point.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
Texas lost to the Giants last year because of pitching. The Giants pitching was far superior. The Cardinals don't have that kind of pitching and the Rangers are better.

jesus christos - October 16, 2011
For as much as I hate the Cardinals, you gotta give them credit...
They went without Wainwright for the entire season. Can you imagine where they’d be with him? They battled with injuries and didn’t make excuses for it unlike some other teams. They were able to mix and match successfully and win the big games when they needed to. Sure, it ticks me off that Marmol blew those saves which helped put the Cardinals in this position. But it doesn’t really matter if it was the Cardinals or whoever, the Cubs still should have won those games and didn’t. This just wasn’t our year, folks. I’m more than ready to take a match to the calendar year and burn it. Looking forward to 2012 and, hopefully, an announcement soon on Epstein.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
I don't know why I'm still watching this.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
Well, at least the Bears won tonight.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
Bears are just teasing their fans
This season, they lose a few, then when their fans are starting to give up hope and think the team sucks, the win one game big, enough to string the fans along til the next loss.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
Wow, evil BCB is already recapped.

Shanghai Badger - October 16, 2011
I think Prince Fielder is all but gone from the Brewers.
jeffmills1972 - October 16, 2011
I think the more interesting thing
is to see who sets the market first, Prince or Albert.
dtpollitt - October 16, 2011
What are the odds...
One of ’em stays with their team vs. both of them ending up on different teams? Anyone know which teams want who, I mean, besides the Cubs?
I hope the Cubs focus on Fielder, not Pujols. Haven’t seen anything suspect from Fielder yet. His power comes from his girth, like Babe Ruth. Now if only he’d switch to a hickory bat (they used to use ’em before the ascension of ash. Heavier, but added more power for huskier players who had the mass to wield those clubs)
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
Well the next time we see Prince Fielder bat he might be in Cubbie blue
Good riddance, Brewers.
Chanman25 - October 16, 2011
Any chance of seeing him...
in Royal blue?
in Oaky green?
in Padres camo?
in Pirates construction colors?
Just wanted to give some disappointed folks round here a good laugh.

Mizzourah if you go to Mizzou
In all other parts of the state it is Misery.
cub in louies nest - October 17, 2011 via mobile
Ah, the state of Misery
I should have known, it is so close to the state of Denial (they do call it Little Egypt in southern Illinois). I’m a little confused as to where the state of Confusion lies relative to those.

Cubbinstrongsince86 - October 16, 2011

Heres to a Rangers sweep!!!!
Fuck the cardinals
chit0wn - October 16, 2011
Odds of Ranger sweep
are probably better than the 2010 Giants, 2009 Yankees, 2008 Phillies sweeping.
It does look like it’s gonna be a Texas barbeque. I heard they’re going to be grilling chicken. Be sure to pick up your wings, legs, or breasts early to get the good pieces and not the ones potentially pumped full of hormones. Be thankful they’re not cantaloupes. It’s always the fruits you least suspect. Cantaloupes… they were such a quiet bunch…
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
I hate the F---n Cardinals.
You gotta understand, in the community I live in, they are everywhere. Cardinal flags hang from front doors. Families have their pictures made in matching Cardinal wear. My Facebook page tonight is just disgusting. I just had to log off and get out before I vomited. Every fair weather Cardinal fan is coming out to join the die-hards. I was at the game on September 24 and all I can say is I hope Carlos Marmol is f—king happy. If they win the World Series (God, please, no!!!!) I may have to leave the area until April.
sicubsfan - October 16, 2011
They have fair weather Cardinal fans there?
I thought Missouri was always dyed in the dark blue area… with miscolored birds (I guess cardinals aren’t native to MO). I have a hard time imagining anyone not being a raging Cardinals fan in Missouri or Cards Country hinterlands like southern Illinois, western Kentucky, parts of Oklahoma, Indiana, Arkansas and wherever else (unless they’re not a sports fan). They seem like an all-or-none kind of fanbase.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
I guess there must be.
A DJ on one of our local radio stations was on a rant one day last week about closet Cardinal fans. He said they shouldn’t be allowed to wear red.
cub in louies nest - October 17, 2011 via mobile
It happens any time a team goes deep into the playoffs.
So this isn’t surprising.
Al Yellon - October 17, 2011
I know, I just meant with the Cards
St. Louis and all around there seems all on or all off with the Cardinals. It didn’t seem like there would be an inbetween. Strangely, even in 2006 in central/southern Illinois I never remembered seeing those miscolored birds popping out of the woodwork, err, farmfields & swamps.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
And we'll never get to see
a sausage race in the World Series. I was really looking forward to that.
ddoubleheader - October 17, 2011
Obsession
Card fans here in central Ill. seem to care more about ribbing the Cub fans than beating the Brewers. I remember the last time they won in 2006 Fox showed a sign in the stands saying, " Don’t you wish you were here Cub fans?" Even during the ultimate event(WS) they had to put the Tigers aside and jab at Cub fans. What morans. Myself, if the Cubs EVER get there, the Cards will be the LAST thing I’ll be thinking about.
KedzieKid - October 17, 2011
White Sox fans are the same way.
South Side Expat - October 17, 2011
I can vouch for Cubs vs. Cards
I know the genesis of the rivalry down there too. It’s more an anti-Cubs thing than a pro-Cards thing.
1) It’s proximity. Many of the Card cities in Illinois, when they want to go to “the big city”, go to St. Louis (zoo, baseball, museums, airport, etc). That’s just how baseball geography is.
2) Downstate vs. upstate. Downstate (central & southern Illinois) tends to hate the influence Chicago has on the state and its political atmosphere. Of course, their griping is a little bizarre since what, 10/12ths the state’s population is in the Chicago metro area and their politicians are just as corrupt (yes, Springfield is a cesspool, an apocalyptic cesspool, but still a cesspool). Southern IL has a good ol boy crony system for local politics.

White Sox fans are the same way… except they can actually root for their team and not against the other team. They have some legitimate gripes, given they won a World Series before the Cubs did after a nearly long drought and it was treated with ‘meh’ by everyone (and the 2M Blackhawks fans appearing out of nowhere was salt in the wound. I still wonder where all those people came from. Almost never saw a hockey fan or heard hockey talked about). And the White Sox beat some strong teams on the way to the WS and they swept their opponent too.
(and not talked about, at least their sluggers were clean by all indications, Thomas & Thome. Cubs can’t say the same about Sosa, but Cardinals are one to speak…)

The Cardinals should send Marmol his share of the postseason check.

They can pay him....
in donuts. They have to plan for being contenders next year, and with Epstein with the Cubs, they have to find ways to weaken a rival that will be growing in strength (I don’t think 2012 will be a good year for the Cubs, but unless Epstein leaves his sense in Boston, it should at least be somewhat better than 2011).

You might as well call Dallas my second city( except the Cowboys-yuck)
This is the second time in a row that I’ve rooted for a team on the big stage. I also rooted for the Mavs against that ugly three-headed trio from Miami.

If the Rangers win,
2011 is going to be considered an epic year for Dallas sports.
