I like good, down-to-the-last-day pennant races; earlier this month it didn't look like we'd have any, but some good runs by teams like the Giants and Rays helped baseball go into the final week of the season with the wild cards still in doubt.
At the same time, I'm always happy to see the Cardinals eliminated from postseason play, and it's even better when the Cubs do it. Friday night brought the bizarre sight of a full house at Miller Park in Milwaukee cheering loudly for the Cubs when the Cubs weren't even playing there.
The Brewers defeated the Marlins in Milwaukee in a game that ended about 9:40 p.m., clinching a tie for the division title for the Brewers. At the time, the Cubs and Cardinals were still locked in a 1-1 tie, but very shortly thereafter, Alfonso Soriano smacked a three-run homer off Kyle McClellan. If the roof hadn't been closed at Miller Park you might have been able to hear the cheering all the way to St. Louis.
The Cubs added a run in the ninth inning and defeated the Cardinals 5-1; that made the Brewers NL Central champions, only the second division title in their history and first as an NL team. I'm not fond of the Brewers and their antics, but congratulations to them. They earned it; now they'll await their first-round playoff opponent. They currently lead the Diamondbacks by one game in the overall standings; if it finishes that way and the Braves win the wild card, Milwaukee will play Atlanta. If Arizona passes them, the Brewers play the Phillies; if, somehow, the Cardinals or Giants pass up the Braves (even more unlikely after both of them lost Friday night), the Brewers and Diamondbacks would meet up.

Further congratulations are due Starlin Castro, who took all the suspense out of waiting for him to reach the 200-hit milestone by hitting Chris Carpenter's second pitch in the first inning for a single. It is the 21st 200-hit season in Cubs history; it's been done by 17 different players (Billy Herman did it three times; Kiki Cuyler twice). Castro, at 21, is the youngest to do so and, hopefully, it is the first of many for him. He singled again in the ninth inning to drive in the Cubs' fifth and final run. With five games remaining in the season, he has a chance to move up several spots on the team all-time list. At 201, he is currently tied with Charlie Hollocher (1922), Billy Williams (1964) and Bill Buckner (1982).
Kudos also to Ryan Dempster, who finally had a good game against the Cardinals this season after two bad starts earlier in the year. He gave up just one run in six innings, even while struggling with command (six walks). That leaves Dempster just 3.1 innings short of the precious 200-inning milestone that Mike Quade rejiggered his entire rotation for. Dempster will start the final game of the season Wednesday in San Diego.
By then we will have actually seen Steve Clevenger start a game. Len Kasper mentioned on the telecast that Clevenger is likely to start Monday's game in San Diego, with Geovany Soto starting the rest of the way. So -- for those of you who have been on Koyie Hill's case all year, you have probably seen the last of him in a Cubs uniform.
The Cubs will have a rare opportunity the rest of the weekend. The Cardinals' elimination number from the wild card race is three; if the Cubs can beat St. Louis twice while the Braves win once (or one Cubs win and two Atlanta victories), the Cubs will have helped eliminate St. Louis from two playoff races in one weekend. Good times.
They'll play again early this afternoon. The game preview will post at 10:45 a.m. CDT.

nice win!
It couldn’t be more fitting for the cubs to be the team to knock St Louis out of at least the NL central race. Let’s hope for another win today and make it that much harder for them to get the wild card.

Sweet victory last night

I'm not seeing this on the mainpage. I had to get here via facebook.
Not sure if I’m having a glitch or the site is.
Arbusto - September 24, 2011
Must be the site
It isn’t displaying on the main page for me either. I think once Al creates the post, he has to also has to publish it to the main page, and there probably was a problem with that part of it.
adam316 - September 24, 2011
Via the mobile version of BCB - No problems noticed
eths - September 24, 2011 via mobile
Yeah it seems to be displaying now
adam316 - September 24, 2011
I had the same problem for a while.
When I posted it, it was on the front page. Then it disappeared. Now it appears to be back.
I know SBN was doing some system maintenance last night. Maybe that has something to do with it.
The game preview for today is scheduled for 10:45 am central time. Please email me if you don’t see it a few minutes after that.

Does not make up for this dismal season, but
eliminating the Cards feels good, especially doing it in StL.
lookingdeadred - September 24, 2011
Eliminating the Cardinals twice...
a very hollow victory for me. I can’t get excited over that after this year.
rlpete - September 24, 2011
Look at it this way..
.. sweeping your biggest rival at the most important time of the season? It will be the new GM’s justification for bringing Quade back to finish his contract, rather than paying him off to go away. So we’ve got that to look forward to.
The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street - September 24, 2011
God...I hope you're wrong about The Quades return...
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
I doubt it. That’s Jim Hendry’s MO, not other GM’s.
Al Yellon - September 24, 2011
/silently praying for Al to be right here.../
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
If we hire some GM who can't see how bad Quade is...
I don’t want to think about that. I think the Ricketts are smarter than that.
LT - September 24, 2011
Good Morning LT
Lets hope you’re right
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
right back at ya
LT - September 24, 2011
what to make of Sori?
25 HR 84 RBI pretty productive yet we all want him gone, badly….at least he’s improved his trade value as a DH. I think he’ll have a similar year next year low BA and OBP and shaky defense make him a liability but he sure tries!! Coulda been a Hall of Famer if ever learned some plate discipline.
QuincyCub - September 24, 2011
yeah
nice numbers but not for 18 mill a year.and yet the cubs are willing to give him away and pay most of his salary.gotta be an a.l. team out there who would want that kind of production out of their dh for 5 mill a year.we’ll see what the new gm can do.what a mess this team is.with ramirez and pena both possibly gone the remaining players better start thinking SMALL BALL.
NOMAR - September 24, 2011
Let's be realistic.
The Cubs are going eat most of Zambrano’s contract. They can’t afford to eat Soriano’s too. And if Ramirez walks, they need somebody who can hit for power. If the re-sign Ramirez, they’ll definitely won’t be able to afford to dump Sori.
He’ll be back.
Clark Addison - September 24, 2011
Z's deal...
… is just one year’s worth. Maybe they can save half of it.
Thus I think they could afford to eat 75% of Soriano’s.
Al Yellon - September 24, 2011
Love beating the Cardinals.
A LOT.
mrcubsfan - September 24, 2011 via mobile
Weird feelings....
I would rather the brewers face the diamondbacks….because I’m going to pull for the NL central in the playoffs. So weirdly I’ll be rooting for the Cards to get the wild card.
epsilon - September 24, 2011
I too will be rooting for Da Crew in Playoffs
I’m thinking their SPs and Pen takes them further than the Cards will/would go…so gimme Atlanta in the WC if you please. I don’t dislike ATL and we’ve fared well with them in the post-season…we’ve just gotta find a way to bury that GD Tomahawk Chop!!!
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
No can do
Tigers? Maybe the Phiwwies?
timh815 - September 24, 2011
Phils
must be favored… but, a boy can dream, can’t he? :] (As usual, Yanks in AL I’s guess)
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
I don't like the Brewers.
So anyone who plays them, I’m rooting for that team.
Al Yellon - September 24, 2011
Tho I don't
really like the Crew…I do like how they were able to improve (rather dramatically) in so short a period of time. (equals hope for our Cubbies)
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
Did they improve that much
or did the division fizzle?
timh815 - September 24, 2011
Touche!
(But, I think a little of both)
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
Adding 2 starting pitchers was a major leg up for the Brewers
The offense, they already had.
Unfortunately, the Cubs need both…..
ClarkFan - September 24, 2011
^This^
(And they didn’t have the Soriano, Fuke, Z, Demp, Aram etc messes to deal with…)
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
Shocker!
Your hatred bleeds through regularly. I think you do a very good job of not having it effect your writing, but your comments are predictably biased.

Easy Ed - September 24, 2011
No sophomore or SI jinx for Starlin...
What a talent! Now, if he can just use the last five games to go into double-digits in triples, the look of his stat line will be all the more impressive as he heads into a Year 3 that should look somthing like this: .322/.385; 25 HR; 83 RBI; 32 2B; 13 3b; 17/23 SB; .820 OPS. In short, Hanley Ramirez without the attitude.
ernaga - September 24, 2011
not so sure.
Yes his offensive WAR is 4.0, a great start for a 21 year old but his defensive WAR is -1.8 worse than his rookie defensive WAR of -1.2
This means Castro at 2B is giving up 18 more runs against MLB average defensive shortstop but is producing more offensive WAR than A Ramirez who has an offensive WAR of 3.6 and a defensive WAR of -0.9….
As Ramirez has said he is seeking greener happenings somewhere else, (and a WAR analysis says that is a good thing), move Castro over to 3B…Cubs will benefit in that I suspect that Castro will improve 25% in offensive WAR to a 5.0 level while if he just does what Ramirez does it equals some of ARamirez’s best WAR years of ’04, ’07 & ’08
Cubs need to look at SS even moving Barney to SS would improve defensive WAR by 2 pts….or acquiring Reyes who has a 5.0 WAR and a 5.5 offensive WAR and -.05 defensive….move Reyes to 2B and Castro to 3B and WAR says you have vastly improved the team.
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
correction
change to Castro at SS….
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
Just from watching him
I think his defense has been much better in the second half of the season than in the first half. I think that he will improve defensively, a lot, in the upcoming years. I wouldn’t yet start talking about moving him anywhere.
jerry morales rules - September 24, 2011
Ivy Walls is on the "Move Castro" bandwagon
in fact he is driving it.
I would not touch Castro until a new regime gives him at least one season to see what they can do. He has improved this year. Moving him now at his age is dumb especially considering the fact that 2012 could be another bad season. There is no point in it.
rlpete - September 24, 2011
the problem is the math just isn't working on keeping him there
this is not me and some imaginism movement, simply looking at the math, -1.8 WAR defensively, down 0.6 from his rookie year is not a trend that is productive….regardless what your eyes are seeing.
His value right now is his developing offensive WAR now at 4.0 at 21 years old, that is the reality….regardless of the wishful thinking.
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
You forgot one piece of info - 21
He’s developing. The defensive WAR has a very good chance of improving, maybe even to a very positive number.
jerry morales rules - September 24, 2011
He’s got everything necessary to be a great defensive SS. He has to improve mentally and hopefully that comes with age. I could see him being in the MVP conversation eventually. I’m not a Cubs fan and he’s one of my favorite players in baseball.
ol Pete - September 24, 2011
Coaching.....
ClarkFan - September 24, 2011
You'd have to adjust your WAR estimates for Castro by moving him to 3B too, though
As those are based on position played. Castro’s offense is less valuable at 3B than it is at SS. Same for Reyes. So it’s not an apples to apples comparison between Castro’s WAR and Ramirez’s WAR.
You only would move Castro if you can add more WAR by doing so (assuming the same cost). Letting Ramirez walk and moving Castro to 3B and Barney to 2B would be a significant step backward, because the options at 2B are not going to be as good as Ramirez. Reyes might be an upgrade over Ramirez, but I doubt it. You’re giving away a LOT of offensive production (Ramirez has typically been a .370+ wOBA guy, Reyes has been a very up and down hitter year-to-year). It’s also important to note that Reyes has battled a lot of injuries the last three years.
We would definitely be better defensively with Reyes instead of Ramirez. But I don’t think WAR definitively says that replacing Ramirez with Reyes makes us a better team at all, let alone vastly better.
SouthernCub - September 24, 2011
edit: Barney to SS - not Barney to 2B
Obviously Barney is already at 2B.
SouthernCub - September 24, 2011
It's not unusual for young shortstops to make lots of errors.
And the Valentine thing has been blown way out of proportion. Castro has great range and a great arm.
Ernie Banks made more errors in his first two years than Castro. He went on to set records (since broken) for the highest shortstop fielding percentage and fewest errors in a season.
Castro is the best thing that’s happened to Cubs shortstopping since Ernie.
Clark Addison - September 24, 2011
you are absolutely correct....
and yet it appears Ramirez is walking anyway….
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
Maybe...
or maybe he’s just negotiating. We’ll see. I’m hoping it’s just negotiating, because it will be very difficult to field a better team next without Ramirez.
SouthernCub - September 24, 2011
of course he is but
even one year at $16 M with his WAR is not worth it.
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
SouthernCub, this might surprise you but if Castro remained in the lead off slot his wOBA is .399
that would lead all NL 3rd baseman since Sandoval is .380 and Ramirez is .371 and Jones is .351
the argument goes to an interesting one if Castro’s combined lead off and number two hitting slots are grouped where his wOBA is .372 on 492 PA….
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
Why not just give Clevenger ALL the starts in San Diego?
All freaking 3 of them. Its not like San Diego is in the playoff race.
Nunyabidness - September 24, 2011
Because.... ummmm....
Koyie Hill…. errrr….
Got nuthin
timh815 - September 24, 2011
The frightening possibility exists
that we could lose Soto tho, don’t it? I dunno…I got a hunch Cubs Org will “give up 2012” for a chance to contend sooner rather than later…
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
Hill's composite career WAR is -2.6
and 5 years on the Cubs he has a -2.1 which translates that an average AAAA or minor league true prospect that over the 5 years Hill is responsible for 2 more losses than a replacement player would have been.
This year it is -0.8 or basically 8 runs or almost 1 win….
Ivy Walls - September 24, 2011
G'mornin' Ivy Walls
I guess there you go again…muddyin’ up many a fantasy thru the use of facts! :] Yes, Hillie cannot, must not be our starter in 2012.

Will Busch have
‘Going away day’ for FA vets who’ve been with the team more than a decade, like senior day in college?

Haha!
…whoya thinkin’ of timh815??? Hmmm…? (My gut says AP stays in StL when all’s said n done).

timh815 - September 24, 2011
Cards bullpen sunk 'em
they blew a ton of games with franklin early on and now these last 2….they probably have had one of worst ’pens in NL and yet they hung in there with good rotation and lineup.
Matt Holliday however may turn into their Soriano in another year or two. Mark my word. Alan Craig is a more productive player right now.
QuincyCub - September 24, 2011
matt holliday has more hitting talent in his left thumb than soriano has in his entire body
jesus christos - September 24, 2011
Finally! Hope for Cubs next year! Also observed: Pigs flying and a freeze warning in Hell... :]
jeffstorm2 - September 24, 2011
why the objection to changing the rotation to give Dempster the final start?
if you review the schedule, you will see that the pitcher that would have otherwise been in line to pitch the finale is tonight’s pitcher, Rodrigo Lopez. We have already established that Lopez is nothing more than filler, and unlikely to anything more than a spring training invite in 2012. Nobody else was affected by the juggling. I am not a big Quade fan, and I hope that he is replaced soon, however with regards to giving Dempster the final 2011 start, Quade got this 100% correct.
holy mackeral - September 24, 2011
Lopez's turn could have been skipped entirely with the off day.
