Cardinals Dig The Long Ball; Two Home Runs Defeat Cubs

So what would you have done?

Randy Wells had thrown 96 pitches (62 strikes) through seven innings, but had just allowed a solo homer to Yadier Molina, tying the score 2-2. The Cubs didn't score in the eighth, and Wells was due up third in the ninth.

Leave him in, or take him out?

Mike Quade chose to leave him in. Wrong call, Mike. Rafael Furcal hit Wells' second pitch over the right field wall for another homer. The Cubs went down meekly in the ninth inning and the Cardinals had a 3-2 win over the Cubs, their second straight come-from-behind one-run win.

Instead of helping eliminate the Cardinals from the wild-card race, the Cubs put St. Louis right back in it by basically giving them two of the three games. The Nationals shut out the Braves 3-0 Sunday afternoon. So, with three games left in the regular season, the Braves lead the Cardinals by just one game in the NL wild-card chase. Worse for the Braves, they have to host a Phillies team that has to be upset at the eight-game losing streak they just broke today against the Mets, while the Cardinals visit Houston to play an Astros club that lost its 104th game of the year to the Rockies -- 19-3.

If you believe in baseball momentum, it would appear the Cardinals have it.

Star-divide

The Cubs fashioned a nice little lead Sunday, too. Carlos Pena walked leading off the fourth -- his 99th BB of the year -- and made his way to third on a single to left, nice baserunning, and scored on a sacrifice fly. After the Cardinals tied it in the fifth, the Cubs took a 2-1 lead on a Marlon Byrd double and a Starlin Castro single. Castro's hit gave him 203 for the year, 65 RBI and it was the 37th consecutive game in which he had reached base.

All of that looked pretty good for the Cubs to send Cardinals fans home unhappy in their final home game of the year. But after St. Louis' rally, there's a chance they could play again in St. Louis. They gave Albert Pujols a standing ovation each time he came to the plate, leading the Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer to tweet:

Standing O for Albert before 1st AB in what could be final home game as a Card. Visions of Rami at Wrigley Wed.

Well, that makes no sense. If he's talking about this Wednesday, the Cubs are in San Diego. If he was talking about last Wednesday, Aramis didn't play in that game. If he was trying to be sarcastic, he needed this:

Such is our lot in our lives as Cubs fans this season.

Wells got credit for a complete game for his effort today; by retiring the final three batters he faced after Furcal's home run, he lowered his season ERA below five -- just barely, at 4.99. In 14 starts since the All-Star break, Wells' ERA is 4.04 and his WHIP is 1.213, much closer to his performance from last year, and an indication he can be a capable No. 4 starter. Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster give them a No. 2 and a No 3; if they can just find that elusive "ace"...

Incidentally, the Cubs now have four complete games in 2011, two from Wells and two from Garza. Each has one in a win and one in a loss. The last time before this year that a Cubs team had more than three CG in a season was in 2005, when they had eight (three by Greg Maddux, two by Carlos Zambrano, and one each by Mark Prior, Glendon Rusch and Sergio Mitre).

There's your blast from the past for today. The Cubs will have to sweep the Padres in San Diego to finish the season with fewer than 90 losses; Quade insists he's going to play the kids on Monday. So there's that.

Enjoy Cubs baseball while it's here. Bad as it has been, we will miss it when it's gone. And enjoy the two wild card races, which are both going to go down to the last day, or so it would appear.

Two depressing losses in a row.

The 2011 Cubs had a chance to knock their biggest rival out of the race. Instead they roll over and play dead. Typical of this dead in the water club. Now the Phillies decide who they want to play in the first round

Right.

If the Cardinals win the wild card, the Phillies would play them. If the Braves win it, the Phillies play… well, that’s out of their control. It would be whoever has the worse record between the Brewers and Diamondbacks.

It should will be the Brewers with the better record.

They are up by 1.5 games. But obviously you never know.

D'backs are winning today..

… if that holds, it will be a one game difference. If the teams wind up tied, the Brewers get the No. 2 seed.

Actually, that isn't right.

Head to head record is the tiebreaker. AZ won four of the seven games the two teams played this year. If AZ and MIL wind up with the same record, the D’backs get the No. 2 seed.

In the AL, if the Rangers and Tigers wind up tied, the No. 2 seed goes to Detroit (6-3 over TEX during the season).

Is that the same tiebreaker for where you draft? And how is it decided for teams that don't play?

Col 72-87
Oak 71-87 (currently losing)
Fla 71-88
Pitt 71-88
KC70-89
Cubs 70-89
SD 69-89 (Currently Losing)
Balt 67-92

Who says these games are meaningless. right now Baltimore has the 4th pick Colorado the 11th. The Cubs could fall anywhere in that range.

Yeah, that's all pretty close.

I’m not sure how they break ties for those, since not all those teams play head-to-head.

As much as I'll miss baseball, I'll be glad to put 2011 behind me.

Right now, I’m just hopeful that the Cubs get a new GM soon and then a new manager.

surprised he stayed with wells

furcal probably not as much a HR threat against a lefty, either. Oh well I have Card fans in family they are happy. they have a good enough team to make playoffs and give Philly a tussle in first round if those two match up.

Also, the Phillies are cold right now...

… even though they won today, they just lost eight straight including losing a series to the Astros — at home.

They need to play hard this week to get ready for the playoffs. There’s a certain Cubs team that failed to do that after clinching, in a similar circumstance — could have helped choose their opponent — with disastrous results.

Yes, once you clinch give people days off,

get your rotation set, but keep everyone sharp as well. How often do NFL teams rest their starters only to lose in the first round of the playoffs to teams that had to play out just to get in? Packers anyone?

Don't

Don’t bring up bad memories. That’s an old ax ground to the ground that I had forgotten about til now.

sad

as i sit here in fla watching a team with half the payroll of the cubs chasing down the sox.and ready to catch them.and my guys are going home.such is the life of a cub fan.someday the ones that stay the course WILL be rewarded someday.

Tampa Bay is good because they were so bad all those years...

And they kept getting high draft pick after high draft pick. Eventually, things will even out because they’re no longer getting the high draft picks.

Key to this was they made good draft choices
Key was they developed their players, and

traded for others when they couldn’t afford what they had anymore.

Rays know what they are doing.

Sure they got Longoria, Upton early in the 1st round, however they got Hellickson in the 4th, Jennings in the 10th, Shields in the 16th and drafted Ellsbury in the 23rd but did not sign.
I would love to have Friedman as the GM

Matt Moore in the 8th round.

Barring injury he is going to be very good. You are right they had some high picks but a LOT of very good lower round picks. They also understand the value of stockpiling picks. Not every player is going to develop but the odds are better when you can pick a lot of players.

I want whoever made those draft decisions

If that was Friedman, great. If someone else, I want that person.

and yes

al this would be a good time to play the phillies

Quade gets another loss for keeping a pitcher in too long . Like a broken record.

I am predicting it right now. Cardinals are going to the playoffs.

I hope you are wrong.

This is beginning to look like 2006 when they had no right to be in the playoffs and then win it all.

It's a little different.

In 2006, the Cardinals lost 10 of their last 14 and just squeaked in. This year, they have gone 21-8 since August 25.

This year’s comp to the 2006 Cardinals would be the Red Sox, if they hang on and get in.

Or the Braves.

I just have this funny feeling that we are going to have to listen to the Cardinal nation for the next three or four weeks.

Nah...

Pujols pulls a Buckner and lets a ball go through his legs, allowing the Astros to win the last game of the year 5-4 and eliminating the Cards from post-season play. Pujols is booed at the airport, which pisses him off and he then “takes his talents to South Beach” and signs a $220,000,000 contract to play for the Miami Marlins and their new manager, Ozzie Guillen, in their brand spanking new stadium.

You heard it here first. ; )

...for 8 years, by the way
Nah, that's only 5 years' worth of money...
$44M a year? Not even Soriano is worth that much.
These past 2 games...

…and allowing the Cardinals to have a legitimate shot at the Braves now…gives this season that awful after taste I use to get after one of my ex-mother-in-law’s casseroles.
I’ve got the Yankee’s hoodie and cap all ready for next weekend. Hey, it’s allowed. I’ve rooted for the Cubs for 40+ years, soooooo, I can root for the Yankees when the Cubs season is done…so there!

Why isn't the kiddie lineup in the whole SD series?

HEY QUADE! YOUR KIDDIE LINEUP USUALLY PLAYS BETTER THAN YOUR CRAPPY VET LINEUP!!!!!!!

And when you say kiddie lineup that means NO MARLON BYRD OR PENA!!!!!

Lets see if that can be handled……My guess would be a HUGE NO!!!!!!!!!!

Feel pretty strongly about that, TJ?
Whatever gave you that idea?
I would think you would feel the same way....
In this case, yes.

There’s no reason to not play the kids every game in the SD series.

agreed....So why not do it?
Duuuuuhhh....tryin' to catch the Pirates...did you forget?
Quade believes the vets deserve to play.

He also believes he deserves to come back next year. Clearly he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Well we have seen the lineups....
Or his pitching decisions?

Managing of the pen?

The Way he treats his players?

I really don't understand

why he thinks the vets ‘deserve’ to play. What have they done to deserve playing time?

Years in the league, I guess.
Quade move past Marshall yet, Al?
He's number #1 in my book

Of course time makes that easier since he is the freshest on my mind.

He's really, really close.
Whats funny is

the kiddies act like grown men more often then some of the Vets on this team.

Hey Soriano shut your mouth about batting 7th you big baby your lucky you are even playing baseball right now

Hey ARam good luck on that big contract next year The team that sign you will be a bust next year or re-signs you.

Hey Big Z havent heard anything from you for a couple of months because you cant control your estrogen levels

The rest of you vets just make to much money for your play.

You told them!
Here is what's funny.

The kids act like grown men more often than some of the veterans on this team. Hey, Soriano, shut your mouth about batting seventh, you big baby. You’re lucky you are even playing baseball right now. Hey, Aram, good luck on that big contract next year. The team that signs or re-signs you will be a bust next year. Hey, Big Z, I haven’t heard anything from you for a couple of months because you cannot control your estrogen levels. The rest of you vets just make too much money for your level of play.

FTFT

tsnhks for crorcntig my hrrolbe garmmer
Looking for the best contract is not immature.

It’s perfectly sensible for Aramis to look for the best long-term deal he can find. The only reason young players don’t do it is that they’re not allowed to test the free agent waters.

I agree with you

Between him and management why wasn’t he traded this year. Why stay on this team or why keep him on this team All he cares about is the money he doesn’t care about if he wins.

could be worse

we could be red sox fans

The Red Sox are looking more and more like the Mets of 2007.
I'll gladly suffer through this kind of

choke job in exchange for the feeling of winning two WS titles in the last decade.

Just to help you out, because you need it....

Quade….this is what a kiddie lineup looks like.

Castro SS
Campana CF
LaHair 1B
Colvin RF
Montenez LF
Barney 2B
DJ 3B
Clevenger C
Coleman P

Is that a good lineup? No

Is that the team I want next year? No

Would I rather watch that for the whole series in SD rather thatn see Soto, Hill, Aram, Pena, Soriano, Baker, DeWitt, and Byrd? Absolutely 100% YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Mike! You rode your vets hard and they got you 5th place, your buddy fired and your job is in danger…..So of course you will not start the lineup I said…..
You will play your buddies Tueday and Wednesday and some in Monday’s lineup…..
And nobody will be surprised….

I think Quade ought to pull a lineup out of a hat a la Billy Martin.

He couldn’t do much worse.

pretty sure he has been doing that all year
has colving played at all i havent seen him in action for quite a while
20 at bats all of September.
Because we are not out of it yet!
Because we are not out of it yet!
Do LaHair and Montanez count as kids?

I do want to see them play though. Has Clevenger played at all? If not why bring him up and waste an option?

The are kids in the sense they are new and the Cubs vets mostly suck, so why not?
TJ I agree they should play,

just giggin ya a little about them being kids.

I know...just so sick of this team and the way its run.....I feel like I am watching the Royals all the time....
But I like the Royals

and they are going to be good when their pitching prospects catch up to their hitters. They are going in the right way. Especially of they can convince their kids to stick together.

Yeah, the Royals have awesome prospects.

The Cubs don’t.

But it is getting better.

You can’t complain about the depth of our draft and signings.

No complaints from me.

It’ll take a few years for those guys to get to Wrigley, though. The upper levels are pretty weak.

Agreed, Iowa is devoid of ML talent and has been used to

store too many players that can fill the back end of a roster, but have no real future. I hope some of those newly drafted players might be ready by 2013, and have no doubt BJax will be in Chicago next year.

You guys are right....I was thinking of a small market team that usually sucks...But even they are in a better spot than the Cubs...Just like the Pirates.

The Astros are more fun to watch.

I cant think of a team that was run worse this season top to bottom than the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets probably were close.
Maybe but its sad that we are where we are at
If

If Colvin doesn’t play in San Diego, then I think there must be something wrong. It isn’t Quade to just ice any of the players. This would be a failure of the media to tell us what is going on!

There are quite a few players on the veterans list who I don’t want back, not all though. One thought would be for Quade to play the vets, they impress, and then the Padres can sign them for next year.

I would do that except have Reed over Montanez.

Montanez sucks and is old. Johnson has actually played well and deserves to play over Byrd.

Montenez NEVER plays....if he is here, let the guy start on minor league night.

It matches the coaching staff

there's a very good reason why he never plays
Not good at washing cars?

Pitchers don’t like him?
name is not conducive to a good nickname?

Reed never starts and he actually deserves it.
He starts enough.....and yes he beat out both Soriano and Byrd for a job A LONG time ago..

But his contract was not big enough.

GO HAWKS!

Ooops……..wrong sport. Sorry couldn’t pass that up.

Didn’t watch the game today…….so I’m sure I didn’t miss much. Just waiting on the off season to see who the new GM will be & hopefully a new manager. Once that’s done all the other pieces will fall in place or it better.

Enjoying a Hawks preseason game now.

I just know I don't want Mike Quade back for 2012...

Whoever the GM is, I hope he/she picks the best guy for the job. I just don’t want to see #8 in the dugout next year.

Neither do I

nor do I want any of those so called coaches back that are warming the bench with Quade.

agreed....Dernier perhaps?
Maybe

Dernier, but he’s the ONLY one. The rest of them………no way Jose!

How about Strode?

He looks good holding his clip board when the bullpen warms up.

he's done a hell of a job of reminding marmol to throw only fastballs to theriot
I know we all have dumped on Quade

but in the ninth he sends Reed up to pinch hit against Motte. Motte against righthanders has a .161 average against. Against lefthanders it is .270. Reed is 8 for 41 this month. I just though give Colvin a shot, good power and a better match up. Oh well I digress.
Can’t stand the Cards and the Cubs just gave them two games.
Hey Mike going to play the kids tomorrow, well your two months late.

BUT REED IS A VET !!!!!!!
I have no problem leaving Wells in

He gave up a solo HR. He was not losing it. He could have put in Cashner and he could have given up 2 runs. Quade has done many stupid thing, this was not one of them. It could have gone either way.

Go Rays & Packers

Rays, yes.

Packers? Not so much.

That reminds me

I will have to collect my free “entree” next year from your betting against the Packers

Double or nothing this year?
Think about that Al.

You might be better off paying your debt. Unless the Pack has to win the Super Bowl.

Well,

Did you guys have a wager on today’s game, or not?

Nope

I was going to s spot him 7 points too, but did not get around to it.

Double or nothing how?

You lost on the playoff game, Bears are not making the playoff.

Happy to double or nothing on the next Bears & Packers game though.

There's a new sherrif in the NFL North...and they go by the name of the Detroit Lions.
We can always find another thing to bet on.
Attendance!
Don't tempt me.

Maybe ticket pricing?

Quade wants Pena to have 30 HR this year. That's why he will continue to play him.
So he's playing the role of Bruce Kimm...

… who did the same thing for Fred McGriff.

The move to get Wells to 135 innings paid off!
This team is so pathetic

You want to know what is meant when someone says “That team has no heart?” Watch this team play.

I hope at least half the roster is gone next year, especially anyone labeled as a “team leader.”

Hate to say it.

But I really don’t care anymore.

I haven't cared in a while.
i had no idea joey gathright was still in baseball
Ugh

cst_cubs cst_cubs
Cubs go 2-7 at Busch this year with 4 one-run losses, all 4 w/ winning run in Cards’ final AB — 3 by walkoff.

I think we all called the final AB losses
You gotta admit

the momentum is swinging the Cards’ way. Two comeback wins versus two Braves losses to the Nats. The Braves are facing the Phillies and the Cardinals are facing the craptastic Astros.

In fairness to the Astros

… they did win a series from the Phillies at home this month.

We'll miss Cubs baseball when it's gone?

Really? After this season you still saying that? I’m certainly not going to miss watching this team lose or reading about how they lost.

Nope. I'll look forward to baseball season

and I’m interested to see what changes are made, but I won’t miss this season.

I won't miss this season either.

But I will miss seeing Cubs baseball. I trust you can see the difference.

I want to be excited about next year...

please TR make some Sweeping changes, get us a GREAT GM, Please Great GM get us some Great Players and a Great manager. Make me care again.

But Cubs baseball has been largely poor

I do miss GOOD Cubs baseball, something I’ve missed for 3 years now.

I won't miss seeing Cubs baseball the way it has been played the last two years

It’s awful

True.

I still miss baseball when it’s not here. Good or bad, it’s still baseball.

I agree

Bad baseball is still better than no baseball. I don’t follow any other sport very closely anymore. I miss when baseball isn’t around.

Unfortunately

I can’t say that i’m going to miss this season much either, hopefully an active off season can help rekindle some semblance of hope

I for one am glad the Cardinals took 2-3...

the Cubs didnt roll over on them, they played them close, the Cardinals earned that 2-3. I’m a division supporter ( except the Reds), if the Cubs can’t/won’t win the series then i hope its a team from the division. So i hope the Braves get crushed by the Phillies and that gives the NL central a 50% shot of getting to the World Series.

Nope.

Not a fan of the Brewers or Cardinals. I hope if both teams do get in, they both get swept in the first round.

No brainer: In a tied game there's no justification to let the pitcher hit in the ninth inning.

The only exception would be if the pitcher is throwing a no-hitter. Unless that pitcher is as good a hitter as Babe Ruth was (or perhaps Dontrelle Willis) he shouldn’t be near that batting box. Yesterday’s was another example of what Quade has cost this team this season.

That situation did not exist yesterday.

Wells batted in the 7th inning, not the 8th or 9th.

My bad.

I stopped watching and thought you meant he pitched in the last inning.

I thought you meant Wells hit in the last inning (8th).

Obviously he didn’t. He was due up 4th in the 9th. He didn’t have to.

Totally OT

We are in San Diego for the next two games. Went to Little Italy for dinner and who do we meet, but Tommy Lasorda. He was right at the next table! As it was outdoor seating, he was easily noticed and already taking pictures and signing someone else’s autograph, so we went up to talk to him as well. He asked if we were married and how long. Told us that he just celebrated his 61st anniversary. Was tempted to ask him what he thought of Kingman’s performance, but refrained. Mentioned that we were Cubs fans and the Hundley camp instead. Said he just saw Randy recently. We quickly left him alone, but he was super friendly to everyone that came up to him. Looks great too.

You are a trooper

Paying to the Cubs on the road in this season. Enjoy the Southern California weather!

Thanks.

Got the tickets really cheap on stubhub. My husband is here on business. He was just nice enough to let me tag along. I can thank the Cubs for that. Had they not been in town, he would have definitely said no.

I'm actually surprised Lasorda was nice to you.

Every time I have seen him in public, he has a look on his face like he’d rather be anywhere else on Earth than among “the little people”.

After meeting him last night I am very surprised to hear that.

If anything he seemed to be encouraging people to say hi. Maybe the delicious food put him in a good mood.

Tommy likes it when women walk to while he's eating pasta

Wow... Mike Quade made a poor decision? Who would've thunk it?

Thank god he only has one more week

Gotta give it to SackMan.

He was the first one driving the “Quade is atrocious” bandwagon, and it looks like he was right.

Yar...GENIOUS!!! :]
And...to prove misery does INDEED enjoy company...I'm enlisting a good friend (VERY SOON) in BCB
