Turner, the Tiger's top pitching prospect, is the biggest name I've been hearing in regards to the Matt Garza deal, which is apparently past the initial trade talk stages. I really can't find much about him other than stats, which are great but can be flawed based on the league the player is in, how old he is and how old most players are in that league, etc. If we do pull the trigger and Turner is the big prize, does anyone know what to expect? How soon could he be in the rotation? What kind of stuff does he throw?
There's a pretty long scouting report I found of him when Garza talks were hot a few weeks ago
He’s 20 and is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. He could easily start the year in the majors, but I believe we’d start him in AAA (which is the right move.) He was called up too early last year. He could be a cornerstone sitting atop the Cubs rotation for many years.
Ryno G - January 10, 2012
I was going to say the same thing.
He is a #1 or #2 type pitcher, at least projected anyhow. He has a big upside but probably needs another year in the minors. He could be a mid-season call-up type if he excels. In the long run, he will probably be a much better pitcher and under longer control than Garza.
mrcubsfan - January 10, 2012
Thus why I really think
he would, and should be headlining any trade Detroit makes for Garza.
If they want Garza, they give up Turner, and I think Theo / Jed will look at it that way too.
And probably ask for a few more pieces as well.
chrisw95 - January 10, 2012
He was rushed into the majors, got destroyed
Sad part is his confidence may reflect that.
unretrofied93 - January 10, 2012
As long as he avoids
Rich Hill syndrome, he should be ok.
And that really could work to the Cubs advantage as far as a trade for him.
I have a gut feeling that Theo / Jed are working towards getting a great haul for Garza, and Detroit may be willing to part with some of their top prospects to do it, Turner included.
My only concern in him coming to the Cubs, as well as any players, is how they will be taught in the minors. Will they get the training they need vs just going through the cycles and keeping bad habits, because they work in the minors.
chrisw95 - January 10, 2012
Turner must be in any Detroit package if they want Garza.
Castellanos is too risky of a headliner to me. I’d love to get Turner and Smyly.
Ryno G - January 10, 2012
Turner is a lot younger than Hill.
He’s a year younger than Starlin Castro.
Al Yellon - January 10, 2012
And will still have a ton to learn
but if the raw skills are there, and the proper training as well, I see him being a huge part of the future.
And to get Smyly as well, would be a great leap forward for our future rotation.
chrisw95 - January 10, 2012
His first out was good vs. LAA
5 and 1/3 and giving up only 2 earned runs on 3 hits. It was his September call-up that he got blown up and that could be due to playing longer than he previously had.
RiskyBusiness - January 10, 2012
He'll be eligible to purchase alcohol in late May.
And here is his MiLB page.
If Garza is traded…. then Turner? Yes, please.
fsuapollo - January 10, 2012
Yikes, he looks older than Jaime Moyer in that picture
unretrofied93 - January 10, 2012
If he is
such a can’t miss, why the heck would the Tigers get rid of him? Even if he does not make the bigs until 2013, you would think they can go a year with out him or Garza.
wild bill - January 10, 2012
They have a legitimate shot at winning it all THIS YEAR.
And last year, their problem was no good pitchers after Verlander.
wrigleyrocker12 - January 10, 2012
and fister
jesus christos - January 10, 2012
That I
was thinking. Seems to be short sided vision. Me I don’t move him. But if he is all he is cracked up to be, go for it if you are the Cubs.
wild bill - January 10, 2012
When a World Series championship is on the line...
…it’s OK to be short-sighted to some extent. The Tigers have a golden opportunity to dominate their division for the next couple of seasons at least. The Sox and Twins are a mess. The Royals are, well, the Royals — lots of young talent but they’ve yet to prove they can do anything with it. And the Indians, who have some young talent themselves, have a ton of ground to make up just to get to 90 wins. Verlander, Fister and Garza would appear to be a pretty dominant 1-3.
daver - January 10, 2012
Agree with daver.
The Tigers definitely don’t want to give up Turner.
But Garza is awfully likely to better than Turner this year. And probably the following year, too.
So, they’re considering dealing a guy who might be Matt Garza for…. Matt Garza.
fsuapollo - January 10, 2012
I find myself hoping...
…that the Garza for Turner deal is already in place and the two sides are now just quibbling over what secondary players should be involved.
daver - January 10, 2012
And remember
even if he makes it in 2013, it may take a few years to work things. He is still only 20.
rlpete - January 10, 2012
I hear he can Turner organization around
…..[gong]…..
wrigley's ivy - January 10, 2012
So if he is traded
to the Yankee’s he would make them worse?
wild bill - January 10, 2012
so that's the compensation for theo!
jesus christos - January 10, 2012
Ha. Huh?
Depends who they hypothetically trade for him. I was making a terrible play on words, but couldn’t resist – hence the GONG.
wrigley's ivy - January 10, 2012
Hey it put a smile on my face.
wild bill - January 11, 2012
If the Cubs can get
Turner and Smyly for Garza, IMO, that would be a great return.
bazfan1234 - January 10, 2012
Only if Sesame Street oldtimers
can call him Guy.
timh815 - January 10, 2012
I think Quade would go into an endless loop if he had Smyly on his team.
daver - January 10, 2012
That would be interesting, but luckily, we do not have to hear that crap anymore...
But getting Smyly on top of Turner would be huge.
bazfan1234 - January 10, 2012
I'm not sure........
Turner wants Smyly on top of him………
jballgame - January 10, 2012
Ha...jokester
I guess it did sound wrong.
bazfan1234 - January 10, 2012
He would just call him Smiles to throw everyone off.
ubercubsfan - January 10, 2012
Sounds like the Cubs want more
From Paul Sullivan today
That may be too much for a player with only 2 seasons of team control left.
RiskyBusiness - January 10, 2012
That's basically the haul...
… that the Padres got for Latos, or the A’s for Gio Gonzalez.
Unless a team gets desperate, looks like Garza stays a Cub.
Al Yellon - January 10, 2012
I for one
would not be sad if Garza remains. They could trade at the deadline or sign him to a couple more years. I would hate to see him go but if it’s a haul of prospects I’d take it.
Uncle Fungus - January 11, 2012
Even in the unlikely event that
blind squirrel Sully has found a nut…
There’s lots of ways “out” of that demand. For one, who is defining “top”? If it means 4 top 100 prospects, there’s no chance. But if “4 top prospects” was Turner, Smyly/Castellonos & 2 more pieces Theo/Jed find interesting (and are therefore “top”)… that could get done.
fsuapollo - January 10, 2012
Exactly.
I’m sure they could be convinced to take 3 pieces if they really like them. 4 is probably a debatable variable.
Ryno G - January 10, 2012
As much as I'm in favor of the rebuild...
…I can’t help being skeptical when I hear about young phenom pitchers (given their tendency to blow out their arms). Getting Castellanos too would go a long way in making me feel good about this deal.
bluekoolaide - January 10, 2012
Castellanos doesnt blow me away. he sounds like Vitters.
MDavis - January 11, 2012
Mlbn says Detroit will go with Turner as their 5th starter next year.
If Turner flops early then the Cubs will demand more for Garza at the All Star break. Bold move.
Mitchener - January 10, 2012
Nah, Turner will start the year in AAA.
Avid Reader - January 11, 2012
As a Tigers fan, are you in favor of trading him for Garza?
daver - January 11, 2012
Dumb question...
…but what would be an equal return for what we gave up to get Garza? And what would be a better return for what we gave up to get Garza?
cubswynn - January 10, 2012
We gave away a top 50 prospect and top 100 prospect, a 4th oF, Back up Catcher, then Fuld
Turner and Nick Castellanos and throw ins would be better than we gave up. Turner is a top 25 prospect and Castellanos is in the top 100.
Mitchener - January 10, 2012
It's weird because if I'm the Tigers I don't flip Turner for Garza...
…however if I’m the Cubs I don’t settle for just Turner for Garza.
Most reports I’ve read (because I can’t tell upside by just watching a guy pitch, though I have seen Turner pitch), say he’s a solid bet to be a #2. I don’t think a lot of people project him to be a pure ace, at least most of the guys I like to read who are scouting “experts”.
IOftenPanic - January 10, 2012
I know that Turner
never killed a hooker in Reno. So there’s that in his favor too.
Josh Timmers - January 10, 2012
There aren't many like him anymore.
Truly a stand up guy!
