I think it had something to do with Cecil Fielder's gambling problems, or his divorce from Prince's mom.
Which also (probably) may have had something to do with Cecil’s gambling. Cecil was essentially broke at the time of his divorce, which was just as Prince’s career was starting.
Cecil did say that he spoke with Prince around Christmas this year. So I guess they are on speaking terms at least.
Prince hasn’t shed any light on their relationship, but following the news of the blockbuster deal, plenty of reporters wanted to hear Cecil’s reaction. In the interview with Sirius XM, Cecil said that the two have had a few chats and are doing a lot better than they were.
because I was too impatient to wait for a Mariners one to come in. I don’t like Notre Dame at all so I dont know why. I also was known to wear an Indians hat – cause I liked the logo.
Let's see - Tram played for the Tigers from '77 to '96
And Cecil played with them from ‘90 to ’96. Prince was born in ’84 and looks to be in the 7-9 year range there, so let’s limit this to ’91 to ’93.
In ‘91, the only non-schooltime dates for DET@TOR were Aug. 6-8. ’92: Jun 16-18, ’93: Jul 29-Aug 1. Trammell didn’t play in any of the games in ’91, which leads me to believe he was hurt for that series, so scratch that. Hmm – same in ’92. When the hell did he ever travel to Toronto, then?
Ah, here we go – a game where Tram started at SS in TOR while Prince Fielder was 7 to 9 years old: Thursday, July 29, 1993. I won’t hang my hat on it, since I’ve really got no other evidence, but I’ll put it in ’93, sometime between 7/29 and 8/1, with a preference for 7/29 since Tram is holding his glove like he intends to use it.
I think I’ve got the big date range right, but why would Prince be wearing a NYG shirt if they hadn’t won the Super Bowl the year before? Say, 16-3 over the Bills on 1/27/91? Tram was out of the lineup on 8/6-8, but he played all four games @TOR 4/25-28. 4/25/91 was a Thursday, meaning that Cecil could have flown the fam up for the weekend games on 4/27 and 4/28.
I’m gonna change that to 4/27/91 – if anyone wants better info, wrangle a interview with Prince…
Just yesterday the internet figured out the precise “good day” from Ice Cube’s “It was a good day”.
It was January 20, 1992, btw. The only possible day in which the Lakers beat the Sonics, it was clear and smog-free, the Goodyear blimp was in LA, Yo! MTV Raps aired, and beepers were commercially available.
I give credit for Al for last year’s “what game(s) was(were) in Ferris Bueller” article. Trendsetter!
I'm really thinking 1991 - that photo *screams* 1991.
Also, Zubaz height of popularity was 1991, with $100MM in sales. They were a joke by 1993 – according to wiki, voted 3rd in the “worst thing in sports” by Inside Sports in that year.
The Giants T-shirt, the Zubaz, and that particular grayish Tigers road kit, with the polyester sash… it’s 1991.
I don't know if anyone else mentioned this already or if it is true,
but I heard on the radio that Prince hit one out of the stadium in Detroit when he was 12 and Mike Ilitch saw it and wanted him on his team ever since!
… in 2002, when Prince was taken seventh overall by the Brewers, the Tigers had the next pick. If that story is true, Detroit almost certainly would have taken him.
They took Scott Moore instead. Yes, THAT Scott Moore.
Picks in the first round after that included Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels and Matt Cain.
The Cubs took Bobby Brownlie. They could have had Matt Cain.
This explains alot
lshaffer_69 - January 24, 2012
Hilarious!
That is pretty cool to see though
CubFanInChina - January 24, 2012
He weighs less NOW
Hammer - January 24, 2012
Awesome!
How about that, 69 cent cheeseburgers.
Dcr18 - January 24, 2012
But the double now costs $.19 less
Strange world we live in
Clutch16 - January 24, 2012
Well, sometimes. It depends on the place, and I've never understood how the McDouble sometimes costs the same as the hamburger.
Free meat?
cubbybear - January 25, 2012
horse meat
bren - January 27, 2012
Is he still feuding with his dad.
i watch OSTL or 60 minutes on how he hated his dad
lshaffer_69 - January 24, 2012
Hated might be too strong a word
But last I heard, he wasn’t on anything other than formal terms with him. He just says “He’s not a part of my life.”
Josh Timmers - January 24, 2012
Wait what why?
They seemed so adorable in the commercial?!
Aw, now I’m disappoint.

Yeah...
…what’s all the “beef” about?
(anyone? anyone?)
cubswynn - January 24, 2012 via mobile
His dad decided not to take him to McDonalds after they were done playing ball
Things went downhill fast from there :(
Juiceboxjerry - January 25, 2012
I guess it's gotten better in the last few years...

Here's the pic that's been making the rounds on Twitter:
Check out Prince’s Cubs Zubaz!
daver - January 25, 2012
FWIW, that's Alan Trammell giving Prince the once-over.
Al Yellon - January 25, 2012
Thought so.
daver - January 25, 2012
Nice two-seamer he's working on, tho.
Clutch16 - January 25, 2012
can anyone name the shoes?
TC Cubby - January 26, 2012
Air Jordan VIs
cubswynn - January 26, 2012
Cubs pants, NY Giants shirt, DET Tigers hat
oooooook
Hammer - January 25, 2012
C'mon, he's a kid!
I used to be a Supersonics and Duke fan. People make mistakes.
cubswynn - January 25, 2012
Ha - wow Supersonics
Nice.
Hammer - January 25, 2012
I loved Shawn Kemp.
I had a Starter jacket and everything.
cubswynn - January 25, 2012
true allegiance is determined by Starter jackets.

I had a Notre Dame starter jacket
because I was too impatient to wait for a Mariners one to come in. I don’t like Notre Dame at all so I dont know why. I also was known to wear an Indians hat – cause I liked the logo.
Hammer - January 25, 2012
So why rip on adolescent Prince?!
cubswynn - January 25, 2012
I wasn't
just thought it was funny that he was wearing them all at once
Hammer - January 25, 2012
I know...the ?! was suppose to indicate that.
Little kids (like me) should get ripped on for their choices of team gear.
cubswynn - January 25, 2012
Trying not to alienate future locations to play.
See, it worked.
Arbusto - January 26, 2012
Damn, Boras is good.
daver - January 26, 2012
That is one of the most 1991 photos ever taken.
If they could have somehow gotten him into a Charlotte Hornets starter jacket the photo would have collapsed under the weight of its own 1991-osity.
D98 - January 29, 2012
Yep.
Zubaz scream 1990s — and not in a good way.
daver - January 30, 2012
ok on what day was this taken
and where?
Cubbie-Tim - January 25, 2012
Road grays, baby blue seats, and awful Astroturf
I’ll say the where is Toronto.
Clutch16 - January 25, 2012
Also, Prince's shoe is untied
Clutch16 - January 25, 2012
but what date?
Cubbie-Tim - January 25, 2012

i'm going to give you a rec since you took the time to figure that out
jesus christos - January 25, 2012
Hmm...I may have to rethink that a bit
I think I’ve got the big date range right, but why would Prince be wearing a NYG shirt if they hadn’t won the Super Bowl the year before? Say, 16-3 over the Bills on 1/27/91? yes Prince, i wanted to open with a question about a picture we were exploring on BCB…what date was this?
Cubbie-Tim - January 25, 2012
this is what the internet does now.
Just yesterday the internet figured out the precise “good day” from Ice Cube’s “It was a good day”.

It's gotta be 1991.
Because it’s the only year out of the three where the Tigers wore that style of uniform.
Al Yellon - January 26, 2012
Also - Prince is wearing Air Jordan IV special editions, which were 1991.
Man, the internet figures these things out quick.
D98 - January 29, 2012
Given that it's 1991
… Prince Fielder was seven years old.
That is the biggest seven-year-old I have ever seen.
Al Yellon - January 29, 2012
Well done.
daver - January 26, 2012
I'm really thinking 1991 - that photo *screams* 1991.

lshaffer_69 - January 26, 2012

It kinda looks like Webster
lshaffer_69 - January 26, 2012
The important thing to take away from this is....
“Even mlb players have terrible teeth” Cecil needed some serious work done in that vid.
RynoRooter - January 25, 2012

TC Cubby - January 26, 2012
McDonald's is disgusting...
It is baffling to me why people flock to that place.

Everyone is loving it…even if something like the McRib is partially made out of Yoga Mats

Can you imagine having to figure out what to pay him this year?!
/s
bdlugz - January 30, 2012
Nah.
Jim Hendry would have already signed him to a backloaded deal through 2014.
Al Yellon - January 30, 2012
On the one hand, that sounds like an urban myth.
On the other, I watched the Prince Fielder press conference and Mike Ilitch seems like a rather odd, eccentric fellow. So maybe it is true.
daver - January 30, 2012
Mike Ilitch eccentric?
Whatever gave you that idea?
Al Yellon - January 30, 2012
I'm guessing if I was from the Detroit area...
…I’d know all about this guy. But I’d never really heard of him before this. He was, um, quite a trip.
daver - January 30, 2012
yet another argument against plastic surgery.
