We sure have a lot of redundant relievers – big, questionable dominican guys in Cabrera, Mateo and Dolis. That could be traded or outrighted to make room… I was bummed to see Bianchi waived – he has some potential, post surgery. Now we’re just loading up on infield schwag.
…that may help quell some of the grumblings here. Scales has been re-signed to: 1) Add some middle-infield depth to Triple A (where it’s lacking), and 2) Possibly start his career track as a Cubs coach.
People can say what they want about Bobby Scales the player, but he’s a very smart, well-spoken and motivated guy who could turn out to be a great asset as a coach.
Like I said below. Really, people are up in arms about a utility infielder on the AAA club. I suppose that is just a sign that spring training needs to start, SOON.
There is no doubt he was grossly misused by Lou. That said, he is a solid baseball citizen destined for AAA. The Cubs are going to have quite a few key players in Iowa this season (Vitters, Jackson, Rizzo, etc.), there are advantages to having a guy like this in Iowa to help demonstrate “The Cubs Way” that Theo and Jed have talked about.
I know much of the angst is in jest, but, really… there is angst over the signing of a guy who will likely be a reserve on the AAA team. Really?
Bobby Scales exemplifies "The Cubs Way"? Really? It's worse than I thought then...
…you’re right about not getting all riled up over any certain signings we don’t agree with. There’s no use, cuz, they’re gonna be signed anyway. I’ve decided on just rolling of the eyes, face palms, snickers and a couple WTFs is sufficient enough.
Hey Al…we need emoticons on here. I know…right after the de-rec button.
Look, Bobby Scales should certainly not be on the ML club at any point taking any at bat from any prospect. But that isn’t what this signing is about in the least. This is about having a veteran presence as a reserve on a minor league team.
Yes, a player like Scales can demonstrate the right way to play the game. Work hard. Be apart of the team not me-first show-boat. Show up early. Take extra batting practice. So on and so on.
Like I said before, you are getting worked up about who is the reserve infielder on the AAA team. Really? If you can’t begin to fathom that there might be value in having such a player serve as sort of a player-coach/mentor at the minor league level, then, well…
…Scales has a solid minor league career OBP of . 377 (5,166 PAs!!!) and even a decent .342 MLB career OBP, so he appears to understand the value of working the count — which is part of “The Cubs Way” currently under construction.
What’s with all the angst? Scales is a good character guy, a very hard worker, a phenomenal teammate, and a smart ballplayer. Why wouldn’t you want a guy like that on your minor league team? He can model and teach those traits and habits to the stream of young players who come through Iowa, and that’s good.
He’s a good organizational filler choice. He’s not going to be blocking anybody. He’s not going to take ABs and playing time from anybody. He’s just there to hold the Flavor of the Month’s [hand] in the Pacific Coast League.
Ok, I give.
Is that Scales?

Assuming the picture is accurate...

ubercubsfan - January 27, 2012
and to further this.
INF Bobby Scales, who started 2011 w/ the Cubs then went to Japan, has resigned with the Cubs.
ubercubsfan - January 27, 2012
Imagine if the dude who started this fanshot had just said that!
Nunyabidness - January 27, 2012
Definitely would have better to say that and have the picture in the body.
I almost thought it was MB for a moment. Had to zoom in on the picture to rule that out. lol
ubercubsfan - January 27, 2012
The title shoulda read...
“Why the Hell did they bring Scales back?” It’s happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Easy Ed - January 27, 2012
He is THE piece needed to make a run!!!
ubercubsfan - January 27, 2012
If resigned means "officially quit,
I’m ecstatic.

Who’s next? Matt Stairs?
KO Stradivarius - January 27, 2012
Probably...
…since Theriot already signed somewhere.
Easy Ed - January 27, 2012
Well, he can play LF right Jessica?
/sarcasm
Cubbie-Tim - January 27, 2012
Next is another rant about Scales, like he did with RoLo.
ubercubsfan - January 27, 2012
No
Scales isn’t worth a rant.
What I do hope is that the Cubs hire him as a minor league coach. He’d probably be a good one. But he needs to retire as a player.
Al Yellon - January 27, 2012
Maybe mention what Bruce Miles told you on Twitter...?
daver - January 27, 2012
Bruce says that's the likely scenario here
… as Oneri Fleita thinks Scales could do well. Let’s hope so.
Al Yellon - January 27, 2012
I just think that's a key point...

Koyie Hill for hitting coach!!
Hammer - January 27, 2012
He couldn't be worse.
Sometimes, not-great hitters become good hitting coaches.
Walt Hriniak and Charlie Lau, two of the greatest hitting coaches, were not great hitters. And both catchers, incidentally.
Al Yellon - January 27, 2012
When half your playing career
is spent squatted behind hitters, you tend to notice a few things. Spoken by a former catcher…
Sioux City Cubs Fan - January 27, 2012
When they interviewed him on MLB Network
about Yu Darvish, he seemed like a natural on TV. He might have a career there.

I'm glad to see him come back

The rate things keep going, the AAA team will be older than the big club. lol
