This photo is courtesy of BCB reader tensionhead, who emailed it to me this morning. You still can't see anything much under all the plastic sheeting, but this gives you a view of it taken from one of the rooftops across from the right field bleachers.
It's also definitive proof that the Cubs are not building anything beyond the existing bleacher structure or raising the back walkway.
You can also see what appears to be some of the construction workers, either on a break, or more likely eating lunch, given that the scoreboard clock reads 12:10 (this photo was taken Friday, February 17).
Finally, this gives a better view of ... whatever that is covering the entire field. Looks like a tarp of some kind. Not exactly sure why the Cubs are doing that; I have never seen the field completely covered during the offseason before.

They're working on something in the LF bleachers too?
SackMan - February 18, 2012
Probably just general annual maintenance.
Al Yellon - February 18, 2012
LF Bleachers
Maybe the Cubs are retiring Al’s seat in LF.
toppsmike - February 18, 2012
Heh.
Except mine is in the corner, uncovered.
Al Yellon - February 18, 2012
Maybe there's a surprise under that tarp.
Tat14 - February 18, 2012
They should paint advertisements on the OF grass.
SackMan - February 18, 2012
They have probably poured concrete under all that plastic...

Was the Budweiser building/Horshoe building
become the United building? I haven’t noticed that before.
tomas21 - February 18, 2012
That was last year.
Al Yellon - February 18, 2012
I guess I didn't watch much
I feel like I’ve never seen that.
tomas21 - February 18, 2012
It was definitely there all last year.

Green Tarp
It’s a plastic to green up the grass. That’s why the grass looks like the middle of summer on opening day. You’ll see that at golf courses on the greens some times. It fools the grass because of the warmth under the tarp. It can also burn the grass if it’s left on when it warms up. Remember the old days when they used to paint the grass. esspecially the days when the Bears played there.

Thanks for the explanation.
I did not know they used that. I had not seen it used in previous offseasons.
Al Yellon - February 18, 2012
Might be because we've had more snow in previous offseasons.
maybe a nice thick layer of snow insulates the grass enough that they don’t have to go the tarp route. But this year, the grass has been exposed almost the whole winter. Granted, it hasn’t been as cold as previous years, but still – exposed is exposed, especially at night.

Maybe it's just a giant slip and slide - Gracie!

doofus cubs guy - February 18, 2012
Actually
… I think you’re probably right about the snow cover.
Al Yellon - February 19, 2012
Sounds like Agribond.
We use it to cover plants at night during the cold season. Let’s us grow veggies year round in the Nevada climate.
I should’ve guessed it was something like this. But I’m still pulling for my “surprise under the tarp” idea.

S.O.B.
I just moved out of the area and that picture is making me miss the city… gah, stupid suburbs
T.P. Grant - February 18, 2012
Cool picture! thank for posting it!
… The scoreboard looks pretty faded..I wonder when the last paint job was done
chit0wn - February 18, 2012
IIRC
… the scoreboard was last painted in 2006. Not too long ago, but in another couple years it might need to be painted again.
Al Yellon - February 19, 2012
Just makes me sad that I may not be able to make it to Wrigley this year
But still looking a lot more forward to this season than last.
Am going to see Peoria play in person for the first time in April, so looking forward to seeing what our single A roster looks like this year too.
