Pitchers and catchers report for the Cubs in just 12 days. The Cubs' first spring training game is on March 4, just 27 days away.
As teams begin to prepare for the season, so too do players of fantasy baseball. I've been playing in fantasy leagues since the mid 1980s. Truth be told, I haven't had as much time in recent years as I would have liked to pay attention to my fantasy teams. Those of you who have been in leagues with me know this, as my teams have pretty much sunk to last place and stayed there.
For those of you who do play, there's a choice of online providers. This is far different from when I started doing this and at first, we did all the stats by hand -- that meant once a week, at most, because otherwise it was way too much work. Later there were software packages, but those also had limitations.
SB Nation's partner Yahoo is one of the better providers of an interface to play fantasy baseball. After the jump, their pitch for having you sign up for a league on their site.

- Yahoo! Sports is the leading fantasy provider and home to the #1 Fantasy Baseball game available – all for free! It brings fans closer to the game and players they love with free live scoring, mock drafts, mobile apps, over 80 scoring categories, live and offline draft apps, and tools to manage your keeper league.
- Yahoo! Sports now offers the fantasy fanatic an even more competitive way to play, Pro Leagues are here! Join a Pro League for $20 or $100 and compete to win cash prizes. For those who dare to put some skin in the game.
- Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball '12 is easy and fun to play for the rookie or veteran fantasy user.
- Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball provides fans with top-notch information, resources, and expert advice.
- Yahoo! Sports provides pre-draft advice clips to help you draft the best team possible. Fantasy advice is also available throughout the season with bi-weekly video clips and weekly radio coverage on the Fantasy Freaks (every Friday 8pm-10pm ET).
- Fantasy baseball is the original social network, it is the way friends stayed connected over America’s pastime no matter where they were, Yahoo! Sports continues the tradition by letting fans talk smack talk, check'in, and chat on newly launched message boards.
Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball supports SBNation for its commitment to furthering America’s hardball obsession. As the #1 Fantasy Baseball game, players can count on Yahoo! to provide all the research, stats, live scoring, video highlights, and mobile apps to make this season the best yet. Game opens 2/9/12 – Sign up!!!

Been using Yahoo! since 2006 for Fantasy Baseball
as well as ESPN and CBS. Yahoo! is by far the best, except for keeper/dynasty leagues, though I’m told they may have improved on this for 2012.
branwtease - February 6, 2012
Yeah I've always liked Yahoo too.
Once they went to free live scoring that was the clincher.

My friends and I do a dynasty league through Fangraphs fantasy site Ottoneu.
It just started last year, and definitely had some rough patches, but by the end it was a pretty awesome platform. They do 40 man rosters (with 12 teams, that’s quite a lot of depth) including full access to the minor leagues.
We do a $400 auction league, and it’s been really interesting so far.

Yahoo started dynasty leagues last
year. I’m in a dynasty league and I really like it. I can’t wait until it opens tomorrow.
Cubsfan Waveland - February 8, 2012
Would love to join a league with fellow BCB'ers if you have room, or want to create a new one. Thanks! Kevin

check my post below...
Fukudometer - February 6, 2012
Just an FYI
That link you provide to sign up isn’t working.
RynoHoF - February 6, 2012
It worked here...took me to Yahoo Fatasy Baseball homepage...
…it’s not open for sin-ups yet. Tomorrow, I think it said.

Easy Ed - February 6, 2012
Damn - I was most curious as to what a "sin-up" was...
ballhawk - February 6, 2012
I've been upping my sin since 1989
Emelie - February 6, 2012
hmm... talk about a 'growth' industry. ;-)
ballhawk - February 6, 2012
Never mind...
turns out I’m an idiot and forgot that my work firewall doesn’t allow known fantasy websites. Now, the unknown ones… :)
RynoHoF - February 6, 2012
I used to love fantasy sports, until it got blocked at my work.
Nunyabidness - February 6, 2012
ha - just posted the same thing
Hammer - February 6, 2012
I've run a FBB site for BCBers for the last 3 years.
I’ll be inviting the old managers back this year, but I’m sure we’ll have some open spots.
Free league, most managers are somewhat active.
Fukudometer - February 6, 2012
(I'll post it on the fanshots when I create the league)
Fukudometer - February 6, 2012
If you have room, I'd like to join in this year. Thanks
scottsdalecubs - February 6, 2012
I was a past manager, if there's an opening I would rejoin.
Didn’t play last year due to starting a dynasty league. Oh… and having a kid. One of those took up a lot of my time, can’t remember which.
bdlugz - February 6, 2012
I've been in your league twice
Admittedly I didn’t do well my first few seasons because of relative inexperience, but I’m ready to go back! Hope we have another awesome season.
Azul Cachorro - February 6, 2012
I'd like to join this year
I played the in the football league with you this year, but didn’t play in the baseball one last year. Would like to this time around.
Also, I suppose Yahoo delayed opening it for who knows why, but it says it should open today, now.
alkappy - February 9, 2012
There is a SBNation site for fantasy sports called "Fake Teams"
For a few years it was a desolate wasteland. It seems like it’s picking up some steam….
Fukudometer - February 6, 2012
odd time to run this
since their games aren’t live for 2012 yet
DartmouthCubsFan - February 6, 2012
The signup date for this deal starts tomorrow.
That’s why it runs today.
Al Yellon - February 6, 2012
why not run it today?
would seem to make more sense than to promote something that isn’t available yet
DartmouthCubsFan - February 7, 2012
We were asked to run it on Monday.
Al Yellon - February 7, 2012
I'm all for capitalism...
but I miss the days when BCB was just pure content from a passionate Cubs fan, not someone looking to fatten his pocketbook.
kanderber - February 6, 2012
It still is...
Al doesn’t do this for free nor does the site host itself. They need some sort of sponsorship to pay the bills.
mikeschieve - February 6, 2012
Thank goodness for head an shoulders.
bdlugz - February 6, 2012
This is a very odd personal mission you seem to have undertaken.
daver - February 7, 2012
Yes. These posts four times a year
Really have me bent out of shape as well. After all, why should a site that doesn’t charge you for membership be allowed other ways to earn income?
Nunyabidness - February 17, 2012
my fantasy team >>>>>> yours
jesus christos - February 6, 2012
yeah, but everybody knows you can't hit a curve ball...
ballhawk - February 6, 2012
Dewitt
On another great note… Dewitt just got DFAed
wyldjimme - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Once the hospital I worked at
blocked Yahoo sports I didn’t bother playing. In order to be a good fantasy baseball player you need constant access to your team.
Then they blocked BCB – that pissed me off. Game threads got my through the day
Hammer - February 6, 2012
I use yahoo and have for years
And I’m bothered by this post. I understand how corporate America works. Still.
Musicdude10 - February 6, 2012
I've been using Yahoo since '07
It’s the simplest setup in my mind compared to the likes of ESPN, who decide to change every aspect of their system every damn year…
bmasson11 - February 6, 2012
The junky reason to have a Yahoo account: Fantasy sports
dtpollitt - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Err, 'only'
dtpollitt - February 6, 2012 via mobile
the only thing I do with my yahoo acct
is go delete spam. Cause Im weird like that
Hammer - February 6, 2012
Yahoo does a good job
I think their app is definitely in need of tweaking, but I’ve been playing fantasy sports games through their site since 2000 and they do good work.
mjk83 - February 7, 2012
One of my favorite times of the year, every year, is when Yahoo Fantasy Baseball starts up
Been using them for my baseball, basketball and football leagues for over a decade now. By far the best in the business.
I’m a drafting degenerate, and I’ll struggle to limit myself to only 4 teams. One year I utterly broke down, showing no restraint while shamelessly drafting 16. I have no regrets.
