The Cubs announced their regular season television schedule today. As always, all 162 games will be on TV -- if you're younger than about 35, you won't remember the days when about 20 games a year weren't on TV anywhere. Now, you can get every game pretty much anywhere, unless you're in one of the Bud Selig Blackout Areas.
This year, unlike a few recent years in the past, Opening Day will be on WGN. That's good news. The usual eight games are on WCIU; some of those will wind up on ESPN as national telecasts, so you won't miss them if you're outside the Chicago area.
The breakdown of TV games is as follows:
WGN: 63
CSN: 80
WCIU: 8
Fox: 9
ESPN: 2
There are three TBD games; two possible ESPN dates that will be on WGN if not on ESPN, and one possible late-season Fox date that will be on WGN if not on Fox. For simplicity's sake I have listed the ESPN TBD's as ESPN above, and the Fox TBD as WGN above (since those seem the most likely outcomes of those TBD's). After the jump, the complete schedule.

I didn't buy MLB.TV last year after having it for the last 3 years...
I didn’t really miss it, the Cubs were awful. We’ll be better than awful this year but I’m still not sure I will get it this year.
santoswoodenlegs - February 8, 2012
How was it?
I’ve pondered it in years past, but didn’t want to drop that much coin on a product i haven’t demo’d.
unretrofied93 - February 8, 2012
It started out pretty crappy...
and got a bit better each year. I would assume it’s fairly robust now if you have decent bandwidth.
santoswoodenlegs - February 8, 2012
@ bat app kick ass
Surprising inexperience. For most games you can listen to the 5th inning of the other teams and it’ll spare you listen to Judd.
Madison Cub Fan - February 8, 2012
I agree.
Listening to the Cubs or any other team’s radio broadcast is nice. Works well when the Cubs have a day off and you can still listen to a game.
mikeschieve - February 8, 2012
3 innings of Scully :)
I’ve never listened to him until we got the @ bat app two years ago. We also toggled between the BoSox-Baltimore & Yanks/Rays last day of season.
Madison Cub Fan - February 8, 2012
I've had the iPhone audio app the last two years,
after two years of the MLB.TV. Don’t need the latter.
dtpollitt - February 8, 2012
Ive actually bought this the past two years but not necessarily for the cubs. I live in the Chicago are so most of the time I can just hookup my antenna. I dont have cable though so I would use MLBTV, do some magic, and was then able to watch the CSN broadcasts. Anyways, straightup broadcasts (not hopping through a VPN) are stunning. They stream at roughly 4.5Mb/s max. Thats about twice what MHL/NBA streams. They have different bandwidth tiers if you dont have that much to play with.
Its funny actually. NBA/NHL both outsources theirs to a third party company, MLB created a company to handle it and they have a cheaper product with more devices and better quality. MLBAM also streams the watchESPN broadcasts as well as the NCAA March Madness. They also do that new Glenn Beck network but thats beside the point. Its pretty cool how MLB was able to successfully create this company and was willing to branch out.
I have a better schedule that last year, I get 3 to 4 days off a week. Definitely buying this again so I can watch pretty much anytime I want when I am off!
stevo81989 - February 9, 2012
9 Saturday games on Fox? Ugh. That's at least 6 or 7 Saturdays they won't be on TV at all for me.
As an East Coast resident, there is literally nothing worse than seeing a premium Cubs matchup (like Cubs/Cards) slated for the Fox saturday broadcast. The absolute best case scenario is that I have to listen to Joe Buck call the game – a form of torture, but one that can be managed or dealt with. More often, however, Fox just sits on the rights, makes some matchup involving NY or Boston the “feature” game, and doesn’t let anyone outside Chicago and the opposing team’s market watch the Cubs game that they locked in for the same time. Saturday after saturday, if the Cubs have a home game “on Fox” it means (for me and others outside Chicago) that the game isn’t really televised at all.
I’d be all in favor of national broadcast games if they were actually broadcast nationally, like ESPN does. But the way Fox gets to hold the rights to multiple games, forcing everyone outside the local market to watch the “feature” game or none at all, is just terrible. Needs to be fixed. At the very least, let me watch it on my computer if I pay for the service. Because I promise, I’m not going to watch Yankees-Red Sox just because you’re blacking out the Cubs game; I’m just going to watch none of hte above.
Orval Overall - February 8, 2012
Completely agree on the Fox stuff.
Utter nonsense and more evidence that Bud and his pals don’t understand that they should be giving access to as many eyeballs as possible instead of limiting who can see games.
fsuapollo - February 8, 2012
Thirded.
There is no reason they shouldn’t be able to offer these online, with the local commercials from the Fox affiliate in your area inserted. That’s the whole reason for the regionalization — presumably those people in the area the game is being shown want to see it.
That’s a 1970s way of thinking. In this era where so many people do not live in the city where their favorite team plays, the choice for a Fox Saturday game, if it doesn’t involve the team people want, isn’t to watch the game that’s on, it’s simply to turn the TV off altogether.
Someday, someone in MLB will wake up and figure this out.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
It really is truly shocking that baseball doesn't understand this.
I mean, Bud is bad… but how do other owners not make waves about this??
How do they not look at some of their other sport owning brethren and NOT see how they try and push their content onto every conceivable platform?
How fast would Mark Cuban and friends piss themselves laughing if Stern came to them and said: “look… I think the best thing to do with our ABC/ESPN contract is to ditch these Sunday double/triple headers and put two or three games on all at the same time. Then we’ll just pick the game with the Heat, Lakers, or Celtics to send to the whole country and the other games will just be on regionally. I think it is a winner!!!”
fsuapollo - February 8, 2012
It's the small market owners, from what I understand
… trying to “protect” their “territory” — territories they don’t even broadcast into any more.
They don’t seem to understand that these blackouts cost them money, too.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
But it still doesn't make sense to me.
How do they not look at OKC, Portland, Utah, Sacremento, Memphis, New Orleans, or even Charlotte (NBA), Jacksonville, Green Bay, Buffalo, or Kansas City (NFL), and anywhere in the NHL that isn’t in Canada or an original six team……. and think that protecting their geographical turf makes more sense than expanding their base?!?!?!
I mean… these are (primarily) successful baseball people who are exhibiting not a shred of business sense.
fsuapollo - February 8, 2012
You're making too much sense.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
Dammit. Not again.
fsuapollo - February 8, 2012
I hear Portlandia is trying to get a baseball team...
RiskyBusiness - February 8, 2012
With what stadium?
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
That's the HUGE Problem
We can argue all day about Portland, San Antonio, Charlotte, northern New Jersey, etc. and their respective abilities to support an MLB team. However, if there are no plans to build a MLB ready stadium, then discussing the issue is pointless. You might as well be talking about putting a MLB team in Starkville, Mississippi.
memphiscub - February 8, 2012
Portlandia is a show on IFC
Here’s the episode
RiskyBusiness - February 8, 2012
Oh.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012

Portlandia Stadium is in the suburbs of Freedonia.

No More Than Two Teams Should Claim An Area
I don’t care what two teams you pick for Las Vegas or Des Moines. At any rate, only two MLB teams should be able to claim those areas. In Des Moines, maybe it’s the Cubs and Royals. In Las Vegas, maybe it’s the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. I don’t know, but there’s no way that six MLB teams should claim a given area. In many places, there are two regional sports networks. Let the two teams that claim a given area be on those regional sports networks, and let the other teams be on Extra Innings blackout free.
memphiscub - February 8, 2012
You're making too much sense.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
...
Emelie - February 8, 2012
Hopefully in about two to four years this simply says
fsuapollo - February 8, 2012
Think Directv will carry that here in AZ?
ubercubsfan - February 8, 2012
Maybe.
But you’ll be able to get the games on MLB.TV or EI.
In any case, it won’t be 162 games, it’ll be more like 150, the rest will be national/regional games.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
Is MLB.TV worth it?
So for all the cubs games am I able to watch with Len & Bob commentating?
unretrofied93 - February 8, 2012
Where are you located?
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
For this season, Houston.
unretrofied93 - February 8, 2012
I would say most of the time, yes.
Except when they are playing the Astros… I think those get blacked out locally, since presumably you can see them on local TV.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
MLB.tv is definitely worth it...
And blackout restrictions can be gotten around with a decent VPN. I used to spend 3 or 4 days a week in Milwaukee for work and the Cubs were blacked out on MLB.tv there. The cost of MLB.tv and an annual VPN sub runs me about $200. About what it costs me to go down to 1 game at Wrigley (when you factor in tickets, gas, hotel, beer, food, etc.), Well worth it in my opinion.
wisconsinwillie - February 9, 2012
In the event of blackouts I was just planning on running through a proxy
Bud Selig would be delighted to see a subscriber in Australia…..
unretrofied93 - February 9, 2012
And to answer your question about whether on MLB.tv
you’ll be able to get the feed with Len & Bob- the answer is if you get the MLB.tv premium subscription ($125), then yes, you get the option to watch either the home or away broadcast where applicable (not applicable to games that are on Fox or ESPN though since there isn’t usually a home and away TV broadcast for those games). With the basic sub ($110) you only get the home broadcast..
wisconsinwillie - February 10, 2012
And I just got my email from MLB regarding MLB.TV for 2012
shortly after posting this. The premium sub this year includes the iPhone or Android app (was $15 extra last year). And I splurged for an extra $20 and got MiLB.TV for 2012 too. Didn’t even know MiLB.TV existed, but it’s their minor league version- claims to show most AAA games as well as some others. So if the season really goes to hell and I get sick of watching Castro and Soriano making errors, I can switch to watching minor league games where nothing that happens will raise my blood pressure.
wisconsinwillie - February 10, 2012
MLB.TV is fine when I borrow a friends account.
I seem to get blacked out here when the Cubs play any California team and sometimes Houston.
ubercubsfan - February 8, 2012
Where are you located?
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
Arizona.
In a small town called Kearny. Conveniently in the middle of nowhere.
ubercubsfan - February 8, 2012
Well that's a prime TV blackout area for at least 19 MLB teams...
santoswoodenlegs - February 8, 2012
Forgot to mention blacked out when playing AZ obviously.
ubercubsfan - February 8, 2012
Weird that you'd get blacked out of Astros games.
That’s Bud-TV for you.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
It's sometimes hit or miss really.
I know I’ve been blacked out from Houston a few times and was pretty confused on why.
ubercubsfan - February 8, 2012
I have a real good friend who grew up there.
AzCubfan24 - February 9, 2012
Unless they change it this year...
…you can “share” accounts with multiple people. So if you have a couple buddies that are willing to split the cost, MLB.tv is a pretty good deal.
cubswynn - February 9, 2012
I thought of that...
but am hoping against hope that as broadcast technology continues to develop, baseball will develop with it.
And yes, I know how ridiculous that hope is.

Possible Cubs TV Network Names:
CESN: Cubs Entertainment and Sports Network
CCSN: Chicago Cubs Sports Network
CCBS: Chicago Cubs Baseball Station
CCBN: Chicago Cubs Baseball Network
CUBS: Cubs Universal Baseball Station or Cubs Universal Broadcasting Station
#1 iowan cubs fan - February 8, 2012
how about just CBS?
Cubs Broadcasting Station. They can use channel 2 in Chicago.
Fukudometer - February 9, 2012
CBS? Ehh, then if you say "CBS", the average joe will think you're talking about the major US commercial broadcasting television network, instead of a Cubs television network.
I would prefer a Cubs TV network called: CUBS: Cubs Universal Baseball (or Broadcasting) Station. Yeah, “universal” is the best word I could think of for the letter “U”. The next best word I could think of was “univision”, which would indicate a Cubs Latino television network. For the record, I have nothing against the Latin culture, for I shall end this comment with “Eamus Catuli.”
#1 iowan cubs fan - February 9, 2012
guessing by your name you're not from Chicago
Channel 2 is CBS (Columbia Broadcasting Station) here in Chicago. I was making a joke that the Cubs could take over that station.

It’s still there.
Al Yellon - February 8, 2012
that's cool. I had a feeling it was a stat you'd keep track of.
With all the ads, etc. I tend to ignore the side bars (except for the countdown clocks). I should check them out more often.
katie casey - February 8, 2012
Still 63 Games on WGN
I’m glad that the Cubs still have the most games available on national cable of any MLB team. That’s good for Cubs fans, who can’t afford Extra Innings or who are disgusted with MLB blackouts with Extra Innings and don’t get EI because of those blackout restrictions.
memphiscub - February 8, 2012
Live Baseball vs. Dawson's Creek reruns?
I am trully torn with indecision.
RiskyBusiness - February 8, 2012
I didnt realize CSN had more than WGN
yet another reason to cancel Time Warner

A lot of Cincy, Mil, STL, and Philly. We might be out of it even earlier than I expected.

Please no
Mapmaker - February 8, 2012

Some of the earliest week night home games I have ever seen. Brewers in the first week ofd the season and the the cards 2 weeks later. They should sell just for the opponents.

Hope for a warmer spring than last year.
Or else the park will be mainly empty in 38-degree weather.

but now they have a fancy computer system.
santoswoodenlegs - February 8, 2012
OT- I found this Cubs baseball
card game at a store in town. Thought maybe some of you might be interested if you are bored waiting for baseball to start. It’s mostly luck, but we liked it.

RiskyBusiness - February 9, 2012
We had on Chicago ESPN radio the other night
They were advertising the Cub 9 pack. But by telling us we could see the WS winning STL and also the NL East Phillies. Hopefully some day there can be ads saying things about the Cubs that is positive/

Since we're on the topic of baseball scheduling...
I found out the Cardinals are going to do a World Series ring ceremony during the pregame on Saturday, April 14… against the Cubs.
Okay, WHY must the Cardinals always do their precious ring ceremony against the Cubs? In 2007, the Cardinals waited until their second home-stand which was on the final weekend of April to do the ring ceremony… against the Cubs. So you would think the Cardinals would do the same thing this year when they face the Brewers (the team they beat in the NLCS) on their second home-stand which is also the last weekend of April. Nope, they’re going to do it against the Cubs.
I think if the Cardinals had to wait until August to face the Cubs at home for the first time in 2012, they would wait all the way until August to do their ring ceremony, just so they can do it when the Cubs are there.
After thinking about it, I guess it kind of makes sense to do a ring ceremony when Cubs fans are there because, well, that’s probably when Busch Stadium sees their highest attendance figures, when the Cubs are in town. Kind of like any other ballpark’s attendance figures when the Cubs are the opponent.

Won't you want to have the Cards???
I would as a Cubs fan.
Before you go off at the mouth about attendence figures

Actually, I agree about the first part about wanting to have a Cubs ring ceremony against the Cardinals, however...
About the attendance, I clicked on your link, and it looks like the Cardinals lead the Cubs in terms of “Total” and “Average”. But the Cubs lead the Cardinals in “Percentage” in home, away, and overall games. If I’m not mistaken, “percentage” to me means the percentage of the ballpark’s occupied capacity. So when comparing Cubs games vs. Cardinals games, the percentage of the ballpark’s occupied capacity is more for the Cubs than the Cardinals.
So, from my initial comment, I think I should have re-phrased “higher attendance figures” to “higher percentage of capacity occupied”.
However, thank you for sharing your link.

My point was they did draw more people
Not percentage wise but actual butts in the seats. So unlike Pirates or Houston it’s not that much of a bump for a team that already was drawing close to 3 million.
Your welcome I hadn’t realize just how many people went to Cards games last year. Considering half way thought the summer it didn’t look like play offs that they got that many people surprised me

Don't tell that to MLB
The Cards are ridiculously one of the 13 teams that will be in the Competitive Balance Lottery for extra 2013 draft picks. Obviously the published numbers are wrong and the Cards revenue and market size is absolutely terrible. I’m sure the Cards about to file for bankruptcy.
All Hail Bud and his wisdom to ensure a World Series Champion team is part of a Competitive Balance Lottery! All Hail Bud !!

If the Cubs were having a ring ceremony,
I wouldn’t give a darn who they were playing that day. I’d be so excited, that would be an afterthought.

One thing on Cubs/Cards attendance
the Cards draw more overall but ticket prices are much less than the Cubs who make much more ticket revenue than the Cards do.
Although, it’s $8.00 for a beer at Busch and last year was “only” $7.25 at Wrigley.
I’m sure the Cards made a fortune with the nine extra post season home games.
On average, the Cubs games are the best attended games at Busch.
MikeJW - February 9, 2012
Which is why
It would make “attendance sense” to do their ring ceremony when they play another team that does not draw as well as the Cubs at Busch.
RiskyBusiness - February 9, 2012
I think it makes sense from the Cards perspective
I imagine that the Cardinals probably do fine in terms of attendance, given their recent success. Some of the decision is likely based on the fact that the Cubs are a big rivalry. Two reasons why: 1) The fan base is already pumped up for the series, and the ring ceremony complements that. 2) It lets them rub it in a little; we are rivals, after all.
We should take it as a complement. It means they’re thinking about us and scheduling their ceremony around US.
Can’t wait till we have our ring ceremony at the first home series against the Cards after we win it all…

it makes sense too from the opening day hangover aspect
opening day in STL is huge no matter who the opponent is, the next day with an early 12:00 start is a way to sell out the Saturday game as well which most likely would have had many empty seats.

Are we contending this year?

No.
But Fox knows the Cubs draw an audience. Big market.

Al, OT but I'm missing my fanposts and can only see the recommended ones...
…is this a known issue or should I email SBN? If so can you shoot me that email address for tech?

The fanpost widget was removed yesterday
… temporarily, while they investigate the cause of the site outage.
It’s supposed to return sometime Thursday afternoon.
Al Yellon - February 9, 2012
ok thanks.
I can still get to fanposts by clicking “more fanposts” but I see that the widget is gone on all the SBN sites. Surprised SBN wouldn’t put a note or something on the top of pages, etc.
Fukudometer - February 9, 2012
They've been kind of busy investigating the cause of the outage.
Perhaps next time they can do this.
